    I am a Canon fanboy, but realizing that EOS R does 3 fps just as well as my 5D Classic (of 2005) is... upsetting.

    • @themjian
      @themjian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Haven't you shoot and find that the normal 5fps and tracking priority returns the same accuracy? So forget 3fps. Take it as 5fps. Maybe Canon put that for certain situations or for lenses with smaller aperture. But at f4, and larger, no difference.

    • @enco_m
      @enco_m 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As Canon fanboy you must be raged by 1.74 crop in 4K. I'd never buy such crap. You need to use two sets of lenses: one RF/EF for photo, and another EF-S for video (cause if i bought brand new 85 1.2 for 2700 and EOSR for 2300 i just can't use it - with 1.74 crop its gonna be 144mm f2 - literally unuseable), i'm not that rich. I usually buying one good camera and one good lens and use it for everything. This trick with 1.74 crop not gonna work on me, i'm either not gonna shot HD in 2019, no thanks. Shame.

    • @themjian
      @themjian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@enco_m On a side note, Hollywood guys shooting with an S35 format will be very happy to know your 4K crop comment. And forsmall nunber of people like you who took to run & gun style, one 24-70 f2.8 zoom lens on an Electronic gimbal is fine for both video & photo, all the while such people carry 2 bodies anyway. And in professional environment, you have set of primes anyways, with a separate camera for photo and proper video camera. LOL.. those complaining on video crop factor are generally inexperience hobbyists or simply a forum guy who probably haven't touch the R, or maybe haven't even seen one in real.

      yeah yeah you are totally right, i'm not making money with photography, even though i work on big project few years. but you know what? i'm the customer. most common median customer. EOSR/Z6/A7M3 is made for guys like me. photography enthusiast who buy expensive new gear every 5 years or so. usually most of us have one good camera and one good lens. and EOSR is totally wack here. 1.74crop in 4K? really? and Canon trying to sell me 1.74 crop is just nuts. market is for 90% consist of customers like me. we are the market, not you "super professional boiii". market is me and people like me. thats why so rare people buy EOSR, A7M3 totally killed it. not because they made something outstanding, just because they didn't took user for a bag of money without brain who only wants Canon logo on it. Sony did their job proper, just proper, not great, not overhelming, just proper. REAL 4K? i got it. Good sensor with great ISO and dynamical range? I got it. And other other other stuff which i even don't want talk about. And Canon just brought me bitten cabbagehead (cause they don't want loose money on EOS cinema systems, yeas Canon, many thanks, you will loose you money anyway this way). Cheers from "not really professional" but most common median customer here. All things you said is just excuses for idiotic marketing Canon does to itself.

    I've been a Canon shooter for a while. Looked at switching to Sony because of all the features and autofocus, but I just couldn't get past the small grip. It wasn't comfortable for me to hold. Ended up getting and EOS R when the price dropped (mine came with the adapter) and I'm perfectly happy with it. 1080 video is fine for what I do currently and I get excellent stills results with the eye autofocus (I mostly shoot portraits). The flip out screen was a decision maker as well. I use that all the time.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There's a photographer on TH-cam, I forget who, but he has an EOS R and an A7iii. He compared the 2 for static and moving subjects (model standing still, model walking towards camera on a curved path whilst backlit by bright sky). The hit rate was almost 100% on the EOS R and nowhere near it on the A7iii. The interesting thing was that the Canon shots where it only used face-detection (model too far for eye-detection) were still sharper on her eyes than the A7iii shots which did use eye-detection! That pretty little box over an eye does not guarantee correct focus, it simply indicates the camera has detected the eye.
      Canon shooters have noticed for years that DPAF (even on DSLRs in liveview) tends to nail focus on the eyes.

    @10:10 discussing who gets a tick mark for the mount & lens options - goes to Canon RF because you can adapt all the EF lenses to RF......well, I think you'll find many adapt EF to Sony E too.....so cancelling out that 'advantage' to some degree.
    I see many of the Mirrorless camera mounts as great, because the short flange distance means many older lenses can be adapted to them.

      This is the problem I had. As an enthusiast and hobbyist it's really hard because there is so much choice. If you have the lenses then it makes sense to stick with the system. Not owning any equipment also makes it more expensive because you need a body and a lens, even more so with full frame. I ended up getting a 2nd hand Sony A7rii with a new Tamron 28-75mm. Very impressed so far!

    Great, in-depth review! Thanks.
    Lumix pioneered mirrorless and they have developed a most amazing system... Their success inspired the big guns to follow suit. It's silly you would question it's place on the table... But aside from that.. . Unlimited record time is what brought me to Lumix years ago when I needed to film concerts without interruption. That and the historic GH2's performance in the Zacuto Shootout that was chosen by Coppola and others over the Red and Arri of the day in a blind test. I went out and bought a pile of those little monsters. And I recommend playing with their timelapse and stop animation apps, you can do the most amazing things internally to save days of post production.

I got a Z6 with the 24-70 kit lens, an extra battery, a 32 gb xqd, ftz adapter and a free lowepro bag for around 2170 USD. The a7iii was 1900 USD for just the body. I also got myself the inexpensive f mount 50mm 1.8 G which works fantastic with the adapter. I am extremely happy with the camera. It takes great stills, great videos, slow motions, timelapses. But how do these cameras feel in your hand? The specs are so close, there is nothing that really differentiates them. But which one do you personally get the best results from? Which one of these could you shoot with all day and not be exhausted from holding it? Which one do you want to pick up the next day and do it all over again. And finally, which one fits your overall process of creating images, including post processing the best? These are the questions that really differentiate these cameras. You are one of the few camera reviewers on YTube that actually goes out and shoots with these tools. Please follow this spec comparison with the results of your real world experiences.

    Hey Jared. I went from a 5DII to an A7III. Pretty happy with the switch, but I'm noticing more noise than I used to in my 5D shots. Is this normal? Even your sample shot of the guy splashing water is pretty noisy. I do usually shoot on Aperture priority with auto-ISO. Should I just set the ISO to something low? Thanks!

    • @ScottStPhoto
      @ScottStPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely settings based. The a7iii has a phenomanly better sensor, and has the most dynamic range and lowest noise output in its class. I'd try limiting your ISO range, or shooting on a priority mode with your ISO set to 640. That gives you a decent amount of latitude and 640 ISO on the Sony cameras gives a very clean Film grain look imo.

    • @nolangaudreau
      @nolangaudreau 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottStPhoto Awesome, thanks for the reply. Since you said 640, does that mean just above that is where the noise starts to get really noticeable?

      @@nolangaudreau No, it has a much higher useable range than that. It's just that 640 looks very very film grain-ish. I shoot on my a7riii up to 8000 and get clean images. I'd assume the a7iii could push to 12,800 or more and retain the same quality.

  • @wootpile

    Hi Jared, since you shoot Nikon Z it would be great with a video commenting Nikon's Z default raw profiles that are getting some flak for looking overcooked in many converters with stills having excessive contrast and saturation in both jpegs and RAW conversions with default profiles. Obviously, the in-camera jpeg engine can be tweaked and the raws can be post-processed in 1000 ways and will look different depending on converter, but the default raw profiles are there as time-savers and if so many seem to need to ease off on the cooking... that's time lost.
    Thoughts? Is there someting in this, or are people not seeing the goodness in the Z output?

  • @chadkelley

    I have the Canon EOS R and I use it for both video and photos. I know there are some limitations to this camera, but I primarily shoot in 1080p and Canon's Full HD looks better and more cinematic than any of these other cameras. Canon's log profiles are also much better than these cameras and when you use an external recorder like the "Atomos Ninja V" you get true 10-Bit 4:2:2 and it looks amazing! Also, as Jared pointed out, the huge catalog of compatible EF glass from not only Canon but, Sigma too is such a huge benefit! Obviously, most of the decisions come down to personal preference and I was so displeased with the way my Sony footage looked, I made the leap and gamble into the Canon R world and I am glad that I did! :)

    You mentioned (in the Nikon reviews) that the Nikon S-Line lenses seem plasticky.
    The button placement on the Z6 is ideal but ultimately you are investing in the glass and the RF glass seems to be more intriguing than that of the Nikon at the present moment.
    Not to mention that the RF system seems to also work best when used with adapted lenses.

      @jtes1442 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lenses may seem more "plasticky", but they pair well to save weight and weather resistance for the Z system. In case you prefer metal lenses just remember that they are usually (not always) susceptible to dents and scratches. RF glass is incredible and sound sexy (1.2), but are they practical for you? All depends on your needs and the depth of your pockets.
