    Good list.
    Both the Cincinnati and Columbus Zoo's in Ohio are top notch. The man who put the San Diego Zoo on the map, zoologically speaking, came back to his hometown of Columbus to do the same.
    And Cincinnati's Zoo has long been known as one of the best in North America often considered #2 to San Diego. Interestingly, the Cincinnati Zoo is also known as the Zoo of Love as they have had decades of incredible success breeding animals that other zoos have not been able to do successfully.

    funny thing is that Amsterdam actually is really criticized in the Netherlands for having not enough space for their animals.

    But Where is Pairi Daiza, one of the most beautifull zoos in the world and hands down the best in europe

    Artis Zoo is an amazing institution but I do not believe it is the best in the Netherlands. Rotterdam Zoo or Burger's zoo are much better. The same can be said about Germany's Leipzig zoo and Switzerland's Zurich Zoo. So I wonder what is really the metrics being used here. But nice video.

    The picture of the entrance and the Orangutans climbing on the rope above a guest path is from the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC, not the National Zoological Gardens. Totally different places in the world but yes similar name. The O-Line is the name for the rope crossing for the Orangutans. It’s unbelievable to see in person

    A zoo should not be judged on its superficial attractions for visitors and on the numbers of animals and species of animals exhibited but by its standards of animal welfare, conservation, research and education. These are the only bases on which existence of any zoo can be justified in the 21st century. I would like to have heard more about this.

    • @quiotu
      @quiotu ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is why I really like Henry Doorly Zoo. Over the decades I've watched it transform from an atypical old zoo with nothing but cages and animals packed in like sardines, to a zoo mostly about conservation and education, every cage replaced with large natural habitats and enrichment being a big factor. Less animals, more space, more what are called animal encounters when keepers check and enrich the animals there. You're less likely to see the animals up close, but it should be praised when a zoo is more about animal welfare than visitor experience.

    To be Truthful, I’m an American & I know one of the best Zoos in America that’s Interests me the most in my taste. 7:00 This one however is new to me. I’ll take that as an Okay for my taste, for the moment. But my most favorite best Zoos in the United States of America are The Miami Zoo, The Tampa Zoo, The Miami Zoo, The Bush Gardens in Orlando, The Central Florida, The Cincinnati Zoo, The San Diego Zoo, The Philadelphia Zoo, The Cape May Zoo & Finally The Bronx Zoo. In addition, no doubt that the St. Augustine Alligator Farm is like a Zoo. Disney’s Animal Kingdom at 1st is like a Zoo, but it’s more like an Animal Disney Theme Park. 4:54 Still, this shot of the Chester Zoo with A Boy & A Crocodile reaching out to each other is quite funny. What? False Gharials AKA Tomistomas are more closely related to True Crocodiles than the typical Gharials of India.

    As a Dutch zoo enthousiast I would strong argue to remove Artis Amsterdam from this list. Not that it is an awful zoo but not even close to the Dutch top 5. Instead include burgers zoo Arnhem. It’s the first zoo in the world to house apes in ‘natural’ groups. Had the first ever European safari drive trough park. And was the first zoo in the world to have a tropical dome in the world with free roaming animals. Furthermore they have the best and I believe largest aquarium in Europe. I visited half of the zoos in this list and burgers deserves to be in the top 10 at least. Artis Amsterdam has no place in this list what do ever. 😂

      For a zoo with 138 year old ( oldest that some countries in Europe),wich never had a major/minor intervention,they way he standing now,,since his beginnig with major highways crossing above the zoo,in one of the major interface in Lisbon,but nevertheless when you enter there,its like a miracle,the only sounds you ear its from the Birds,the animals and the Wind.
      Horrible... Why...??? Its one of the oldest zoo's in the world,with the same Architecture since inauguration.
      Ok,they have a cable car for 30 years now,and fast food restaurants.
      Small,when he's inauguration was the biggest in Europe .
      The charme of this zoo has no paralel in Europe.
      But like i Said,some enclosures are very old ( 138 years old), but the zoo himself with all that Shade wherever you go,with those 100 + years old benches,makes the Lisbon Zoo,One of a kind .
      You don't have in Europe a zoo in a capital city with the charme and piece that you have in the Lisbon zoo.
      Do a proper research before saying very foolish things.
      Don't forget one thing when you say its small...when his inauguration it was one of the oldest zoo's in the world .
      You live in a different era. Everything its different nos,man. You live in the age of San Diego zoo,wich its creepy and Deadly as other modern zoos.
      Just take a look at the fabulous huge Orcas aquarium...uauuu what an wonderful death trap For such intelegent animals. It was needed some people to Die,to get to the conclusion that show with 'tamed" orcas was real an the animals were happy .
      And you are talking abaut the dolphins on the Lisbon Zoo. Jesus Christ,man with that you sabotage your case from within.
      Next time think twice before claiming sometinhing that you are not aware off,ok.
      US Zoo's are Killer nachines.

Yes I agree with animal sanctuaries if they rescue abused animals, hurt animals, abandoned animals etc....

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without zoos we would have many, many, many endangered species that would now be extinct and the public would be less educated about and in touch with animals. If you want to criticize inhumane zoos, most people would be with you. There are many that should be shut down. But there are also many, many zoos that do wonderful jobs of keeping animals in excellent, large, diverse areas where they lead rich, full lives, and many zoos that engage with endangered species breeding, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, environmental conservation and much more. Before you go and condemn all zoos, visit some great ones. You’ll change your mind about your blanket statement here.

      @andrewpayne5093 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      1. That last part doesn't make sense (if they rescue abused animals, hurt animals, abandoned animals etc....) where do you think the animals come from in the first place ? They don't just get taken from the wild to be put on display.. they are orphaned, rescued, unable to be released or born in captivity and wouldn't know any survival skills if thrown into the wild.
      2. Most animals born in captivity don't even know what the wild is and won't sit there thinking they'd love to be in the wild instead of sitting in a sanctuary with health care and unlimited food..
      3. What wild is left exactly ? 80% of the world's forests has been cut down and continues to happen each year with higher human population going up and up. Not to mention pollution, poachers ect.. there isn't many places left for them to live safely.
      3. Idk see what's different to people having pets like birds locked in cages and houses ? They are animals too who at one point got taken from the wild and just kept getting bred in captivity. .

    Zoos are prisons for innocent animals. Boycott zoos and aquariums. Support animal sanctuaries instead!

    • @quiotu
      @quiotu ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be fair most zoos in the US are for basically providing shelter for animals that can't be released in the wild. Zoos have changed, trying to pack as many animals in as possible has grown into basically sanctuaries that are more about creating natural habitats and enriching the animals' lives.

    • @MMadesen
      @MMadesen ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And sanctuaries are better why exactly?
      Zoos protect and breed endangered species. The age of pure showcase in small cages is long gone. Even today Zoos are constantly improving.
      Many Zoos even have a wildlife hospital attached and support habitat protection, anti poaching projects and other conservation projects around the world.
      Of course there are still problems, but they are getting less every day.

      Houses and cages are also prisons for Pets!! Ban all pets!!! They all deserve to be set free!!! Fly away pet Birds! Go back into the wild!!!!
      But seriously they aren't even prisons. Most the animals raised in captivity don't even know what the wild is and I'm sure they are loving the free health care and unlimited food daily with no threats of poachers and deforestation.. the ones that are orphaned by poachers or badly injured in the wild wouldn't survive if let got.. just to note, 70% of the world's forests have been cut down and continues to raise, so not really many wild places left...

      @@andrewpayne5093 If you actually believe life is the same for a companion animal as a prisoner in a zoo, you are completely clueless. Besides, IF you actually gave a damn about companion animals, you'd be fighting against breeders who are flooding shelters and rescues with unwanted companion animals who end up getting euthanized.

    I've been to the San Diego zoo and it's wonderful, but *huge.* You can spend all day walking and still only see a fraction of it. You can see much more from the cable car over the park (which will show you just how massive this place is) and the best thing about it is what goes on behind the scenes. It is a refuge for endangered species and has dedicated itself to saving as many as they can for future generations .

    There is a channel ran by a man who had a reptile and animal park in South Africa. It's called Surviving Africa and on the channel he tells stories of things that happened related to the animals. It's really interesting and he seems very nice. He doesn't upload that often but has a lot of videos up already.

    I think the omission of the St Louis Zoo is a travesty. Where I'll give the San Diego Zoo and Bronx Zoo that they may have had some interesting animals and are surely quality Zoos, St Louis is by far a better Zoo being first of all not in San Diego, but also $70 cheaper than it ($70 is the cheapest ticket) and $33 cheaper than the Bronx zoo and in an exponentially cleaner city. Ignoring those considering Busch gardens over the St Louis zoo is tantamount to felony perjury.
