3DO, to me, was ahead of its time and unfortunately priced too high to really compete. It was almost like a 32-bit preview, with clean full-motion video and multimedia functionality- and had several gems for games.
Madden on 3DO was impressive for its time. The definitive 32-bit versions of Road Rash and Need For Speed are there. Crystal Dynamics put together some great games for it, like Gex and Total Eclipse.
The library isn’t large, but I think it’s a platform worthy of owning for the right price.

jgfjgfify The only reason I owned a 3DO was that I bought one used at a local independent game store and got a great deal from the owner. I never would’ve spent $700.
I also got in very late (early 1995). It wasn’t long before I traded it away towards a launch PlayStation- but, by that time, the console’s value was already tumbling.

The 3DO was essentially designed to be like the VCR of video games. If it had survived, the price of hardware would have dropped as more manufacturers came on board much the way that VCRs dropped from $1000 to $150 within a few years.

Man, I recently hooked my 3DO back up. Last night I looked in my tall-box 3DO Road Rash and found the soundtrack CD along with John Madden Football... no Road Rash. D: At least there's a PSX tall-box Road Rash on the same shelf, but I was really looking forward to trying out my 3DO copy!

Loved the 3DO - when it hit the market it was so far ahead of the 16 bit consoles and even the PC. They dropped the price to 399 in late ‘94 which is when I bought mine. For a short time it was killing it - then Sony dropped the PS1 and outspent 3DO on marketing. It died quick!

I was a manager for Babbage’s during the Panasonic 3DO launch period. It was indeed $700. During a company wide contest I won a system. This was supposed to boost sales through feedback to our customers. It never really worked. Again, $700 was a lot of scratch, especially in 1994. I still have mine, with several games, and it still works. It was a great system and was ahead of its time.

My dad got a 3DO from a dude in front of a pawn shop that said he'd trade him if he bought him a guitar in the shop. I used to love Road Rash, Street Fighter and Samurai Showdown. He also had a "grown-up" game I was not allowed to play but every now and then I found it in the disk tray lol.

    Hi,
I was one of those crazies that got the 3DO when it came out here in the UK and it's still one of my favourite consoles. If you're looking for recommendations I would go for:
Return Fire (probably my favourite on the console, in both single and two-player. Very strategic and the use of classical music is great)
    Gex
Wing Commander III (which you have)
Road Rash (the best version of this game on any console!)
Road & Track Presents: Need For Speed
    The Horde
Demolition Man (not great, but still fun and Stallone and Snipes filmed stuff just for the game)
Way of the Warrior (again not great, but it's interesting to see the beginnings of Naughty Dog)
Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels
FIFA International Soccer (look up the cheats as Hot Potato Mode is a blast in two-player)
The Twisted Gameshow and Zhadnost: The People's Party are fun party games
    Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Slayer
    Off-World Interceptor
    The Shockwave series
There are also excellent versions of Cannon Fodder, Syndicate and Theme Park
I would recommend getting hold of an official gamepad, if you can, as all of the third party pads (except the six button pad released with Super Street Fighter II Turbo) are very cheap and nasty. Probably even harder to get hold of is the 3DO flightstick, although it makes a hell of a difference when it comes to Wing Commander, Flying Nightmares and Star Fighter (hard to recommend the latter two without it).
Interesting fact about the 3DO: There is no copy protection on the CDs. Use that information however you like :)

    • @Grail_Quest
      @Grail_Quest 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed, flight stick is a must for Wing Commander 3. I would also recommend Shockwave, Alone in the Dark 1 & 2, Escape from Monster Manor and if you like RPG's, Guardian War. 3DO is a beautiful system that at one brief point in time was cutting edge electronic sophistication. Will always be my fave console. If only it's successor, the M2 could have made it to market.

Hey, John! FYI, when you see people close the drive tray by pushing it they aren't actually pushing it in. It retracts on its own after you nudge it. It's designed to and I've never seen a tray-load drive that doesn't. The button is pretty much there for ejecting only. Heck, there are many PCs that block the button and only let you eject with software.
It's literally the exact same as a slot load where you nudge the disc in and it triggers the mechanism to draw it in automatically but you have to hit a button to eject it. Many people "follow" the disc in with their hand so it looks like they are pushing it but that's not usually necessary. I only find myself doing that if my nudge caused the disc to hop out of alignment and I try to correct it on the way in.

@@jgfjgfify "Allowed other companies"? The 3DO console was ALWAYS made by other companies; the 3DO Company didn't manufacture a thing. This is not like the situation with the NeoGeo at all. 3DO's whole business model was to have other people risk their own money to make and sell the hardware and 3DO just sat back and collected the royalties. Great for 3DO, but crappy for Panasonic and Goldstar where they needed to retail their console for +$700 because the sale of the console itself was the only time they can make money from the 3DO platform unless they started publishing games themselves, like what Panasonic did with Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

    • @stacythomas9916
      @stacythomas9916 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes they did, I have owned at least one copy of every console. The Panasonic fz1 is the original and comes with a slightly larger controller that has a headphone jack but the console is unable to access the internal memory without using a disk. Eventually the tray on mine stopped working and it would sometimes just randomly restart once it got old. Goldstar made a model that was cheaper and this console model is the least reliable of the bunch and most likely to stop working, it also had some issues using burned disks which I liked to use to protect my original copies. I would not reccommend the Goldstar at all unless you get it free. Sanyo briefly made a Japanese version called the Try, I'd rank it above the Goldstar but below the fz1. The reason I would avoid this one is due to rarity because it will be totally impossible to find a part for if needed. The best choice imo is the Panasonic fz10, by far. It is the one with the lid that pops up to insert the CD instead of the tray. It is capable of managing the memory without using a disk to do so and is a very reliable system. It also has slightly faster processing speed than any of the other options. I have had two Fz10s, one which my son took when he moved out to go to college (It still works today) and the other one got stolen during a break in. Both were very old one owner machines that were used a lot and had no issues whatsoever with them.

Best game on the 3DO was Wing Commander 3 Heart of the Tiger. Immercinary was amazing, and Return Fire are a couple of MUST haves. Awesome system... but it came out WAY too expensive for mainstream gamers. ** another note: the 3DO had better video quality than the PS1, so when those games were ported over, the video quality stunk. I'm glad you're showing this off. Too many people hate this system and have no idea what it did or what games came out on it. I think they confuse it for CDI or something.

    Welcome to the 3DO family.
The system is not copy protected so explore the library that way.
I ti s a little difficult to find games in the wild.
    Games I would suggest:
    Burning solder
    Escape from monster manor
    Hell: a cyberpunk Thriller
    Jurrasic Park Interactive
    Killing time
Mad dog 1 and 2 as well as the light gun
    Pebble beach Golf links
    Pretty Soldiaer Sailor moon s
    Quarantine
    Real pinball
    roadrash
    Slayer
    Space Pirates
    The Daedalus Encounter
    The Eye of the Typhoon
    Twisted the game show
and Finally Way of the Warrior

If you're into Full Motion Video (FMV), then anything made by Digital Pictures (e.g., NighTrap, Ground Zero Texas, Double Switch, etc) is great. I have a 3D0 since day one and over about 20plus years, I have obtained all the games (nearly 321 plus). I absolutely love this console! Happy hunting and playing. BTW, the Wing Commander series is awesome on this platform.

Remember when I was younger that I rented the 3DO from video store on weekends. Night Trap, Strahl, Burning Soldier, D, Space Hulk, and any gun game is some good cringey fun (Space Pirates FTW!). Best 3DO model released imo is the Sanyo TRY from Japan.

This era in video games was really experimental. Companies were using emerging technologies to see where they could push it, and they weren't always good. The next great wave (at least for me) came during the time of the XBOX and PS2.

I had Wing Commander III on PS1. It was 4 discs I think. I still have it but it is currently in storage. I loved that game. I never had a 3DO but a friend of mine bought it and spent like $600-$700 on it when it first came out. I did the same thing as you, I bought a PS1 instead. Anyway, very cool that you got it and enjoy Wing Commander III and the rest of the game you got! Cheers!

I remember at the video store around the corner from my house where I use to rent video games from eventually started carrying 3DO Games and even a system to rent. I'm guessing at least one person had the system (or rented it) as the games themselves seemed to be rented most of the time. They maybe carried about 16 games overall.
Eventually the 3DO would go up for sale and at $70, that's the cheapest I've seen it. Somebody grabbed it but I eventually got the N64 they rented out which was also $70.
I do have a copy of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the 3DO and I've seen 3DO Consoles for sale every once in awhile but excluding maybe online, they go for usually $200 or more. I know the 6 button controllers that eventually came out are almost impossible to find, let alone being able to get one at a decent price. I've played my SSF2T on a 3DO Emulator before but part of me wouldn't mind playing it on actual console, 3 button controller be darned.
I've only played a handful of 3DO Games in my lifetime but I think it was a good system that just costed way too much and eventually the lack of titles compared to Sony, Nintendo and Sega's systems also contributed to its demise.

Recommend Family Feud. I used to had a 3DO picked it up at ZenkaiCon (anime convention) for $70 I believe. I had Family Feud long before I had the system. I forgot what game I got to go with the system, but traded it all in. Kinda missed it though. It had the standard 3 button controller which have the player 2 port on the top of the controller next to the right shoulder button.

IMO Super street fighter 2 turbo is one of the best ports till this day.
I love the Panasonic 3DO FZ-1 deck and still have mine till this day you scored John.
Only issue i have ever had was resoldering caps and cleaning the board otherwise awesome.
Good luck on finding games tho.
Also look for Advance Dungeon & Dragon's Slayer a doom clone dungeon crawler worth ever penny.
Anyhow let me shut my mouth and enjoy your 3DO buddy.

Still have and love my 3DO, always felt it was an underrated system. Road Rash, Need For Speed, Twisted: The Game Show, Slam N Jam 95', Super StreetFighter II Turbo, John Madden Football, Myst, and Way of the Warrior were all great games. I also enjoyed Battle Chess, Gex, and the light gun games (Mad Dog Mcree and Crime Patrol). 3DO's Road Rash, Need for Speed, and Slam N Jam are still to this day my favorite games for their respective genres.
