Whenever I mention the word ZOO, people tend to freak out because they automatically think animals are being mistreated. While this may be the case for some zoos in the world, there are several others I've visited who are working hard to protect & conserve animals and our ecosystems.
Yesterday, I visited the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens in Florida, where I was able to meet with Uno -- a blind panther that they rescued on the street and have taken under their wing. Without their efforts, Uno would not be alive, and the vulnerable species of the Florida Panther would have one less member (there are about ~200 living today).

It is not fair, that someone spent his entire life in cage.they can't speak, they can't fight for their rights.but we should have to understand that they also have right to live freely, in their natural habitat.
You have mentioned 4-5 names of zoos where animals get treatment, but i can give you 100's of names of zoo where animals are prisioners and used to as entertainment.
Don't you think we are decreasing their natural habitat area on the name of development also? Very shameful.
So it is wrong to change mindset of people about Zoos by showing only 5% Zoos who provide medical care, see those 95% Zoos which do not think about animals right "to live free in natural habitat."

I've driven past this zoo several times because my grandmother lives about a block away from it. I'd like to visit it one day.
I am against zoos but for the majority of zoos don't treat there animals well or don't feed them as much as needed. Santuaries for animals are okay but depends on treatment. I also think we need to push about getting the tigers in Thailand out of that horrible conditions. Plus free the orcas.

You should check out London Zoo. They do a lot of conservation work. I think even David Attenborough has worked with them :-). P.s if you are ever in London it is in a great area to explore!
Depends on the practices.
In their natural habitats, most live fine, but zoos can rescue and make habitats for animals similar enough that they can survive and live better if they were in poor conditions. They can treat speciality animals for health of them and enjoyment too.

I’m now taking biology for conservation. It has been my dream to be working on helping animals, though my first thought was a vet, until I was taught conservation.

In the Zoo of Las Delicias, in Maracay a city 2 hours west of the capital Caracas there is a Zoo, there was an Indian Elephant there for as long as I remember from the 1960's. This elephant was in a small area, half the size of a basketball court, his eyes looked like he knew it was his fate to be imprisoned for ever. Every body loved the elephant and I am sure the elephant loved the children who went to see him. When the Venezuelan famine started in 2015, food was so expensive that the zoo workers nor the zoo had enough money to buy food for the animals, many of the animals turned skinny and many more died. It was such a sad story when I read that the beloved elephant of Las Delicias Zoo had died for not being fed.

For me, it’s how good you make it, not all zoos are bad. Especially the ones that treat animals right or animals in danger. I’m against bad zoos, but for zoos that are well.

That is a good insight into what a zoo is. I think everything is going to be good as you make it. You can get good zoos and bad ones. Just like everything. You can get a good car and a bad car. Totally not because many of zoo's in the world have very good and careing facilities for then but without these zoo's others are not like that and they are not have enough money to provide them a good,safe, health long life 😭😭

Very nice zoo. People should look after endangered animals and all the animals. People should realise that they shouldn't harm the animals for entertainment purposes, destroy the animals habitiat for housing, and etc. Naples zoo is amazing in taking care of the animals which are endangered and all the other animals also. I am hoping that very soon that all of the zoos in thr world can take care of all of the animals in the world instead of showing cruelty to animals to perform tricks to entertain the humans.

Thank you, I didn't support zoos but now I see differently. Of course, it's not easy to believe every species in a zoo is benefitting from being there but maybe there's some educational benefit. I don't like London zoo, I dont feel people are made to feel that those animals shouldn't be there or much education happens there.

Zoos are alright if the animals have alot of space (free space) to roam around, and get enough food and drink etc. Though things like dolphin/orca shows are really evil and terrible.

It's a catch 22. I hate zoos because we put living things in cages for our own entertainment. Because we (for the most part) consider ourselves to superior and dominant species. But also zoos are great for extinct animals like white tigers and white rhinos. I have zoos but I understand them.
The thing is humans are the superior and dominant species. We still should be treating them with utmost respect and care but are elephants or dogs the reason civilization has advanced so much throughout the Earth’s lifetime or was it humans?
@@joeyjerry1586 that's very true. If it wasn't for us. White tigers etc would be completely gone but I agree, we should be treating animals respectfully. We'll partly, an elephant and dog would still kill you though. They're domesticated to a limit but they'll always be wild.

The original idea of Zoos is to educate populations about wild life and preserve endangered animals. But what actually happens is animals being mistreated and some animals like Northern black Rhino were still lost in modern times so clearly Zoos are not doing this job well either.
