Have to say, the 3DO had two great things lacking on pretty much every other consoles in history: an S-video port and a headphone jack on the controller. That was just brilliant.
@SPeacockYeah, S-Video seemed to be an NTSC thing Same with YPbPr, apparently, with the PAL GameCube and Xbox having all their high-resolution options disabled. Ironically then, the PS2 ended up with the most progressive-scan games in PAL regions.
The 3DO port of Doom is an interesting tale - a single programmer had something like 10 weeks to do the entire thing, all while the CEO was making wild promises.

If it weren't for the 3DO, then Naughty Dog would have never made Way of the Warrior and got in touch with Sony and Universal. LGR, I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I'm so excited I gotta tell you! I got so lucky with my Panasonic 3DO FZ-1! I was at a thrift store and it was sitting amongst a bunch of CD players without a controller (I'm pretty sure the Panasonic logo threw them off- they probably just thought it was a CD player!), and bought it for 8 dollars! I already had extra video cords at home, and the only thing I had to buy in order to complete the console was a controller, which I was able to snag off of Amazon for about 10 bucks. And the best part? There was a copy of VR Stalker already in the drive. Long story short, I have a working 3DO and I'm playing VR Stalker on it, and all told I spent less than 20 bucks!
I remember looking at the 3DO back around 1994 or 95 with a friend when we were at a used game store. They were selling it for I recall $399 for the system used. He played some Mortal Kombat clone on it and while it looked good, it didn't look near $400 good. I do own one now, but that's primarily because I found it for a little over $10 at my local thrift store. And I do have some pretty good games for it, like Quarantine, Samurai Shodown, Wing Commander 3 and more I got on the cheap. After 20 years it still holds up. The FZ-1 is certainly good quality console-wise.

Your old videos hold up man. I kinda like the laid-back, relaxed style of them. TH-cam culture has morphed over the years into a very high-energy presentation platform. These are chill, maaaaaaaan.
I love the 3DO so much, I have two. One NA model and one JP Model, just because one game isn't compatible with the US one! One interesting thing, the best version of Out of this world, Road Rash and Need for speed were released on thw 3DO. I own every versions of theses games, even the late aniversary HD edition of Another World(Out of this world) and they are not better(beside higher resolution). The latter HD version of Out of this world is even missing sound effects!! Sound is better on the 3DO than the Playstation.
Domspun Yeah, something that a lot of people don't think about is the fact that games that were originally released for the 3DO that got ported to the PS1 run and look better on the 3DO. A good example is Shockwave. The PS1 release doesn't even have a blue sky in the first level, just a black background without even any stars. Road Rash on the 3DO has a better draw distance then the PS1 release, and Gex looks better on the 3DO. I personally think that the PS1 is a better console overall, but again, PS1 ports of 3DO games tend to be inferior to the 3DO originals. And as far as memory management goes, you don't need the disc mentioned in this video-the 3DO will tell you when the memory is full when you try to save one too many games. Then it will let you manage the memory.
+David Halligan Yep. Better graphics, and color. And I love the PS1, and PS2. But the 3DO is in a class by itself with some great titles. And managing game save memory is no issue at all for me.
At age 21, I was one of the idiots that saved and shelled out the $599 (and that was a sale price) for a new FZ-1. It WAS better than anything out there when it was brand new, but it wasn't THAT much better. I enjoyed Total Eclipse...and any sci-fi fan that doesn't love Star Control II: The UrQuan Masters is not a sci-fi fan. Super Street Fighter II was an unresponsive joke. Samurai Showdown was actually a decent port. The Horde was memorable, but ultimately stupid. Wing Commander III was amazing, but the 2nd disc was screwed up so I didn't get to finish it. Overall, a good system, but wasn't worth the price. I ended up selling it and all the games to a friend two years later for $150.
I own all 3 models of the 3DO. I have enjoyed the 3DO for over 20 years. Some of my favorites. Super Wing Commander WCIII GEX Shockwave Series Starblade Road Rash The Need For Speed
I didn't care about the 3DO in the past, because it was considered a bad console and associate with full motion video interactive games which I don't like. But after seen some good presentations, it raised my interest. There were a lot of hidden gems. Also, games I know on PC, but with improved CD audio music. I have never seen such improved Another World port at the time. Wow, it almost looks and sounds like the HD remake on Steam. The music in Doom is the best imho, although the game was terribly slow. Bad luck because they were gonna make a good version, but the development went into hell for two years, so they scrapped and did a fast port (yes it's the software rendered from PC running on the petty 12.5Mhz ARM). Need for Speed was great. Hidden gems that I didn't knew like Killing Time (that atmosphere/music, also nonlinear and huge map like a Castlevania, realtime videos of ghosts and more. Although too slow), Slayer (D&D 3d dungeon crawler I am gonna just start playing) and more. But they suffer from something. The videos I have seen on youtube are smooth. But on real machine it's much slower, almost unplayable. It's a pitty. I tried, the 3do emulators. Yes,. the CPU is the culprit. While ARM was a quite good CPU, 12.5Mhz weren't enough. Just overclock on emulator at 20 or 25 and things start to get much smoother. If they could have added a 25mhz ARM, costs allowed or something, things would be different. All those hidden gem look great on youtube probably because they overclock the emul, but on real machine they are so slow they get unplayable. It's a pitty because I like there was some life in the machine, it wasn't just the FMV interactive crap people think it is. The machine had a 3d GPU similar to Saturn and maybe better (quad rasterizer, now with alpha blending and gouruad shading which I think the Saturn was missing) but it needed a better CPU to calculate 3d transformations and what polygons to send and all that. Also, the Doom port on Saturn suffered from the same, hasted port of software renderer from PC, but of course because of higher speed CPU it was not as slow. Only on PS1 they really utilized the hardware to make a great version. Anyway, good review. At least, I still enjoy a great version of Super Street Fighter 2 (dat music, SF classic but remastered!) and explore the few 2d or 3d games that can still be playable.
Got to wonder if the ARM CPU is really the culprit you say. I assume the custom floating point unit would be heavily involved in the calculation of the 3D geometry. The ARM 60 had no native floating point nor even a divide instruction, the '386 that were common at the time neither has floating point. The memory bus was the same speed as the processor so there shouldn't be a need for a cache, the video memory is separate VRAM so that won't steal cycles from the processor. A 12.5 Mhz ARM 60 should be around 10 MIP performance, close to the new 486DX that gave 11 MIPs at 33 MHZ and probably cost more than the 3DO. Don't suppose emulators allow speeding up the floating point but leaving the ARM at 12.5 Mhz? That would prove if the ARM was the bottleneck. The 3DO was a very important for ARM, it was the first consumer product that didn't come from ARM's founders Acorn and Apple computers. I had Acorn's Achimedes computer at the time and was hoping lots of games would get an ARM port and make their way to the Archimedes by way of the 3DO. Star Fighter started as an Archimedes game then got ported to the 3DO.
Wow!! I should start a channel where I review old LGR episodes!! Lol I didn't realize you have been doing this that long. Way to go! I love the ending of this too! I got my 3DO out of a Mad Dog II Arcade cabinet that was falling apart. I got the gun for it to along with the harness.
One reason the boxes for almost all cd's in the early 90's were oversized - the retailers felt it would deter theft. Much harder to stuff one of these massive boxes in your coat pocket.
I think Nintendo copied the shape for the N64.3DO did everything wrong. They should have made the system and lower the price. They could have competed with Neo Geo for less money and swept the house. It's crap and as a collector, I won't miss a damn thing.
Oh man, I remember seeing 3DO displaying Fifa in a store window downtown Toronto. $750.00 later, I brought it home that day. I actually really liked it until the bitter quick end. Thank you for the video. Can't stop watching your stuff.
The Doom port story is well documented online, out was more about not having enough time to optimize. I think this machine was decently powerful, I mean, it got The Need for Speed. And Gex. That was a cool game.
fuck yeah, sweet boards of canada! love the old school mini dv look. Always perplexed me why you use color bars after the title.....an artistic/aesthetic choice yes, but normally color bars go at the beginning of picture. Love your reviews dude!
IMHO I don't care what anybody says about the 3d0 cause I think that it's an underrated console just like the sega cd game gear gamecube psp etc. Heck I bought one back in 2013 and the games I got with it was amazing and being able to put your headphones into the controller to hear the game is pure genius lol
I used to drive down to a best buy store which was about 25 miles from here, skipping over 2 other best buy stores, just to stand around and play their Panasonic 3D0 system. I would stand there for hours playing it. The sales ppl would come up to me every 20 mins and I would just play it off like I am thinking of buying it and kept playing it. Back in 1994 that was pretty cool to play, and I am not sure if there were demo discs for 3Do but that best buy put actual games into it for demo, and they swapped them out every week or so. In 1994, this had very good gfx
Love my 3DO Luciennes Quest is quite fun Wolfenstein plays way better than doom Captain quazar is a Fun exclusive to consoles There is a lot of poo but there are good games too
Video Necro here on a 6 year old post... But your review brought back great memories... I bought my 3DO for full price back in the day.. The best games had to be Shockwave and Crash and Burn. Shockwave had GREAT video for its day and really created an excellent story (you can pull up youtube videos of gameplay). Crash and Burn was a very fun combination of racing and combat with guns and missiles on your car that I loved (I would drive the course backwards to catch people and kill all my opponents). Of the games you listed the Samurai Showdown was an excellent port. But as you said there were some horrific games as well "Microcasm"? and the "Demolition Man" come to mind as absolute turds.
I got my 3do complete back in '98 for $45. The model that is shown here in the video. (The cool-looking one) Came complete with controller, and all the hookups I needed. I use the RCA jacks to hook to my flat screen TV. I think it is a great console, just had too much competition. I have a handful of games for it. And looking to get more, as there are some great titles for it.
There was a MPEG -VideoCD- module and an external memory module available in Japan. Great review. Love my 3DO. My wife likes the look of it too, so it sits in the living room on the shelf. FZ-1. I have a light gun for mine, which is nice, but of course won't work on the LCD TV. It's one of my favorite systems with some great games. But no way I would have paid anywhere near what they were asking when it was released. ;-)
It's not that bad. completely watchable definately not bad where anything about it is irritating.. The unique content on this channel makes it irrelevant. I was born in 85 so alot of the stuff on here I saw and used growing up.
Andy T. Hey, I'm not complaining. I had just watched one of his newest videos before that and it was quite a difference that's all. I didn't really own any of this stuff when I was young. I just like to see all this old and sometimes obscure and weird tech.
Star Control 2 for the 3DO is one of the best games I've played. I know they have it for the PC as well, and it's good, but the voice acting, cinematic's, and music they added in the 3DO version made it worth the money. I bought my 3DO for $400 back in the day. The music in Road Rash is great, listen to the band Paw and Hammerbox in it, that's some underrated music right there. I thought Gex was way more entertaining than Crash Bandicoot. Great review like usual LGR.
I remember watching a gut shell out about $740 for one of these at Babbage's. I remember thinking I'd go ahead and get a few more miles out of my SNES. Glad I did.

Guess every trash mus still have fans
Wow I didn't know you've been around this long. Glad I can watch all of these old videos.
the 3do version of wolfenstein 3d is amazing! and the port of doom isn't that bad either ':)
I like that short Krüder & Dorfmeister audio clip at the end!
the "two Clints" editing reminds me of Natalie Tran - but she never stopped doing it.
I think 3DO and Sega CD are both underrated in certain ways!
Yes your right both are underrated both systems should be more appreciated for how shitty there really were
Got mine for $100 Canadian and was and still am super happy with it. Mr X only makes an appearance in the 3D0 version of NFS for some reason too...
3do was so ahead of its time and it ruled all other systems of the time. i still have mine by goldstar
Uh....
I loved my 3DO! I barely remembered having it until I watched this. Brought back a LOT of good memories.
I like how he played Blew by Nirvana XD
Bleach is an awesome record !
Jerry Mondragon My ears perked up the moment I heard the initial riff. Great song.
12 years later, still a good video.
Holy shit this is totally Boards of Canada's Noglax playing in the background!
Watching in 2021
Still quality content
I think it is awesome you have been uploading and active for as long as you have been :)
I own all 3 models of the 3DO. I have enjoyed the 3DO for over 20 years.
Some of my favorites.
Super Wing Commander
WCIII
GEX
Shockwave Series
Starblade
Road Rash
The Need For Speed
I got one after the first price reduction and Road Rash, Need for Speed, Star Control II, CPU Bach were my favs
Jeff Cossey isn't there 4 models of 3do?
I miss your lo-fi old school looking intros. To be honest they have a charm and timelessness about them. You should bring them back,
1:41 "that is so lame, but it is so RAD"
Ah TIM, brings back memories. When I was a kid one of my schools used to have it on the computer and we used to play it as part of the class.
The 3do and the Atari jaguar are like cousins
they both started in 1993 and ended in 1995
Because of Sony's PlayStation
Thank god cause those system were shit compare to PlayStation
Oh man I love when I stumble upon one of your old videos
Woah, your voice has changed a lot in 8 years!
Yea it's called puberty, bruh. Anyone who's ever seen the Brady Brunch reruns knows this.
It's amazing how much your production quality has increased since 2010.
*Coughs....Plumbers Don't Wear Ties....Coughs*
One reason the boxes for almost all cd's in the early 90's were oversized - the retailers felt it would deter theft. Much harder to stuff one of these massive boxes in your coat pocket.
I think Nintendo copied the shape for the N64.3DO did everything wrong. They should have made the system and lower the price. They could have competed with Neo Geo for less money and swept the house. It's crap and as a collector, I won't miss a damn thing.
I still have my 3DO from 1994. It still works and plays games flawlessly. Love it.
When you're feeling so nostalgic you watch retro TH-cam videos about retro video game consoles.
"it's a R•E•A•L piece of shit" -AVGN
Rabid I love avgn but I love my 3do. it has some great games. I play the hell out of my 3do
Oh man, I remember seeing 3DO displaying Fifa in a store window downtown Toronto. $750.00 later, I brought it home that day. I actually really liked it until the bitter quick end. Thank you for the video. Can't stop watching your stuff.
TRIP HAWKINS?!?!😂😂😂 That is the MOST 90'S NAME EVER!!! 😂
Except he was born in the 1950s, but y'know :P
Man. This old intro nostalgia from watching you from 2010 :)
The Doom port story is well documented online, out was more about not having enough time to optimize. I think this machine was decently powerful, I mean, it got The Need for Speed. And Gex. That was a cool game.
Its a solid system. I sold mine a while back but I did like it - seemed ahead of its time in some aspects. 'The incredible machine' is awesome!
I like the boards of canada in the background..
Nlogax
Love these oldskool LGR vids, though the do make me feel old.
Best review ending comment.
I am surprised I missed this years ago. I have been watching your channel along time. I had different names over the years, but I always come here.
Boards of Canada background music!?
fuck yeah, sweet boards of canada! love the old school mini dv look.
Try playing "Plumbers Don't wear ties"
AirCooledMan2006 you make some good points that would be amazing
wow I never knew that
I used to drive down to a best buy store which was about 25 miles from here, skipping over 2 other best buy stores, just to stand around and play their Panasonic 3D0 system.
Love my 3DO
Luciennes Quest is quite fun
Wolfenstein plays way better than doom
Captain quazar is a Fun exclusive to consoles
There is a lot of poo but there are good games too
Yeah a lot of poo but great games too!!!
But as you said there were some horrific games as well "Microcasm"? and the "Demolition Man" come to mind as absolute turds.
boards of canada
The track is Nlogax for those unfamiliar
Which part of the video?
@@Gekneveld the beginning til 3:28.
5:31 Nirvana - Blew. Nice LOL.
my same thoughts
There was a MPEG -VideoCD- module and an external memory module available in Japan.
Great review. Love my 3DO. My wife likes the look of it too, so it sits in the living room on the shelf. FZ-1. I have a light gun for mine, which is nice, but of course won't work on the LCD TV. It's one of my favorite systems with some great games. But no way I would have paid anywhere near what they were asking when it was released. ;-)
Wow! You've come a long way since video. Even for 2010 quality is pretty bad. Just saying. I like your channel overall.
That's what happens when it's a hobby with literally zero budget :)
And thanks, I've tried my best to make it look more respectable!
I can't believe you actually answered! :D Keep up the good work!
Very cool channel!
Still one of the BEST LGR videos ever.
I guess they skipped the letters L M N O P Q And R and another company went with S 😉
+Jeffrey LaButte I don't get it.
+andrewbelmont665 Nintendo 3DS
Glad I did.
lol... compares SNES with 3DO. how was life growing up in an 8 bit world?
You and all the other Nintendo sheep. You were playing Donkey Kong while we had the amazing 3do. Must have sucked to be you.
