Okay that whole "extension" mechanic pisses me off... Because why the hell does it not work like that in newer titles? Limiting the inputs to only the face buttons (i.e. triangle to square rather than left and triangle) limits the amount of grinds you're able to get into. In THUG you can't switch to board/lipslide, overcrook, feeble, or any special tricks mid grind. As a skater this is infuriating as it limits the single grind combos that are possible.

In my opinion, THPS4 PSE feels a little incomplete. Custom Skater has no pro goal, but its ending movie (More Bails) can be unlocked. Not to mention collecting decks only affects all of the pro skaters and the currently-selected Custom Skater. If you collect every deck, but none of your custom skaters have access to the Visions deck, then you must start a New Career and collect all seven decks with the same custom skater for the Visions deck. Even worse, completely clearing Career Mode does not unlock all of the tricks for all of the skaters. However, getting a third medal unlocks all of the special tricks (counting Little Person's special tricks). Not to mention some tricks didn't get new animations, like the Seatbelt Air (Weddle) and the Crail Grab (Indy Nosebone). The only new trick animations I see are Flap Jack, Flip Yo Self, Food Poisoning and Little Person's special tricks (Little Tornado, Little Head Push & Little Bed). Not even the 6th gen versions had Flap Jack, Flip Yo Self and Food Poisoning, as these special tricks were intended for a cut bonus character. It's a shame since THPS3 and THPS4 had 16 playable skaters each (Custom Skater included), while THPS2 had 17 playable skaters. Speaking of why the previous-gen version exists, it was released at a time where 6th gen consoles other than the Dreamcast weren't widely available, and finding those machines was nearly impossible. As a result, the 5th gen ports were produced to make the game more accessible to consumers at times like this.
1st World Country person: "No one knew this previous-gen version of the game even existed, because as soon as the next-gen released, every single person in the country was able to afford it." I didn't even know Pro Skater 3 and 4 had a "better" version (the original ones), I thought Underground was the first one to have that improvement from the last generation of consoles. Also, yeah, hate that "super ollie" thing. Very weird. To me it felt like a glitch with the level out mechanic which allowed you to "level out" anywhere, any time, and maybe the level out feature gave you a small jump boost.
12:55 It is possible to play this game with a GameCube controller if you have a PS3 and a PS3-compatible USB GameCube controller adapter. However, you must remap the shoulder buttons and reassign the tricks accordingly. If flip tricks are assigned to the Circle/B button, triple tapping gets disabled unless they are assigned to the Square/X button. What a way to limit yourself.
24:44 Treyarch would've been the next company to develop a Tony Hawk game, considering their history with the series dating as early as the Dreamcast days.
its just baity titles to get people to click.. it got me to click cause i was like.. theres a tony hawk game i dont know? but ive played all of them lol
PS1 and PSX are more or less interchangeable but I don't think Sony ever actually used the PSX term themselves, just something that came along organically.
It's a stupid term that South America coined in the early days. It was meant for PS as a whole, hence the X, but it started being used for 1 exclusively somehow by everyone. It's PS1 or PSOne officially.
Grrat video! Thank you! The PS2/XBox versions were too fast and slick for my liking. I really didnt like them at all. Like some hyper race to have sore thumbs. I took a bus to the city to a music store to buy THPS4 on PS1. It was $70. I went to nearby bar and spilt beer on the manual while reading it. Better than THPS3. I dont remember ever using the super double ollie or leaning the manuals to the side. I tried to buy this game again but the disc was to scratched to play. It would play even when resurfaced. The only other TH games I like after this was the two that were made on the NDS. P.S. I still play Thrasher Skate and Destroy on PS1 and compete for high scores on TH-cam. Teehee
I really liked your comment! sounds comfy af. I personally grew up playing thps 1+2 demo versions and then later got thps 3-4-ug1/2 for PS2. I still appreciate the PS1 version and have never played it. In fact, I did not even know they existed for PS1 and N64! That for me is awesome
I wish this and the original and all other levels and call it Tony Hawk pro skater 4 complete And the same with 3 I had all 4 on ps1 and everything on ps2 from 3 to proving ground
I didn't mind it on original Xbox, but it's not amazing; I really didn't like the next gen version by Neversoft at all, and regardless of which version you play, the create-a-skater is pretty bad. It has less options than Project SK8land on Nintendo DS.
I'm in total shock of how negative you are towards this game. its just that you may be used to the ps2 version and found everything a downgrade. But as someone who got used this one before, this game is a an absolute masterpiece, I play it for years and Im always finding new things to do with it. The controls are great, i just personally hate manuals and almost never do them. but I do huge combos easily with grinding, wallriding, vert tricks and lip extensions.
This port is so bad. The definition of “we have Tony Hawk at home”. I never thought I could have so little fun playing a TH game. I’d just played Tony Hawk’s Underground round my cousin’s house and I wanted more of that so I asked my Mum to buy me this for my PS1. Compared to THUG (and even PS2 THPS4), it was so lifeless and drab. I was too dumb as a kid to realise that I could have just got a better Tony Hawk game for the PS1, like THPS 2.
Fun fact: I didn't even know THPS4 was available for PS2 in the days. I just enjoyed the PSX version for years until near 100% completion.

1st World Country person: "No one knew this previous-gen version of the game even existed, because as soon as the next-gen released, every single person in the country was able to afford it."
I didn't even know Pro Skater 3 and 4 had a "better" version (the original ones), I thought Underground was the first one to have that improvement from the last generation of consoles.
This game gave me insomnia 😂
24:44 Treyarch would've been the next company to develop a Tony Hawk game, considering their history with the series dating as early as the Dreamcast days.
another PS1 feature =
bob burnquist and rodney mullen have the same "pointing finger" model, dont ask why
dude wtf?? how is this game forgotten?? i still play this awesome game! (:
its just baity titles to get people to click.. it got me to click cause i was like.. theres a tony hawk game i dont know? but ive played all of them lol
Can someone explain to me why the PS1 is sometimes called the PSX? I’m aware of the actual PSX, but that’s unrelated.
Wauw, I didn’t know about the dismount trick.
Solid video. Subbed.
your grinding ledges fact isnt quite right. you can grind curbs in the ps2 releases of project 8 and american wasteland.
fantastic video!
That for me is awesome
video goood
i wonder how forgotten this game really is cause some of these maps would be cool to run in THUG Pro and i dont think ive ever seen them.
I played 3 and 4 on the GCN
i got thps3 and thps4 on ps1 before i got to buy ps2 and then thps3 and thps4 on ps2 :D
I wish this and the original and all other levels and call it Tony Hawk pro skater 4 complete
And the same with 3
I had all 4 on ps1 and everything on ps2 from 3 to proving ground
I never knew. Thanks.
Thps 2 was the best. I'm a monster at it, and will wreak anyone at it.
My current Venice record in 11 mil, what's your best?
Buttslap is called because you slap your buttons btw
For me it’s THPS1>THPS3>THPSU
Am I the only one that really enjoyed project 8?
8:41 Jet Set Radio Future, anyone?
This port is so bad. The definition of “we have Tony Hawk at home”. I never thought I could have so little fun playing a TH game.
I’d just played Tony Hawk’s Underground round my cousin’s house and I wanted more of that so I asked my Mum to buy me this for my PS1. Compared to THUG (and even PS2 THPS4), it was so lifeless and drab. I was too dumb as a kid to realise that I could have just got a better Tony Hawk game for the PS1, like THPS 2.
