My favorite hidden gem for PS1 was called 'blazing dragons'. It's a simple game, made for a younger audience, but you can't go wrong with Cheech Marin and John Cleese as voices in the same game. I was in my 20s when I found it, and played the heck out of it because it was just absolutely hilarious, I didn't care if it was made for someone half my age, the comedy was just spot on
Fun fact about Ghost in the Shell on PS1. I had a demo disk that came with Spyro the Dragon. Winter Releases '98 I believe it was called. When I booted it up I was met with this psykodelic kalleidoscope main menu that confused me so much I had no idea it WAS a menu, so instead of using the direction keys to cycle between games I would immediately hit X in order to "move on" as I believed this was but a mere pause screen that I needed to get past. This meant that every single time I booted up this disk I would inadvertedly boot up Ghost in the Shell as it was the first game highlighted on the menu, which led me to believe that the entire "Winter Releases '98" disk was only a demo for that one game. It wasn't until 20 years later, popping it in just for fun, that I stopped up and realized there were more demos on it.
The Syphon Filter 1-2 was a banger... i remember tasing to a crisp bad guys doing the weapon cheat code (Pause during play, then highlight the "weapons" option, then hold SELECT+L1+L2+R2+Circle+X)
Vigilant 8 and vigilant 8 the 2nd offense were a perfect vehicle combat games. Everyone talks about twisted metal but nobody ever mentions vigilant 8, although V8 had a superior physics, graphics, weapons, vehicles, special weapons, stages design and missions in story mode, and not to forget the vehicles upgrades in the 2nd installment.
My favorite Psygnosis game is the obscure, ahead of its time and experimental, "Sentient" (PS1). Other favorite PS1 obscurities include: "Juggernaut," "Kowloon's Gate," "Baroque," "Sentinel," and Art Dink's "Tail of the Sun," and "No One Can Stop Mr. Domino."
The best part about that era is that developers and publishers had no idea of what they were doing so some weird projects seemed to get a good enough budget to shape itself into an interesting game. So many weird games on the PS1.
I made it, Mr. Connery. In my experience growing up I really got into a PS1 game called Rogue Trip which was a twisted metal clone. Honestly I thought it was better than twisted metal and put so much time into the campaign with a friend. Taking out the last boss was a challenge and we were thrilled when we finally beat Big Daddy.
gosh i TRIED to love this game. I played it not "back then" but 4 years ago for the first time and... i really couldn't care less for most of the Characters. The "plot twist" of one character dying is already clear as soon as another character with basically the same cloth colour and weapon steps into the game It looked nice though
@@Zanji1234it's a nostalgia game for sure. Basing it on today's standards, it's generic and predictable. Very few people will ever enjoy older games they didn't have some nostalgia for growing up. Playing it when it first came out though, it was a lot of fun and unique to have an active combat element in a turn based jrpg.
@@xelthos2051 i didn't compared it to "todays standard" i mean i played other RPGs von the PSX for the first time there too. And compared to for example Legend of Legaia the story was ... kinda rushed??
I have some games that i want to mention: -Destrega. -Future Cop. -Bishi Basi. -Jade Cocoon. -Legend of Mana (at least SquareEnix made a remaster some years ago) -Lunar: Silver Star Story (Is a remake but it was on the PS1).
A hidden gem that I always thought was fun and underrated was Fox Hunt. ;) I would also like to recommend Psychic Detective, but it's difficult and requires a perfect or numerous play throughs to really understand.
Love Ninja: Shadow of Darkness! I grew up with that game and I'm honestly surprised it's not mode widely known given the developers. As for hidden gems, I think far too many people neglect the amazing Japan-exclusive PS1 library. My go-to recommendations are the fighting game _Shaman King: Spirit Of Shamans_ and the beat-em-up _Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger_ (both from Bandai I believe). Both are licensed games from the very tail end of the console's lifespan, and as such are quite good-looking titles. There's great recommendations on other genres, but the language barrier makes them hard to recommend to everyone.
I made it, Mr Connery.. Yeeesssshh. Wow though, what a blast from the past! Games like Overboard, Tenka, Time Commando and Treasures Of The Deep! I completely forgot about them. I know it was a new frontier for 3D gaming and the pioneering of what would become, but I wish we had games of such variety these days. Studios that took risks still.
Return Fire was an absolute blast to play against friends with, the classical music and the rock paper scissors vehicle combat were a perfect pairing. While on the subject of competitive gaming the PSX link cable was one of the earliest forms of LAN console gaming and a list of the games that used it best would be rad. DOOM and Command and Conquer Red Alert : Retaliation would have to be included IMO "A-BOMB LAUNCH DETECTED"
Can't agree more about Return Fire, actually came here just to remind Cultured Vultures about it! That's the most fun I've had in 2-player mode along with Twisted Metal. Even the single player mode deserves plaudits, as you alter your strategy depending on the route you choose and the variety of inspired maps keeps you going for hours. It came out first on 3DO but we were lucky to get a port. Quite possibly the best "capture the flag" game I've ever played.
I made it Mr Connery and I have a recommendation. Everyone know about Crash CTR, but my second game in the genre on the PS1 library is Toy Story racer. The handling of the toy cars, the characters, the interactions and the varied campaign with many different modes that are not only races makes the game really fun. I always enjoyed this game.
Thanks for making me feel old again with your anime entry point reference. My entry points were Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) and Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman).
As first thing, cool video as always. There's an urban legend that circulated in some parts here in Italy about Overboard: the game was so unusual to find in stores that most of us believed (so many kids spread the lie) that it was just a demo version of an unreleased game. Then, it appared as a full game but in the pirate market only (funny thing for a game focused on pirates), something that led many of us to believe even more about the theory of an unreleased game like "Thrill Kill". The game became more common in stores during the late 1999. I can recommend you four additional hidden gems too! Rapid Racer - A phenomenal arcade racer featuring powerboats with stunning water effects known as VR Sports Powerboat Racing in the US. Ray Tracers - Made by Taito, it was a very short but enjoyable 3-D follow-up to Chase HQ. Zero Divide 2 - A Virtua Fighter-like fighting game between robots with very fast gameplay, cool graphics and smooth animations. Cardinal Syn - A nice fantasy-themed fighting game with creepy characters, an orchestral soundtrack of amazing proportions and a lot of blood during combats. All of these games had something in common back in the day: they got very poor reviews, but only because they were forced to compete against the usual standards of that era like Tekken 3 or Ridge Racer. Some reviewers back in the day simply had no real idea about how to develop a real review...
Time commando was a great game when released. I bought it for PC. The music is some of the best game music I have heard and it help to create a good atmosphere and immersion.
I really think you would get a kick out of covering Blazing Dragons & Hurk’s Adventure on pS1 both have very “Monty Python” like writing and comedy quips!
Vandal Hearts reminds me of a game I used to play called "Vanguard Bandits". Small town gaming meant many titles were rented b4 I got there but VB was always available and I always had fun with it.
Great video as always!✨Regarding the voice actors for the Ghost in The Shell PSX game, the Major Motoko Kusanagi was voiced by Mimi Woods who later retired in 2009. Her last voice over work was the news anchor in The Bouncer for the PS2.
I worked at Shaba Games for a little bit!(on the Shrek PS2 games) Closed down now, but it was in San Francisco and it was awesome. Really cool team. Good times
Jade Cocoon was a Fun & Simple, yet pretty cool AA Level RPG, that took a few cues from games like Pokémon! The anime cut scenes in the voice acting on top was something you didn't get a lot of in RPG games for the PlayStation at the time and so it was a welcome addition!
I always remember Psygnosis for making the original 1v1 games on the 90s nickelodeon gameshow Nick Arcade. They always flashed that big owl logo in the credits at the end of each episode.
Nitrous Oxide is #1 hidden gem. It's basically tempest but MAN that game is sardine. Loads of trippy effects. Amazing graphics. Blistering speed. Tons of codes to make the hand even weirder. Just absolutely amazing.
I remember seeing a still of Ninja: Shadow of Darkness in an ad pamphlet for the Saturn as a kid. Just a still image of the ninja in a misty mountain (a part I guess was cut) and then tried to find the game for forever thinking it had just been cancelled for the Saturn (which it obviously was) not realizing it was released on the PS1. I'll try it soon.
I don't know if it holds up or not, but I remember loving Tiny Tank. I don't see it mentioned much, if ever. I remember it being SUPER difficult, although that could have been my child brain and skills at the time, and I had to borrow a friend's Game Shark to finally beat it, but I do have fond and frustrating memories of it.
Overboard was such an amazing game. It started my obsession with water graphics. I loved seeing all the sunken ships. I only had the demo for ghost in the Shell, which I loved. I think it came on the same demo as Treasures of the Deep which was an amazing game and a hidden gem. I'm glad Ninja: Shadow of Darkness got mentioned, I love that game. Life Force Tenka came on the first demo disc that came with the Playstation I think. Think it had games like Cardinal Sin and Battle Arena Toshiden on. Some other hidden gems worth mentioning are Hard Edge, Chase the Express, In Cold Blood, V2000, Exhumed, Tunnel B1. I could probably carry listing games that I loved & consider hidden gems all night. But I made it Mr Connery
Nanotek Warrior is my pick for a hidden gem. It takes shooter dna from Tempest and Gyruss and mixes it with a futuristic racing vibe like Wipeout or F-Zero.
Time Commando was the first CD based game I ever played as it came free with the optical drive my dad bought for our 486. Obviously it was the PC version but I was obsessed with it.
The gits game was amazing. If we had trophies back then, this would be a plat for me because I needed to collect all the anime clips from training missions.
I made it Mr Connery. Seriously gotta check out that Shipsmashers game. It looks like a perfect PS1 ass PS1 game. That "Grind" pun into next game was Quality! Yo!!! Thanks for the shoutout TOTD has awesome giant sea creatures too! TENKA looks like another pick up wishlist item
I made it, Mr Connery. I loved the blasts from the past, one hidden gem and a hot take for me is Alundra 2. If Alundra 2 was not titled Alundra and given it's own name, I believe people wouldn't have hated it. It got flack due to being nothing like the first title, just in name only.
I always make it to the end, Mr. Connery. I got the ninja game as a birthday gift (and the person demanded me to give another game back when it was his birthday too 🙃) and it was sooooo good. Gonna download it and play it to see if nostalgia hits the same 🎉
Intelligent Qube! An incredible puzzle game that is highly addictive, simple to understand, and has an underrated OST. While not as simple as Tetris, to me it’s simple enough yet fun enough to even hold non puzzle game fans attention.
I didn't make it Mr Connery. But I have a good excuse, we were without power for a day. Might I mention Descent, I know it's fairly dated by today's standards but still alot of fun. That soundtrack too, love it
Ghost is the Shell was a real hiddne gem. Got I got it years ago before the price when to the moon. These are all good choices! Great list and I had them all :)
As a Sony hater since the beginning, and a true Nintendo Chad, I speak from a position of authority when I say the ultimate PS1 gem that goes underappreciated by Sony fans the most is a game called Omega Boost.
I made it, Mr Connery! Also, have you ever covered the Macross VFX-2 game? it's japanese heavy, but I played it through without really minding the story when I was a kid and loved the mechanics! not much of a hidden gem over there in Japan, I bet, but I never see it featured on these videos.

I made it, Mr. Connery. I also think Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo is an underappreciated game on PS1. I down loaded Capcom's Arcade Classic 2 on my Switch just to get the game because there are no other ports. With CAC2 you get the arcade version but none of the extras that were available on PS1.
Ever play Space Griffon? it's a bit rough around the edges and hasn't aged terribly well, mostly cause it's control scheme feels like it was designed by an alien or a crazy person, but I quite liked it.
I personally really enjoyed apocalypse with bruce willis. I was panned, and earned most of it but i loved that game, it had so much personality and was a blast

I think Disruptor , krazy Ivan ,Pandemonium ,Burning Road and Speed Freaks are hidden gems 🤘🏻
Silent bomber was and still is awesome
Return Fire
PS1 has so many unique games with ideas and mechanics that were never tried again.
For me, the mid 90s-early 00s was the GOAT of gaming ❤❤❤❤
The big companies we grew up with just make games to make money now days. No experimentation anymore.

I loved vigilante 8 but honeslty the inly reason i got it was it was on sale and i coukdnt sffird twisted metal

The first level having ska music is awesome!
Dude yes that’s exactly what Ive been saying I love rogue trip and it deserves way more praise then it gets
Amazing game, same as Vigilante 8.
@shannonbayley3684 the disco theme of V8 was pretty cool
I feel like The Legend of Dragoon is rarely mentioned, but those who know it love it.
Still waiting for a prequel!
We have covered it a few times, big fans! Thanks for becoming a member :D

Very fond, but frustrating memories of Tiny Tank. Hahaha
I made it, Mr Connery
I like these kind of videos as I'm currently revisiting PS1 for the games I missed as a child
I made it, Mr Connery
I used to love playing Return Fire on PlayStation. I think it still holds up.
I recommend Rising Zan for the PS1. It's basically Devil May Cry before Devil May Cry.
The Samurai Gunman, loved that game
I remember Overboard!!! I'm FAIRLY sure it was on a demo disc way back in the day!
it was. I played that demo disc to death. It came on the first demo disc with Lifeforce Tenka & Kurushi, Hercules & Abes Oddysee I think

No PS1 hidden gems video would be complete without mentioning Nightmare Creatures.
Amazing game! My dad played it a lot when I was growing up!
Can we really say Nightmare Creatures is hidden at this point?
Cool game though.
Yup. Bloodborne before Bloodborne
Treasures of the Deep was a great game
I had overboard on a demo disc. Played it quite a lot for a demo. I remember wanting it but never got it. It was actually pretty satisfying gameplay.
Return Fire was an absolute blast to play against friends with, the classical music and the rock paper scissors vehicle combat were a perfect pairing.

Honestly, I never even played a PS1, but I'm planning on rectifying that, and these videos are helping me build my to-play list.
Cool list Sean Connery 😂 Ah man you missed an FZero reference with Wipeout being FZero but on Water! 😂😁💪💪
Vandal hearts never got my attention back in the day, I'm gonna go back now and replay it 20 something years later
Fear effect series is another hidden gem.
Loved Dave mirra game also as i was a bike kid at that time. Courier crisis was the start to all that bike stuff. So many hours sunk in them.

Man I recently got into Crusader for the PS1 (since I can’t get the DOS version working) and boy is it fun!
I had a demo with overboard and lifeforce tenka... Very much liked both
Marsh, the guy who does deep dives into the Shin Megami Tensei series, also did a deep dive into Hellnight which is worth watching.
I always make it to the end, Mr. Connery.

Might I mention Descent, I know it's fairly dated by today's standards but still alot of fun. That soundtrack too, love it

I made it. Mr connery
"I made it, Mr Connery"... also, can attest that the GitS PS1 game is awesome!
rogue trip vacation 2012 is a game that many people don't know about. its fantastic. i really enjoyed playing it.
LMAO eh hate and love PlayStation. Sony finally won me over with 3 games. Resident evil 2, metal gear solid and Tenchu.🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣
Love this

Crisis Beat is a hella fun beat’ em up 🤜🤕
I loved the bouncer when it came out 🤣🫣
I made it, Mr Connery! Also, have you ever covered the Macross VFX-2 game? it's japanese heavy, but I played it through without really minding the story when I was a kid and loved the mechanics! not much of a hidden gem over there in Japan, I bet, but I never see it featured on these videos.

@@CulturedVultures thank you! I'll do it ASAP
I love Codename Tenka! Great PS1 shooter
You do this again you gotta add Juggernaut. It’s cryptic and long and it feels like it’s three or four different stories mashed into one.
I made it, Mr Connery, my favorite ps1 game will always be Brave Fencer Musashi, I wish they'd do something with the franchise
I Made it, Mr Connery.
Not sure if this games were already mentioned but Gungage,Skullmonkeys and Incredible Crisis are games that deserve more attention.

I made it Mr. Connery! Yay i like your videos :) good lists
Can't forget jet moto either. 1 and 2 were great
Bugs in time or time busters was the best collectathon genre for the ps1
Ever play Space Griffon? it's a bit rough around the edges and hasn't aged terribly well, mostly cause it's control scheme feels like it was designed by an alien or a crazy person, but I quite liked it.
I personally really enjoyed apocalypse with bruce willis. I was panned, and earned most of it but i loved that game, it had so much personality and was a blast
I absolutely love the Vandel hearts game on Xbox 360. I will have to try out the PS1 game sometime.
I made it, Mr Connery!
There was some scooter game i remember also. Like extreme scooters
Ninja shadow of darkness was the closest ps1 got to Last Ninja loved it
I made it Mr. Connery. Great list!
Tenka was awesome, one my first psx games
If we made a video ranking hidden gem TH-cam channels, yours would be top 1 pal
😌
Where I lived nobody was playing Tony Hawk once Grind Session came out. 😄😄
YO I like the Bouncer! haha
I made it, Mr Connery!
Great games in this video :)
Too late for the steam keys, though I have enjoyed this video without expecting any incentive for it! Please continue! :D
