ADHD Test for Children | Does my child have ADHD?

  • If you want to know how to test for ADHD for yourself or your child, you MUST watch this video.
We'll cover how to get an ADHD self assessment or an assessment for your child, what ADHD screening tools people use, and who can diagnose ADHD.
We also cover what ADHD means, what ADHD stands for, and what ADHD looks like as well as common ADHD symptoms.
It's very important to understand ADHD who makes the diagnosis and why you should not take ADHD self tests.
For those of you who don’t know, ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is actually a misleading name because:
    - you don’t have to be hyperactive to have it
    - and people with ADHD don’t have an attention deficit, it’s just that regulating their attention is difficult, which can either make it hard for them to focus on one thing or can make them hyperfocused on one thing
    What does ADHD mean?
ADHD is a medical condition, more specifically a neurodevelopmental disorder.
It is NOT a myth or made-up excuse by parents of “naughty” kids. If you’ve ever had to deal with this, let me know what happened in the comments below!
A person with ADHD has visible differences in brain development and brain activity that affect their attention, emotional regulation, and self-control.
Watch the full video to understand more about what ADHD is, how to take an ADHD test, and how to get your child tested for ADHD.

Back in kindergarten, I was kicking over things and our teacher had to move the other kids out of the room because they thought I was going to hurt someone. I have been experiencing symptoms of adhd since I was young and it is really uncomfortable being hyper, especially being overweight.
I also got detention twice this school year because I procrastinated A LOT and back when I was younger, my mom gave me spankings because of how I misbehaved at school, and I would hide from my mom so she wouldn’t be able to find me and I felt like I couldn’t control when I did these things I just felt frustrated and energized enough to do it.

      My symptoms:
Disorganized- I can’t keep track of ANYTHING a month will pass and my school folder/binder has so much stuff that it’s almost breaking, there’s wrappers and trash in my backpack. I always feel like something is dirty/messy but I can’t clean it cause I get sidetracked
Short attention span- my mom gets frustrated with me cause I can’t hear what she’s saying cause I’m paying attention to something else, I don’t know how I get good grades, I can’t pay attention to save my life, my mind is always on things that I’m interested in. And never on the things that I’m doing
Fidgeting- I am moving 24/7 unless I’m REALLY interested in what I’m doing, it’s all finger tapping, foot tapping, hand flapping, anything but staying still, I have repetitive things that I do over and over and over again
Special interests- I’ve heard somewhere that people with ADD, ADHD, and on the Autistic spectrum have special interests, for me it’s my favorite show, art, rodents, and acting/music, anything other then those things is just uninteresting to me.
Emotional outbursts- my emotions change rapidly, I’m happy for a minute and then the next I’m worried, or I get distracted, I’m fine for a day and then suddenly I feel really sad.
I have all of these on a daily basis

That is so heartbreaking. I am curious, what could your parents have done that would have helped you? My daughter is type 3 and I feel so defeated as a parent because I dont know how to help her. My daughter is in 3rd grade and she still struggles to add/subtract, write sentences as well as has a speech delay. She also has difficulty making friends because she comes off as "weird" to other kids. I just want to protect her but I know she needs to be able to interact socially. I know children with ADHD are not naughty - they are sweet children with a lot of life and have amazing imaginations and creativity! I teach pre-k. It's unbelievable how many parents think their child has add/adhd. Most of the time the child is going through a phase where they are seeking independence or maybe being strong willed. Lots of times the parents don't seem to understand that their child isn't going to just naturally behave or not need to be reprimanded more than once for something. It's a work in progress.

It is absolutely real! I've suffered from most of these symptoms since about seven years old. My dad won't admit it but he has it as well. Now my son faces the similar fate. I understand the fear and loathing.
Diet and exercise helps me immensely. First having coffee in high helped alot. The men in my family are additionally polyglots.
A good nutritionalist helped my step daughter with bi polar disorder.

Im a step parent,i live with a 7 year old boy,
His father gets mad at the mention of adhd, thinking its bad. This is just how a 7 year old acts
He really struggles,he pulls at his shirts, fidgets the entire body at the slight of any uncomfort or confrontation,he starts to hyperventilate too
When spoken to,he will ignore everything you say,and say"yes, but.." And start talking about what he wants, unrelated to what we tell him
He interrupts all conversations, and talks excessively, which is why no one reallys likes playing or hanging around him
But when it comes to expressing emotion,he struggles hard and ends up spazzing out, fidgeting hard
He really really reallly REALLY strughles with listening ,and really really struggles to stat still
Which isnt a problem but its just seems so extreme,i havent seen this kind of behaviour
Can anyone help me out with this?

Now the issues are more pronounced due to Asian schooling methods and academic pressure, she's finally willing to accept that our son's mind doesn't work like his peers. The whole family situation is better and more understanding. He's been given the support he needs at school with teachers who actually care and offer extra classes catered for ADHD and dyslexia. Plus the regular classes are smaller, so the teacher has more time to focus on each student. My son now loves going to school. I'd recommend it if there's something like that available near you.

Our son has ADHD, we cant take him out to eat and grocery shopping is a nightmare lol. We have to hold his hand around streets anywhere near a street, pretty much everywhere. We look for parks with fencing or a hiking parks with trails. He likes to say hi to every person he sees which is so cute and most of the time people respond with a smile and a hello. Sometimes not lol. He does enjoy rough housing (hitting, jumping/rolling on people, ramming his head into them, etc 🤦🏻‍♀️😂)and once he's in flo its difficult getting him to settle down. I'm a fairly new mom and in all my years of taking care of kids I've never seen a child with as much energy as ours. Not that things always run smoothly lord knows lol but I finally figured out how to get around some things. No meds at this point and I'm hoping to avoid them. Not that I'm against it bc I know its necessary and beneficial to them, but I know with medication its tricky business and its all about finding what works for that individual. So for now I'm just going to do and try everything I can. Like now when we go to the grocery store first thing I do is tell him what is going on and what I expect from him. I constantly engage with him in the store, pointing at things and asking him questions about them. I'll let him help put things in, let him pick out a special food so he's less likely to just pick up random things. I always praise him for all his help, he loves that stuff. But yea lol he's just an all around great kid. Its sucks we live in a world that forces people to believe they have to conform to a "normal" that dosen't even exist.

I have become friends with parents that I then had to stop going around because they would always comment thinking my child is undisciplined and putting so much pressure on me. I have ADHD and it’s very likely my son does. There are other ways that are more effective to dealing with a non typical neuro type that people without this wouldn’t understand. I’m not sad about losing the friends but I did try to force it for a long time, instead of accepting my own parenting, myself, and child. Other people will have opinions and can be negative, even if I welcomed them to share those, it did not mean they were right. And if people don’t think they are listened to they kind of lose respect, which went both ways.

My daughter has the inattentive type, and my son has the hyperactivity/impulsive type. I, too, have ADHD (inattentive type). For us, it is manageable. There are just certain things that we need to do to manage it. It has certainly been a learning process, and I am confident to say that we now have a good system down. Also, Quillichew (for the kids) and Concerta (for me) have worked beautifully. Thanks again for sharing your video and spreading awareness. I'm 13 about to be 14 next month and I think I have ADHD. This 'noticing things before 12' gets me tripped up because although I can pinpoint specific examples of how ADHD has affected me before 12, I never really noticed any symptoms? I've been diagonsed with anxiety since I was 11. I don't know, it feels like I'm lying to myself though I know I'm not...I've never struggled academically in anything that wasn't math. Even now, I'm in an honors class and have been since I was in 4th grade where I have about 95s in every subject. It feels like I'm lying because I always thought I was 'just weird.' My family has always pushed horrible labels on me and stated that I'm not normal like other kids (which I am most definetely not). This includes socially, emotionally, and regular development because I was always slower on learning things such as tying my shoes and not wetting the bed...Those types of skills which you learn early on I only really mastered at 10 years of age. I am extremely sensitive to the point everyone at my elementary school considered me a 'cry baby' and I always dealt with anger horribly. Well, I have social anxiety so I feel like that already answers that. I know I'm different but it feels so weird that there might be a term for /how/ I'm different because there's people like me. My step brother has ADHD and I never knew until he told me last year, and we are so similar, so there's that...
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I really want to get diagonised and I've researched it but I don't know how. And it sort of feels like I'm lying to myself. I don't understand. This is complicated. What should I do?

@@originalxsammy8097 Hello! I hope you're able to find the help you need! ^^ I recently re-scheduled with my therapist and I found out that he actually does ADHD evaluations! I'm really unsure because I feel as if I'm still not being truthful, and If I pinpoint this label on myself and It turns not to be true It'll be like a confirmation that I really am all the bad things people say I am. I know ADHD isn't an excuse for anything, but I think it's better to know you're different for a reason rather than just because you are.
Anyway, I think I'm going to take a chance and ask for the evaluation. I hope you're able to do so as well. I appreciate your comment and the sentiment. Have a nice day!

Going to get a diagnosis will help you find out if you have ADHD, and if not, the therapist running the diagnosis will most likely have an inkling as to who to talk to next. There is ASD which is a vast spectrum, social pragmatic disorder, and so many other disorders that once you learn about them and how they impact you, you will find the tools and skills and possibly medication you need to help you. Always be your own advocate and reach out to school staff. If your school does not have a therapist you can connect with, ask the front desk for websites and emails of psychologist staff who work for the district. They will be more than willing to help you get into contact with whomever you need.

Hey! I noticed it seemed you wanted to know what happened and why I came here to look. Well, I'm actually nearly 11 and am bullied for my so-called "ADHD / ADD". I'll tell my story if you're curious!
My "Friends" and I were in ELA (we're in Spanish immersion), and I wasn't paying attention, mind you, I was much more interested in the paper origami piano I created during History. I was practicing my chords for the song I was supposed to perform the next day. The teacher noticed I was interested in something other than her lesson. Her immediate thought was "Oh, this student is on her phone." May I remind you, I don't currently own a phone, just a laptop. She said something along the lines of "______, give me your phone. Class is in session." I responded with "Ma'am, I don't own a phone. I just have trouble focusing on things." After class, my "friends" humiliated me over my embarrassing encounter the class before. I believe one named Keira said something like "Dude, ADHD sucks!!!! I Have it, and it's not fun." (She didn't have it, she's just a lying b*tch.) I was curious about what ADHD actually meant.
As far as I know, I just know I have Anxiety, Depression, and Insomnia. Here I am, and I'm fairly certain I have ADHD / ADD after watching this. Thanks, and hope you found this helpful!

i pretty sure i have ADHD or ADD. i’m not sure though because my father was the same as a kid, and was tested for ADHD, and didn’t have it. i find it very hard to focus in school and find myself daydreaming and fidgeting with things all the time. i also find it super hard to get into anything (reading a book or watching a video that i’m not interested in. i’ll read it and hear it in my head but i just forget about it as soon as i think about it again.). i’m bored very easily too. i sometimes get hyper for no reason. i have other things too that i can’t really describe, i guess lol.

Hi.im A Mom of a teen who was hyper and impulsive as a child and now at 13 is better but still looses focus and needs lots of reminders. From what you described you reminded me of my child so take heart it's not necessarily a bad thing people with ADHD and also people on the autism spectrum a lot of times end up being extremely creative imaginative Innovative thinkers there are TH-cam videos like this to watch that will encourage you there's also tips on how to cope with ADHD online one tip is to make a list my daughter functions much better with lists and reminders that she can see. Also regulary exersize helps release excess energy and you make concentrate better after exercising because now you are calm and can focus this works well for my child also said she has been doing homeschooling since you was in second grade and really loves it.
But daydreaming is not necessarily A Bad Thing there are some people who are straight A students and very studious but cannot have one original idea and their head we are all different so focus on your qualities and not on comparing yourself to anyone else okay?. Keep smiling.you are enough.you are awesome.Be creative.Be kind. Put effort.Thats enough to be happy. We all can improve on something but don't let you obsess over it self-acceptance is very important.🙂❤-
      from a well meaning Mom.

I make noises in class and the kids say can you stop and sometimes they say it really harshly, and I feel really happy and I keep making the noise. I also have these funny voices I do when I get bored, and I get hyped up when I do them, and then the kids kept laughing at me, and they always said: “Hey Simone, can you make that noise again?” I stopped doing it for them because I started to notice them snickering when I did it, and it hurts so much. I think my friend notices it too, cause she has this look on her face that is just saying “Does she know?” Or something like that.

He interacts with extended family very well. However, inside the house, his room is a mess, he is shouting all the time fidgeting all the time, pulling on things, knocking on our heads, screaming into our ears, constantly seeks gadgets or junk food, eats messily even now at 14. The first time I had heard of it was in Percy Jackson, which sounds stupid but I realized that was similar to how I was. I easily snap, and I am DEFINITELY forgetful. I even forgot my backpack. At school. Which I wear on my back (like all the time). Being blunt is also a big part of me. I blurt random things out. My friends say I have to attention span of a goldfish, at the best. I also think my dad has it as well (or he’s just hella good at multitasking) because we both can talk and listen to five people at once. I am extremely disorganized. Trust me, you won’t believe how messy my desk and my room is.

My 5yo is type 3 adhd. He runs into roads with no regards to cars or anything around him, he just got in his first fight because a kid hit him in the back and that was the straw (he’s usually amazing in school) he can’t stay still, struggles with group activity, struggled with holding a pencil because he just wanted to build with blocks instead and never had an interest sitting to draw/ color But he’s so incredibly smart to the point where he’s getting an iq test this month to see if he qualifies for gifted classes. He’s just sooooo impulsive, I worry about his safety more than anything. He’s in occupational therapy which has helped a bit but his school is amazing and has done so much to help him. I wish someone paid attention when I was younger, I struggled sooo much. I’m finally starting to get some kind of structure in life and I have 5 kids. Myself and husband have adhd as well as my 8yo and 5yo.

I am easily sidetracked because I just randomly go through my book bag at school and when my mom tells me to go get something and I get sidetracked and I have to go back to her to see what she needs again. I am talking excessively because my teacher is always telling me to be quite in class. I always squirming and fidgeting because I have bad anxiety and so I like to bring a squishy to school and squish it. I am frequently forgetful because my mom tells me to do something and I forget what she says. I am interrupting because when my mom is talking to my dad I just budge into their room and answer their questions.

    @itsgraceofficial1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I don’t have think I have ADHD nor ADD but I’m wondering if I have a learning disability? Please feel free of comment your thoughts on this
    My symptoms:
I struggle a lot in Geography and English and sometimes in maths. I don’t understand a question that everybody else seems to understand. Sometimes I have to read the question over and over like 3-5 times.
I’m now 14 and I’m struggling to sometimes compute what people are saying. Once I was at school and the teacher was explaining a game I’ve never played or heard and though it was a tricky game in general I didn’t really under stand. It just went in one ear and out the other. I ended having the game explained 3 times and I got some of it and I ended up getting it as I go but there was an example
Now I know a lot of people say they get detracted soooooo easily but tbh I don’t think I get detracted that much though within saying that. I mostly read the comments during videos. I’m always fidgeting with something in class at lunch at home. And back to the not understanding questions. I just generally don’t get it. Sometimes I’ll know what all the words in the question means but I can’t put it together. Sometimes I don’t know any of the words in the sentence. I get embarrassed to say anything. One of my friends who is on a scholarship at my school I’ll call her Kayla, she’s getting fed up with me asking her questions all the time. Like how to spell this word or what does this mean I don’t get it!
I also fidget non stop. In class, at home. As I was writing this I thought of this while I was fidgeting lol. Also when I’m reading a book I sometimes read from a random spot cause it’s the first word I see and it’s really hard to stop myself from reading and also when I’m reading a book it’s hard to remember the stuff. I’m reading a book right now and I have no idea where the character is and who she’s with. It’s just really confusing. (It’s not just with book).
Also I talk to myself without me knowing it and in my head think about things and have arguments with myself a lot of the time. (Christians please don’t hate. For example: I’m trying to learn and want to believe in god. I attend a Anglican school and a youth club but in my head I’m just thinking, “there’s no proof” “what are the odds in this god being real and not others”. I truely am trying to believe but im struggling. I haven’t been to youth all year so far) though that might be a personal problem not a symptom but still.
I do forget things not too much and I have a record of missing the bus. Or getting on the bus in the middle of the road (hehehe). My best friend has ADHD and also my brother has too though we think he might have something else as well. I’m not the best at thinking things though. Should I be concerned about this or is this normal?

I don't do it anymore, but when I was younger, around 11-16, I would flick my arm with a very sharp pencil for minutes at a time. Sometimes I would bleed (just a little) but for the most part it would just leave a bunch of red marks. I don't remember being depressed, but I was anxious so that could be it. I wondered if that could be a sign of ADHD but now that I think about it it could've just been anxiousness
