I'm a new tier and I really appreciate your tips and methodology as you tie. You have helped me diagnose some of my issues I have been having. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos!
Thanks Terry! I haven't watched this video in months, but I'm looking at the thumbnail now, and that thing does have a great profile. Mike Valla is a master! And by the way, I just tied one of his other bucktails last night-- it's called the Poison. If you like sparse streamers, you'll like that one too. Watch for it in the next few days. :-)
Artistic beauty. This whole series has been just that. I have totally enjoyed these streamer videos. Thank you for all you have been willing to share tying these. Your tying skills are incredible.
I just started tying flies like 2 weeks ago. I am still struggling with a few things but these videos helped me with a lot of small and big issues. I think i even tied some flies that are above my level, being a complete beginner in flie tying, thanks to this guy. Just listen to what he says, and everything will be fine. Keep up tying! (Sorry for bad English, i am from the Netherlands)
Another nicely done video. One of the things I was taught with tinsel is tie it in at the front, lightly coat the thread base with head cement , wrap down and back . The trick you used to gather the stray fibers is what I do with each color of buck tail.easiest way to keep them separate!
A nicely sparse fly, as it should be. I’m glad you made a point of how to tie in & wrap the tinsel. A lot of online tyers make a point of tying in the tinsel for nearly the whole length of the hook to avoid any bumps the the body. The problem is that means whole new layers of thread, adding thickness & time to making the fly. It was interesting to see that you were able to use your rotary feature for wrapping the tinsel even though the vise & hook were not set for inline. Maybe not optimal or easy but certainly functional.
Thanks Bob, and I'm of the Mike Valla and Peter Charles school of keeping it thin when possible. And you're right, aligning the hook with the axis would certainly have made it a smoother tie, but it worked okay. 😁
Thanks Darren! And you're right, it doesn't take too many colors of bucktail before you end up with a gaudy oversized head. (Which I've been guilty of plenty of times!)
Nice tying, thanks for demonstrating. I like the peacock hurl on top but concerned about how fragile it is. I suppose it would be easy enough to add more if it gets ripped off.
Sir Matt that's a great look streamer Sir. I've never tied one, I'm going to order some materials and streamer hooks and soon then try tying that beauty. I like the peacock herl with the curl very cool. Thanks Sir Matt. I hope you had a great Holiday.
Thanks Edward, hope you did too! One tip for bucktail streamers-- order a full size in natural. Probably about $5-6 and it will have enough brown and white in it for many flies. Then maybe a multi color pack which will have smaller chunks of red, black and yellow. That will give you lots of options!
You too Otto! It's been my pleasure supporting you-- I'm learning a lot. And... I want to be able to say "I knew Otto when he only had 100 subscribers. Look at him now!" No black Friday shopping for us. Maybe a little online, but we're at the farm this weekend. 🎄🎄🎄
@@SavageFlies "I knew Otto when he only had 100 subscribers. Look at him now!" that made my day! This has been an interesting journey! Yeah, I kinda meant online (who goes to the stores for deals anymore lol) I can't remember seeing a store on a black friday in the past years. Enjoy your time over there Matt!
You got it Pablo; thanks for watching! One viewer did remind me that we can put a separate loop around each color bundle. It does help to keep the colors separated. I'll try to demonstrate that on the next bucktail streamer. Cheers. -Matt
Great tip Michael. I've done that with Mickey Finns and other streamers when I have bigger clumps to put on, but maybe I should try it with all bucktails. I'll do that for the next one I do one the channel! Cheers. -Matt
Thanks! Not this one in particular but I do use barbell eyes on occasion. Usually on some warmwater bass streamers that I'll be throwing with a 5- or 6-weight rod.
Absolutely! The Mickey Finn and Black Nosed Dace are probably my go-to streamers here in Maryland. I haven't tied them for the channel as there are already dozens of videos out there, but maybe I should anyway. Thanks for watching my friend!
I like the bucktail technique, Matt. IMHO, Far too many tiers end up with oversized, stacked versions looking chunky and square. Thin and wispy just seems more like a baitfish.
I was browsing "Trout" and seen a dry fly called the "H.L Howard" and it's seems like an easy fly that be a good beginner's pattern so I was wondering if you could do a video over it.
Are you talking from Ray Bergman's "Trout?" If so, sure, I can take a look and see. I'm not home this weekend but can check it out in a couple of days. I'll let you know!
how do you make the hair stay like that mine always bundles up so large and spikey, i use deer body hair is bucktail better or am i using too much or tighten it less?
Good morning Raffael. Without going back and watching it (I'm heading out the door right now), I'd just point out that not all bucktail is created equal. Even the hairs on the same tail can be different from one part of it to another. Some of it could be long and straight, and some short and crinkly. And some of it can be a little hollow (like body hair). I think the best tip is to select the best hair you can find on the tail you have, and then yes, don't make the wraps too tight. At least until you have it positioned how you want, and then you could put a few tighter wraps in front of your medium wraps without causing it to flair. Hope this helps.
Thanks! I'm about to hit 5k hours so no issues there. The subscribers have been slowest for me. What about you? Are you going to have the hours when you get the 1k subs tomorrow??
Cool cocktail technique with the peacock.
Thanks Lee-- nothing like these simple, sparse bucktails!
You are fast becoming my favorite site. Thanks for sharing your talent!
Thank you Jack, for the kind words AND for watching/supporting the channel. Cheers. -Matt
Looking good, Matt. It looks even better once you shine up that black head.
Agree! Anytime you can make a nice shiny head it gives it that finished look. 👍

@@SavageFlies Looking forward to it. We are in lockdown again here and so lots of You Tube and soon some fly tying. :-)
Good luck with that. Tying helped keep me sane during the long months stuck inside. Stay safe!

Thank you my brother! Got another Smoky Mountain nymph for Saturday. 👍
Thanks Matt for another Great Video, nice helpful tips learned here, like the peackcock curl tip, this fly almost looks like the BlackNose Danc🤷🏻♂️,
Nice job on this bucktail. Nothing wrong with simple flies, they are my favorite flies. Cheers
Thanks Darren! And you're right, it doesn't take too many colors of bucktail before you end up with a gaudy oversized head. (Which I've been guilty of plenty of times!)
@@SavageFlies you bet. I've tied some with 5 colors plus peacock. You pretty much have to count the hairs so you don't bulk it up too much lol

Nice fly.if you make the wraps around the hair before you tie it in it helps prevent it from rolling around the hook.

I caught a nice smallie on this pattern. 6wt 9ft with 8ft fast sink polyleader
Outstanding to hear Milan! I can definitely see this being a great bass pattern. :-)
