Patrick is such a student of saxophone TRADITION... he is a living testament to all of the masters that preceded him. The old school syrup, sliding, heavy vibrato greatness of the early saxophone masters is so prevalent. And he SWINGS like mad. I've watched this solo dozens and dozens of times and it still makes me smile and shout. Such a great solo and group.

Yes Bartley is one of those rare jazz revivalists, dedicated to the craft of acoustic small group jazz. It’s mastery of a musical language, in the same or similar way that Bach mastered 18th century tonality.
And it’s not just in his technique, it’s in his intention, and belief in the power of that language. His cadence, his flow, he searches for the essence of jazz.

12:57 it's crazy how much I appreciated Joe's drum solo even more AFTER it ended, the relentless buzz snare conditions the listener to this tension of no solid single hits for a long time, almost like hearing a snare solo underwater, and then when it's released and the whole band comes back in, everything just sounds so bright and open in comparison, it feels euphoric. Excellent work.

Can I recommend another lesser known sax solo? Its a ballade piece by stan kenton and the alto sax solo in it so well constructed that I'd say it rivals this, perhaps even better, if you'd like to know which its called

Man I've played that trumpet line at 4:50 over and over and over and over again, it is so damn tasty. Patrick Bartley's reaction is on point! Notice how Emmet Cohen stopped playing a few seconds into the phrase to leave all the space for it to unfold, then came back when it ended. That's interplay right there. Man... These guys are so damn good

He sure did - I just love this band. Patrick is the best Alto player alive for me currently and as a fellow Trumpet Player Bruce is just amazing too. If there’s one good thing to come out of lockdown it’s this - Emmet (I hope) has gained worldwide exposure as one of the greatest pianists of his generation and Bruce and Patrick have certainly elevated themselves into this Status too. Absolutely world class and I just hope that one day I will be able to see some or all of these fantastic musicians live.

After Patrick's "tour de force", I thought, how the hell do you follow that? But then Bruce did, superbly.
Patrick totally ripped, but do y’all know how hard it is to do such a consistent buzz roll for that long while actually shaping and phrasing it? Plus the whole thing was a masterclass in how modern players approach classic style music.
Not a drummer but I can appreciate it. The feel is so different from Kyle’s playing but fit’s perfectly and elevates the whole band. Superb.

If you go back just one second to 2:59, you can hear the drummer actually plays it first at the end of the phrase, then sax/piano catch it after :)

Well said. As a trumpet player myself Bruce has become my favourite payer during lockdown. However I do have to say Patrick’s solo is a classic and will rightly be lauded for many years to come - it has everything - passion, feel, fantastic interaction with the band and above all an unbelievable sense of building and building throughout it - the mark (for me) of a world class soloist.. What a band!
I like Bruces a lot too. Patrick’s went really hard and Bruce countered that with a little slower to generally more mellow at the beginning.
Both are great but Bruce’s has my pref!

Same! That's an insanely amazing way to climax a solo. The rest of the band help by really making that rise as strong as possible and responding to the whole thing perfectly. One of the best jazz videos I've seen in a very very long time.

Already knowing and loving his amazing playing with you and his own J-Music Ensemble, Pat's performance here just bumps up my respect for his musical ability and knowledge even more. The fact he stayed in character for so long, emulating the masters of the '30s and '40s while adding his own flavor to it is just inspiring. Not to mention the entire group was absolutely locked in and cookin'! Emmet and his group always seem to bring the heat!

I was a band director at a school near where Patrick went to high school (Dillard). I remember being a judge for the all county jazz band when he was like a freshman. Needless to say he got a perfect score from me. He also plays amazing clarinet too, not sure if he still plays. I knew he would be great back then but dang he's something else.

Jazz is all about having a good time! It’s about positivity, creativity, expression, emotion, trust, and healing. You can’t have much more fun than they’re having. Just look at their faces! I guarantee you can’t find a sad face in a jam session like this! Everyone’s engaged and supportive when others are soloing. Everyone’s got everyone’s back. It’s quite literally an adventure in the full sense of the term. You know where you’ll end, but it’s up to you how you get there! What a riot!

I think the drummer kind of 'voiceled' them by playing basically the same notes just one moment before they hit those notes. Though I'm not sure whether or not he did that intentionally. Or maybe I'm wrong idk

This might be one of the best jazz recordings ever. So incredibly new founding. It's always good to know that we still can indicate in jazz whilst still playing in an older style.

Patrick Bartley is one of the greats of this generation and I believe will go down as a formative figure of our time. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘speaking through ones horn’ before. I feel hard pressed to think of any other horn player alive that I’ve heard who’s just as fluent him.
For real. He's the one who inspired me to pick up the sax and he's one of my greatest influences. Got a long, long way to go before I'm even a quarter as good as him though.
100%. Also, I find a lot of soprano sax can get rather screechy for my ear when played hard but when Pat plays I don't hear screech, I hear notes infused with rhythm and soul. (I'm thinking of the J-Music cover of 'Price' from Persona 5. ) Whichever sax he plays and whatever style, he just has amazing flow.

Who are these guys????? Dang........this group is LOADED with talent. Tuned in for the trumpet, who did not disappoint, but ....that sax solo, frigging AWESOME! Then the panio strides his way in and uses up the keyboard! Where does it end? It doesn't. Cause the drummer takes us on his trip, building, building, building then flowing back into the group finale! I have loved this song ever since I hear Doc Severinsen scream his solo/big band version.
Fellow Trumpet player here - love Bruce who is my favourite Trumpeter out there currently .... but..... Patrick’s solo is on a different planet with the sic phrasing with the rest of the band, the change to sticks at 2:46 on drums and that Lester Leaps in at the end. OMG.

One of the best feelings when playing in a small group is getting so locked in with each other that you can do things like this without a second thought. It’s a truly fantastic experience
