I have a Jaguar, and I actually kind of like it. In regards to the question, "Was it a bad system?" I think you need to define what makes a good system. As a piece of hardware, I think it was actually quite good. It came out about halfway between SNES and PS1. If you look at games like Alien vs Predator, Battlemorph, and Rayman, I think it looks pretty good for being half way between those system. But then there's the other way to look at a system's value. Was it a good deal for the customers that bought them? I hate to say it, but no. Atari was nearly bankrupt and no one else put much effort into developing for it. So despite having good hardware, the very limited number of games were mostly shoddy uninspired shovel ware. If you liked button mashing arcade games, it did have some decent games in those genres, but there was very little that reflected the direction games were taking on the PS1 or N64.
If it had of had less power and released two years earlier it would have been a raging success but it actually got released right at the end of the Cartridge games cycle. The N64 was a disaster as it simply got smashed by the playstation and the dreamcast was far too late to the game. By the time Dreamcast started to get traction the Playstation was selling hundreds of millions of games.
@@alicyjinx8923 It was a more powerful console than the SNES or Genesis. The problem it had was no lack of games and it was trying to compete right at the end of the SNES and Genesis cycle.
That’s actually a very good campaign and the Atari hardware was really good. What killed the Jaguar was Sam Tramiels inability to play nice with 3rd party developers. When I visited Atari on several occasions it was obvious that the tools for the Jaguar were lacking and only the internal devs were working on games because Sam was so horrible at courting devs. If you gave the Jaguar to Capcom or Konami the story would have ended differently.
There is a cd addon. It's called the Atari jaguar cdi I believe. They're rare and hard to find in working condition. But if you can get your hands on a working one you should review it.
I don't know Mark...I disagree with this review. The Jaguar was cutting edge in 1993/1994. For the time it had the very best version of both Wolfenstein 3d and Doom you could get on consoles. Alien vs. Predator was unlike anything we had ever witnessed on consoles before. It also had a near perfect version of NBA Jams that was a real showstopper. I don't understand why you think the tech behind the Jaguar was outdated in 1993/1994. I mean, hardware wise it murders the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and the Snes quite soundly. None of those consoles or add-on could run AVP for example. Further, it was capable of throwing insane amounts of sprites on screen and did Super Scaler games like nobodies business. This was a very rare miss for CGR....damn and I wanted to trademark Melt-O-Vision for myself.
I bought a Jaguar because I could play Doom and Wolfenstein 3D for under £300 when a pentium 1 PC cost over £1000. I was very smart though and mailed it to my younger brother when I bought a SEGA 32X.
I remember seeing adverts for the Jaguar in Hyper game magazine when it was released but I never saw any in the shops etc. Come to think of it I have never seen one at all to date.
Amazing to think that, despite the Jaguar being massively underappreciated, it was partly responsible for the SEGA Saturn's initial hardware designs. SEGA took notice of the Jaguar when the system was revealed and started development on what would become the Saturn in an attempt to compete with it.
This console is stupid expensive now. Glad I picked one up. Missed opportunity by Atari. Great marketing. “Do the math” “64 bit” wasn’t even a true 64 bit machine. Just 2 32 bit processors.
I restored one in April. Doom, Rayman and Theme Park play well on it. Rayman doesn't have load times and the Doom port is the best console one I have played (haven't played even half of them).
I'm more worried about how exposed it is to everything. Hopefully the system originally had a cover for that part. The cartridge slot is a disaster just because it lacks doors to prevent dust from having easy access into it. That isn't good.

I had a Jaguar with nearly a complete library of games. Someone seemed to need worse than I and stole it. I myself liked the system. It had a lot of potential but, never had a developer who tried to push its capabilities. Atari didn't seem to support it either. They have Forza 5, Watch Dogs, Trials Fusion, Dead Rising 3, Thief, Wolfenstein the new order and Titanfall if you like FPS games anymore.
Hey Mark got another Jag!!! I know he traded his original one for a blender and the only good thing about the system then was the Melt-O-Vision in Tempest 2000. This should be fun just like how his Phillips Cdi review was. I dunno but I couldn't stop laughing during that Tina Turner video.
I wonder what the jaguar is truly capable of, I know that the games on the console itself doesnt fully demonstrate its capabilities (although a few like avp and rayman do a pretty good job with the hardware) but has anyone in the homebrew community done it? Curious if it was capable of 3do or Playstation visuals or not.
I still have my Jaguar that I got when I was about 14 years old during a so-called "fire sale" at a local toy store. I have to agree with what he said. The system itself is great it's just that there aren't any game for it worth playing. Syndicate was pretty good but that's the only one I can think of. Also, you could totally use Sega Genesis controllers on your Jaguar. The console was even designed around that same input scheme.
@@andycraig7734 I can literally do it right now. You can even use old Atari controllers although, you wouldn't want to. It's also the same controller port used by the C64. I'll make a video about it once I finally dust off my Commodore. :)
Atari Jaguar flopped because it was so ridiculously overpriced at least here in Finland. And talking about games the Jaguar had the best Doom-port available for any console at the time.

Bring back plastic game room!
Unfortunately, Mark has moved into other things. He does make occasional vids in Patreon though. He sold off the disco ball, his microphone, tons of games and arcade games. He (and a couple others) inspired me to start up my channel this year. Maybe I’ll never be as big, but I try to entertain. Long live the memory of CGR!
@@GAMECLOSET How could he sell the disco ball. It was totally Lando... I'll check out your channel !
@@StigMug i almost bought it! Haha!
What's crazy I had some thing from Atari it was a blues clues learning program on the window xp I still have the instruction manual
Was nice to see a bit of Game Room at the end there :3 I know the answer id probably no (or I won't get one at all lol), but I don't suppose theres a chance of you bringing back some of the ones you missed when you did the dvd? Would be kinda cool, s'all i'm saying :D
I seen one in a yard sale for $20
You already did a review on this. Do a review on the Xbox One instead.
Nobody wants that
***** I do.
Yeah if he destroys the thing xD
Nah just joking it isn't a bad console but just like the Wii U it isn't getting many good games
***** The Wii U has got quite a few good games now, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D world, Monster Hunter 3, Sonic Lost World, Legend Of Zelda Windwalker and a massive selection of the best Nes/Snes and soon too be added N64.The Xbox One also has a lot of good games considering it is still in its first year of launch, and you don't get many games released in the first year of launch.
Curious if it was capable of 3do or Playstation visuals or not.
may you review newer gaming pc's? I am having trouble on which one to choose :P
No, as there are three rows of pins on the Jaguar joystick connector. Same as Atari STe computer, possibly more rare than the Jag!
@@andycraig7734 I can literally do it right now. You can even use old Atari controllers although, you wouldn't want to. It's also the same controller port used by the C64. I'll make a video about it once I finally dust off my Commodore. :)
Super Burnout needed some love from CGR! LOL I remember that old T2K review.... good times.
Atari Jaguar flopped because it was so ridiculously overpriced at least here in Finland. And talking about games the Jaguar had the best Doom-port available for any console at the time.
We bought a Jaguar because it was cheap and 64 bits...We also bought a Sega CD. Yea we took a couple L'S in the early 90's. Although Sega CD was alot better than the Jaguar IMO lol
I would agree Sega cd had Sonic cd, lunar 1 & 2, Shinning force and Snatcher to name a few which were better than anything on the jag
I had one of these and a few games for it. I think they were Cybermorph, Kasumi Ninja, and AvP. AvP was actually kinda decent, but the other two... man. Just. Man.
Am I the only one who googled "vectrex turbo panther"?
(edit: mispelled turbo)
Why did the Jungle Hunt - Atari 5200 review get takin down ?
Probably wanted to remove the "Pitfall" bloopers :)
whats your next video could be resident evil revelations 2 or GPD Gaming Tablet
How is this the 3rd oldest atari jaguar video on TH-cam. Did no one care till 2014
I know a good game for the Atari jaguar, Rayman! Alien vs predator isn't to bad either.
altari carts I heard was also good (it's altari + super mario kart)
+Omar Mohammed WOW couldnt have not notice that
I've always wondered what he says at the start: "Banished from earth (something) game room broadcasts..."
Anyone know?
Bro, it's the Classic Game Room, the title of the series!
oh, lol. it sounds like one word.
I'm a video game vet and I never knew this existed 😓🤔😮😮😮
Man was that a blast from the past. I love it 😀
Turbo GrafX-16?!? That was Dead in North America before the Jaguar Launched! However wildly popular in Japan as the PC Engine even in 93/94! 🙄Still almost an all time underrated console with a pretty decent library of almost 100 Hu-card games to play! 😎
I bought one! It came with Cybermorph. I kept it for three months and not a single other game was released so I sold it. Cybermorph gets boring after 3 months.
Tempest 2000 FTW!

Watch Dave's face while Mark reads the back of the box. Just watch it.
it also has a great doom port
I remember playing one of these things when I was in hospital as a teenager and I'm sure it slowed my recovery haha
Bring back Dave. Or rea post some old ones for throw back Thursdays.
Well i like the atari jaguar
From Mark's revew of the PSP Go;
PSP Gooo. Where is it going. Why couldn't they call it after some bad ass animals like the thunderbird. How about we call it the PSP Beaver
"Stop playing with your beaver in class!"
Wait is that a PCI slot for the cartridges
I got the Atar Jaguar CD since 1995 before the N64
Atari jaguar had good games like doom rayman ailen vs predator and tempest 2000
"Where did you learn to fly?"
I love the atari Jaguar
Why did Atari name their systems that succeeded the 7800 after cats?
