I *think* this version was performed in Cleveland in 2009. Whatever or wherever, it's F**kin-A-GREAT, another of his many, many songs that were'n't "good enough" for a "regular" album. This is on "Tracks" (1998), which has, I believe, 66 songs that were outtakes from earlier albums that, for whatever reason, didn't make the cut. His throw-aways are better than 99% of the best of the songs written by most other songwriter/performers. A true genius. A human treasure. Seeing him live is even better: The Greatest Show on Earth.
That was my 21st birthday! Coincidentally, I had gotten dumped by this one girl and I found this song a few days after. Around the same time too. My heart still bursts at the seams when I sing along and feel all the emotion. God I love this song.

Then, out of the blue, he opened with a full-band, anthem presentation of this early classic on the Reunion tour, in Philadelphia on September 25, 1999. A deep cut from an album released 26 years earlier, most of the audience only slowly recognizes the song. But by the end 20,000 are singing along. It gives me goose bumps. Ah, turn it up. I don't think Bruce could have written the song, or performed it with such emotion, if it were not true for him a few times. I recommend Mr. Springsteen's autobiography, "Born to Run" (2016). Who could have had a better life. He came from nothing, dirt poor, few friends, and became one of the world's most admired and wealthiest musicians - heck, possibly the most admired celebrity of any kind. My gawd. He became Bruce Springsteen. How do you accomplish more than that? Yet, as his autobiography explains, he has lived through some very dark times, some of which haunt him still.

Bruce fucked up this song forever. I just don't understand how he could have ever thought that the version I have on my Deep Down In the Vaults bootleg is worse.
