very educational video for anyone considering the career and I think especially for anyone who doesn't like the idea of zoos and needs to see how hard these people work for the sake of the animals!
It’s not about the people that work at a zoo. It’s about the animals, if they really wanna protect them, work where they still live and protect their environment. Zoos are not an option!
As someome who dislikes the idea of zoos I don't blame these people at all. I believe them that they love "their" animals and don't want to harm them. But you can't change the fact that zoos are prisons for animal. Not a single animal kept in a zoo went there voluntarily. And that is the problem with zoos, not the staff.

Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY is my hometown favorite. Currently, ANOKI is the lone polar bear - her Mom , Aurora, and Dad, Yukon, were here . Obviously no polar bears. Great video! Thank you for sharing.

Unlike the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld is still primarily an entertainment company. They've gotten a lot better, but I still wouldn't support SeaWorld. My friend who works there says it's much worse than you think

Been going to the Zoo & Safari Park since before I could walk (we don't need to talk about just how long that's been), and it's great to see how it has evolved over the years (and continues to!). Great job, this was a lot of fun to watch!
What a stunning zoo ❤ zoos are so important for not only research but also inspiring passion and empathy etc in humans which furthers conservation funding ❤
The sad reality is that every single living creature on this planet including us are all competing for the same resources since time began. Zoos, whether you hate them or not are going to be the only places to see some animals that once existed, and they do play a part in ensuring that the wildlife have chance to live. Cool video 👍
Two points about that: 1) Does the possible or even certain extinction of a species as a hole (which cannot suffer) justify the obviously appearent suffering of individual animals (which are proven to can suffer)? 2) The part Zoos play in the preservation of animal species is minimal at best. In Germany our parliament was asked this by one of the opposing parties. The ratio of animals set free to animals captured (not rescued) was 150 to over 800 and I highly doubt these numbers to be better outside of europe.
@@robinweyand5327 Would you rather the animals just die then? Most of them can't be released back into the wild where they'll die. If they aren't born in the wild and taught by mom, they aren't going to survive in the wild. The wild is a deadly unforgiving place. It's not peaceful or safe. Would you rather the two polar bear siblings who lost their mother at 3 months old have also died not long after their mother did? They wouldn't have died peacefully either. An adult male polar bear would've eaten them alive. You'd rather that happen? Is a 3 month old life cut short by being eaten a more fulfilling life than a 20 year life in a zoo where they'll die of old age?
@@sirus804 I think you don't understand how horrible the life inside captivity is for the animal. A cub beating eaten by an adult, as gruesome as it sounds, is nature. A 20 year life in a prison is nothing an animal would ever want if they had a choice. And yes the zoos try to entertain the animals, but you can tell simply by watching the animals behaviour, that they are mentally ill because of the zoos.
@@sirus804 And you are right that most of the animals can't be released back into the wild where they will die. But then stop breeding them, just to entertain humans.
@@robinweyand5327 well , zoos have come a long way in keeping animals, when I was a kid the zoo near me had tigers and lions in concrete enclosures, now it’s more natural. The truth is , whenever animals and humans interact, there is always a change in behaviour by both, sometimes good and sometimes not. Some wildlife have adapted very well to human activity, you should see the bush turkeys here in Sydney, they are all over the shop as for breeding, zoos are places that are able to breed animals that are at risk at extinction. Even if the percentage is low, but it’s better than nothing. Do wildlife belong in the wild , absolutely they do, no matter how one looks at it, there are no easy solutions or quick fixes, in most countries there are a whole host of issues which impact wildlife by humans in a negative way. There things being done to combat the poaching and other environmental problems, but it’s a battle that is a constant one
Gary you are amazing. Once in northern Canada I saw a moose much closer than I would prefer. I truly believe my skin froze and I thought I had kissed my ass goodby. My brother while kayaking in Hawaii saw a hammerhead underneath his kayak and he yelled like a little gril and shat himself. Had it lasted a little longer he would have gotten up and fallen in the water. We are not very much in tune with the fauna. We are city folks for sure. You are brave. I'm glad you didn't eat any of the animal food or any of the animals.
I went to the San Diego Zoo with my dad many years ago. The last time I’ve been in a zoo. It is definitely the best zoo in the world. Nice video and you’re killing it with this channel and Garett eats. Looking forward to what’s next.
I had a buddy who worked at the San Diego zoo for years and he took us back stage at the Polar Bear exhibit and had the male stand up just a few feet away from us and my heart literally stopped in terror at the size of this alpha predator standing 12 feet high with his paws raised. He stated that they would eat him in a second if they had a chance even though he was their primary caretaker at the time. I still have a few friends who are senior caretakers there so always keep an eye out when I’m at the zoo in hopes of getting another behind the scenes adventure. It is a great zoo.
Every zoo should be like this no less. I have no hate for zoos that are run properly, they benefit animals and research in so many ways and provide so much happiness towards animals in need and guests.
the thing about zoos is that people dont understand that zoo animals could never survive in the wild.... so its either zoos or byebye to weaker or less "wild" animals. I know thats how nature is supposed to work but as long as they are in good shape both physically and mentally its a plus for us to study them and have the pleasure to be so close to that animal without any side being harmed
This is a great piece! Especially awesome seeing Shaba and Sundzu. I spent so much time visiting with both of them at the Reid Park zoo in Tucson! Oh how I wish I could go back in time and go to school to do this. I can’t wait to volunteer at our zoo in the future 💜
I’m actually planning to work at their Safari Park! So I’m very glad to see it people begin to appreciate the San Diego Zoo (and it’s Safari Park counterpart) for its beauty!
I’ve been to the San Diego zoo and it was huge , beautiful and I enjoyed it. I wish more zoos were large like sanctuaries so the animals could stretch out and not feel trapped The big cats at Sam Diego were pacing when I went, which means stress 😢
While on one hand it is hard to see animals in cages or enclosures many are there because if left in the wild they would have died. But on the other I am grateful for zoos like San Diego Zoo for allowing us the opportunity to see and learn about the animals. Those animals are great ambassadors for their breed/species and help educate the public so that the public can learn to help them survive and better yet thrive!

I’d chase blue tongue lizards in backyards, I’ve had bin chickens nick rubbish from my bins, and I’ve slept in tents where wombats would be wandering around at night. Great video to educate future generations. It’s heartbreaking to hear that most animal species are down 70% because of us humans. People always want to argue about how zoos are horrible when we humans are the reasons why they ended up in zoos. Let’s just stop to think that maybe in the future all animals may end up in zoos and secluded due to human overpopulation.
if humans did not exist, there would be zero zoos and zero animals in captivity. This video is actually promoting and glorifying zoos for entertainment. humans are the issue here and i wish these "youtubers" would showcase the truth instead of appealing to the sheep masses.

The Polar Bears look really skinny & the habitat is really small for a polar bear (or maybe it looks a bit small in the video), but the idea with fish hunting is great.
@@innocentdevil4979 i heard that my guy, but still considering the environment they’re in I’m pretty sure that they’re a bit too skinny, but like I said maybe it looks that way in the video, so you should maybe pay more attention in reading correctly
If you look at polar bears in the wild they are lean…they have a layer of fat which helps them protect from the cold beneath which is solid muscle. They travel on land or in the ocean hundreds of miles. Polar bears in captivity don’t have access to that kind of exercise so their weight can only be managed by diet. These bears look very healthy…their size is much like that of wild bears. Too many bears in captivity are overweight.
If you still believe zoos are good, I would advise you to read this comment. I feel like people have never seen a wildlife documentary. Zoos are bad. There is a massive difference between a lion in the wild and one in the zoo. It is amazing to see how they hunt in the wild, how their shoulders move, how their eyes are focused on the target, how they hunt and live, take care of their pups and their other pack members. You don't see that in zoos because animals in zoos are abused. I am not saying zoo keepers do not love their animals. Quite the opposite. But they are not educated enough or simply ignore the truth. Zoos are based on four pillars: Relaxation, Education, Conservation, and Research. I will be destroying every single one of these in this comment. Relaxation: This might be true for some people, even though I don't know where you get the relaxation from seeing mentally ill animals. However, these animals are not relaxed. Once again, we are putting our rights before animal rights. Education: The "Evaluating Children's Conservation Biology Learning at the Zoo-" Study shows that 62% of the 2.800 observed children learned either nothing or wrong information. There are many ways to learn about wild animals, like documentaries, articles, etc. You learn so much by watching a documentary because you see how these animals act in their natural environment. The only thing that zoos teach people is how to NOT treat animals. For example SeaWorld: They often say orcas live up to 30 years which is bullshit. Females can live up to 60 years or more in the wild. One of the main problems of parents is that they do not put enough effort into learning about animals to teach their children. I believe the majority of parents are too lazy to teach their children and go to zoos for that reason. Why do you not teach children to appreciate local animals? Why does your child need to see lions? Bees are just as interesting, and you just have to walk into a field to observe bees. But no, it has to be an exotic animal. That's speciesism. That's another thing: "My child needs to see these animals in person. Otherwise, they are not interesting to them." Bullshit. Ever heard of dinosaurs? Yeah, exactly. Conservation: Conversation happens locally. Zoos make a ridiculous amount of money, and if they donate to organizations, it is not enough. It's barely anything. 75% of animals are abused in the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. We could still save habits and animals if people would do something instead of going to zoos. Most fish in aquariums are wild-caught. Zoos are the ones harming the habitats. Many organizations help animals in their natural environment and are successful. They just need money. There are so many ways to protect the animals and the environment, but most people are just too lazy to change their behavior. Also, explain this: It's a little ironic to treat animals so "greatly" in zoos and then sell non-vegan products. That's speciesism level 100%. The few species that have been saved because of zoos are great, of course. But that does not justify the suffering of thousands of animals every day. Most of these zoo animals will never be released in the wild. Again: Conservation happens locally. Research: Do I even need to talk about this? It's bullshit to observe people in a prison and then say: "Yeah, that is how all humans act." That is exactly what it's like to observe an animal in captivity and say: "Yeah, that's how they act."
Lots of zoos are some of the leading helpers in conservation. What about those animals who are extinct in the wild? Without zoos they’d be completely gone. As well as that, if you watch the video, many animals brought into zoos are animals that would die in the wild. Lots of education happens in zoos as well. Most of those numbers are inflated because of zoos that aren’t good, which sadly is a lot of zoos. But if you only look at them, you won’t see how good some zoos are for animals that will completely die out if unattended because of things like disease and poachers.
I work at a zoo and if animals aren't kept at zoo you might never see them. Only 400 Samaritan tigers in 🎉the wild. Palm oil is destroying them by taking their land and food disappears.
As much as I love how much these zookeepers care for their animals, i hate seeing animals like Polar bears that roam hundreds of miles in the cold being in a pen in warm San Diego. Same with Elephants
they litelarly said their mother died when they were young so the scientists tracking here saved the cubs and they had to be raised in captivity which means they cant go to the wild because they dont have the knowledge of survival, also they said that the bears can live easily in san diego even though its hotter by adjusting diet and making them build up less fat which heats them in the wild also they have cooling systems for water and enclosure
Good zoos are essential in order to: Breed endangered animals from, for instance, war torn countries where left in place they would rapidly become extinct. Allow people to come into contact with animals so that they develop empathy for them. Study animals up close in order to help protect them in the wild. I could go on and on….

Just went there with my daughters on Monday! What a fun place! Fun to watch this as I was just there and saw all these animals 48 hrs ago! Good times
This was incredible. I can't believe how you caught the scale of how big polar bears are. Absolutely wild. Love this so much
What a FUN video Gareth. Thanks so much 4 sharing it. Cheers !! 😎😎
G- this is amazing video! Luv the polar bear slow mo shot when they dove in for the fish!
Really liking your series! 😊
very educational video for anyone considering the career and I think especially for anyone who doesn't like the idea of zoos and needs to see how hard these people work for the sake of the animals!
Unfortunately the love of the zookeeper's cannot make up for the conditions many animals have to live in
@@Shoazothey we’re literally born there 😂 or rescued as a baby therefore they can’t survive in the wild.

Hands down best pole bear scene ever! Made me appreciate them a whole lot more
Wow 🤩 This episode was amazing! I was smiling ear to ear the whole time. 😄 😁😃😀

Hello Gareth , Thanks for this interesting and educational video about the famous San Diego Zoo , to be honest I have never been to the San Diego Zoo , Now I'm looking forward to go !. Cool Video , Thanks !🏆🥇
You should definitely go!
@@LMat_MX Thanks !👍
Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY is my hometown favorite. Currently, ANOKI is the lone polar bear - her Mom , Aurora, and Dad, Yukon, were here . ANOKI went to another zoo, and finally returned "home"! Polar bears are my favorite animals to watch for hours. Here in W Palm Beach, there is Lion Country Safari - a drive thru plus a walking area. Obviously no polar bears. Great video! Thank you for sharing.
My hometown Zoo as well 😊 I actually did a summer camp there when I was growing up! haha
Don’t want to send fish into shock before they become snacks😂
As a keeper this! This is what the profession is about caring about these animals welfare and helping their conservation
Omgoodness, seriously do a day in the life of a Porto's bakery baker in Los Angeles!!!! It's our favorite place, they work incredibly hard!
Bro you literally asked all the questions I was thinking in my head. I just got back from Seaworld today my first time in SD , and I couldn’t help but think how far they’ve come since Blackfish documentary
Unlike the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld is still primarily an entertainment company. They've gotten a lot better, but I still wouldn't support SeaWorld. My friend who works there says it's much worse than you think
Your video changed my perspective on zoos. Thank you for sharing. Loving this new series. ❤
So glad you changed your perspective! So many are uneducated on zoos and follow all those uneducated stereotypes!
@@zooempire4390nobody educated on zoo business would be pro zoo. look at how sea world is stalking orcas that beach. they can just go back to see but sea world would 'save' them 😂

Been to the san diego zoo twice, it is incredible and huge, you can really see the quality of care that goes into the animals care. Its my absolute biggest dream to work at one, hopefully someday I will.
Great work, man! I really like the direction you're taking things.
I learned alot about wildlife in this video so thanks to you and the experts that put it together :) keep doing you
Watching polar bears is great for me, they are my spirit animal. They love the cold, just like me :)
I'm from the Midwest and im surprised that we don't keep polar bears there because for 4-6 months out of the year, its basically a frozen tundra.
Because you dont keep fricken polar bears anywhere…..
San Diego Zoo is so amazing. I'm really glad you got to live your dream
Such a fantastic opportunity to get behind the scene and participate in caring for the animals. Love the stories of how the employees got to there.
The grandkids are going to love this one !
This was phenomenal, thank you
Been going to the Zoo & Safari Park since before I could walk (we don't need to talk about just how long that's been), and it's great to see how it has evolved over the years (and continues to!). Great job, this was a lot of fun to watch!
Amazing. Thank you for all you do Gareth ❤
This was great, thanks for sharing.
One of the best videos on youtube! Thank you for sharing. Also, these animals eat and live better than 95% of humans.
As a kid that wants to be a zookeeper, I would say San Diego zoo is a good job to have.
Two points about that:
1) Does the possible or even certain extinction of a species as a hole (which cannot suffer) justify the obviously appearent suffering of individual animals (which are proven to can suffer)?
That was wonderful content ❤❤❤❤🎉
Gary you are amazing. Once in northern Canada I saw a moose much closer than I would prefer. I truly believe my skin froze and I thought I had kissed my ass goodby. My brother while kayaking in Hawaii saw a hammerhead underneath his kayak and he yelled like a little gril and shat himself. Had it lasted a little longer he would have gotten up and fallen in the water. We are not very much in tune with the fauna. We are city folks for sure. You are brave. I'm glad you didn't eat any of the animal food or any of the animals.
To be honest are those experiences in the wild not much more impressive and breathtaking then any visit in a zoo?
@@linusreimschuessel I never shat myself in the Zoo. Perhaps it is a POV.
A hammerhead shark has never once killed a person, not even the 20 ft long great hammerhead
This is easily one of the best videos I have seen on youtube
I went to the San Diego Zoo with my dad many years ago. The last time I’ve been in a zoo. It is definitely the best zoo in the world. Nice video and you’re killing it with this channel and Garett eats. Looking forward to what’s next.
Great to see that all the polar bears are literally rescues!
Wow amazing videos. Abosulutly stunning love animals
Yo! I met you at the zoo! I’m a janitor at the zoo and I remember you!
This was genuinely awesome to watch. Thank you for sharing.
the thing about zoos is that people dont understand that zoo animals could never survive in the wild.... so its either zoos or byebye to weaker or less "wild" animals. I know thats how nature is supposed to work but as long as they are in good shape both physically and mentally its a plus for us to study them and have the pleasure to be so close to that animal without any side being harmed
I absolutely loved and enjoyed this video!!! Thank you!
This is a great piece! Especially awesome seeing Shaba and Sundzu. I spent so much time visiting with both of them at the Reid Park zoo in Tucson! Oh how I wish I could go back in time and go to school to do this. I can’t wait to volunteer at our zoo in the future 💜
This is 😍 amazing. The thought of giving the animals the choice of staying or leaving is wow
There really should be a Zookeeper's Union. It's a very specialized Profession.
I’m actually planning to work at their Safari Park! So I’m very glad to see it people begin to appreciate the San Diego Zoo (and it’s Safari Park counterpart) for its beauty!
I’ve been to the San Diego zoo and it was huge , beautiful and I enjoyed it.
I wish more zoos were large like sanctuaries so the animals could stretch out and not feel trapped
The big cats at Sam Diego were pacing when I went, which means stress 😢
pacing doesnt mean only stress, but its definitely a possibility.
they should not be captive. they are wild.@@lizzymandile2022
youre right they shouldnt be there. Zoos are absolutely disgusting
dude do more research
Big cats pacing can mean a lot of things. A lot of time they are pacing the outskirts of their territory which they do in the wild.
“Why do you want to move to San Diego?”
Me: working at the San Diego zoo
i love their dedication and passion for their animals’ wellbeing
The zoo looks beautiful and natural I like it 👍
I absolutely loved this. Thank you for sharing. I love polar bears 🐻❄️ so beautiful. And, I’m glad to see behind the scene a lot goes into it more than, I thought.

Thanks for showing us a slice of what zoo keepers and workers due to keep the animal fed. It looks like a lot of hard work. I've been to that Zoo years ago and it was interesting and fun. I have been to other Zoo's and Sea World. I have mixed feelings about them being in captivity for our enjoyment.
Having mixed feelings about it is a great start! Atleast you think about it and don't just go to zoos for enjoyment.

Talk about a depressing thumbnail
Like they said bitter sweet, sober of these animals are being poached to extinction and pushed out of their homes by humans with money.
Why do you think there are no bears in the wild in California anymore? Because they eradicated them to build homes.

Dude I grew up in Australia, and I’ve loved animals since I was a kid. I’d chase blue tongue lizards in backyards, I’ve had bin chickens nick rubbish from my bins, and I’ve slept in tents where wombats would be wandering around at night. Seeing any animal was always the coolest feeling, and I was always all for it
Great video to educate future generations.
Animals population cut by 70%in 50 years has alot to do with poaching its sad to know some animals will become extinct 😢
Thanks Gareth enjoyable seeing the beautiful creatures
Yes finally a video about the best prison for animals
13:05 she is doing a good thing. The fact she doesn’t want to look at the camera is so sad. YOU GO GIRL. You should be proud of taking care of these animals. They literally need you, and they would have un alived without you and your team.
The Polar Bears look really skinny & the habitat is really small for a polar bear (or maybe it looks a bit small in the video), but the idea with fish hunting is great.
yeah they are very skinny. unfortunate
they explained why they are skinny in the video maybe you should pay attention
@@Leadr99Please educate yourself before you keep commenting ridiculous theories
This video is so good. Thanks for sharing
Depressing. The simple fact that they find no problems keeping polar bears in California says a lot about this place.
Beautiful ❤love how they treated the animals
It's bullshit to observe people in a prison and then say: "Yeah, that is how all humans act."
That is exactly what it's like to observe an animal in captivity and say: "Yeah, that's how they act."
That was absolutely amazing!!!
Sad to see those animals stuck in some kind of confinement.
In the wild they are one of the most majestic animals you can find
They are captive bred and plus they don’t know so it’s not that bad so more research plz🙏
I work at a zoo and if animals aren't kept at zoo you might never see them. Only 400 Samaritan tigers in 🎉the wild. Palm oil is destroying them by taking their land and food disappears.
The polar bears are soooo cute😍
As much as I love how much these zookeepers care for their animals, i hate seeing animals like Polar bears that roam hundreds of miles in the cold being in a pen in warm San Diego. Same with Elephants
they litelarly said their mother died when they were young so the scientists tracking here saved the cubs and they had to be raised in captivity which means they cant go to the wild because they dont have the knowledge of survival, also they said that the bears can live easily in san diego even though its hotter by adjusting diet and making them build up less fat which heats them in the wild also they have cooling systems for water and enclosure
Great video! 🐢
Good zoos are essential in order to:
Breed endangered animals from, for instance, war torn countries where left in place they would rapidly become extinct.
Allow people to come into contact with animals so that they develop empathy for them.
Study animals up close in order to help protect them in the wild.
I could go on and on….
thank you.
