This is fantastic. It aired one year before I was born. It is interesting. to hear the repeated references to "his men" in the orchestra. It is gratifying to reflect on my recent attendance at the symphony where at least half of the musicians were female, and the leading violinist or pianist, female. I feel gratitude that indeed, humankind is progressing.

As a little girl and violin student in New York City, I watched many of his programs, assuming that only men could conduct or play in a great orchestra. This was the only drawback of Bernstein's wonderful tv broadcasts, and it still pains me to see how it was back then. Fortunately, my generation of women broke through, slowly but steadily - and with much resistance from the men!

That caught my attention... the way he talks about "the men" or "a hundred men" in the orchestra.😢
I'm so glad this has changed over the years!
Success to you and to all the incredible talented women musicians out there in the world. Music is like air, essential to all of us, to our lives, and women make music so beautifully❤

The energy and physical fitness of a conductor is also essential, though not mentioned. Lenny is one of my heroes.

It's certainly of its time. An all male orchestra and Lenny assuming that all conductors are male.

Why doesn’t he mention the most important… the conductor (well this one anyway) must have an ego the size of a galaxy.
