Fun Fact! Koudelka was going to feature Resident Evil-type combat with on-screen monsters, but at the 11:59th hour the dev team rebelled against the producer, hence why the battle system is so bleh and the castle is so empty. Awesome game still. I'd love to see someone hack the Shadow Hearts ring-system into the game, though.
I liked the battle system in koudelka. Also, there are not enough turn based horror RPGs. It is is a while since I played it, maybe you are right the combat system is undercooked. I wish the shadow hearts games would be more like koudelka. They are so goofy that overshadows the horror elements for me.
4:08 i have been searching for this game since 2002, when my brother got his ps1 this game come in a demo with others game, i never had find in any “all ps1 games” here on youtube, you ended my search casually, thanks bro
Sheep dog and wolf looked AMAZING! I have never seen anything about that gem of a game before. The art design, graphics style & character animations is everything i love in video games. Man i wish we still got video games like that
Azure Dreams. I couldn't tell if it was a roguelike, monster catching, town building, dating sim, or a town building, dating sim, monster catching roguelike. But I liked it, and thought it was underappreciated (still do).
Back then we just called it a Dungeon crawler. I know the actual game, rouge, is ancient but it feels like the term rougelike just poped up at around 2010
Destrega has actually been on my list for like a decade, but I have never managed to find a copy. I fell in love with it way back, since I played a demo disc it was on, along other games that some of I have managed to get my hands on, such as T'ai Fu: Wrath of the Tiger.
David Lynch is huge in Japan. The cast of Twin Peaks even did commercials for Japanese canned coffee and you can see the influence in things like Shin Megami Tensei (evil old lady and young kid), Persona (Velvet Room is the red room with a bonus that it's also made of blue velvet), and the old anime movie Perfect Blue had a heavy Blue Velvet feeling imo. There was also some vampire anime that felt like it, and so did Higurashi to an extent. Even Dune was popular. I liked the Lynch Dune. My only beef with the new movies was the lack of narrating their internal dialogue.
I am so happy to see Incredible Crisis finally get some deserved recognition. It was the most bombastic, weirdest game I ever played, but I loved it's oddness...even if I could never get past the ferris wheel scene. And why did we never get a Destrega sequel is beyond me.
Every video of yours is a true gaming documentary, you guys always make an outstanding job! Kudos for featuring Destrega, the game was nuts and even the soundtrack alone was a banger. I remember of Spider, the cover was featured on a lot of promotional PlayStation flyer by Sony but nobody gave a s*** about it back in the day. Hellnight was... yeah, something like cursed. But it was so damn fascinating (at least for me).
It’s absolutely wild watching this video, because just the other week I watched Bride of Reanimator and SAT UP seeing the name ‘Screaming Made George’ pop up in the credits for monster sfx. I literally said aloud to my roommate, “OF COURSE someone with that name worked on this movie! GOD, the 80s ruled.” I was clueless to this man’s legacy until today…thank you.

Warpaaaaaaaaath! man I started playing that to record footage for our best PS1 games list and I dunno why but it got me HOOKED haha thanks for the awesome suggestions! - Jimmy
You can’t talk about Screaming Mad George and not mention Freaked(1993). It’s on TH-cam and you owe it yourself to watch it. It just may be the best movie ever made.
I love Spider! I bought this game when it first came out and it's still in my collection. I didn't find it too difficult, as I beat it fairly easily. There were always new mechanics to master. It's also in my short list of games I've actually beaten. Great game!
Sentient (1997) firmly belongs on this list. Similar gameplay concept to Mizzurna Falls (investigative mystery featuring NPCs with their own schedules and multiple time-looping story event paths/endings) set on a space station and using the most awkwardly ambitious dialogue system for conversing with NPCs. The story itself is also an incredibly strange and confusing mishmash of psychological SF/cyberpunk ideas.
Wow! I have a few things to say: Great video of course! Screaming Mad George should've have worked on some of the Silent Hill's. His style is great for that. Wolf Sheep N Dog is a game I had never heard of, but it's possibly one of the best PS1 games I've ever seen. It's absolutely crisp, colorful, and beautiful. It looked like a PS2 game! I remember Blast Chamber! I rented it from Block Buster and my cousin and I used to have a TON of fun with that game. I tried buying it but it was impossible to find at the time. A friend of mine used to live in Chinatown in NYC. He had access to some foreign games and we got to play Destrega and LOVED that game. The rest of our friends thought we were making it up. If that game had a good following, I feel it would have went places but Power Stones took that thunder. I remember seeing something about Hell Night in Gamepro magazine (or one of those gaming magazines at the time) and wanted to play it so bad. I feel it would still be very scary with the weird PS1 type of graphics and ambiance! Again, great video!
I had a feeling Spider would be on this list. As someone who grew up in the sidescroller era with a taste for absolute weirdness, I found that one to be a lot of nostalgic fun. Gotta love the blatant ripoff of “Miserlou” in the soundtrack. I’m really wondering how I hadn’t heard of Paranoiascape before! Seems kind of like a 3D Crush Pinball game with mobile flippers. I love a lot of movies that this Screaming Mad George guy has worked on, but now realize that he has dug an elaborate psycho punk rabbit hole that I have no choice but to completely dive into.
Great video as always 🖤 If you do another one of these anytime soon, please consider Racing Lagoon. Another Japan only game released in 1999 developed by Squaresoft as a CaRPG. It has its flaws(a lot i feel are at least alleviated with emulation), but it has such a charm and vibe to it and the story while starting off fairly simple becomes so convoluted and insane the further you get 😂. The soundtrack is also amazing, an easy S tier in my book sitting along side the greats of that era from Square.
A missed mention in the koudelka part is that the voice acting is easily some of, if not the best on the entire system. The actors really gave it their all and it was clear the directors wanted them to be theatrical about it
I wish the shadowhearts games were more like koudelka. The goofy, silly tone of the games really clashes with the horror elements for me. Koudelka has a more consistent mood. Cool video!
Played Sheep Raider and Blast Chamber... both were genuinely good times. Surprised Skullmonkeys didn't make the list though - a claymation side-scrolling sequel to The Neverhood, where one of the weapons you have access to is called the Universe Enema. 🤯
Muppet Race Mania probably isn't quite weird enough. I mean, it may seem like a cash grab with all the "cart" racers that came out back then, but being a Muppets game, it so happens to be both weird and fun. There are a ton of Muppets to unlock and a few game modes.
The unholy war and future cop LAPD are my "not everyone knows them* PS1 games. Oh and battle arena toshinden 3 but that one isn't really hidden or unknown
LSD: Dream Emulator, this one is so odd and surreal it left me uneasy when I was a kid. Every now and then it pops un my head. Even though it's not actually a game, more like a contemporary art, but still.
My favorite weird game that is no joke really fun is Dynamite Cop! It's like of Japanese game designers wrote a sequel to Die Hard with a different character. Very lost in translation, and very enjoyable!
Mizzurna Falls definitely reminds me of a proto-Shemue on a older generation console. Also the Looney Tunes game has VERY good graphics for a PS1; I am impressed.

I was sure you were making these up and these were PC games with the PS1 look - UNTIL I saw Sheep Dog 'n' Wolf, bizarre game I owned with even more bizarre cover art.
@@pharmcat8484 I collect old teddy bears and write about video games for money. I *can* get weirder, but I don't know. The last time that happened, the cops came, and ah I've said too much.
I played Koudelka back in the day, and I don't get why so many TH-camrs cream their jeans over this game. To each their own, sure, but I found it slow, boring, and I wish I still had a copy, so I could give it another try to see if I feel differently now. I think I traded it for Tetris Plus. Guess which one goes for a few hundred dollars now and which one goes for the price of a cup of vending machine coffee in an ER waiting room? Of course, I do still play Tetris Plus, so despite missing the chance to cash in on Ebay, maybe I made a good trade after all.

I enjoy your videos but I wish you'd show all the retro games at their original resolutions. High resolutions just show off all the low poly flaws. Why do you show some at higher resolutions than others?

@@CulturedVultures my only freaky weird game. Is Wild 9. The dudes who made Earthworm Jim. Using just the sounds its a weird ass game.
I actually own blast chamber. LOUDEST game i own
@AlmostCoolGuys I just recorded something on Wild 9! Long live WEX MAJOR
Did you removed one video ??? With coyote on the thumbnail???
Planet Laika, definitely !
Sheep, Dog, and Wolf actually looks legitimately eye popping like a cartoon!
If he called wiley coyote, wolf one more time i was gonna fly to london and kick his ass.....
Each video must be like 5 hours research, 3 hours writing, 2 hours editing. Genuinely impressive with your output
Editing always takes longer than you think it will too
@ even more impressive then. And yes, I always underestimate the editing process
You forgot the 3-5 hours of procrastination in between all that as the writer stares lifelessly into the void, hoping words will magically appear.
There are probably multiple people making each video.
