@@GoodGuysCarry I dont know how you see these things... but if you live in a society you already follow endless ammount of rules every single day. If you think that being able to carry a knife, or a gun, makes you somehow prevail/go over that line from unfree to free....I dont see it that way at all.

That old Buck 110 I used to carry in high school back in the 70's/80's. Lost it somewhere along the line. Was telling my late wife about carrying it and she surprised me with a new one. I made a double open top sheath for it and my multi tool and now carry them both every day. Tried to get the grandson and all to carry at least something. But it hasn't on for them yet. I wholeheartedly agree Men AND Women both. so useful to have on you. and a tiny but bright flashlight. Watched a few of your video's and decided to sub. Looking forward to more video's.

This is a very informative video. When I was working for an oil company, I was a troubleshooter for 220 miles of gasoline/diesel pipeline. I caried a Swiss army knife. It became a very handy tool for many uses.
My son use to make knives. I have two of his. One is a hunting skinning knife made with 440 stainless steel and coco bolo handles. The other is made with an old primary chain of my Harley that he beat into a bar of steel in his forge, and then made a knife blade also with coco bolo wood handles.
I use to carry it along with the Swiss army knife. I still carry a small version Swiss army knife in my pocket. It is a fairly compact knife with 2 blades, a reamer, a cork screw, a bottle opener with a screw driver end, and a can opener.
I also carried a line mans knife for working on wire and cable as all our pump stations were powered by 2400 volt electric motors. I know, 2400 volt electric motors pumping 1400 pounds of pressure on gasoline! You just don't make any mistakes. I did it for 26 years, and I am 84. I always felt like God was watching over my shoulder as I worked alone most of the time.

The reason you stated at the beginning is very similar to our philosophy when sailing, you MUST have a knife that can be accessed quickly with one hand. It is a distinct possibility that, especially in heavy weather, you can get tangled in a piece of line. There are many instances where people have cut themselves free, even when being pulled underwater, sometimes by their safety harness. I ALWAYS carry a one handed pocket knife and use it several times a day. I have learned to disregard signs at establishments “discouraging” concealed carry. My argument is that unless they have armed guards to protect me, I need to protect myself.

I always carry a pocket knife, a small flashlight, and a leatherman on my waist as a truck driver. The pocket knife comes in handy with preparing food or any other generic cutting needs. The leatherman I use to cut open trailer seals and replacing air seals on the glad hands. Plus having the serrated blade in that leatherman would allow me to cut my self out of my seatbelt in an emergency. Now the flashlight I mean I work in the dark just as much in the day it’s good to have a good light on you.

Wear a AAA or rechargeble keychain light on a cord around my neck. So often useful for looking into dark corners, draws or boxes in a shed, details or serial numbers under vehicles, or walking home if caught out after dark.
On an adjustable cord it can be held in the teeth or looked around the hat and allowed to rest on the brim of the hat as a head-torch.

I make fixed-blade knives, but I carry a folder. I've carried the same one every day for more than 30 years - a single-blade all-steel Zippo pocketknife made in Bradford, PA. I've used it as a knife, pick, screwdriver, hammer, pry-bar, and to stir my coffee and the odd Manhattan. Pack it in my luggage when flying. I had to hand it over to the security folks at the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Centre when visiting NYC ten years ago, but I did sneak it in to the Eiffel Tower and a few other places. It's a little worn but I keep it sharp, and it's as tight and tough as the day it was made. When I eventually assume room temperature, my son will add it his collection. It's not the nicest knife I own, but it's far and away the most heavily used one.

I also carry a Kershaw Blackout that is on its second blade, which I have had for twenty-five plus years on the strong side cliped in my pocket.. The Blackout is spring assist, which opens really as quickly as a swichblade. I have always carried some form of knife since I was certified by my Cub Scout Den Mother back in the early seventies. Yes, as a kid I carried all the way up thru high school, it really wasn't a problem back then as long as you weren't stupid with it. Great selection of knives you have. Thanks for sharing.

I just stumbled across your video and took the time to listen to what you had to say. You have a nice assortment of quality knives there. In my opinion, there are what I classify as "gas station knives" then there are good knives. I've been buying knives since the 3rd grade and now I am probably close to your age. You would think that by nbow I would have enough knives but every once in a while one pops up that I just have to have. I had the privilege to meet knife maker Dan Harrison a few years ago at the shop he had in Ben Wheeler, Texas. I bought a couple of his fixed blade knives that I will always treasure. When I first met Dan, I had no idea of how important of a knife maker he was. He was so humble that I was quite surprised when I looked him up and found out how special of a guy he really was. Merry Christmas to you and thanks for your video.

An option I like for a fixed blade knife sheath is what the bushcraft crowd calls a dangler: just a leather loop that goes over your belt, with a metal ring that attaches to the knife sheath belt loop. This just adds a swivel point so you can sit in the truck or in the saddle and the knife isn’t digging into your side and is easier to get to.

I live in NW MT and the first thing I do after putting on my pants is put my knife in the right pocket. Usually a Spyderco. Years ago, I went to Chicago and didn't think about having my knife on me. Its not a weapon but a tool in MT. I pulled it out to cut a sandwich in a park and the person I was with screamed "What are you doing thats a concealed weapon... you'll get arrested." IN Chicago, 1.0" is the max legal size. When I got back I was in my local PO and a sheriffs deputy was there also. I got a package and pulled out my knife to open the package. The deputy looked over and saw my knife, then he said, "What kind of knife is that?" I folded it up and handed it to him, he liked it and said he would have to get one like it. It is an essential part of living out here. There is always something to cut, open, etc. BTW the Spyderco is one rugged knife. I can't tell you how many times, I have dug out rocks, pried this or that and they still lock solid with zero blade wiggle. Not so great on the edge, but they sharpen well too. Also BTW recently I bought a Milwaukee knife, just on a lark. It opens with one hand easier than any knife I have ever used, and as fast as an automatic knife. The blade holds and edge and it also holds tight after a lot of use. PLUS it was $24.00. I bought four for less than the price of one Spyderco. Just a thought.

in addition to my pocket knife. In my personal opinion the fixed blade length never needs to be more than 4 inches the exception would be a knife for fishing (filet knife).
The last point of my rambling is to purchase the best knife you can afford; a knife that won't hold an edge is worthless. Thanks for the video.

Sharp video. (Sorry, but I couldn’t resist.) I agree that everyone should carry at least a small pocketknife whenever possible. I was hunting pronghorn near Buffalo, Wyoming when my step son shot a nice buck right at the end of legal shooting light. We prepared to dress the buck when he realized he left his kill kit in the truck. When I took my kill kit out my pack and opened it, I dumped the contents on the ground and couldn’t find my knife in the thick sagebrush. Thankfully, I had a freshly sharpened Case Trapper in my pocket and he used it to dress the buck. I was able to find my knife the next day, but this just proved a pocket knife always earns its keep. Again, great video on a great subject.

Always fun to chat about knives, Dewayne. When working I always carried a knife with at least 4” blade. I have quite a few, but my favorite is a Benchmade 940, an Osborne, reverse tanto design. When horseback, i clipped it to the front of my shirt, for the accessibility you talked about when wearing chaps. I don’t need a knife like that very often anymore, but I always have one on me. My daughter gave me a small, Spyderco Dragonfly for Father’s Day and I like it. Only a 2” blade, but it’s hellish sharp, clips to a pocket, and opens with one hand. One thing I don’t like in a knife is a partially serrated blade, I want the entire length of the blade to be sharpened steel. Good show, thanks.

Here in Australia, stockmen traditionally wore a separate belt with knife sheaths (one bigger pocket knife, one smaller for castrating), and a lighter or pocketwatch sheath stitched into it. These knives are horizontal on the belt.
Appreciate the fixed blade insight in an urgent situation.
Some people have their sheaths stitched to their pants belt but can be a struggle getting through the pants rings.
Some people wear a hobble belt with pocket knife sheath stitched in. The issue though, is when you hobble your horse you then lose your knife and your belt in one. That was enough to convince me...
    Thanks for the video.

I've heard of a few ranchers that carry fixed blades, but most of them have an aversion to getting the hilt in the ribs if/when they fall off their horse, so you mostly just see folders. A small fixed blade, scout style on the belt is fine, but anything else is in the truck, the barn, or carried when on foot. The ones I like the most outside are the small blade and big handles (for big hands), like the Boker Mini Bronco. When it gets colder out, the metal handled knives go into storage until it warms up again.
I have a bunch of sheepsfoot shaped blades myself, similar to that one you have made in Texas. They were originally designed for sailors to not accidentally stab each other and themselves on a rocking ship when they're working.

In my 70's and having much experience with knives (military and civilian) I will opt for a fixed blade every time.
However, the sheath must have a retention strap and a pocket for a sharpening stone.
I like High Carbon Steel and do not find it difficult to keep from rusting but is easy to sharpen.
Lastly, I like a knife that fits my hand with a glove on and the blade is one inch longer than the handle.

One reccomendation I would make, if you buy a pocket knife, make sure to buy one that locks. I had a swiss army knife, and because the blade on those don't lock, i was using it and the blade folded and cut my index finger on the knuckle down to the bone. Thankfully, there was no permanent damage, and my finger healed fine, other than the scar it left, but that's why I share this, so you don't have that happen to you.

Very nice video and I agree a lot with you. I'm only 41 but I feel like i'm going on 81 unfortunately due to Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis but I grew up on a small farm and was raised that you carried your tools with you, and a knife or a firearm were often part of those tools. I carried a Buck Crosslock from 1994 until I switched to a Buck 110 in 2014 and it was a one hand open/close so I understand very well where you are coming from about carry it clipped in your front pocket. While I didn't ride a horse, I road an ATV, we just called em' Fourwheelers , and I lost it out of my front pocket multiple times riding. Luckily, I was able to backtrack and locate it on the trails. I carried it in school because I was in the FFA and shop classes but I never took it out of my pocket or bag till I was out doing things where I needed it. Whenever I was hunting I also carried a Buck Vanguard fixed blade of sometimes a OKC SP-2 that I picked up in I think 95, but not as often as the other. Now adays, I'm unfortunately listed among the "Disabled" due to short term memory issues and fatigue so I don't work anymore (I was actually in Computers after changing majors in College from Forestry and Wildlife Management because I knew there weren't enough positions in that field for me to get a job reliably) so when I'm not feeling exhausted or whatever from daily chores, I will work on all kinds of things, I'm a "Jack of all trades, Master of None or few". I have to many hobbies and projects because my brain never stops thinking of new things to make or modify. But, back to the point, Yes, I carry a lot of different knives these days be it a Case Stockman or Victorinox Pioneer X, or many others from day to day and what I carry from the moment I get up till I go to bed changes based on what I have planned for that day.
I also have my concealed Carry permit (Not needed anymore where I'm at but I already had it so.. ), and I tend to carry a 1911 as well even though I do have other things. Being a bigger guy, it's easy for me to hide even a full sized government model but I have the CS model as well. Before I started walking with a cane, I often liked to carry a fixed blade knife in a "Scout Carry" on my back. Being right handed, I had it to draw with my left in case someone was to grab my right hand/arm if they went for my gun. You might try making a sheath for one of yours that way. I understand reality being limited on your person when you carry. But yes, you carry the tool you need and that might change from moment to moment and if it does, you'll probably come up with a way to carry it like a bag or something.
I look forward to watching more of your videos! I hope you the best!

Nice, I carry what you call a buckaroo knife in a slant scabbard its only 7 inches long very light and I wear it everywhere. I wear it on my left side and the handle points forward. It has a nice Damascus sharp blade about 4 inches long. I had a crisis in the Wind Rivers a few years back where my pack horse panicked and fell down the hill and I had to cut the lead rope. It probably saved the horse's life. As well and everything in the pack. Since then I always have it with me. I carry my XDM elite 4.5 10mm on my right side or in a chest holster. It holds 16 +1 so if I need another mag it goes in a pocket or saddle bag. My problem is wearing chaps and keeping everything in place so I can get to it. Great video thanks for sharing it with us.

Always carry a subtle folding knife in my pocket. I rarely need one in my day-to-day and it's illegal for me to even carry. Still, my grandpa always carried one, my father did (and does) and now I do. I consider it a bit of a tradition, and a knife is certainly one of those traditional accessory tools to carry. I don't usually *need* a watch or lighter either, but they're convenient little things to have on you at times.
Hell, my father had been trying to make do with an old folder that didn't work well anymore and I got him something new a few years ago. Easily the most appreciated gift he's gotten in quite some years. I give the thing some thorough maintenance once or twice a year and I see his eyes light up each time he gets it back .

"Carrie a pocket knife of some kind" is exactly what my father said to me about age 14 or so. And I still do to this day carry a pocket knife, many years later. Great to hear it said again!
