      Hi, thank you for speaking about your experience as a introverted person. I am also very shy and awkward at social skills, and I have ASD. But I’m still very interested in helping people and wanting to study SLP. Would you like to update or share your progress or current feelings about SLP?

    So true my great Aunt is dying of a stroke. I have enrolled to be a speech pathologist. I am ok but the nurses were so upset as the swallowing test did not pick up major swallowing issues. As soon as I said I was a prospective speech pathology student. They saw me as a source of comfort. I told them that they were doing a good job but she misses her husband and never recovered. Nurses really love speech pathologists because when we do swallowing tests we have the patient’s life in our hands. So we get how scary it is to have someone’s life in your hands. I felt so happy that I was able to be a source of comfort to them. Such a great profession.

    I recently decided to leave nursing school during my last year to pursue speech language pathology. Part of the reason was the insane stress nurses go through everyday and having people’s lives in our hands..I was wondering if stress is a big part of a speech language pathologists life?? Obviously some stress is good but not the amount I was experiencing as a nurse..This video was super helpful btw! You have a very soothing voice so it was easy to listen to and very informative!! 😅

    • @jessicaizzo5113
      @jessicaizzo5113  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Blank I would say the amount of stress shouldn’t be as much as a nurse! The only time an SLP may experience that stress is if they’re working in a medical setting since they do technically have someone’s life in their hands when doing swallowing therapy. But as as SlP there are so many different options and settings so you don’t have to focus on swallowing therapy if that’s not what you want to do! 😌

    I think I really wanna to be a speech pathologist! But I need to pray and ask god if this is the right path and I can relate to the kids because I have a IEP and had to take speech. But I worry because of having that if I may struggle with pronunciation of certain words lol.

      Yogiagurl I think a lot of people get speech as a child! I know a lot of people that got speech therapy when they were younger and are flourishing now as adults :) but it really depends on the person and the situation of course, but do not let the fact that you had speech as a kid stop you! You can do anything you set your mind to I think :)

    In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of choosing SLP as a career as opposed to going into something like psychology or medicine? The reason I’m comparing them is that I consider all 3 to be “helping professions” in the sense of having that direct impact, so I was wondering if you could touch on why SLP stood out to you as the field that you ultimately decided to go into (if you ever considered anything else like those other careers I mention)? I’m also wondering about this career in terms of licensing procedures and how difficult/easy it would be to move from one country to another as an SLP professional compared to the other careers I mentioned. Thanks!

    I spent most of my life trying to find trades careers not finding anything that I felt passionate about. It wasn't until I spent time volunteering and promoting a children charity I realized my passion and skillset is talking to people and any time that I do something for someone even something small that helps someone or gives them a positive experience they wont forget I absolutely love that. School seems like a daunting thing since im a 36 year old with just a G.E.D and the pre-requisites seem high and it could be such a competitive program to get into. Do you have any advice or anecdotes for a mature student such as myself?

      Hi! I just got my degree in Speech Pathology and I wouldn’t consider myself to be very good at science but I made it through!! I think what’s so great about the science aspect of this major is that it’s all applicable and based on real life concepts. It’s not all about memorizing science formulas or incorporating math. You do need a mandatory science course (either physics or chem) to be ASHA certified. But overall the major courses in Speech are not so scary! What I like is that there is so many study guides available online for the speech science classes, quizlets really saved my life :)
