  • Dr. Dray's What I Eat in a Work Day. Clean eating or orthorexia?
In this video I critique what Dr Dray eats in a day. Is this a form of clean eating and healthy eating or another form of orthorexia?

She comes from a ballet background, and you know that’s a training ground for eating disorders. I think it would be interesting to calculate the total calories she consumed and subtract it from 2000 calories.

She thinks it’s okay because of the volume of food. It’s a great anorexia trick I know myself. She shouldn’t promote this. When I was an obese 14 year old terrified of going from middle school to high school I fasted (50-zero calories daily) for a whole summer. I drank 2-4 litters of diet soda daily and lots of coffee black or just a teaspoon of non dairy creamer. I dropped from 220 pounds to about 150. Then I couldn’t keep it up and eventually got fat then in my 20s did 500 calories a day for months while exercising 4 hours a day and again dropped a ton of weight…, and then got fat again. Now I’m 50. I’ve had 300 or less calories a day for the last 5 days… eating disorders are such a curse

@@KevinBurciaga Nope you don't, it will just be a mediocre level of health and not the optimal one. Most of these vegans fail because of too much high glycemic foods, high fructose/sugar, lots of anti nutrients like oxalates, phytates in their vegetable of choice. Even the grains you mention are frequently eaten by vegans and are high in glyphosates. She could've added high quality poultry and fish, reduce some of the veggies and her diet would be close to optimal though.

Her skincare advice is awesome.

Also you can notice a lot of raw vegetables. Which is good sometimes, but you won’t digest a lot of vitamins from a raw broccoli or cauliflower. That type of vegetables are more easily digested when they are cooked a bit. Plus they all contain vitamins that need fat/oil to be absorbed.
And this choice of raw vegetables looks like a diet that requests more energy/calories for the body to metabolise these products than if they are stewed/grilled/boiled…

I think your insight to her needing to eat specialty food was fascinating. Very perceptive! One of Dray’s less remarked upon habits is her use of a bib when she eats. Lots of disordered eaters use this kind of security blanket to create a barrier between themselves and their food. She’s obviously very troubled and I hope she fully recovers one day. Her fans come guns blazing for anyone who points out the obvious - that she looks unwell and sickly. Yes, her skincare advice is sound but she’s putting up footage of her workouts and meals. She’s the one who put her body and health center stage. Dray is the now pumping her face full of fillers in an attempt to look less gaunt & healthy. I would say the fillers as a way to achieve a healthy look are akin to how you described her diet “woefully insufficient”.

Definitely she gained some weight although who knows, she could have had filler as well. Although she is still thin, if you directly compare, she has gained. I don’t think it’s impossible that she didn’t just gain weight.

I used to have an eating disorder and I still struggle with disordered eating and I was stunned when I saw this video not yours I actually saw Abby sharps first but then I start to watch some of Dr. Dray's content and it's not just the eating it's also the exercise, and other odd behaviors she's located in Houston where it's extremely hot on and she says she's wearing layers for some protection which makes sense she's a dermatologist but so does wearing sunscreen wearing fall layers and not just like covering up with a layer is also a way that people lose weight or a lot of wrestlers do it on lotta people with eating disorders do it a lot of our fighters do it to drop weight it's a popular tactic so I definitely do not think you are seeing things add all she counts out popcorn kernels for her monthly half a cup a cup popcorn on the oils counts out always on huge huge cups of coffee multiple diuretics multiple salads with zero dressing actually there's no oil in her diet at all all I can go on and on just writing this is reminding me of all the activities I used to do when I was at the height of my eating disorder that was something so hard to break and also at the beginning of every one of her videos she starts it off by working out and selling that and that's just her morning warm-up she also works out a second time every day it's all a very very bad and troubling picture and she's also someone who goes around kind of fear mongering certain ingredients in skin care products like fragrance which is very but nine for 95% of people, Yet is unwilling to look at herself it's something so so dangerous she also spoken about her extensive hair loss which is also another big sign of an ED is you lose a ton of hair and she said she got it back by buy this really expensive hair regrowth helmet and she grew her hair really long but all of that is it normal behavior it's scary really, Also what is even more scary and even bring it up does it look like someone who could run 5 miles in the scary thing is she does run like 2 to 5 miles every night and that's her second workout of the day, she looks like I looked when I had an eating disorder and also when I had a severe drug problem which fed into my eating disorder I use stimulants because they made me not hungry I also did a lot of the things you mentioned seltzer water I didn't like the taste of diet soda I really liked regular Coke it was one of the only cheats I gave myself but if I had a regular Coke I didn't have anything else the entire day it was like my once a week like weekend snack or like gift to myself which is so sad, but the Perrier I had drank that religiously and she does go to these like highly specialized like online markets and yes she does go to Costco but it's surrounded by all these other really high end options she doesn't even shop at Trader Joe's like I love Trader Joe's as someone who had an eating disorder and now is the one who is past me eating a drug issues although I still struggle but I'm over them for the most part, well I still struggle sometimes with disordered eating but not with the rest of it, but even she thinks she's above Trader Joe's it's all very strange and also she harps a lot in her videos about the price of like skincare products and beauty products and stuff like that yet as you mentioned she says in the amount of money on this very specific and unhealthy diet of hers

How can a person be healthy on a virtually fat free diet? Fats are needed for hormone production. Also, she consumes copious quantities of caffeine-which is a diuretic-which pulls sodium and potassium out of the body….yet she vigorously avoids sodium in her diet. This can’t be good for adrenal health! Then, her food choices are dangerously high in oxalates. A high oxalate diet can cause eczema, arthritis, digestive issues, and other health problems.

Not being hungry in the morning is common when you were using a cup of coffee as an appetite suppressant!
Health practitioners are trained not just in recording clinical symptoms but observing clinical signs. And the signs of ED And lack of nutrition are clear such as cachexia and pallor are clear to see - with the obvious interfering with weight gain this ‘day in the life’ is like a manual for ED, not good for vulnerable younger viewers. I’m sad for her because I feel she needs help, but I also don’t think she should have such a platform. She needs specialist support.
PS Magnesium could be taken any time of day because as well as its use as a muscle relaxant at bedtime, magnesium is essential for our ATP energy production. which is probably why she needs to take it in the morning, to help her get through the day.

I agree with you 100%. As a wholefoods plant-based eater myself, I know the importance of having balanced nutrition. The diet she showed in this video is not healthy wholefoods, plant-based nutrition. It's woefully unbalanced as you indicated. No fat, no protein, no wholefood carbs, etc. etc. The proof of the pudding is how she appears. She looks skeletal, bones are jutting out all over the place. Her skin looks pasty, not just untanned because of sunblock or staying out of the sun. A white complexion that looks healthy normally has a glow and some pink in the cheeks. The pink is indicative of healthy blood flow and oxygen in the skin. I'm commenting because I'm concerned for her. I also think that as a doctor, it's incumbent upon her to set an example of good health. Her skin care videos are very informative. But I was watching one and she looked so bad that I couldn't believe she had no awareness of how she looked. I'm not trying to be mean; however, I find it hard to watch her anymore because of the lack of insight into her own health she appears to have.

Yeah... she does seem obsessive about it but I really don’t think it has to do with calories but the idea that eating these foods will give her glowing skin and a long life... it’s it skewed thinking? Sure... but I don’t think she’s promoting the ANA lifestyle to her fan base and it seems like you’re making a lot of assumptions based on your own history.... you’re projecting. After I stopped using opiates and got help, every time I’d seeing a person who looked sleepy or out of it I’d think “opiate addict!!!”... some of the times I was right b to many times I was wrong.

It’s interesting videos about other peoples’ diets are even made, where we all speculate about what the person is eating and why, when it’s really none of our business and could be doing more harm to what a person may already be experiencing. If someone wants to starve themselves, or eat super healthily, or spend a ton of money on low calorie food, so be it. If you want to do healthy eating why not just use what she eats and do a eat this not that for healthy vegan food... why pick apart everything... like the fact she doesn't want warm oatmeal when she lives in texas..
She also states she is not a nutritionist in the video.... I see nurses and doctors that are obese, smoke, drink and do other unhealthy stuff all the time... like I said these videos are boardline bullying and not helpful IMHO

She did look severely underweight (in and around 2017), likely anorexic. Though her diet has flaws, she was really onto something with the vinegar! Strong research, summarized well in Dr. Michael Greger books, proved that women who ate at least 5 times a week a portion of salad dressing with vinegar (and olive oil) had half the risk of fatal heart attacks than women who didn't use vinegar. Also, people who drink about 3 cups of coffee per day (even decaffeinated!) have a proven up to 30% more life expectancy/less risk of death due to all death causes than people who drank less coffee. Also, her diet includes a lot of great components to boost autophagy and AMPK, which prolong quality of life and life span in humans. I think her protein ratio might be low, haven't mentally calculated all her meals intake. Also, eating rice is not the wisest of choices in foods, as its nutritional profile is low, it only spikes insulin, and it's a bunch of carbohydrates without any benefits really. She could eat a lot of healthy & tasty things instead of rice that could bring her protein intake up as well as fill her stomach/satiate her more.

I don’t think it’s healthy in any way to speculate on what mental illness somebody has that you do not know. What are your credentials? What qualifications do you have to diagnose someone or speculate on what ED somebody has. To comment on her appearance as being indiciative of what someone who has Orthorexia has has the implication that you’re projecting a mental illness onto her that you don’t even know she has? Symptoms of orthorexia include thinking critically of others who don’t follow the same diet, avoiding social events that include food. Losing activities as one is solely focused on their eating. Have u found evidence for these symptoms? No. It’s fine to say that her eating habits are unhealthy but to label her with a severe mental disorder is reckless and dangerous as it encourages people to do the same who are not trained in any way to provide such diagnoses.

    • @KevinBurciaga
      @KevinBurciaga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@KevinBurciaga exactly as I said it’s completely fine to discuss that her behaviour and mannerisms aren’t healthy. But you are essentially implying she might have a disorder which needs a diagnosis and are essentially (purposefully or not) providing said diagnosis since she hasn’t come out and said she has Orthorexia. Anorexia, Orthorexia are all mental diseases and speculating I’f a person has one of these is just reckless, it doesn’t matter that you didn’t implicitly say she has or doesn’t have the disorder. You wouldn’t suggest or imply that someone has BPD or anti-social personality disorder and then pick apart their actions because u understand that these are complex mental illnesses which should never be loosely prescribed to someone on the internet that Youve never met. Same goes for ED’s.

She looks pale because sunlight causes your skin to age and it's her job to have young and healthy skin. Having a tan is having pretty much damaged skin cells. Obviously the average person doesn't need to be that concerned about this but since she's a dermatologist, her skin is priority for her because it shows that she knows what she's talking about. It's like saying "this bodybuilder has way too big muscles, that's not healthy". It's their job and that's how they showcase their knowledge. But I agree that her bodyfat percent is a bit too low for a woman, but if she feels comfortable and has enough energy to do the things she does it should be up to her. Also diet soda might be worse than water but it is better than sugar soda. Pick your poison. And coffee? Most people enjoy coffee doesnt have anything to do with orthorexia lol. If you actually check the food she eats, you will see that she gets pretty satisfied with it and doesn't have to suppress her appitite. All these fibres fill her up enough to the point that she doesn't feel hungry. There are people that generally rather stay lean and carrying fat on their body makes them uncomfortable. Do you consider Jeff from AthleanX orthorexic? No? He is as lean as Dr Dray but obviously carries much more muscle because he is a man.
