I’m having a really bad time with my depression. In this period, for me, nothing is more important than music. I listen to music for covering my negative and selfdestructive thoughts. I really enjoy your videos because they help me to think about something beautiful and to light up my life
You probably don’t care, I wouldn’t of when I was depressed but identifying yourself as depressed will only add to your depression. You really have to be careful with that because once you let depression become part of your identity, it takes a serious hold of you. Instead of saying you’re depressed, say that you are a person who is working to not fall into depressive behavior. Depression is a choice. I know that sounds crazy and insensitive but if you don’t believe it’s a choice, you are absolutely guaranteeing that you will remain that way. You are probably thinking something like “of course depression isn’t a choice, why would I chose to feel this way,” I know because I felt the same way. Whether it’s fair or not, the truth of reality is that if you ever want out of depression, you have to do the work to improve yourself. Making yourself a person who can stand up to hardship, don’t try to eliminate the hardship and fill the hole in yourself through external means. Nothing will ever fill the hole, you can temporarily fill that hole with music, drugs, sex, or anything else but after a while, that will cease to fill the hole. It all ends up at the same place which is rock bottom and when you get to that point, you won’t even be able to type a TH-cam comment, let alone function as a person. The only way out of this is to understand what I wrote in the beginning of this comment. Depression is a choice, not an affliction, and you, and you alone, are the only thing that can change that. Again, whether or not that’s fair, that’s the way it is. Nothing external will ever be a sustainable solution to the problem. Only internal work will change you. It may sound reductive but the only way to make it out is with daily work to engage in healthy behavior. This is uncomfortable work, especially in the beginning. You are not weak and neither are you helpless in the face of this issue. Being a stronger person, having a sense of perspective and gratitude, understanding that life is a gift and you can’t afford to waste any of it, loving yourself. These are things that you can practice and improve at. Believe me, the first step is to understand that you absolutely CAN control your mindset, you can, and you have to if you don’t want to live a life of suffering. Don’t try to fill the hole, put in the necessary work to eliminate the hole. The hole is endless such that it can’t possibly be filled, but with persistent, hard work and honest self evaluation, you can eliminate the hole. You are not helpless. The only reason I say all this is because your comment really resonated with me. I was addicted to heroin from age 15-23 and attempted suicide by overdose twice. It was a life that I wouldn’t want inflict on even my worst enemy. I just wish someone could’ve gotten through to me earlier on and somehow made me realize everything I’ve said here sooner, before it consumed a large chunk of my life. I was a hopeless, helpless, walking dead man before I finally realized that I COULD change myself and start living a fulfilling life as long as I stopped avoiding my problems, and my pain, and instead faced those things head on with the goal of developing strength and pride in myself for overcoming those problems. I sincerely hope you beat your problems and get to feel that pride for beating them as well. Good luck.
@@giusepperesponte8077 I know I am half a year late, but I just want to say that, as a person who periodically struggled with depression and have gotten out of it quite recently, your analysis of identity is very much correct. Thank you for this comment, it granted great insight into my condition and showed me a new perspective.
1. Orbital - In Sides 2. Gentle Giant - Octopus 3. The Streets - Original Pirate Material 4. Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me Soundtrack 5. Radiohead - In Rainbows 6. Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) 7. Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town 8. Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works 9. Fennesz - Venice 10. Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do Sorry I was too lazy to get the release years. I had trouble getting some album titles from just the video so I wanted to make it easier for other people to google them. Enjoy.
What do you like about Bruce? I think he's one of the worst artists and musicians of all time. I think that he's not only totally talentless, he can't write anything that's even mediocre. All of his music is a 0/10 for me and that's pushing it.
Here are some of my favorite albums in no particular order. Death-Symbolic Kendrick Lamar-To Pimp a Butterfly MF Doom- Mm.. Food Emperor-In the Nightside Eclipse Kyuss-Welcome to Sky Valley Run the Jewels-Run the Jewels 3 Death Grips-Exmilitary Vektor-Terminal Redux Aesop Rock-The Impossible Kid Nails-You Will Never Be One of Us Now I'm only 17 and haven't been able to listen to all the albums that I probably should but these are my favorites thus far in my musical experience.
A few years late, but what the hell. King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black Shellac - At Action Park Goblin - Suspiria Swans - The Seer David Bowie - Diamond Dogs Akron/Family - Set 'em Wild Set 'em Free Television - Marquee Moon Sonic Youth - NYC Ghosts and Flowers Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Yanqui UXO Modest Mouse - Moon and Antarctic
Woah Starless and Bible Black and Yanqui UXO over their other albums? Respect man. Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls and Fracture are 2 of the greatest songs ever
Some of my favorites are: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd Station to Station - David Bowie Radio Ethiopia - Patti Smith Remain in Light - Talking Heads Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins Loveless - My Bloody Valentine The Downward Spiral or The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails Vespertine - Bjork In Rainbows - Radiohead Depression Cherry - Beach House
You have very similar taste to me, In Rainbows and Wish You Were Here are probably my top 2 currently, Station to Station, Remain In Light and Loveless would definitely be up there for me as well
Very very nice choice the shoegaze, talking heads and Radiohead interests me but why did you choose wish you were here instead of maybe animals, the wall or meddle?
The Beatles - Revolver David Bowie - “Heroes” Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On Radiohead - Ok Computer Neil Young - Zuma Carole King - Tapestry Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda The Cure - Disintegration Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Bruce Springsteen - The Rising Congrats from Brazil!
As a young, 14 year old Trinidadian kid, having only been in the States for 4 years at the time, Original Pirate Material transported me far and away from inner city life in such a way that only Skinner was apprehensibly capable of accomplishing at the time! Perfect choice mate!
1. The Cure - Wish 2. Nine Inch Nails - Broken 3. The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs 4. Ride - Going Blank Again 5. XTC - Skylarking 6. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist 7. Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
Never seen a single video from you before but I subscribed immediately. A great list of excellent albums that's not full typical run of the mill choices. Really insightful anecdotes for each one as well. And I'm glad to see I Care Because You Do get some love. I feel like it gets overlooked a lot since it comes between the Selected Ambient Works projects and the more complex IDM-sounding Richard D. James Album. It's like the midpoint between those two eras and a really good overall representation of his sound. So many great tracks.
Personal top 5 1. Glow Pt2 by the Microphones 2. Quebec by Ween 3. Fevers and Mirrors by Bright Eyes 4. Mount Eerie by The Microphones 5. Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown
1. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come 2. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly 3. At the Drive In - Relationship of Command 4. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath 5. Aesop Rock - Skelethon 6. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf 7. Death Grips - The Money Store 8. Shellac - At Action Park 9. Black Flag - Damaged 10. Rancid - Life Wont Wait
big rancid fan, I had a deep discussion with some friends and relistened to all their albums haha. I have to say that I also think Life Won't Wait is the best.
"I Care Because You Do" album opening track (Acrid Avid Jam Shred) is by far one of the most immaculate electronic music piece i've ever listened to, genius sequencing, alien sonic sources, emotivity, dreamy visual suggestion...it has it all. long life the king!
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation Iceage- You're Nothing Pixies-Dolittle T. Rex- The Slider Iggy Pop- The Idiot Cloud Nothings- Attack on Memory Swearing'- Surfing' Strange Pallbearer- Sorrow and Extinction Elliot Smith- Either/Or Velvet Underground- White Light White Heat
I hate to say it (cause I think Pallbearer is the best doom metal band ever), but I wasn't that much of a fan. Their first album was so unique, and while I think Foundations of burden was great, it didn't do it for me like the first album and I think they've been getting less interesting every release. That's just my opinion. I think the guitars sound thinner and they've devolved into just playing chord progressions with 80's solos overtop. I'm judging them hard, admittedly. If anyone put out their new record besides them I'd at least say it was decent, but I know what they can do and it just didn't resonate with me.
Thanks for sharing deep_cuts, “in rainbows” is a fave of mine as well My list: 1. King Crimson - In The Court of The Crimson King 2. Orbital - Snivelization 3. Voivod - Nothingface 4. Brian Eno - Another Green World 5. Metallica - Garage Days $5.98 EP 6. Pinback - Autumn of The Seraphs 7. Lee Scratch Perry - Trojan Recordings 8. Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings 9. Leonard Cohen - Greatest Hits 10. Iron Maiden - Killers
In Rainbows is my personal favourite album ever. I don't get how those 10 tracks can sound so fresh every time I hear them! Awesome list/video man... definitely a new fan of this channel!!
Apex Twin's album cover... Scares the shit out of me every time. Fun to see that you liked the Dillinger esc Plan record that much! Same with Octopus by Gentle Giant. Those albums have always been special to me, but not "top 10 special". Thanks for sharing btw.
Subbed! Really enjoyed your videos and commentaries. Thought I share some of my favorites here: Nick Drake - Pink Moon Radiohead - In Rainbows Slint - Spiderland Pixies - Doolittle Galaxie 500 - On Fire The Cinematic Orchestra - Every Day Elliott Smith - s/t Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue Mogwai - Young Team Life Without Buildings - Any Other City Broken Social Scene - s/t The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Bark Psychosis - Hex Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister Air - The Virgin Suicides The Cure - Faith Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet The Stone Roses - s/t Weezer - s/t Black Sabbath - Paranoid Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures GY!BE - Lift Your Skinny Fists Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs (..try to keep it minimum but once I started a lot of albums just popped in my head, i think I can still continue but I'll stop here. Cheers!)
Difficulty stoppping? I know that feeling all too well - top 10 always spills into a top 20 or 30. Another great list who'se author (ie you) has enough of an overlap (13 or so) for me to be rather curious about those I've not heard - nice. BTW How many s/t Weezer albums are there now, is it 6?!
Have you heard Xiu Xiu's rendition of the soundtrack of Twin Peaks? It's a cover album that remains faithful to the soundtrack but Xiu Xiu brings his own sound to the mix and it sounds great!
My personal 10 Albums: - Pink Floyd: Meddle - Glenn Gould - Bach the Goldberg Variations (1981) - V.Ashkenazy: Sibelius the 7 Symphonys - Bulgarian female State Choir - A cathedral concert - Tangerine Dream - Phaedra - Brian Eno - Discreet Music - Vangelis - Soil Festivities - Klaus Schulze - Dune - Kate Bush - 50 words of snow - Keith Jarrett - A melody at night with you
Wow, I never thought I'd see an inclusion of Fennesz's "Venice" album in a favorite albums list. Man, that brings joy to my heart to see someone who loves that record so much. It's an absolute gem, and I'm so glad to see that you love it this much, Oliver. This is definitely one of my favorite ambient albums of all time. It puts so much imagery into my mind, and this one album alone is responsible for fueling my interest in actually going to Venice, Italy. Such a beautiful and emotional record, and I'm so happy to see that you love this record about as much, if not more, than I do. If I ever do go to Venice, then I'm putting this album on repeat while I'm there.
1. The Hot Rock - Sleater-Kinney 2. Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen 3. Closer - Joy Division 4. Spiderland - Slint 5. Captain My Captain - Team Dresch 6. Repetition - Unwound 7. Surfer Rosa - Pixies 8. Rain Dogs - Tom Waits 9. Dirty - Sonic Youth 10. Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown

I love Siamese Dream - I feel like people usually prefer Mellon Collie or Adore, do you experience that? OK Computer is definitely also my favorite Radiohead album, but I don't think that's too uncommon.
1. Turn on the Bright Lights - Interpol 2. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel 3. Kid A - Radiohead 4. Donuts - J Dilla 5. In Colour - Jamie xx 6. Sunbather - Deafheaven 7. first off, thank you Oliver for this great channel on music and your love of it. Your passion for it and the incredible analysis of different genres of music that you provide is a joy to watch and learn. Would you be able to do a video on the beginning of your journey with music, whether that was a particular album, concert or radio station. It could alternatively be a household in which music is played and enjoyed by your parents, brother or friends. For me, living in Melbourne, Australia, it was discovering non commercial radio station, namely 3RRR and 3PBS, independent, community, non profit stations, that opened me up to a world beyond top 40, irritating commercials and inane dj chatter. Then having friends at uni who I would go to gigs with, Melbourne has/had an amazing music scene.
My top 5 are: Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album Broadcast - Noise Made by People Buckethead - Bucketheadland Reverend Bizarre - III: So Long Suckers alt. Congrats on 10k! Been with this channel since the Nick Cave guide and I still contend that it was the best decision I ever made to subscribe. I've been introduced to so many new albums and musicians because of you and for that I am eternally grateful.
Happy to see I care because you do. Alberto balsam is just so impressive. The chair sliding across a hard floor that was used in the track was nothing short of musical genius.
I remember how In Sides brought me into Electronic music. I was eight I think and I sat in the old VW-Bulli of my older sister and listened to it with headphones. It blew me away so much, that I knew, There is no way back out of Electronic.

That's crazy, GENTLE GIANT!!! I bought Octopus (along with Forever Changes, which I thought was the name of the band) way back when, purely based on the artwork. Had never heard of either, you just knew they were going to be good. Exciting times. Great list bro

Very glad to see that your work is bearing fruits. When i subscribed, the channel was below a 100subs, but it wasn't hard to see that your work is only pushed by your passion. That became quiet rare on this platform... Keep up what you're doing and prepare for a continouosly growing community. Thank you so much for creating this format and community!

Anybody else blown away by how young deep cuts is?! He's so eloquent and so well versed in popular music across the board that it beggars belief. I was 25 in 2003, and I don't think I'd even heard of Swans, The Birthday Party, Fennesz, etc. at that point.
I'm a little late to this, but I just wanted to say I'm glad you spoke about "I care because you do", my favorite aphex twin album. If anyone doesn't know, there's an expanded version of this album with several bonus tracks on the aphex twin website - I've never heard anyone else talk about these, they're great additions and worth grabbing.

Love this channel. This list has about half stuff I've also connected with in my life, and about half stuff that's completely new to me. That's one of the things I love about music is even after searching for new and different stuff most of my life, there's still new and worthwhile stuff to discover.

I know exactly what you mean when you say that Syro is a source of comfort. The album is almost therapeutic for me, I could be on my way to take a final exam that I didn't study for (or some other stressful event) and I'd probably be completely at ease and comforted if I listened to it.

Gentle Giant's "The Boys In The Band" is one of my favorite prog instrumentals of all time. Absolutely bombastic, turning from on a dime from swaggering jams to sections which feel as though a lovecraftian sea monster is giving you a psychological assault. Such an amazing song, record, and band.
Oliver. Your're channel is amazing. I love the broad scope of tastes. Anyone that listens to music as diverse as Sibelius to Angelo Badalamenti, to Brian Eno, has my respect. I have been obsessed with record buying for 50 years, and own over 8000 vinyl Lp's and over 6000 compact discs. Hope you don't mind enclosed is my top 10, non classical, non jazz records. Although we couldn't have a more different top ten your ability to put the listeners experience into words is nothing short of extraordinary. I will check out the albums i haven"t heard. keep up the good work.
+1 on Fire Walk With Me score. I love the film but hve listened to this one regularly since the early 90s when I bought the cd. Whether drawing, dining with friends or just daydreaming it is guaranteed to enhance the vibe.
Every subscribe is so well deserved! The way your describe each album experience is an art in of itself. I used to think I knew a lot about music...but your channel has challenged and taught me so much more.
Aphex twin is pretty under appreciated for the impact he’s had. I really think his music had such an impact on not just electronic music but more genres that succeeded his works. He may not have directly influenced these different genres but he was a trailblazer when it came to inventive sampling and just in general producing music that was superbly creative and pushed the sonic evolution of music forward. It’s also been amazing to watch him progress as a musician, never stagnating, always going outside the box in interesting and innovative ways. I struggle to think of another musician who we’ve seen such consistent growth from over the course of decades. Very impressive.
Not a top 10 favs but 10 OF mine Radiohead - In Rainbows Envy - A Dead Sinking Story Loma Prieta - I.V. Converge - Jane Doe La Dispute - Wildlife American Football LP1 The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine Mastodon - Crack The Skye Deafheaven - Sunbather Brand New - The Devil and God...

I’m having a really bad time with my depression. In this period, for me, nothing is more important than music. I listen to music for covering my negative and selfdestructive thoughts. I really enjoy your videos because they help me to think about something beautiful and to light up my life
OMG same! Listening to music and making music is the best coping strategy!
The quality of your vids is fucking superb! You really deserve all the attention, and more. Love every vid man! Keep it up!
Thanks so much Dylan!
You should do a video on your vinyl collection (if you have one). Maybe talk about the sound, packaging, etc. That would be dope!

Sorry I was too lazy to get the release years.
I had trouble getting some album titles from just the video so I wanted to make it easier for other people to google them. Enjoy.
lhommealenvers Thank you.
What do you like about Bruce? I think he's one of the worst artists and musicians of all time. I think that he's not only totally talentless, he can't write anything that's even mediocre. All of his music is a 0/10 for me and that's pushing it.

As a young, 14 year old Trinidadian kid, having only been in the States for 4 years at the time, Original Pirate Material transported me far and away from inner city life in such a way that only Skinner was apprehensibly capable of accomplishing at the time! Perfect choice mate!

Thanks TJ! I really enjoyed doing this list, will probably do another for the 20K!
Personal top 5
1. Glow Pt2 by the Microphones
2. Quebec by Ween

big rancid fan, I had a deep discussion with some friends and relistened to all their albums haha.
_cow cud is a twin_
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation
Iceage- You're Nothing
Pixies-Dolittle
T. Rex- The Slider
Iggy Pop- The Idiot
Cloud Nothings- Attack on Memory
Swearing'- Surfing' Strange
Pallbearer- Sorrow and Extinction
Elliot Smith- Either/Or
Velvet Underground- White Light White Heat
Good list Justin! What are your thoughts on the new Pallbearer track?
I hate to say it (cause I think Pallbearer is the best doom metal band ever), but I wasn't that much of a fan. Their first album was so unique, and while I think Foundations of burden was great, it didn't do it for me like the first album and I think they've been getting less interesting every release. That's just my opinion. I think the guitars sound thinner and they've devolved into just playing chord progressions with 80's solos overtop. I'm judging them hard, admittedly. If anyone put out their new record besides them I'd at least say it was decent, but I know what they can do and it just didn't resonate with me.
Nice to see a fellow rare Elliott Smith fan here
@@ColombianThunder Elliott was a true genius. Roman Candle, S/T, and Either/Or are perfect albums

Just a personal top ten bro, I understand these aren't the 10 best albums ever
first off, thank you Oliver for this great channel on music and your love of it.

You'd like is this it by the strokes.
I know exactly what you mean when you say that Syro is a source of comfort. The album is almost therapeutic for me, I could be on my way to take a final exam that I didn't study for (or some other stressful event) and I'd probably be completely at ease and comforted if I listened to it.
Glad I'm know the only one!

They were so amazing in concert. Sure they were playful, but professional to a fault.
So glad that Ire Works is one of your favorite albums, as it is one of mine as well. Incredibly blistering, yet blissful album. Dillinger is awesome.
Thank you so much for creating theese videos - you gave me more than a few new artists to discover! Cheers !
