  • The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has landed and, spoiler alert, it’s fantastic.
It’s an EV developed from the outset as a driver’s car. It has up to 641bhp, a 162mph top speed and can go from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. But there’s much more to the car than numbers alone.
Join Matt Prior for a full technical overview, interior and drive mode walkaround, a track test, and as we answer the question: will it drift?

Just turn off the fake engine sound if you don’t want to hear it. By using the gear shift, you can recognize braking timing and acceleration timing more easily than normal electric vehicles when cornering on the track. It has literally entry supercar level of agility with its one fourth price. It just not agile on the straight road for drag race but also on the track. Even so, haters just hate it 😊

I dlon't mind the engine sound but then again my daily driver is my 1.4 diesel Yaris that sounds like a tractor. Actually shame Hyundai don't let you select that for shitz and gigglez.
Very clever tech and it looks like great fun.
My one thought though is that hot hatches through time have always been fairly petite, some of the best have been the smallest that you can fling about on a narrow twisty road and not worry about the wing mirrors getting knocked off. Matt did not mention the size of the car but it made those amazingly big 21 inch wheels with 275 ( !!!! ) tyres look normal sized, so it must be pretty wide.
£65 000 cost as well made me wince.
Imagine how good an Ioniq 1 hot hatch would be ! Lot smaller, perhaps 320-350bhp and "only" 225 18 inch wheels on it. Bit like an EV Yaris GR. Maybe Toyota are watching.

It does not have the customization, torque vector ability, or feedback this will. But a setting where you can matt it on fun roads without overcooking anything for whatever reason you might including impulse control , garden variety stupidity , over estimation of your prowess or the cars , or anti social isssues where your not as concerned about others as should be oh and i guess driving privlidge preservation mode .
Im sure there is a TON OF PROGRAMMING to try and figure that out but i really dont know .
It could double as Valet mode , young male non owner driver mode , parents bought their kid it mode and it stays on for a while to preserve the genetic code invested in , anybody you know is nuts who you might need to let drive .
I know there are all kinds of configurations but certainly nothing like i have described . i " GUESS" there could also be a slider option by total hp and torque where you can customize it yourself to find something like that that suits how you drive if your a late brake or early brake etc etc which hopefully your style changes if for instance you live where i do where there is essentially ENDLESS FUN TECHNICAL ROADS that you may not really fully understand or always have complete surety whats around bend etc , might be a single time you take that road so no learning and only BIG WARNING SIGNS with slower speeds posted of which are the ones most fun to double the recomendation but same sign and speed may not have the same value of info the same way there are roads with low speeds that you drive regulary that obviously make no sense except that most people without trying struggle to keep speed down because it doesnt make sense which are the ones loaded with tax collectors / traffic cops which is a misnomer as they hide in places and at times when traffic is light so they can catch and at times when the danger of speeding on those roads is the least of an actual " traffic " safety issue . Same reason they plant themselves right after the sign that seemingly drops the limit abruptly despite no change to road and perhaps the sign comes into vision around a turn or something where you have less time to check speed or possibly not even notice thinking its just a redundant sign same as last because nothing about the road or environment seems to call for it and perhaps it is in conjunction with a down grade where its PHYSICALLY HARD TO do the limit because your impulse is to not wear breaks as well as take free energy you already paid for going up at higher speed and thinking what a waste of brake pads and free travel .
But yeah . Non anti social public sport mode or Slow car fast mode , or self control mode or whatever .
Like many things starting off with less power which in or on most things dulls throttle response allows you to push harder to learn . Like learning to ride on a Ninja 250 or Suzuki SV 650 before buying a litre class super bike to try to learn how to drag your knee and or explore counter steer in turns on power / at speed etc . Learning to rip wide open on slower lighter bike and moving up means you can ride that superbike better then the perosn who has the money and just buys the baddest bike they can to learn and finds out they think motorcycles are not as fun and too scary to reach those places that are fun all leaned over / going fast .

In a recent article of yours about EV battery life, you give the impression that there is nothing to worry about traction battery longevity and the traction battery will outlast the car. I have owned a Nissan leaf Teckna 30 kwhr 6.6 charger, made in Sunderland in 2016. It is now 7 1/2 years old and has only done 38k miles, yet it has lost 33% battery and range capacity, with 4 out of 12 battery bars gone. Byorn ( Norway ) from youtube has just tested a modern 2 year old liquid cooled id3 with a battery loss of 6 1/2 %, James Cooke on youtube had to pay to change his model s battery after 8 years, battery life's id3 had a battery loss of 10% after 2 years, to name just a few of the EV's i am aware of, with range debilitating degradation or total failure, over a short time. I suggest that EV batteries are no where near as long lived as what you suggest in this article. I also own a 15 years old Mercedes E Class diesel, which still has the same brimmed range of 650 miles as it did when i bought it. This suggests to me that my EV will only last about half the time my diesel car will before the range in the EV, is useless. I will never, ever buy another EV and in my opinion they are just not fit for purpose, going against all the pro EV propaganda out there, which does not align with my first hand experience.

All very clever but one point I think is important - how much better would it have been with an engine and that sound being real? The passion for cars comes from the senses, hence y gear change and noise is needed to entice the petrolheads. If u don’t do that then cars become a disposable tool. The speed this is rapidly becoming boring and I never thought I’d say that

    • @eincutr
      @eincutr 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

while I agree with you, how much of this is only possible by this car being an EV? the torque vectoring, the adjustable F/R power, the lower center of gravity etc.
Hyundai have done wonderful work on petrol cars, I have the i30N myself and it's fantastic, but for the foreseeable future, petrol cars are kinda doomed by economic laws and regulations worldwide.
The EV market is booming, it's a safer investment for companies, especially Hyundai group who is just "recently" started to shine.
And I'm glad they are still trying to make do with the constraints of the EV (lack of feel, lack of noise, weight and autonomy) to please enthusiasts and bring something that almost no other manufacturer really does with their EVs, at least not at this price range (while it being super expensive).

(hint: 1,250kg, and only 175 section tyres with pure rwd and a carbon fibre tub. For every opportunity to get the 5N to it's limits there are 100 opportunities to get a little i3 to it's limits, which makes it more fun, more of the time.......)

First of all I am not anti electric and it's great that this is fun to drive. As with ice cars I see too many modes. Why not simply set up a car properly like the good old days?
Ditch the fake engine noise. It's trying to be something it's not.
Let's get back to a simple car, without phone compatibility. Just sat nav and switch on and go? Too many toys. We want to just enjoy the drive. That's the car I'd want.

N is about the capability of an everyday sports car...
      1. You can take it to the track and go mad... the tech helps you monitor your car as you do that
      2. The sound is your your own health... your body has been conditioned to associate speed with noise and inertia... when that doesn't happen the body goes it shock... ie.e pple vomit get car sick u name it
      3. We live in a world where we need to look after the earth... so if u buy this u need to be able to charge it the green way... this is massive step for company noone would mention in the same breath as any German car... now they sit well an truly ahead of any VW performance car... they offer the best track days with profession TCR driver on hand to guide you!

Because setting it average gives average performance and people want specific features will either not get them or have ones they don't want. With this you can pick which features you want on and off and tune them to your liking making it better for how you want it. Why only have vanilla to choose when there are plenty of good flavors available?
