Therein, Prince Hamlet is pleading for escape from his mortal trappings.
no that's the real ending with the song. we went to see them in San Jose about 5 years ago. OMG it was so lit! We were in the 8th row from the stage . That was the 2nd time I've seen them live - first time was 10 years earlier opening for Queensryche. In the San Jose show 5 yrs ago, they closed with this one and tore the roof off the place. My eyes were glued to the drummer the whole show - most amazing drummer I've ever seen live. And the most epic drumming rig set up Ive ever seen. I first heard this song - I was sitting in my are going in to work, I had no idea who it was and my head was spinning my jaw on the floor. I was late getting back to work from lunch cuz I couldn't shut the song off! I called the radio station to ask who it was, and learned - had never heard of them. I went home that evening and drove by Tower Records and bought their CD. That was 1992.
Check out the song "Home" from the album "Scenes from a memory" It's a concept album intended to be played from beginning to end, and I think it's their best album.
This band brought progressive metal to the forefront at a time when hair metal bands were saturating MTV airplay and the grunge movement was getting ready to rear its head. Every member was/is a virtuoso.
Glad you guys are getting a taste of Dream Theater. Loved this video as well as the one you did for As I Am. You are only scratching the surface of what they can do with these two song choices. Can't wait to see more from you.
What timing, I'm going to see Dream Theater tonight!! I'm very new to them, my dad likes them so I'm going along to the concert with him 😀 (this is also how he got me in to Rush 20 years ago 🤣)
I sill remember hearing this song for the 1st time on the radio and it blowing my mind as it did yours😀 The song that followed this on the radio was Sunless Saturday by Fishbone. How i miss 106.9 WCCC
The KINGS of progressive metal! Every member just as musically talented as the rest and at the top of their game! They sound exactly the same live too - amazing...
James LaBrie is an extraordinary vocalist. I have seen DT many times and am always astounded that the band can be into the intro of a song and then James walks from offstage to the mic and hits the note effortlessly. A truly remarkable vocalist..
Prog rock is about building on an idea and adding flavour to it hence the switch ups or transitions in a song. It's fairly technical to the untrained ear but you both enjoyed it still, which is commendable. Glad your 1st taste at prog rock/metal was a blast. The band does live up to its name from the calibre of music that they've put out there. One of my favorites by them.
I was in a touring band when this came out. Grunge just came out. Weird times. But hearing this the first time was incredible. Great musicians. The guitar/synth solo gets me every time.
So glad you guys loved this song. I listened to this album for years and they really helped stoke my love for prog rock. You two are starting to get it.
The song actually does end that way. If I remember correctly they said they did it to represent the way that life often ends - suddenly and unexpectedly.
When I heard this song the very first time I thought this is best in musicianship and innovation I've ever heard. 30 years later and in regards to groundbreaking new stuff compared to anything afterwards ... this is still my number 1! ABSOLUTELY LOVE how Lex enjoys this :)
I knew Lex would love this Dream Theater song, I'm glad Brad felt it too. It's artistic yet crafted by exceptional musicians. The transitions in the music are seamless and blend because it's envisioned well as they're taking you up and down the sounds of life - like a roller-coaster - the transitions follow the words and melody of the lyrics - message - and are why those transitions exist. You can speak very well with your voice - it's an instrument, yet it's not the only instrument we can relate to in life nor which speaks with us. Every film has a soundtrack for a reason... life itself in our own minds can follow and mirror soundtracks - all emotion may be conveyed through images, words and of course sound.
The most underrated rock bands of all time. Growing up with the hair bands and grunge this band never got the radio play it deserved so I had to buy the images and words cd that I still have in my truck to this day. Lex is going to make a rocker out of Brad yet. Love you guys.
I mentioned this briefly in a super chat. The song chronicles Hamlet and the revenge that Hamlet is taking due to the death of his Father (the king of Denmark). His Father comes back as a ghost and tells Hamlet who did this to him, so Hamlet sets out to avenge his death ("only until your will is done"). Ultimately Hamlet dies himself signified by the abrupt ending. The song mentions specific parts of the play as Hamlet carries out his revenge. I did a college paper on whether or not the ghost was real, as only certain people see him. Also the lyric video is in error at the end. "oh that this to, too solid flesh, would melt" a direct quote from the play.
Lex nailed it. "Tight" is the perfect way to describe Dream Theater. They are all master musicians and their timing is impeccable. I saw them on their last tour and can't wait to see them again.
I've been a dream theater fan for most of my life. I found them in a listening station at a blockbuster music as a kid, and been with them ever since. While i know they aren't for Everyone, most people do recognize how amazing they all are. Dream Theater is a band that is really hard to recommend to people since a lot of people dont want to listen to 6 min+ of an average song. Not only that, but every album is a new masterpiece of compositions that vary in style and music genre within progressive rock/metal.. that i could give a huge list of recommendations to get some diversity in.. but i wont! I'll just mention my favorite track, "Scarred", and favorite Instrumental, "Hell's Kitchen". Thanks for the great videos guys.
Learning to Live, off of the same album, is seriously under rated. Congratulations on trying out DT, you will live them lyrically and musically. Ain't nobody does transitions like DT
Dream Theater singer James LaBrie is a Toronto native the rest New York. Yes very talented guys but a shout out to my friend Rich Chycki, Dream Theater's Engineer. Also a Toronto boy.
That is how it ends for realz. haha. Used to listen to KSJO back in the day who rocked this tune. Was a rather big radio hit for prog rock during its time.
Absolutely up there as one of the best prog metal songs of all time and definitely my favourite song by DT. It's great to see you both go for this and then be delighted by it. It's a classic song and hopefully you'll continue to include prog metal (and "standard" prog rock) in your reactions.
Dream Theatre is not prog rock (Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Styx, Crimson King, Coheed & Cambria, Mars Volta, etc) . They are prog metal ! ( Queensryche, Tool, Fates Warning, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Symphony X, Jinjer, Opeth Lacuna Coil, etc) ! A little heavier. But, close enough lol, yall liked it. Prog is complex and classical music & jazz influenced. DT is a very talented group. They are like Rush meets Metallica. Surprised that this won a poll in the '90s stream (normally ruled by alternative rock, hip hop and alternative dance music), Tool is about the only prog metal band to win in those '90s streams. And maybe Queensryche. lol. You'll need to check out more DT, they are awesome. This song was on the radio a lot back in the '90s and video on MTV, blew many of us away when I was in school when it first hit the airways. Sounded like Iron Maiden on steroids. "Lie" is also another one of their songs that got a lot of radio and MTV time, check that one out, too. And several other songs.
Got introduced to Dreamtheater in 92 bought the CD the following year went to Seattle to see Dreamtheater images and words tour with Galactic Cowboys as the back up absolutely blown away as I've always been a RUSH fan crazy to think i was 29 years old now I'm going on 59 still a Dreamtheater fan the venue was at the Paramount theater killer sound
Thank you so much for reacting to this song! So glad you both liked it! The live (or studio version) of their song Breaking All Illusions would blow you mind! Also the song The Alien is a song off their newest album and they won a Grammy for it would also be a great listen! You guys are great!
Wow, this totally made my day. I know that a lot of fans prefer to listen to their live performances over studio albums, but I love the studio versions of Dream Theater songs so this was a treat for me. And I’m so happy Brad liked it! They have a huge catalog of albums and songs to choose from, but my favorites are the songs off their albums Images and Words (which this song came from) and Awake. You can’t go wrong with this band, though. I love that you just get lost in the music and imagery they bring. And yes, that is the way the song ends but it also transitions right into next one on the album so it doesn’t feel so jarring. If you’re looking for more Dream Theater, I’d love to see you react to “Take the Time” or “Learning to Live” from this album. Or from Awake, there’s “The Mirror” or “Lies” or “Caught in a Web.”
Lex seems like that one person at church that gets those certain feelings that flow threw them and they just have to let it go. Brad is person sitting just there listening to the sermon. Trying to get all he can out of it.
Good to see how Brad & Lex express their ideas about this song, they seem genuinely interested in the genre of metal, and the interesting comments they make about this song. Without being stereotypical, I didn't think they'd be into this type of music, I thought they'd be more into R&B and Rap? but thats not the case, they really understand how metal music comes together. I'm very impressed, keep up the good work Brad and Lex.
Great reaction . So glad BOTH of you liked it. This is a must see band. Their level of musicianship and technically is top shelf. Please shoot footage if you make it to a performance. Take care guys.
When I heard this on the radio in 1992, when I was only 16, I immediately fell in love with the band, and they've been my favorite band since then. I've seen them live 4 times, and let all them except the original keyboarding on this album, Kevin Moore, and the new drummer Mike Mangini, who has been in the band since 2011. I was in a band that covered this song in 1995. Y'all should check out my favorite dream theater song, Learning to live. And yes, that's how the song ends. Haha!! It always catches people off guard.
Never have I clicked so fast on one of your videos. Lol I love seeing people exposed to Dream Theater for the first time! The Count of Tuscany is another long insane Dream Theater song
The "tight strings" sound you are referring to is mainly due to the amplifier he used, which was a Mesa Boogie amp, and very similar to the amp Metallica was using around that time.
This album is amazing. From beginning to end. The drummer, MIke Portnoy, is now playing in Sons of Apollo with Billy Sheenan, Bumblefoot and Jeff Scott Soto. Check them out, incredible band.
@@Frostrazor maybe technically better, but Portnoy has better feel. Mangini is an excellent drummer and the things he can do are astounding, but just lacks a bit of soul, comes off more robotic
Sons of Apollo is great. They were my last concert before Covid shut down everything, with Tony MacAlpine opening. Tony came on stage with SoA to do a cover of “Burn” by deep purple that was amazing
This was epic on Guitar Hero. They are an amazing group. I remember on the video for this on Guitar Hero your on a ship in the sky and there are these giant eagles flying with you lol.
When I saw the thumb nail I thought this may be too much for Brad but I was wrong. He really gets it now, It takes time to develop a ear for this music and its complexity. Thats the real end and they do that live too. All this album is awesome, there`s not a bad song on it.
11:28 so the transition in the beginning you guys really liked was making use of syncopation (stressing the up beats instead of down beats) with the snare drum and then switching back which is probably a big reason why you liked it. During the chorus just before the instrumental section, Portnoy (the drummer) is hitting the snare on each down beat. So if you count the music 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1..., you'll notice on most of the bars he's hitting the snare on the 1,2,3,4. (There are two bars where he adds tom fills after hitting the 1, but he goes back to the snare on 1,2,3,4 for the two bars right before the instrumental section. But then on the instrumental section he switches to a syncopated rhythm on the snare instead, now hitting the up beats (or the &'s) instead of the down beats. So 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND (capital ANDS = snare hits). He does this through the instrumental, and then when they transition back to the lyrics, Labrie (vocals) comes in on the down beat of 1, and Portnoy gives us two 16th note snare hits on the 1. And then we get a rest with just the vocals until the & of 4 on that bar when the music brings us into the next bar and fully takes us into that section. So essentially Portnoy is shifting how you feel the music there back and forth. During the chorus you're getting a driving rhythm on each down beat, and then he shifts you to feeling all the up beats which is laid against arpeggios hitting every 16th note in each bar. (You can count/feel that as 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e...etc) So they're still giving you a driving rhythm with what they're doing, but now you're feeling the up beats instead. Its subtle because of the driving 16th notes you're hearing, but its there. And then when they transition into that verse section they bring you right back to feeling the down beats by having Labrie come in on the 1 along with Portnoy now hitting the 1 with the snare, and having the other instruments rest. So you get this back and forth between 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 and 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND, and then back to ONE on the reintroduction of the vocals. And my guess is you guys dug that back and forth feel and it felt really smooth because the syncopation isn't something you necessarily notice is happening but when they bring you back to one it helps emphasize that you're nailing the one of the new section and makes the introduction of that section pop. (Also resting the other instruments and having just the vocals helps too). Interestingly Portnoy also adds a 2nd 16th note snare hit here when they move to this section which I think helps take us out of the 16th note rhythm we were hearing just before in the instrumental section. Its kind of like he gives you a little tail off to help with the transition. So you were using to feeling the 1 e & a 2 e & a... with the synths, and that goes away but Portnoy leaves you with a little artifact of it with the snare when he hits the "1 e" with those two 16th note snare hits in the transition. So I think that's also a cool little thing they did that probably also helped make that transition seem smooth despite it being a decisive shift in sound.
You guys have played the first Dream Theater song I've heard that I love. I'm a big Rush fan, and until now, the best Dream Theater videos I've watched were their covers of Rush songs. I love this one, though.
@@stanflahaut1893 Maybe from a technical level they are better, but most of the Dream Theater songs I've heard just don't turn me on. A good song isn't all about demonstrating technical skill with your instrument.
Oh my gosh there's SO many Dream Theater songs to recommend. I would say a good song to try next is Breaking All Illusions, and if you want to watch it live there's a video of them performing it in Boston where they nail it. Either studio or live, its really good, so many transitions that are perfect. Its definitely a longer song but absolutely worth it. It's so cool to see you guys getting into prog, I'm hyped!!
Saw their concert for the 25th anniversary of this album. Small venue, really chill. First half of the concert was good, but kinda low energy. Intermission hit, they played some radio hits from 1992. Came back from intermission to play this song, and people LOST. THEIR. MINDS. Complete turnaround, and everyone was just completely into it. Energy completely changed.
You might like King Crimson. You may like Genesis.....Genesis are the masters of layers and transitions, influenced Dream Theater and all the later Prog bands. Try the first two cuts from 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' for size (Peter Gabriel singing with Phil Collins as backup singer....really) about 7 minutes worth.
Memories, when it first came out the first time I heard it was in my buddies basment getten stoned and he had a 15" subwoofer hooked up to his stereo system. Good times!
The progressive metal Trinity is Dream Theatre, Queensrÿche, and Fates Warning. Since you guys love this, you would love Fates Warning. They have a ton of really good songs. Hard to pick one song, but for starters “Point of View” would be good. Definitely something from the album Parallels.
The drumming on this by Mike Portnoy is just stunning. He beats the hell out that kit on this song. With all of the time changes and transitions. He must be regarded as one of the best.

we went to see them in San Jose about 5 years ago.
Check out the song "Home" from the album "Scenes from a memory"
It's a concept album intended to be played from beginning to end, and I think it's their best album.
Great song. From metropolis part 2: scenes from a memory.
Great great song!!
I prefer octavarium... but you really can't go wrong.
One of the greatest albums of all time.
This band brought progressive metal to the forefront at a time when hair metal bands were saturating MTV airplay and the grunge movement was getting ready to rear its head. Every member was/is a virtuoso.
First Tool now Dream Theater you guys have opened my ears to something new.
Lex is a full real metalhead :) sweet
Glad you guys are getting a taste of Dream Theater. Loved this video as well as the one you did for As I Am. You are only scratching the surface of what they can do with these two song choices. Can't wait to see more from you.
What timing, I'm going to see Dream Theater tonight!! I'm very new to them, my dad likes them so I'm going along to the concert with him 😀 (this is also how he got me in to Rush 20 years ago 🤣)
You have a cool dad. Both incredible bands. I hope you had a great time.
Yeah, they're great but TOOL is the BEST in prog metal. 💯
Rush was able to make it very enjoyable. That's a skill Dream Theater isn't great at.
Lol...I've watched this reaction 100 times. Best reaction to that transition ever. You guys rock. 🤘
Glad y'all discovered this song - it is one of my all-time favorites.
One of the all-time greatest masterpieces of progressive rock. A work of pure absolute genius.
When I heard this song the very first time I thought this is best in musicianship and innovation I've ever heard. 30 years later and in regards to groundbreaking new stuff compared to anything afterwards ... this is still my number 1! ABSOLUTELY LOVE how Lex enjoys this :)
Pull Me Under pulled me in. Been a fan ever since.
The abrupt end is a tribute to the Beatles song "I Want You (She's so Heavy)"
From my favorite Dream Theater album. The keyboards from Kevin Moore were phenomenal. The follow-up Awake was also a great album
Lex nailed it. "Tight" is the perfect way to describe Dream Theater. They are all master musicians and their timing is impeccable. I saw them on their last tour and can't wait to see them again.
Dream Theater's "UNDER A GLASS MOON" is your next sonic journey.
The best dude
Agreed
One of my fave Bands,...thanx for the great reaction 🤘❤
Thank you so much for reacting to this song! So glad you both liked it! The live (or studio version) of their song Breaking All Illusions would blow you mind! Also the song The Alien is a song off their newest album and they won a Grammy for it would also be a great listen! You guys are great!
If Brad & Lex opened for Dream Theater - I'd pay triple the price I paid to see DT alone.
"Pull Me Under" is a tune that just pulls you in.
Well, it pulled me in!
You MUST do, "Endless Sacrifice", by Dream Theater next! Super dope transitions and symphonic variety!
Always been in my top few.
Yesssss
Great tribal drumming…. In the opening
Never have I clicked so fast on one of your videos. Lol I love seeing people exposed to Dream Theater for the first time! The Count of Tuscany is another long insane Dream Theater song
Tuscany is amazing, so glad they played it on this current tour
The technical mastery of dream theater can't be understated they be having 14 super complex riffs per song it's insane
The "tight strings" sound you are referring to is mainly due to the amplifier he used, which was a Mesa Boogie amp, and very similar to the amp Metallica was using around that time.
"Forsaken" is a great dreamtheater song and it has a cool music video.
This album is amazing. From beginning to end. The drummer, MIke Portnoy, is now playing in Sons of Apollo with Billy Sheenan, Bumblefoot and Jeff Scott Soto. Check them out, incredible band.
the replacement drummer is even better though.
@@ajplaysdrums Funny. They were my last show before the shutdown. Penn's Peak in Pa.
@@satoricrush paradise rock club in Boston MA
I guess they were 'pulled under' definitely at the end. Did not know this band but they are fantastic! Discovered by following you two. So thank you!
@@stanflahaut1893 Thank you for your suggestions. I'm gonna pick it up.
This was epic on Guitar Hero. They are an amazing group. I remember on the video for this on Guitar Hero your on a ship in the sky and there are these giant eagles flying with you lol.
Definitely one of the most underrated bands ever!!
This is probably the best song for someone to get introduced to Dream Theater
When I saw the thumb nail I thought this may be too much for Brad but I was wrong. He really gets it now, It takes time to develop a ear for this music and its complexity. Thats the real end and they do that live too. All this album is awesome, there`s not a bad song on it.
Now finally we find what type of metal lights Brad up... Dream Theater!! Lol!
I forgot Dream Theater was a thing until a moment ago. Thanks for reminding me.
Takes me back to High School. Listening to the radio late at night while doing my homework.
I was in the 9th or 10th grade in Texas when this song came out.
So I think that's also a cool little thing they did that probably also helped make that transition seem smooth despite it being a decisive shift in sound.
you have just listened to some of the most talented musicians in a single band. Great song and album.
Can't forget John Petrucci as one of the best guitarist's around, check out Liquid Tension Experiment
I would say that is a really good song too, and I would hope they would do the live version because it's outstanding.
Bro john myung is such a good singer
Soooo glad you two enjoyed this as much as I have been for 20 years 🤘
Thank you for doing this, one of my favourite songs of all time!
These guys are all top notch musicians.
also very pretentious and so are a lot of their fans
Jordan Ruess needs to chill the hell out. Seriously.
This band is full.of members that are showmen. They are tough!
These cats are also from my area on Long Island, like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. John Petrucci, guitarist of Dream Theater, was at the guitar center where I went in for something a few years ago.
