When I was a young jazz bassist my director, during big band rehearsal, threatened to attach a metronome to a car battery and to my testicles to teach me how the bassist sets the tempo in a jazz band. It would have been a lot easier if this video had been on TH-cam back then. Just a masterclass in pushing the tempo. You can tell how hard the bass is driving the tempo by how how easily the drummer is just floating along.
So fun to see Patrick playing with Larry as a lifelong Brad Mehldau Trio lover. Love that Larry is sitting in with folks from the up and coming generation.
patrick bartley consistently gets to that zone where you just want him to scream louder and louder, like i just want it to get even heavier. its so good. cuong vu gets a nice screaming sound on his trumpet, that type of sound. a musical exorcism
Ready to go down in history as one of the greatest jams of all time. My mouth was hanging open like an idiot in pure shock/joy for the entirety of this.
There are also a few videos on Pat's YT channel of Emmet, Kyle Yasushi and Pat at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival which are absolutely gobsmackingly on fire performances
Emmet, you need a fire extinguisher near your piano! I am losing a ton of sleep listening to your videos late evenings. The drummer Kyle has the tastiest drums I've heard in quite some time. Except for me, my large family isn't very interested in jazz; however, I've sent family texts with links to your videos and many are seriously impressed and want me to buy a pro horn so I can sound more like Bartley.....yeah right! I play a $200 Chinese horn
@@ivandrago11074 Well either they're quarter notes and the tempo is very fast (roughly 280?). Or the tempo is slower (I have it near 160) and they are eighth notes. I am not studied in notation/composition of this kind of music so I cannot weigh in, but someone experienced can. I'm not sure what would be more likely.
@@evilsheepgod1920 yeah I think so, so 4 bars of Larry’s crotchets on C minor and so on ( although I think with guys at this level they make substitutions and changes that are way beyond me haha)
My RIP Brother from another Mother Rudy Binder would sit with me and we would just Keep Exclaiming They're Smokin !!!! IF he was here 2 C THIS Absolute Perfection !!!
Same here. Those of us who’ve been jazz listeners for a while have no problem feeling that break-neck pulse going under that drum solo. It’s what I call “melodic” drumming.
I highly recommend that you explore his J-Music Ensemble material if you haven't already. From the very first time I heard Pat play nearly 5 years ago, I was absolutely captivated by the way he infuses each note with soul. You can imagine my delight when he collaborated with my favourite local jazz heroes The Consouls and then I find EC3 through Pat. Such joyful listening!

jazz didn't make sense to me until I learned how to listen to the drums and bass
@@lankythedankysamee
Lucky your band director only threatened you with that…… 😂
Dude what the hell 😂
The drummer “floating along” is the perfect description
Larry’s stamina is unparalleled!
this..this is what I'm saying! jeez
with the strength you can feel in every note!
Not walking, running a marathon!

I'm just proud to say I've jammed with Emmet before; when with world class musicians like him and these guys you up your own game!
This is literally the best alto playing I've ever heard in my entire life!
His flow is insane
You clearly have not heard kenny garret or immanuel wilkins
@@chuckvedrene703 Ive met them have you?!🤣🤣🤣 Patrick sounds great!!
Paul Chambers would’ve loved this!
I love this drummer... so much music, no ego, just beauty
‘Mr E.C.’ (et al) going hard! A glorious 18 minutes ❤
forever grateful that I can watch and listen to performances like this - Jazz in the modern era is looking like a great return
What an incredible performance... just wow!! When was the last time you have heard a performance so intense?? A group of absolute musical champions
Emmet, the double-camera view is so great! Thanks for this special energy, delivered fresh into the living room...
Bartley giving me some Kenny Garrett vibes on his solo in all the right ways.

Patrick was in another dimension in the second half of his solo 🌠🔥
👏👏 This is just so INCREDIBLE. All 4 are: Total MONSTERS. 🎹🎼🎷🥁
Woww........Patrick again raising the bar. Just another one of his solos that will break the Internet Sax world.
Emmet went straight from crooner jazz to the swaggy 90s of kenny kirkland!
kenny kirkland is such a boss
Next thing you know, Emmet will be playing like McCoy Tyner, and all will be well with the world.
When aliens make first contact instead of the politicians or military being there I would have these guys greeting them with Mr. PC.....
Larry on fire
How does anyone play 8ths on the bass at that tempo for that long? IN TIME!
8th notes?

I think it’s standard to say a walking bassline is crotchets/quarter notes, this is just a v quick tune
@@Chrishowes5 are they doing changes at that speed too?

What an absolutely incredible performance. You guys are special! Man, I can't sit still after that!!
Strickly awesome...to compare this unit to any other would undermind the true essence if this level of artistry
Are you listening, Mr. Coltrane? Being in heaven just got so much better for you.
Damn Emmet!!!! Almost psychic connection with the drummer!!! Completely SICK combination of players this time! I’m smiling so big my cheeks hurt.😊
