I love how deep and crunchy the guitar tone is in the chorus 🤯
And the solo is fire.
Disturb's version of this song made it palatable to me, and that guitar tone is one of the reasons. Genesis and Phil Collins do have talent, but I never personally liked this song.
Lex is phenomenal with her analysis. two different tongues tasting the same candy bar that is simply brilliant!.
really needed the actual music video for this one.
There is a slight difference in lyrics between the two versions, in the verse that goes "I remember long ago, when the sun was shining, and all the stars were bright all through the night, and the sound of your laughter as I held you tight," while Distrubed's version goes "in the wake of this madness as I held you tight." Thi suggests the Genesis version has a touch of nostalgia, remembering simpler times and the way things were better back when, while Distrubed's choice of wording suggests a feeling of losing hope, feeling overwhelmed. Which lends itself to Lex's vibe of similar position/goals, but different perspectives. Kinda like MLK and Malcom X (or at least the public perception of them). You could say MLK was the Genesis version, wanting a change, wanting a better world, but from a more introspective mindset of "look at ourselves. What can we change about ourselves to make the world better," whereas Malcom would be the Disturbed version. Same "end goal" of bringing about change and a better world, but wit ha more aggressive vibe of "look around; what do we have to burn down and destroy so that we can have a better world." Genesis sang the lines about "these are the hands we're given" with a tone that suggested reaching out, building up, working together. Meanwhile Disturbed's rendition of those same lines carries the imagery of fists raised in rebellion, revolution, destruction.

I agree, but when u watch the music video by disturbed, its more of a " what do we have to do to survive in such a broken world rue by too much power". Yes u are correct on ur analysis, but the video also provides other factors into the playing field

The way I see it the original is like "yeah that kind of world would be nice, maybe someday" where as the Disturbed version is like "No, we need to make it better now or miss our chance."
The official video for this is Amazing.
This is a more aggressive version of the same message because we have gone 20-30 years and not fixed it yet.
Distrubed cover songs are great. Love this cover of the Genesis song. They're cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song "The Sound of Silence" is my favorite

The original as Lex says is about coming together and healing the world this one is about how we failed to and now we have to come together to fight the evil that snuck into power. Awesome reaction as usual, love and hugs to all.

Exactly this. I have often heard the analogy with sound of silence that the first was a warning and Disturbed's was anger that the warning was ignored. Very similar here.

Lex and Brad have good discussions about this and are right. Genesis version was an '80s pop prog rock and song about the Cold War (1947-1991) at the time. Russia, East Germany, North Korea, , Middle Eastern countries, Cuba, China .....Eastern Bloc against the USA, UK, Canada, France, Japan, South Korea, etc, Western Bloc. Nuclear threat/tension, war, etc. Potential for WW III.

Disturbed has done some of the best covers out there, from shout 2000 covering tears for fears, to ishfwilf ( i still haven't found what I'm looking for) by U2, to living after midnight by Judas priest, and this one also doesn't disappoint! Those are too in my book and definitely worth a listen!!

This is a great cover! You need to check out their cover of Tears For Fears’ song Shout! I’m usually the guy who crucifies people who remake my 80s tunes but Disturbed did a great job with this one, Shout, and Sound of Silence. I also liked Marilyn Manson’s remakes of Tainted Love and Sweet Dreams.
You should check out some of Distrub's newer songs like "A Reason to Fight' and "Hold onto Memories" and make sure to watch their ACTUAL music videos

I am Japanese. By the way I happened to see your channel on TH-cam. Disturbed is one of my favorite artists. I am happy that their activities have been revived🤩🤩
A good example for Lex's point would be Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. For NIN, the song was about depression and a younger man. For Johnny Cash, it was about the end of an old man's life. Same song but two different meanings. But for Land of Confusion, it felt like both artists had to same point to get across, but used different types of songs to do it.

You need to open the Genesis rabbit hole and jump down it; you’ll find some incredible mix of music from 70’s Prog Rock to 80’s Pop Rock….
when you think that the original from 86' and this one from 2005 so around 20 years later give you the same impression but in a more modern version of rock music and the thematic is still accurate at the time still today we live in chaos^^

Disturbed’s output can’t touch Genesis’, but I have to say they have bettered the original version here. Hats off to them. The feel they give the song is better suited

If you look at the cover of Disturbed's first album "The Sickness" you will see the exact moment "The Guy" was born....like literally the exact moment he came out of his mother
Great cover! The original by Genesis has one of the trippiest videos ever made.
You really need to watch the animated music video for this. Unbelievable and adds even more context. This is also the first time in which their mascot "The Guy" is fully featured.
When you do a cover like this, might be cool to view the original too to see how they are improved/diminished.
Also, if you saw the Disturbed video for this song, it's actually quite creative, and acts as a good backdrop to the music.
They usually do these reactions in a stream and then cut up the reactions for the videos later. They might be able to do a cover stream where they will do that though could be interesting but they might know the original already like in this case.
Take a sec and check before suggesting, they have already reacted to genesis version. When listening to a reaction like this, might be cool to see if they've covered the original :)

Around the time this version came out, somebody had meshed the Genesis video with Disturbed's audio version of Land Of Confusion. So you had the Genesis video playing with the Distrubed audio version. Don't know if it's still on TH-cam, but I liked that somebody did that.

I get what Lex was trying to say about the differences in the versions. The two "characters" are envisioning the same world but the pop/rock Genesis version is hopeful and trying to inspire change while the hard rock Disturbed character is angry and is shouting for change. So glad I hit the vape before watching this. Good job guys!

Disturbed is good at covering a song but making it have a different meaning... they did that with the sound of silence which was an amazing cover

The same idea is portrayed as the original but this one comes at it with a bit more anger at this dysfunctional world. That's how I took it.
I don't know about if the two characters have a different vision for the end goal of the better world, but the vibes I get from the two songs is that they have radically different plans for how to go about *getting to* that better world. The original is, maybe, a popular young politician, going about changing the world through the official channels. Disturbed's version is more like the leader of an uprising or revolution.

Think it was originally done by Tears For Fears in 1985. Obviously it's a cover, but disturbed knock it right out of the ballpark I think.

Disturbed needs to write their own music
Loved both versions but this one to me really drives home the point of standing up for ourselves more than the original, the original kinda came across more silly and fun where this one you could feel the seriousness of the lyrics more, other songs you guys need to experience that follow a somewhat similar vibe are Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics which were part of Genesis before Phil Collins went solo and All you zombies by the Hooters, I grew up on this stuff and what all these songs were about back then is our reality today
Just to be clear, Adam, re your Mike and the Mechanics comment, Genesis did something no other band I know of has done: in the eighties and early nineties, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks all had independent projects they wanted to pursue, but they all liked playing as Genesis, as well. So what they did was record a Genesis album (Genesis), tour, split up to do solo projects, tour, and then reform as Genesis. They made another album (Invisible Touch), toured, split to do solo projects, toured, came back as Genesis, and so on. In this way, they were always happy to collaborate and co-write Genesis songs, while never feeling stifled as individuals. Maybe they decided to do it this way after Peter Gabriel left, because Gabriel felt he couldn't express himself fully within Genesis.

I feel like the Genesis version came from the perspective of someone saying; "c'mon everyone, let's try to change the world", but the Dosturbed version is someone screaming for people to get off of their ass and do something.
A big 👍 for Disturbed covering older music that would seem to be outside their genre, then making it their own with a new slant.
I always liked the covers of these great songs that brought out the ugliness and angst that the originals lacked. The best example is Marilyn Manson doing Sweet Dreams. A little distorted guitar and a naked Manson painted black wearing a cowboy hat and riding a pig around, and suddenly the song's meaning is so much more clear.

Disturbs version has more meaning due to the recent and current world we live in, almost prophetic. I think Lex means the song gives a different flavour using the same lyrics with regards to her snickers analogy. 😅
Both of the covers i've heard from Disturbed,,,the other one being Sound of Silence,,,both songs i enjoyed in the original package! I really liked both Disturbed covers,,,both are quite satisfying,,,both are essentially the same song,,,except Disturbed turns up the volume! Its really just that simple,,,more bass,,,,heavier guitar licks,,,more intense vocals,,,it works for me on both levels!
