I am so glad that I have found your channel! I am studying speech pathology in Germany and it’s super interesting to see how it is in the United States.
    Thank you!😊

Hi, I’m not really a science person and I never did good in my science classes in hs and undergrad. Would always get Cs and Ds because I just never retained the info and memorization... but I really want to do speech pathology... do you think speech pathology is a path for me? I’m terrified because I think I’ll end up failing all the classes and not learn anything

Speech pathology in my experience has only been a little bit of science. Most of the science involved is anatomy and physiology. I don't want to give you the wrong advice since I don't really know your situation, but I would definitely look more into it :)

I think it depends on your program. I’m in the NYU program and our anatomy physiology class is rough. I spend 20 hours a week just studying and about 10 hours of work. Just for that one class. That looks being said, I never thought I was a science person and anatomy is like 90 percent memorizing and understanding the mechanics and the medical language. I almost quit the first week but decided to research methods around active recall. We have literally hundreds of things to memorize each week and so Far I’m keeping up. But it’s ALOT of work. You have to be driven to understand the content. I constantly look to multiple sources to understand different ideas like action potential. I didn’t think I could handle this but now I realized I just needed to learn how to ACTIVELY study. Writing notes won’t help you retain memory. You could always become an slpa and then go to school to become a slp. You might learn better that way. Everyone is different but you have to be driven either way. Do more research! I spent 4 years researching schools/costs etc. good luck!!!

If you’re sure you want to do speech pathology apply to colleges that have an SLP program and apply into the program! You need a bachelor degree first before you can get your masters for SLP

Reagan LeAnna you can also check out asha.org. You can find schools with SLP programs and check out more information on the path to becoming a certified SLP. I'm in grad school now and will be graduating in July. The website has helped a lot. Good luck!

You actually don’t necessarily need a undergraduate degree in SLP. I just got into grad school for SLP with a major in psychology. :) I just have to do some extra pre-req’s!!

Lindseyyy do you think it was better for you to have the psychology BA instead? Like just to have more options just in case or would u have rather majoring in SLP

Lindseyyy wait I’m a psychology BA and I’m interested in SLP grad school-do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

How many anatomy or physiology courses did you have to take. Is it big on science or more on education

Are you able to work while in grad school? Do you think someone would be able to find a job with their bachelors and support themselves in the mean time?

Some grad programs dont allow you to work at all and some only allow 10 hours of work per week so i dont suggest relying on working a 40 hpir a week work schedule

I am in grad school for speech pathology and I was able to maintain working 20 hours a week during the school year. It wasn't enough money to pay for everything, but it definitely helped out! I would look into each program to see what they recommend.
