This is with out any doubt the best intro that i beg for at gigs when he plays this masterpieces greatest song on you tube by a million miles The boss at his very very best
I was 13 years old and I caught this tour when they came to Madison Square Garden. Over 2 hours of high intensity magic. Everyone there new we were witnessing something special. A bewildered smile on everyone's face. I'll never forget that feeling.
Amen, I saw this version twice in 1978. I will always maintain that was the best tour EVER. And the live ‘78 version of this song is by far my favorite version of any Bruce song. Epic!!!!
Just amazing. Shame that he mostly stopped long soloing once it came to the 1980's. I would have loved him to make more music like this where he shows how just what a great axeman he is.
I haven’t seen many Bruce shows-two to be exact, 2008 and just recently in Chicago-but I respectfully disagree with the opinion that started this thread. In fact, his guitar prowess was an unexpected surprise at the two shows I’d witnessed. Excellent guitar player, both in the past and now!
I was in the Army stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was September of 1978 and I had just left Seattle bound for Germany. My flight had a stop in Denver and then on to Newark to spend a few weeks at my Uncle Tom and Aunt Dot’s home, before going to Germany. The flight from Seattle to Denver was unremarkable. When people started boarding the plane in Denver two guys asked me to move so they could sit together. I took the other guys seat a few rows back. So, I’m sitting next to this guy and there is a girl sitting next to him, and he’s hitting on her slowly from Denver to Newark. At one point he must’ve asked her where she works, so she says in Washington Township, and he says, so now that I know I’ll have to stop by and see you sometime. I leaned over and said my uncle and aunt live in Washington Township on Webster Avenue. She says that’s just around the block from where I live. She asks him to switch seats so she can talk to me. We talked the rest of the way to Newark. As we were descending, I said I have to get a taxi to Washington Township so you can ride with me. She says my mom is picking me up - you can ride with me. She dropped me off at my uncle and aunt’s home. I said nice meeting you hope to see you again. The next morning, she rang the doorbell and said would you like to come to the park with me and my friends and throw some frisbee. We spent the next two weeks together. The second week her parents left for Vashon Island in Washington State to visit her grandmother. One day she comes over and says, my brother has an extra ticket to a show at the Capital Theater in Passaic, would you like to come with us. I said of course. It was September 19th or, 20th, 1978, and the show was Bruce Springsteen. What a show!! I left for Germany a few days later, on September 23rd.
In maybe 1984-5 I broadcast a Sat night exhibition game from m old Giants Stadium after which I went to the roof to sleep til Sunday night when Bruce played it worked to quote Talking Heads 'Once in a Lifetime '
Rock and roll at its best. Seeing him and ESB in 2023 is just as incredible an experience relative to the timeline. So lucky to see them live in 1978 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. See you again Nov 14, 16, 2023. #onlythestrongsurvive
I was so blessed to have my Mom as my friend. She took me to great concerts. Bruce being the best of course. The last concert of his that I saw was when the album The River was released. RIP Mom. Thanks again.

THERE IS NO BETTER OPENING TO ANY ROCK SONG!!!! just my dumbass opinion!!! Lets see some of these grasshoppers today do this with this much power and feeling.
When they were young and had all that raw energy. It was what made their shows legendary and we as fans to get to enjoy the ride. The E street band and the Boss, if they were not the best they made that night feel they were.
@@sallyhenry6227 Amen to that, but you know Jersey had 3 bands that came from there. Southside Jonny and John Cafferty also who had similar sounds. The Boss though besides his shows had the writing chops like a book of literature.
Phil Petillo was a great Luthier and a real gentleman. I interviewed him for Backstreets magazine and he couldn't have been nicer to a young kid. Oh yeah, killer version of one of my favorite songs!
The most epic version of this song I've seen! Live music does not get any better than this!! I was definitely born 20 years too late!!! Thanks for uploading, you are great! :)
What is interesting today is that he really didn't get much press in the 70's. He had the 1 big single, but when Rolling Stone did an article on him in a fashion of the must see live show a lot were like, who? You have to understand that the 70's were a mix of all types of music from funk, progressive rock, southern rock, hard rock, R and R, R and B, Jazz, and even some bubble gum pop.
