Eno is a genius and a personal hero of mine. His body of work as a solo artist alone is astounding. Once you add his production credits and collaborations, he's easily one of the most important musicians of the 20th century.

Before and After Science is my favourite Eno record, and it has had far more of an impact on me than Green World, Warm Jets etc.... I think the album encompasses all facets of Eno's musicality and gives the listener a taste of everything that he is about. As great as his other records are, there's something chilling about Science's second half (which acts as a great sample before Brian fully delves into his ambient works) and may just be more beautiful than even those ambient records.

I'm kinda with him on BAAS. I remember buying most of this period's work as cut-out cassettes in the 80s. BAAS was the one that didn't fit (to me). All I knew what Brian Eno was the guy on all the album sleeves. :D

I think it works much better as a vinyl than a cd, you can just put the side on that are in the mood for. My first experience with eno was a single with kings lead hat on one side and RAF on the other side (RAF= Red Army Faction )

Eno has changed my perspective on music so deeply. I encountered his ambient works at a time when that kind of music was so vital, even to my sanity. I've always had the tendency to focus on the music I was listening, and I always listened to complex, heavy, proggy stuff, experimental stuff. Having the opportunity of applying this same focus on ambient music, it was like submerging my attention in sound without it being exhausting and overstimulanting. I started to practice meditation shortly afterwards. My favorite albums are Ambient 4: On Land (last track Dunwich Beach, Autumn, 1960 is one of my favorite pieces of music ever! Yeah, an ambient piece), Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks and Equatorial Stars. Really a musical treasure.

I personally quite like Before and After Science, probably more than Here Come the Warm Jets. Something about the lush vocal harmonies, the sort of lilting, pastoral vocal melodies contrasted with the rhythmic, percussive guitar and bass and the busy drumwork really appeals to me. No One Receiving is great, King's Lead Hat too, Here He Comes as well.

    • @johnwilliams4658

I too am a big fan of Before and After Science. I don't in any way see at as a lesser record than the previous three. Eno learned a lot in Germany.

Spider and I, By This River, and Julie With... from the second half are my favorites. Serene, evoking an atmosphere that only exists in the great outdoors. As going where the sun thrives and smelling the fresh air. By This River has an ongoing loop of crickets chirping and ore strokes the water.

  • @Dreskiff23

Before and After Science --- Clearly Eno's best art rock release. Some tracks "not fitting" is intentional. When you consider the title, it makes a lot of sense that side 1 has a somewhat familiar art rock sound, and then side 2 becomes more and more ambient as it goes on. Not to mention it has some of Eno's strongest songwriting - "By This River," "Spider and I," "Julie With." I highly recommend this release.

Before and after science is one of my favorites. Of course kings led hat gave me a manic rush, and still does, but, Julie With is so beautiful and tranquil. The album seems to evolve from headyness into heartful calm.

    • @ForARide

Agree, but was it the first? I'd say the Velvets I'm Waiting For The Man, Venus In Furs, The Stooges I Wanna Be Your Dog and Nico's Evening Of Light can be considerered as the first (proto)-post-punk tracks. Afterall, didn't Eno say the Velvets only sold 30 000 copies, but everybody that had one, went on to form a band.
Had they all been a generation younger, releasing these songs in the late 70s or early 80s, they still would have been massive and spectacular, perfectly fitting into the time. Just sayin..

Really excellent video. I'm not new to Eno by any means, but it's difficult to know where to go after the big classics, especially given how many music writers/critics struggle to describe his ambient works without resorting to cliche. Not something that could be said about this at all - you really bring out all the nuances of the albums, the similarities and evolution between them, and it really shows how much work you put into it all. I'm a big fan, please keep it up!

  • @seamusin1697

Excellent commentary and insight, Oliver! I have a lot of Eno's stuff from Roxy Music to his solo career to other artists he has produced and collaborated with. He is, at times, an acquired taste but still remains a vitally important force in music in the latter part of the 20th and early part the 21st centuries. There is little doubt of his artistic and creative genius and how it has impacted many other prominent artists in the music industry like David Bowie, U2, Talking Heads Coldplay, and a bevy of others.

  • @astrophonix
    @astrophonix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

An Ending-Ascent is for me the most blissful piece of music I've heard, the minimalism of just having a multi-tracked melody line gives it a sense of a simple irreducible purity.

  • @talkingheadzzz2449
    @talkingheadzzz2449 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Man! You are a genius!!!!! Thank you for highlighting the importance of the non-ambient albums of Eno, which to me, are just as important, if not more so. However, I strongly disagree with you about Before and After Science. It is a bit disjointed but still amazing. The level of innovative Eno's aesthetics and atmospheres are a kind of exceptional language never heard before. Such is the case of Kurt's Rejoinder. Eno became the equivalent of modern 70's design, and avant art, like nothing else, defining a very special sensitivity. One point I want to make is that back then, this record was on the vinyl format, which gave a mandatory pause between side one and side two, which explains the lack of continuity between King's Lead and Here he comes. The two sides were meant to be different, side B is literally, the flip side. --I have been listening to Eno since the 70's. It changed my view on life, the world, and aesthetics. Thank you for your insights.

I have "Headcandy", the CD Rom was interesting, especially for the time. The whole thing was very psychedelic, the music which I enjoy and think it still stands up well on it's own. The visuals were a series of trippy colorful graphics that moved around the screen and changed shapes and colors. It was designed to be viewed in a very dark room and included glasses that when viewed at the right distance it duplicated the look of the screen into a 3 by 3 grid so you basically saw the visuals nine times but as one large screen (hard to describe).

The second side of Before and After Science, in my opinion, is supposed to be disconnected from the first half. Structurally, I think it is similar to the Bowie Berlin albums, Heroes and Low, as the second side is an ambient counterpart to the first side. I find the melodies and sonic characteristic of the synths will this side of the album is really beautiful.

Eno's four 70's 'art rock' projects are some of my favorite albums ever, with Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World easily ranking in any all time top 10 list I could construct, and in these sorts of situations where I love some part of an artist's discography so enormously I often find myself hesitant to explore the rest, partly because I'm already satisfied with what I've found and partly because I don't want to spoil my spotless impression of their work by hearing their almost inevitable decline and missteps (low-hanging example: imagine if you never knew post-pinkerton weezer existed...) --- But with the way you described some of these albums, I think you've convinced me that it's time to crack into ambient Eno.

Wonderful comprehensive guide to Eno's work! Thanks for taking the time to make this.
My personal favorites are Thursday Afternoon and the two albums done with Harold Budd (The Plateaux of Mirror and The Pearl). Apollo follows just behind. These tracks never get old, in part because they can never really be known or anticipated no matter how many times you listen to them. By this I mean, when compared to a standard pop song that becomes so familiar after a few times it's heard that you know exactly where you are in the song and what will come next at any given moment, the "non-linearity" of these tracks by Eno, especially Thursday Afternoon, defy this kind of familiarity. The sense of discovery remains in the music in spite of 30 years of repeated listening.

Before And After Science will always hold a place deep in my heart. I had not really heard of Eno until the Low/'Heroes' collaboration, and BAAS was my first exposure, my curiosity driven by the sudden explosion of musical novelty in the Bowie discs. I realized how fabulous a producer Eno was, and went out and started buying up the prior catalogue. I'm sure you get to Wrong Way Up from the early 90s...that is also one of my favorites, as it seemed to harken back to the good old days a bit...almost nostalgic in its references and listenability. :)

OLIVER! This is only my second listen to one of your "Deep Cuts" surveys, but I can tell you right now that you have a prescient aural awareness that is seamlessly coupled with a brilliant clarity of exposition.
I came to your channel hoping only to test my memory on the unfolding discography of King Crimson as it impacted my life from the purchase of the first album. What I found was a spot on comprehension of a now legendary artistic conceit that has up till now defied this kind of humanitarian treatment. How you managed to both understand the genius of Robert Fripp and level a mature praise through your musical analysis is a testament to the power of authentic talent.
Autoplay brought me directly to this Eno guide and, as with Crimson, I have listened to his musical output from my boyhood. I cannot express what sympathies arise from hearing your sparkling intelligence and musical appreciation converge here.

I'm not too familiar with his work pre-Music for Airports, but in the Ambient series Plateaux of Mirror is my favourite. It's just gorgeous. I love Eno and his ability to not just be a musician but this amorphous artist that encapsulates the space he projects is brilliant. It's like a beautiful piece of architecture or a great sculpture in the sense the space around it or negative space in it create the piece just as much as the piece itself and I think you touched on this perfectly. I love when people don't just provide opinions but clearly a plethora of research and love that stabilizes the opinions. Love your work man, keep it up

Mad props for having listened through his entire discography! I've gone into it a bit, but then go back thinking nothing is going to be as good as Another Green World, and that album, for sure, remains a perfect space to be bewildered by. But this video makes me want to take more time with some more of his others. Thanks for putting the time into the video!

Just watched. Quite comprehensive and compelling. The hour went by quickly. I always loved Eno and instrumental music. In the 80s, I attended his installation in Boston. Also Fripp performing Frippertronics before a Satriani G3 show in California. Eno has created a lasting Ambient artist colony. Bandcamp, for example, has many such artists. Good job covering Eno as a solo artist. I enjoyed it and your delivery.

I for some reason came upon your video here was six years ago you released it anyway
I started listening to Eno approximately 1975 when he started doing his stuff
So here in the valley about 45 minutes from Los Angeles both Captain Beefheart also known as Dans vanVliet and Frank Zappa came from
    Now
I had read someplace that Eno and I believe David Bowie
was sitting around and were very very impressed with Don Vanvliet especially Trout mask replica and all that stuff
My best friend from high school John Thomas eventually end up playing with captain Beefheart
Anyway the way you dissect Eno s work and all the people he’s been with is just
    incredible
and I agree with the other guy that said you’re you’re extremely underrated the way you put the all this together
    Praise to ya
Because it’s never ending discussion about you knowing all his attributes and
    Involvements
And every single aspect of everything
    About Eno
    …….

    Great video.
I heard eno talking about Apollo and he explained that when the astronauts were allowed to take a cassette each with them into space, most took country and western music. Whether for reasons of homeliness, comfort or cultural, He brought this idea into his compositions

Damn I never heard anybody talking about music so well for so long :D I love your channel.
My favs are "in dark trees" from Another Green World and Apollo album. I remember when I found it I couldn't believe how he captured the essence of cold, vast abyss in which we all are suspended. I think this album inspired me the most to get into making music/sounds (of which I don't have much idea btw, so it's cool to hear Brian Eno was also self-taught ;)

wow! What a job. Give yourself a break man! Incredible run down! I am also an Eno-holic. I prefer the big 4 vocal albums: Here Come The Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Another Green World AND Before and After Science. To me it was Eno nearly making fun of pop music and adding his take on it. Some of the most catchy and audibly unique music around. For anyone trying out Eno's music and do not want to fall into a coma of inner thought ambient stuff, I highly recommend the big 4 vocal albums. These albums show you WHY so many pop artists love him as a producer. Nothing sounds like these albums and THEY ARE GOOD. The charm is the mix of punk, prog rock, and ambient music that is scattershot on these records. It's like a rush and a relax on the same record.

Before & After is one of my favorite Eno albums. It doesn't gel well specifically because he's looking at his life before (side A) and after (side B) "science". He explores the art pop thing for a bit, and when you flip that record, damn, I don't know - something has changed. Side B is the pretty piece he ever released, maybe the pretty side of music ever released.

Kudos to you for undertaking the mammoth task of reviewing Eno's work. Most of what you say I am in complete agreement with. For me "The Pearl" is the supreme example of his ambient work closely followed by "The Plateux of Mirror" and "Music for Films" I play these albums often as a release from the stress of the day.

I'll be honest, I'm 58, and I have tons of music, but I know next to nothing about Eno's music, other than a bit of his production work. This video is a great introduction to Eno, and I will definitely get some of his music in the near future. I actually spot listened to some of his stuff over the weekend. However, I believe that Eno's stuff can't be sampled. It seems to take a much deeper listen. I look forward to exploring his discography.

Oh and I also have a copy of the collaboration with Peter Sinfield. Trust me when I say you are not missing anything here. The album mostly consists of Peter narrating Robert Sheckley's mediocre fantasy/sci-fi short story "In A Land Of Clear Colors". Eno plays a very tiny bit of atmospheric sounds lightly peppered throughout. Thanks for putting this great video together.

29:54 The sessions that became My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts were initially supposed to be a three-way collaboration between Eno, Byrne, and Jon Hassell. But Hassell was still finishing up Possible Musics, so Eno and Byrne started messing around without him. And then Hassell didn't care for the direction their first demos were going, so he dropped out. I love the finished album, but can't help but wonder what it would have been like with Hassell's influence.
32:12 This must have been an influence on The KLF. Their album Chill Out (one of the albums that jumpstarted the ambient house subgenre) had quite a bit of pedal steel guitar.

Amazing guide. I started with Music For Airports and that is still my favorite. Been picking up a lot of the rest of these here and there as I could over the years going in no particular order. It's great to hear it ordered chronologically in this way and sense some order in the releases I've picked up. There are definitely several albums I want to revisit now after hearing you describe them, and a few I now know I need to try to track down. Thanks for all the work you put into this guide. It is much appreciated.

Hey Oliver, great Vid. Thanks aplenty. The Album Land of Clear Colours is mainly narration and contains very little music. Maybe 4 short tracks of the 12 from memory. All tracks are untitled. If you like audio books get this album. The first Eno album I ever heard was Before and After Science and it, for me, is his best vocal album. Eno lamented to David Bowie at the time that his old proceses were not working, as they once did and he struggled with this project. The struggle was worth it though. Lyrically he is at his most lucid and ridiculous at the same time. It is not a coincidence that in the same period he was working on Low & "Heroes" that this album dropped and followed the uptempo A side, sombre B side model. Musically the album is disjointed however, so what! Do we want all the arrangements and themes the same all the way through an album?Great channel. Many thanksWas Textures amongst the reviewed albums?

I love Before and After Science, but I agree with it not flowing together as well. However, if you split it in half it works perfectly... bit more glam pop on side 1, ambient peace on side 2. Julie With is my favourite Brian Eno song so I couldn't possibly dislike this album!

Before and After Science is the perfect/imperfect blend of his art pop origins and his imminent ambient signature tone. Ranks very high in my books especially for Side 2.
