I have more facts: 1. The Dreamcast didn't have a Select button, so that means you must press L, R and Start all at once to change camera views or change the split-screen settings in THPS and THPS2. 2. The taxi drivers do not speak on the Nintendo 64 version. Clashing into a taxi car means no comment from the driver. 3. The Treyarch-developed versions of THPS2 use blue-colored balance meters instead of the red-colored ones in other versions. 4. The Xbox version allows personalized music to be played in each level. It is possible to do this in Club London, but its level music will play again on your next run unless you change the level. 5. The only local multiplayer mode present on the Windows/PC version is Horse. The other multiplayer modes are either LAN modes or online play. 6. Female custom skaters are only present in the Xbox version. 7. The Xbox version is the only Tony Hawk release with 3 and 4 player split screen support. Even the 2020 remake didn't have these game modes. 8. (Xbox) During 3 and 4 player split screen modes, a third camera view can be accessed. 9. Custom Skater's ending movie uses "Guerrilla Radio" on Xbox, while "Blood Brothers" is used on other versions. 10. Tricks and decks cannot be bought in other modes on the Xbox version. However, it is possible to buy tricks and decks in other modes on the other versions of the game. 11. Blood physics were removed from the Nintendo 64 version, also affecting incomplete combo text. Blood physics can also be turned off in the other versions, but is done via pause menu button code. 12. The word "Hell" is censored in the Nintendo 64 version of THPS2, despite not being censored in THPS3's N64 port. 13. In the Korean PC version, the FIN.K.L members all use the custom skater's ending movie and first eight decks. 14. The FIN.K.L members are moveset clones of other existing skaters. As far as I know, Sung Yu Ri has Rune Glifberg's tricks and Lee Hyo Ri has Bob Burnquist's tricks. Same can be said for Ock Joo Hyun with Burnquist's tricks and Lee Jin with Campbell's tricks. 15. The GBA version of Hangar has the secret areas switched around. 16. The PlayStation version has a Create-A-Skater exploit that launches homebrew such as TonyHax from your PlayStation Memory Card. You need the modified save file and homebrew app loaded onto the memory card to make this exploit work. It also works for the Create-A-Skater modes for THPS3 and THPS4. 17. If you enable the "Always Special" cheat, 2P can perform 1P's special tricks in Horse Mode. 18. Like THPS3 and THPS4, Horse mode makes it so 2P has all of 1P's tricks. 19. Enabling "Smooth" and "Moon Physics" cheats makes all of the foreground completely white. 20. Your previously-entered High Score Initials do not get memorized on the Xbox version, always defaulting to "AAA" every time you get a new High Score. 21. Clearing Career Mode on the Xbox version forces the motion blur settings to on, even if you turned them off prior. 22. Tag mode would return for THPS3 and THPS4, but only for the PlayStation ports. THPS3 N64 has Tag if I recall correctly. 23. You can assign flip tricks to the grab button, as well as grab tricks to the flip button. This applies to THPS3 N64 and THPS3&4 for PlayStation. This is critical to getting the GameCube controllers to work properly on the PS3, as well as getting the Retro Fighters BladeGC and BattlerGC to work on original hardware or PS3. 24. This game was released on all platforms that got Spider-Man (2000), since Activision and Neversoft produced both games in the same year. 25. In the PlayStation ports, your shoulder button settings don't get updated unless you go to the Options mode and access the button configuration menu. Same applies to THPS3&4.
It's a surreal feeling, unlocking Skate Heaven and having it be strikingly similar to my local park, which I frequented to skate. Turns out, it's one of Tony's favorite places to skate in the 80s.
Just to add to the "Wallows" thing, Wallows is an actual skate spot, hence why it was added to Skater Heaven, all of the spots in Skater Heaven are real places
I noticed there's a pre-made park called Montana in every game from 2 onwards, another jab at Joel Jewett, since each rendition of the map has nothing but a tree in the middle lol
THPS2 was peak THPS for me. PS1 tech kinda makes it underwhelming these days but there were LOTS of levels, tons of secret stuff and areas to discover... I think THUG is my favorite Tony Hawk game overall but THPS 2 was the best out of the first 4
I played through the PSX games first, but the OG Xbox titles were and still are legit. The first open world-y one (4 I think) blew my mind lol. Wish they would have done a 3+4 remake or DLC before the devs were absorbed :(
In Asian countries, blood type is treated the same as astrological sign. It helps fingerprint the type of personality you tend to have. This can also be seen in games like early Resident Evil games and such. And if you want to follow up on this video, I suggest booting up THPS 2X again, because on any custom map or in the exclusive maps, if you go over a quarter pipe gap into another quarter pipe, and time a manual as you land on the next quarter pipe, you can actually land into a manual. I personally referred to this as the pre-revert, as at the time THPS2X was released, THPS3 had already been announced, and the revert move was known to be the new ability. Finding this to work in THPS2X makes me wonder how much that game's code borrows from THPS3.
Theres a lot i didn't know about THPS 2x, even though i play it often. The dog on the roof is so funny to me. 2X is so great, I still play online on OG Xbox. I have multiple videos on my page of us playing it. Truly a perfect port. Great video 👍🛹
7:25 I was convinced for all these years the gym opens at some point after you complete the game, because I only ever managed it WELL after I had completed saves, as if it was step one in some kind of process. Never figured out what the other "steps" would have been but it's amazing to learn how to actually do it, thank you.
Thank you again for covering such a wonderful piece of my childhood, Matt! Skate Heaven is still a magical, mystical place for me and my heart was full when I unlocked and played it again on THPS 1+2 recently! I absolutely LOVE that level and it was the place I played the most as a kid on the original.
Interesting fact about the School II gym back door; they're open and usable in the remake! Perhaps Beenox took a page out of the beta's playbook? I'm pretty sure beta New York's giant pillar was supposed to be an exhaust chute of some kind. They have a lot of those in Manhattan, at least.
I guess that, with more modern technology, there are ways to overcome the issues that the devs seemed to encounter when they were originally trying to implement them on THPS2.
The remake had a few interesting differences. -The basketball hoops in NY could not be knocked down. -The staircase section in Skate Heaven uses a backdrop of School II. The gap names, in conjunction with the backdrop, imply that School II is located in San Dieguito (an area in northern San Diego). -A funny but unremarkable glitch can occur in the original game if you try to grind a rail while in the middle of a flip (Indy Frontflip/Backflip, etc.) -Many tricks function completely differently in THPS 1+2 compared to the original games -Side note: In the N64 version of THPS 2, there is no incentive for completing all the gaps because the character that's supposed to appear cannot be unlocked.
Just a fact about South Korean exclusive skaters: in Asia they relate blood type to personalities, with good and bad traits of each type, horoscopes etc.
There being Blood types for the korean characters is because in some other countries blood types are considered as personality traits. Street fighter also has them as a good example, its a really easy way for them to give a character trait to a character with such limited text space. Its never been prevalent over here, so its always confusing to non japan/korean places.
I read somewhere that there was a 2 player mode planned for THPS2, the telltale named "Crash Test Dummy", where the goal was to perform the most spectacular and painful bails possible. Also, various challenge modes were planned (longest manual, longest grind, most air time in a session, etc.).
10:28 Yes, taking a blow to the groin hurts no matter what (if anything) is between one's thighs. It's a sensitive area. 13:24 Ah, yes; memory limitations. Or laziness. Both, mayhaps. 🤷🏻♀ ... Imagine you're boardsliding a rail, your deck snaps in two. You're going down, and the first thing to impact the rail is going to be the groin. That's going to hurt, going to bruise, going to injure, no matter what. #CrawlAwayInjuries
6:57 If you played the PC, Dreamcast or Xbox version the picture clarity becomes clearer since they all run at higher resolutions. Not to mention the Dreamcast version allows the use of a VGA setup, allowing for much higher resolution and video quality than S-Video.
The scream in Beta New York was not used in the final build, as a completely different scream, though muffled, is used. On the PC version, you don't hear the gunshots, though it's unused.
Star signs and blood types are actually a big thing in asian cultures. So no wonder the Korean version includes them. If anything, it showed that who ever did the Korean version knew what they were doing.
2:37 The text on this slope was taken out of the Xbox version. Not only that, this "Wallows" marking was referenced by T.O.M. 2 in a Toonami review for the PlayStation port of THPS2.
The o.g. thps2 on ps1's school level is a take on my alma mater Rancho Buena vista high school in the city of vista. Our school logo is the longhorn logo you see in the Quad. The school use to have pink walls, but was painted white due to grafiti...the dude in the cart is also is a take on the noon guards in our school that rode those carts. One of them tried sueing activision
Love those vids. It would be awesome if you made two free cam videos on THPS 2 and 3, just showing background scenery up close. Things like the far ends of Venice Beach or Canada always mystified me, and I remember doing all kinds of crazy tricks to reach the edges of the maps just to see the backdrop objects closer.
I can’t remember what you do, but in Skate Heaven in the 2X version, you do something where that weird yellow bowl where Tony’s House is in the OG version, turns into a floating bowl.
I did know about that path on Venice, but I found it from the other side. Same skater, though, she had the most rounded stats. Never noticed the auditorium, that made me laugh Montana still doesn't exist.
Fun fact: In 2X you can see developer faces in the stands of the THPS1 skatepark Chicago level. There's also a secret room in the subway level. Awesome video!

Thanks! I will definitely get around to doing the rest of the classic Tony Hawk's games. If you want to add me on Discord to explain it. Please go ahead. :)

Indeed there is! I think I covered this on one of my other Tony videos. :)
Why it is a Jab ? Lmao
With a name like “Joel Jewett” , he must be Scottish!
Shockingly accurate. You ever skate in Montana lmao?
What's the connection?
Just to add to an early point. Wallows is a real spot in Hawaii, so makes sense they re-used it and kept the name.
