I got so lucky with this, I recently picked up an FZ-1 (minus controller) for 8 dollars at a thrift store. My guess would be that they thought it was a CD player or something, and so it was priced waaaaaaaay under its actual value. I bought a controller for 10 bucks off ebay, and when I turned on the console, it had a copy of V.R. Stalker in the tray! The system works, and so does the game, so all told, I started my 3DO collection for under 20 bucks!
Lol you really lucked up and yes the thrift store definitely thought it was a CD player because that's exactly what it looks like. I've been hoping the thrift stores around me will have a 3DO for a cheap price too.
I have 2 3DO, I have the Panasonic and the goldstar 3DO both with electronic opening draw. I have over 50 original games and both 3DOs work perfectly and I have never had any trouble with them.
The difference between the Panasonic and Goldstar was noticed when you open and close the draws. The goldstar open and closed a lot faster and booted up the game faster. The Panasonic 3DOs draw moves like it was too chilled out. My 3DO I own was the 3DO I brought from Day one. For its time it was a great machine as I moved over from mega CD, and the video scenes were greatly improved, people should not compare it to any modern consoles, because this machine was the best at its time. My favourite games are, twisted Gameshow, Road Rash, Horde, Demolition Man, Myst, Theme park, space hulk, and many more.
I have the first release version FZ1 with the non-glossy top, (I have the glossy version too) and they both do Photo CD. Goldstar's version is actually not one of the better designs that were produced( FZ10 being inferior). The Sanyo version is basically a Goldstar in a speedo. IMO...
I never owned one of the actual consoles, but I did pickup a 3DO Blaster back in the day. It was a more affordable alternative for PC gamers. I was convinced at the time that all future video game consoles would have add-on boards for PC gamers; boy was I wrong ;) Times have changed though, now if you want to pick up a 3DO Blaster because of its rarity, it is more expensive than a used 3DO :P
I loved mine! I should never have gotten rid of it. My buddy grabbed the gold star version so he saved a bunch of money. Too bad you didn't show off "Way of the Warrior" which was a cheesy knockoff of Mortal Kombat but with a killer White Zombie soundtrack. Unfortunately, the minute the playstation came out, these consoles were obsolete.
He failed to mention that in March of 1994, it dropped to $499... a 200 price drop. It was essentially 4 or 5 months after release. I know this because as soon as it dropped, I bought it.
@@drunkensailor112 Actually it was. Granted computers back then were more often bundled machines of 2 to 3K for low end business devices that included a monitor, keyboard and sometimes a printer. Don't forget, 3DO was a Console Platform standard that anyone could build for, not just Panasonic. I have a Goldstar 3DO, which still works. Sanyo also made one in Asia. However, Panasonic made the best quality 3DOs.
Its a cool piece of tech for its era. I got one a few years back via Craigslist..think I paid about 60 bucks for an FZ10 with 1st and 2nd gen controllers, and about 25 games. Need for Speed and Road Rash are fantastic on this system. Also of note is the lack of copy protection ;)
I remember playing the 3DO (Road Rash of course!) when I contributed to Hyper magazine back in the 90's. That thing was simply amazing for the time with crystal clear cut scenes and complete film clips for the songs featured on the game. Something game companies should consider doing today!
ooh was that Dragon Lore I saw!! I loved that game as a kid. Think I played it on the PC though. That`s probably one of the earliest games I can remember that allowed you to choose a good or evil path.
I still own my 3DO and still love games like Killing Time, Need for Speed and Road Rash! Poor old Trip Hawkins. The PC community laughed him out of town for having the notion of an upgradable console with multi-media. Fast-forward to 2014 and the Steam Machine will be released. What a bunch of hypocrites!!!
I still got mine too. It's literally still connected to my main television and has been for the most part since I got it. I keep it around just like an old VCR. Sometimes it's nice to play a blast from the past. I just don't like how I can't play any of the American Laser Games anymore unless I get a cat-tube TV... but I have a large library because... I was stupid back in the day wasting all my part-time money on video games.
... not until later though, when publishers realized it was sinking and PS1/Saturn was the new hotness. Quite a few titles were first for 3DO like Need for Speed, Return Fire, Gex, etc
EXCEPT Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, this was the only system at the time that had it as it was exclusive...............for a time anyway as it later came out on PC.
Mark, you should find the game "Icebreaker" for the 3DO. It was also released on the PC, but was originally released on the 3DO. It was one of my favorite games growing up.
I got one, and it still works! I bought in Miami in 1995, i was at Orland visiting Disney for the first time (I am brazillian) and i wanted a SEGA SATURN, but they didn´t have anyone avaiable at that day, so I bought the 3DO...GREAT CONSOLE, Great GAMES!
There were a few third party 6 button pads available, like the Capcom Pad Soldier. You could also buy arcade sticks for the 3DO in Japan, don't think they were available in the west though. Then there's 3DO to SNES or PS pad adaptors.
If you're having troubles with the Panasonic 3DO, you should try the Goldstar 3DO. I have owned three of them and they all worked! Also try Star Control II for the 3DO, it's A LOT OF FUN.
For me the 3DO is the console a collector's needs to collect and play ports of those old DOS and WINDOWS games, whitout and actual Old retro PC with different operative systems.
I recall watching this review a few years back. Anyway, I think the 3DO was way ahead of its time. It had so much potential, but the industry was just not ready for it. Also the initial price drove buyers away. However, prices did go down tremendously in 1994. It's a shame it was considered a failure though.
Mostly due to the way it was advertised and marketed, they called the Genesis and super Nintendo, 2 of the best consoles of all time, baby toys, and the cost was wayyyy out there for most gamers, so they thought, where keeping our toys, thank you and to be 100% honest I kinda Aggree. Even so there is positives to everything, no side has a pure positive or negative.
After the original playstation, super nintendo this is my favourite console that I've owned. One of the things the revieweres don't mention is the sound... It was amazing, you could have real music with the 3DO. The music in Starfighter was incredible, it was played directly from its cd unit. I remember mine fondly, unfortunately I needed money to move out and sold it for peanuts!
It was only $700 for a few months, then went down by a few hundred dollars by xmas 93, and then even to an attractive price in spring 2004.... The only reason I got one in April 94.... was because it was nearly half the price that it had been..... Most tech is expensive at launch.. then discounted quite quickly.... Then you had the later FZ-10 version which had a truly attractive price.
This system was WAY ahead of its time. Things like build in memory for games saves was on the 3DO and only recently is this on current consoles. The one thing I LOVED about the 3DO and wished current companys would do is the headphone jak in the controller. You could play your games as loud as you wanted to, no matter how late it was, and with the headset plugged in you wouldn't keep anyone up. I must have been really REALLY lucky to find my FIRST, used, and working 3DO at a Goodwill store.
So glad my FZ-1 works. I hope it doesn't break. It wouldn't break my heart, but my JVC X'EYE dying would. I'd have to take that thing to an electronics repair shop in the year 2036. Sadly I see myself doing the same thing with the PS2, PS1 and Xbox 360 in the nearer future due to lack of backwards compatibility from the new consoles. Shoulda stocked consoles when I could. Sega Nomads were $80. I remember buying a Model 2 SNES at Wal-Mart for $60. Brand new Model 2's go for $1000+ these days.
Bought the FZ-1 Panasonic Model in 1998 at a pawn shop for $20 with about 7 game, Wing commander 3 and Super wing commander to name a few.... still love this system to this day
Yeah, I remember wanting to buy one of those, but couldn't because back in the price was way out of my reach, Still today I might be able to find one, if I had a bigger room. Thank you for all the great reviews, and for your constant unbiased opinion.
I had one of these back in 1996 when I was four years old. I didn't have too much fun with it because I couldn't really figure out how to play a lot of the games on it. So my dad returned it and got me an N64, I was never happier to get rid of it.
One biggest problem was the price was to high and the technology was immature back then so some games just show pseudo 3d and not maximize the console hardware
In a time when many TV's were mono it was great that the 3DO had a headphone socket in the controller giving u stereo sound... great design choice. one of few...
Slow processing was the real achilles heel of the hardware, regardless of price. It just couldn't do what it could do smoothly with any workload. I paid like $750 at Macy's for mine. I did enjoy the hell out of the videos, demos and a few of the games, but I don't think I enjoyed $750 worth of it. Probably $130. Road Rash was amazingly addictive. It's a same the system floundered out of the gate, but Playstation was such a night and day difference in terms of function as a 3d system.
We had one of these when i was little, i played the first need for speed on it. For ours we had wireless controllers so no daisy chaining lol in fact i dont ever recall having wired controllers. I just have so many good memories from playing this system.
I bought my 3DO for 30.00 from a local video store on the day they announced that they weren't gonna make any more games for it. I had an awful lot of fun with that thing.
if back then people were awere of the following games: - D - Luciene's Quest - Samurai Shodawn - Gex - Puzzle Bubble - Road Rash - Space Hulk - Wolfenstein 3D - Star Controll 2 - Policenauts I believe the system would have been more sucessfull
Today I've bought a working 3DO for 10€ in Ballarò market in Palermo! Though I found it with no games and it was quite dirty I think this is quite a deal, even though it wasn’t not working! :) do I've been lucky??
sei molto fortunato, la puoi far riparare. io l'ho beccata a 50 euri funzionante con tre giochi , controller e scatola semidistrutta......avrei rpeferito un neo geo cmq...
doohde thanks for these reviews. YOu should know you ARE appreciated. And MANY times over I enjoy your more than your closest 'competition' the angry vid,...yeah you know the rest, I want to avoid giving any comp a involuntary plug here that would NOT be my intention but I had to put you in the ball park to know who I'm speaking of. But yeah I like you more most of the time bc you get straight to the point and tho you are entertaining and not boring you dont' waist are TIME with a lot of fluff
Funny that I only just bought a 3DO a little while ago and this video comes up. I think my favourite feature about the 3DO is that it uses normal video and audio out connectors... and S-video comes standard!
Nice review! I love my 3DO and you are right about the FZ-1 model failing. Stay away from it! Had 2 and both went bad. My FZ-10 has been good so far and it is probably the safest version to buy. No problems with my Goldstar 3DO yet either. My Sanyo T-R-Y 3DO seems a little quirky sometimes.
I played my 3DO for years and never had an issue. The headphone jack in the controller was a great idea. Only downside was the loading time... it was insanely long
I've watched a lot of classic game room videos and generally like your commentary, but I feel like when you review game systems its a let down to not get to see any game footage or commentary on how the graphics/sound hold up compared to similar systems of the era. Like, you said Rebel Assault is "way better" on 3do compared to genesis, that would have been an interesting side by side. Or maybe show a couple games that are only available on 3do to see what we're missing.
i had this first model and bought it right when it came out. it's still running great to this day. paid 700$ I love 'The Horde' on it. one of my all time favorite games
I was lucky enough to get a floor model FZ1 from the GoodGuys for $50 back in 95. Still works to this day. Super Street Fighter is all I really play on it. Hey Mark, you should find a CLD-A100 laseractive and review that. Talk about expensive!!!
They have a working 3DO at the gamer's grotto in Bennington, VT. its only $65.00 and they have some games sold separately. I almost picked it up yesterday with all the games they had. If only I did, I would be a very happy man.
I still have my 3DO. Once I saw Super Wing Commander I had to get it. Totally was worth it back then. Lots of games for it that were never available anywhere else. Still addicted to Twisted and Icebreaker.
I knew this console here in Brazil in 1994, I had 10 years old, I see a 3d shooter game but I don't remember his name... I can't play in this console, but I see many videos about that here in the Classic Game Room. Thanks for that! Classic Game Room, make a video about Star Wars Rebel Assault II, this PC Game is Amazing!!! Thank you!
I got mine from a mom/pop game store for $10. It was sold as is, and didn't load any games. Since I can repair almost anything, I opened it up and fixed the problem. I noticed that just about every FZ-1 that didn't work, had the same problem.
Anybody who says the 3DO is shit has never played it and just dickrides the AVGN believing that whatever he says is the truth.IF you have played the 3DO,you would know that it has some truly impressive games like The Need For Speed,Po'ed,Trip'd,D,Slayer,Shockwave/2,Alone In Teh Dark,Soccer Kid,Space Hulk,Gex,Wing Commander III, the definitive Street Fighter 2 port,Road Rash etc.
The 3DO was the first 32-bit game console and the first disc based game console ever made. It was nowhere as successful as the original PlayStation, but it had far superior hardware technology as the original PlayStation.
The 3DO is an example of a console with potential that flopped due to bad business. It was originally going to be a console that would be licensed out to numerous electronics companies to create their own flavors of the console thus driving the costs down. Unfortunately, Panansonic was the only one who signed up and they advertised it as a high-end home entertainment system. I'm sure you all know what happened afterwards.
I had a friend who got his dad to fork out the 700 for this with Way of The Warrior. Haha. Love these Vids Being a 36 year old gamer myself takes me back.
Awesome vid! It's really too bad you got some non working units. That is actually highly unusual. While the Goldstar units are well known to have poorer construction, the Panasonic model(s) is built like a tank. I've owned several over the years, and they still work perfectly nearly 20 years later. In fact, I'd say 3DO is one of the most reliable consoles ever. I doubt most people would have a hard time finding a great. working unit. They are simply too well built.

what a bargain
I have 2 3DO, I have the Panasonic and the goldstar 3DO both with electronic opening draw. I have over 50 original games and both 3DOs work perfectly and I have never had any trouble with them.
Considering inflation, the 3DO would cost $1095.48 today. Damn.
2022 update: Now it would be $1442.
I remember seeing the 3DO in the 90s and the price was lowered to $399. My parents would have never bought me this thing. :)
Well did you get it?

Very underrated system, can't go wrong with a 3DO.
Very true 😭
Forgot to mention the Goldstar version of this. Way better because you could view Kodak Photo CD on it which the Panasonic version did not do .

Man, Mohammed! You go, man.
doohde thanks for these reviews.
I am so glad to be born in the late 80s I grew up with the sega genesis :)
I also know that "Super Street Fighter II Turbo" is released on this system. :)
Lookin forward to 3DO reviews
@4:19 totally agree!!! He couldn't have said it more true than that!
Nice looking console.
Was talking 'bout Plumbers don't wear ties, E.T. is a great movie. Great avatar btw.
I'm crossing my fingers for some Wing Commander reviews on 3DO, Wing Commander 3 especially!
I have a working FZ-1 model, and it's very nice. I also have an FZ-10, but it has a faulty laser.
I was lucky enough to get a floor model FZ1 from the GoodGuys for $50 back in 95. Still works to this day. Super Street Fighter is all I really play on it. Hey Mark, you should find a CLD-A100 laseractive and review that. Talk about expensive!!!
wow this really makes me want to see some game play!
Thank you!
I was fortunate to find a brand new 3DO FZ-10 :D it came with the Gex game included in the box.
Syndicate on 3DO must have been the best version o_0
Wish someone did a remake of syndicate
The 3do was ahead of its time
I picked up a Goldstar one at goodwill today for $18 & It works like a charm :D
I hope to see you reviewing Space Ace in your next video!
The Jaguar is also pretty decent. The 3DO is much better, but the Jaguar isn't crap like the AVGN says.
I heard that escape from monster manor and the killing zone was also good. Is that true?
yes they are good
That's good. I'm actually looking to add to my collection. Any games that anyone can suggest for me to check out?
besides the ones I listed, idk.look up on google "best 3DO games" and go from there.
The 3DO was the first 32-bit game console and the first disc based game console ever made. It was nowhere as successful as the original PlayStation, but it had far superior hardware technology as the original PlayStation.
I had the FZ10. It was an awesome gaming machine. My favorite game was GEX! First game I ever played with a curse word in it,
Finally you reviewed that thing.
How dare he not talk about Alone in the Dark, which is considered(at least, in my point of view) as a classic!
My brother and I have this system and it is an awesome game system 😄👍
I have wanted to see him mention "Plumbers don't wear ties"
