      A pretty good resource for his music, might help with a video. Always begin with The Glow pt.2, of course.

    I actually heard a different story about Be Aggressive, I heard that the keyboard player Roddy wrote it as a way of playing a joke on Mike (with Roddy being gay and Mike being straight) cuz he found the idea of a straight man singing those lyrics amusing, but he didn't expect Mike to make sure they played it at nearly every show cuz he didn't mind singing it 😂

      Both The Microphones and Mount Eerie discographies are criminally underrated. Everyone only ever talks about The Glow Pt.2/A Crow Looked At Me and while both are great, Phil has so much more excellent music few ever really explore

  • @saintpyo
    @saintpyo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Oh my god, No Flashlight finally getting the recognition it deserves! It's amazing how Phil can convey so many different ideas in such a short runtime. I Hold Nothing in particular stands for what I love abou this album. This extremely catchy and emotional melody that sticks with you, when you dare to uncover the curtain of noise. This record is so personal to me that I feel this irrational happiness and relief that you enjoy it so much, as if it was my own music.

    I think metal purists like Bergtatt pretty well, it’s Ulver’s highest rated release on Encyclopaedia Metallum (which is usually a good yardstick for how metal elitists feel about a given band/record)
    As a side note I actually really like that there’s such a centralized resource for heavy metal culture. Even though they would disparage many bands I’m a big fan of I think it’s valuable to have a community of “keepers of the faith” to maintain the “metal canon”. I think canons and institutions are important, at least you can use them as a reference point. More academic genres like classical and jazz are canonized by virtue of being taught at universities, but I wish more community-led institutions existed for other genres too.

Also, good call on Bergtatt being a suitable entry point for people new to black metal

    Wildheart! Definitely an underrated gem, but that describes Miguel’s career. He has been unfairly overshadowed by The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and even at times Jeremih. Oh well, it’s still an excellent album, and the intro track is one of my favorites from that year.

    I'm so happy you mentioned Bogdan rasczy sky (??) S music. I'm just tapping into it myself these days from an interview I read from Richard. He basically stated he was the first or one of the first to go the "all digital" eclectic style that you hear a lot of in Richards Druqs for example. The resemblance is uncanny. And I just love the fact that Richard discovered this guy and in a way copied him haha.
    But for real, really nice music he produces. Damn.

      I know what you mean, but i used to be one, and believe, when you really get into late 80’s and early 90’s “necro production” (means shitty production), you become one. It makes you an elitist in some weird hypnotic way, when you finally get through the barriers of the sound it take some time and self awareness to go back.

    Why did you used to consider Miguel a guilty pleasure? He's the most pop-leaning artist on this list so I'm gonna guess that's probably the reason.
    I'd like to see you do a video on pop music (I know your channel and following isn't pop-friendly, but I don't care), like your favourite pop songs (like actual mainstream pop, not indie-leaning stuff that hipsters assure themselves is the type of pop that's ok to like) or even albums. Hell, even a guide on Madonna? Her discography is so vast and diverse for a pop artist and she undeiably shaped so much of mainstream music and pop culture, I think she's very much deserving of a guide, even if her more recent albums get criticised more. Janet Jackson deserves some spotlight too, she did just as much, if not more, for pop music than Madonna did. Her entire influence and legacy gets ignored all because of the Superbowl incident in 2004.

    Finally somebody who talks about Manic Street Preachers which is my favorite still existing band. Their last album Resistance Is Futile is certainly one of the best of the 2010 decade. (After some small errance in the 2000's and 2010 they came back with an excellent opus in 2018). James Dean Bradfield one of the best underrated guitar player if not the best in the modern times. To hear absolutely for the lenghty solo: Patrick Bateman. And their cover of Suicide Is Painless certainly enhances the Mash song.

    • @MrStephen182
      @MrStephen182 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The MSP lost their edge and what made them great in 1996. They deiced to play it safe with Everything must go and everything that came after. They wanted to appeal to the mainstream who listen to day time Radio 1 and that's good for mainstream pop (I enjoy mainstream pop because it does not try to be something it is not) but a once cool band like MSP should have never gone down that road. I'll never forgive them for that.

    • @marcbergeron8690
      @marcbergeron8690 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wildheart is an amazing album and a true testament to Miguel’s artistry. It’s him at his best and most focused for sure. This album wasn’t given the spotlight that it deserved, unfortunately. RCA not giving this the backing it needed was a shame. The Weeknd winning those grammys versus this record was wrong. It can honestly go toe-to-toe with any pure R&B or alt-r&b album of the 2010s and hold its own, and yes that means Blonde, Black Messiah, Malibu, you name it. His love and appreciation of funk, rock, Prince, and classic r&b showed up with him delivering his most impassioned vocals and best lyrics. Dude was writing his best songs to date. His personality was in full effect. It’s a sexy, sensual, wild and slightly psychedelic record, and one that doesn’t get talked about enough. I’m about to play it right now haha!

    I think it was a reviewer in The Wire talking about Fuck Buttons's Tarot Sport who said, yeah, it's all very predictable, but it just so much fun. I think that's basically true. No real surprises, you know where each track is going, just building and building on the original premise, but it's so ecstatic!

    I say you`re actually safe from black metal purists by picking Bergtatt - it has 94% positive reviews on Metal Archives (it`s REALLY rare for a popular record to have over 90% on that site) and it`s only the trvest of the trve who consider it "bad" or "hipster". You`re lucky you didn`t pick Deafheaven or Myrkur tho.

    Good looks on the Bill Evans record, i loved it after checking it out. You should check out David Axelrod’s Song of Innocence (if u haven’t heard it already). It’s a great mix of jazz and classical

    FUCK BUTTONS! Still amazed they used a song of theirs to open the Olympics! Was so surprised when I was watching the ceremony and first thing you hear was a track of theirs.

    Hi Oliver. I love the channel so much. You got me into Aphex Twin and Another Green World which I cannot thank you enough for. I was listening to I care because you do on my record player everyday I revised for my A levels. Now we are stuck in this societal limbo. I was wondering if you’re a fan of the Brian Jonestown Massacre? I figured they’re a really interesting band. Amazing records. Cult like following. Enigmatic but crazy genius lead singer/songwriter. Their consistency has been unparalleled to most artists in contemporary music and they played by their own rules and set the standard for lo-fi recording and DIY/Punk ethos at a time where music really needed that spirit. They recorded thank god for mental illness in under a week for 17 dollars. Pretty amazing shit. If you could do a guide, or something around them, I’d be forever grateful. I’d love to hear your view on them. Not a lot of videos on them and you make the best music content on the net. Stay safe bud x
