I love to explore rural Philippines, so on my road trip all around Cebu island I also had to drive trough the rural areas in northern Cebu.

Great to see areas like where you are in the northern-most part of Cebu already have most-deserved concreted streets.
If/when you traveled in rice-producing areas (Southern Tagalog, Central Luzon for example), you would see rice being dried on the streets as well; you might encounter fisherfolk (seaside) communities in Cebu and the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao that also dry fish, but they'd be in more remote villages away from beaches for swimming ü True, those are fighting cocks, prized and well-cared for by their owner/s because they bring in the money.
You quite got that correct-cock fights ("derby") are attended not only by those from neighboring villages but farther, depending on how big it is and the prize money.
Omg, you found yourself in a really remote part of the island, a "sitio," smaller than a Barangay-you might as well have tracked and pinned it on Google Maps ü Check your fuel, though.

Rural areas: Ceby/Visayas is mostly safe to travel; some parts of Mindanao [may] need more caution. Just the same, you too, stay healthy, stay safe ü

Hello Ken. The kid that grabbed your hand to touch his forehead while you were looking at the dried coconuts, we call that gesture "Mano". We do that while saying "Mano po". We do that especially children as a sign of respect to older people. It is part of the Filipino culture.

They burn the dry leaves in the late afternoon to reduce mosquitos and also good for fruit trees to get rid of other insect eating fruits..

That kid is so respectful for doing "Mano or bless " for someone older he didn't know.. such a good boy , here in the Ph we teach our kids to do "Mano" or sometimes we call it bless to older people that is coming like to their parents ,grandparents or uncle and aunt or even someone that is not family related to them as long as they are elder people, that is a sign of respect.

Its a sign of respect generally to elders / or even younger but you respect , likewise giving your hand to someone who took your hand to his forehead is a sign your giving him a blessing .

Good Day Ken. You may visit Bantayan Island. It is very near to your present location. By the way, I saw a kid get your hand and place it on his head. We call that in Tagalog "Pagmamano" ,in Bisaya "Pangamen". It is our tradition to show respect to older people.

Ken those chickens you saw in the backyard were fighting roosters. The triangle shape or the small hut beside it are their houses.

Mano or amen in bisaya
Malapascua Island known for Thresher Shark is a known tourist diving destination and Bantayan Island because of its white sand beach and prestine water. These 2 are the tourist destinations in the northern part of Cebu.
@ Ken Abroad: the place, where they asked you for 10 Peso is Maya, from where you can take a boat to beautiful Malapascua Island, which you shouldn't miss. It is like Boracay many years ago, but now already also touristy.
Hello, Ken! I think the burning you saw is for mosquitos. Usually, in provinces, they burn grass and dried leaves to make the mosquitos away, they don't like smoke, as we are told. That is why they do it every afternoon because a lot of mosquitos come during the evening.

I normally view your trip log on TV. Got to use my laptop to subscribed. Kudos for being respectful and nice to everyone that you meet. Going to rural places is also an eyeopener for me. Using motorcycle gives you more freedom to your travel. Be careful if you have to do inland travels in Mindanao. Get in touch with local government offices to know which places are safe to go. Bantayan Island is the known tourist spot of Northern Cebu.

We haven’t visited Bantayan and Malapascua but we have friends who live in Cebu and showed their holidays in Bantayan Island and Malapascua. They highly recommend those places. Please try to visit Davao too it’s nice there including the chocolate hills in Bohol. Enjoy your stay in Pinas and stay safe always.

Anyhow since you are there, you might want to cross to bantayan island. It has nice beaches there if you want to go for a dip. Malapascua and kinatarcan are nice too.

These coconuts being dried are called copra and they are being sold which in turn will be made into variety of products such as soap, cooking oil, etc.

Hi Ken, @7:21 is the straditional sign of respect to visitors and elders. It feels great to have that kind of respect. Usually eleders who receive that goodngesture touches the head of the child as a gesture of God bless you or blessed child.

Hi Ken! As far as I know, what happens in chicken fights is that they fight it 1 vs 1. But before that, they let their chicken wear something called "Tare"(like a very sharp sword) in they feet. And the last standing chicken in the battle wins. Good luck in your travels here in Philippines, stay safe and enjoy.

We called chicken fight as "SABONG".
Ken, it is okay for you to see cockfights which happens every Sundays and special holidays here in the Philippines. You can also video the cockfight but there is going to be many spectators (bettors)inside the arena.

They would love you for it Ken haha. But dont do it when meeting an elder stranger in public it might be weird just do it if you get invited to a home and you see elders. Also i think the origin of that is when you kiss the pope’s ring from when we were a spanish colony altho i never really looked how true that is
It's a lot of fun watching you learn all the things about the Philippines that are so common to me and I'll tell you Google Maps ain't gonna show you everywhere they definitely haven't mapped every dirt road in the philippi.
Ya your right, that place where you stop and got the areal view of the land is perfectly beautiful and peaceful.
20 years ago when I lived there the road to Maya was a torture track. No RORO wharf, you had to walk out to the pump boats or get a small boat to take you out to them. Lots of changes. They burn rubbish every day around dusk, usually. It is interesting to watch you discover stuff I took for granted. We'll be back Xmas 2024 to visit wife's family in Calape so watching your videos has been magic.

I used to live in Cebu Islands in Cogon, Pardo went school during grade school. That was way back in 1981. I learned to Freedive in Cebu after watching Badjaos dived for One Peso coin in the deep. It was awesome and i still love Cebu. You should attend Bayle a night dance but you have to pay to dance.

Hey Ken,North Cebu looks very like North Europe,Thailand has 711 and Philippines has Sari-Sari stores,in UK we call motorbike sidecar,we call the guys who collect the refuse "bin men".
There's also a lot of 711 in Philippines but situated in the cities not the village side
I hope you've noticed by now how good people in cebu can speak english. Even kids in rural areas speak english more than tagalog. 😊
Trivia: The one you noticed they burning something during the end of the day or evening, it's part of some culture here in Asia. They believed by creating smoke before dark would chase away or would negate bad things or creatures from that day and also during the evening. Somehow to deflect unwanted negativities that day. Also to chase away insects that might bite or enter in bed or in the house, to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
It saddens me, the idea of burning or making smoke everyday because it really destroys environment not to mention the pollution it creates in the air and would be stuck during the night.
By the way, thanks for going around Cebu. You didn't just stick to some mostly touristy place but you also really explored those unexpectedly aesthetic place.
