6R80 Lead Frame Replacement

- The 6R80 is a solid transmission, and better than the 10R80 in almost every way. But like everything, it has it's Achillies heel. The Molded Leadframe. This plastic harness combines multiple sensors and is notoriously problematic. You may run into issues with shift performance (namely a sudden and often violent downshift), or in this case, no PRNDL indicator on the dash, causing the vehicle to have a no-start concern. I've been doing this job for over 5 years and have never had to overhaul the 6R80 transmission- only replace the leadframe when it goes out. Since these are no longer covered by warranty, you may consider doing this job yourself if you are mechanically inclined. I rank it a 4/10 on the difficulty scale. Not hard to do, just messy. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments section.
Regardless of proper etiquette, I recommend opening your parts box to check everything is correct and not damaged BEFORE starting anything.
Thanks You
Question I replaced my lead frame because it pulled a code for speed out put sensor i think it was code p0702 on my 2011 ford f150 4x4 5.0 6r80 automatic transmission it drove before i replaced the lead frame but now when i put it in D or R no movement so do i need a scan tool to relearn, recalibrate or reprogrammed it with a scan tool?
If the selector on the dash is indicating the right gear when you move the shifter, then it is likely just low on fluid. Remember, it has to be running and the transmission needs to be up to temperature when you check the fluid level. No recalibration required on these transmissions.
Thank you... I thought I might have done something wrong but I'll put more fluid in it, I just put in the same amount that came out because I didn't want to over fill it hopefully that works.
So I figured out why my transmission is not wanting to roll when put into gear because the valve body doesn't have enough fluid inside is there a way to refill the valve body through the transmission cooler line?
@@Lester-d2i There is, but you would need an adapter. The simplest way is through the dipstick hole.
My harness was on there so tight and brittle, barely tried to turn the lever and it snapped 🎉
Update, the o ring was just holding it together really good. I ended up pulling down the little white plastic tab and GENTLY pry out the whole tab with the wiring harness. Basically slip the whole step of turning the harness out of the little plastic housing
@@pdg1974 Yeah, the plastic can get quite brittle over the years. Glad you got it out in the end!
@@UncleDon226pretty sure I followed all the steps correctly now it doesn’t want to drive.. maybe not enough fluid? Not really sure it will rev up a little then the rpm’s will hang there for a second and then drop. Reads no codes
@@pdg1974 Low fluid can do that. Remember it has to be running in park when you check the fluid level. Does the indicator on the dash change when selecting different gears?
@@UncleDon226 it was low fluid, just pumped it in til it was full lol
What year Ford transmissions are you working on.?
I dont remember the exact year of this one. Maybe 2013 or 2015
I replaced my my leadframe and valve body. Now it won't move. Shows I'm in D or R but rpms go up but no movement
I would double check the fluid level. Remember it needs to be running when doing that. It may look full when it's off, but once it starts, the fluid level drops considerably. My guess is there isnt enough fluid to apply the clutches. Either that, or one of the seals fell out when reinstalling the main control and all the fluid is flowing back into the pan, rather than going to the clutches.
Thank you for feedback. Gotta take it apart again to check. But to move it, have to put it in neutral. If its not connected to slide pin. Would it even go in neutral?
@@RickWardrip It would, the lever on the side of the transmission case remains connected to the parking pawl the whole time, so you can still move it in neutral with the valve body removed. The fact that it shows you are selecting park and reverse on the display means everything is connected correctly, but fluid is not applying clutches. I mentioned in the video that there are a couple seals that like to fall out in the process, so if the fluid level is correct, my guess is one of those. Was it driving before the repair?
@@jaym7369 Now that's just poor etiquette
