Dude, I can’t tell you enough how VALUABLE seeing the flies wet really is. Not to mention seeing it “swim”. Excellent and should be included with more tying vids

Great video. Been tying for years and didn't know or maybe forgot about the hot water trick.
I met Lefty twice. Both times at fishing expos. He actually approached me on both occasions and just started talking to me like we were old friends. He was like that with everyone. A very humble and unpretentious gentleman.

Just tied up an army of these. One of the best and most well guided fly videos I have watched. The small detail makes all the difference... THANK YOU

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have to give you props for the detail information on cut direction, locations of where and how to get hair from the bucktail and hackles. And, like others have said, the underwater shot at the end is phenomenal. Looking forward to more!

Another excellently done video. I’ve tied a few of these, but your subtle tricks make them look so much better than before. I’ve tied these all the way down to number 16 and up to 3/0 - - great all-around fly and your technique makes it look better regardless of the size. Thank you Tightlinevideo - another great job.

Your videos are so great. After 20+ years on streams I just started working some saltwater. Being able to catch fish off a fly of my own making is so satisfying and your videos have given me confidence in my own tying processes for both salt and freshwater flies.

The hook location in the vise does look a bit strange, but it is correct. The Dyna-King vise I use has two indents lower down in the jaws for larger hooks. These hold large hooks really securely while saving the jaw tips for smaller hooks.

Nice video. I like to watch Lefty's video on tying this fly, but I find that yours is more instructive. I especially like watching the fly underwater at the end. It gives me fish fever every time I see it :-) I tied some wicked looking deceivers after this video. And I like to run them under the water as you show, just so I can see them when they're wet (I'm not worried about the feathers though) Also, you have a great voice for narration.
    Thanks.

Nice observation Thor. There is flashabou on that underwater fly, but it sure isn't real visible, at least not in that light. You would think it would be flashing like crazy. I'll reply back if I figure anything out. Thanks for watching.

Lovely video as ever. Great photography and a voice you could listen to all day. A good tip re cutting the bucktail. Would you akways use white feathers for the tail. I like the combination of white and flourescent yellow or green. It looks great in the water and the fish like it big time. Over here i catch all species from mackerel to European Bass on my own white and green flies. A few days ago i caught as many bass on a trace with three of these as my boat partner did with three soft plastic lures with biult in vibrations from the tail as we drifted over a sand bank. I was chuffed with that performance against commercial lures with considerable research behind their design. Anyway what about using grizzly hackles. Have you ever

If you haven't already, search "hand whip finish" on TH-cam, our video is currently the 6th one down. We produced it quite a while ago, but I think the information is still good. Hans's video at number 5 is also very good. It really isn't that hard, it just takes practice.

Thinking about making a few of these for walleyes/white bass at one of my favorite lakes. The lake is pretty shallow, and we always cast for walleyes there throwing a white/chartreuse twistertail grub. Same works on the white bass. I have had success on bucktail jigs that i have tied myself, never really gave Lefty's pattern much thought!

I assume, with that much material, that this is a very slow-sinking fly. Do you ever add wire weight? I tied a bunch of Clousers, which will probably sink like stones. I like the thought of having some Deceivers in the box that will fall much more slowly.

What is the color of the tail crystal flash? What is the other flash you use for the tail, my english ear is not so good, I hear medium flash something?

yeah, usually the rooster saddle hackles come in 5-7" packs but when you cut out the marabou parts at he base it ends up giving you varying lengths you can work with.

Will the red krystal flash make or break the fly? I slayed largemouth on a deceiver with no red flash, but was wondering if when the fish aren't hitting it as well, would the red entice a fish more?

Official CwaiG strung saddle hackle, aka "shlapin". alot cheaper than on the hide. it's super webby so it can't be used like hackle on a wooly bugger.
