  • These are edited extracts from the original television transmission of 'The Art of Conducting' and feature three great 20th century maestros: Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski. The contributors include violinists Hugh Bean and Yehudi Menuhin, musicologist Hans Keller, conductors Sir Georg Solti and Mariss Jansons, record producer Richard Mohr, composer and conductor Oliver Knussen, and clarinetist Jack Brymer. The complete original programme dates from 1993, so due to its age these excerpts are uploaded here under 'fair use' terms and conditions. Note: The contributions in this section from Hans Keller, Mariss Jansons and Oliver Knussen were omitted from the subsequent commercial DVD release.

Toscanini is one of the Terror conductor even today. I love him and Admired him the most. Believe me or not, He's pretty quiet sensitive. And lastly, They obeyed him time by time.

An orchestra now must be persuaded, not terrorized.

I am in the extreme Furtwangler camp. I have listened to many of those Toscanini NBC broadcast performances and they are not as "precise" as people claim them to be. The myth of Toscanini's "precision" is overstated.
If therefore precision was not always achieved but there is also not the Innigkeit offered by Furtwangler (especially in German music) what then?
There are many conductors in addition to Furtwangler that I prefer to Toscanini, incuding Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer, Hans Knappertsbusch and even Karajan. All of them offer more than just "come scritto". Many of them also offer as much precision as Toscanini, perhaps even more. Walter and Karajan in particular.
