As stupid as Sony is, Spider-Man is the one film IP they have left that people actually care about. They would be insane to sell the rights to Disney (and we also know Sony was the company keeping the MCU in check during Phase Bore). I don't see them giving up the rights to Spidey
Really, it depends on how well (or poorly) Sony at large is doing. Their movie department isn’t doing great, and many of their projects in the video games department have also flopped. They might end up doing it purely to remain solvent.
I have speculated for awhile that Across the Spider-Verse required a lot of reworking behind the scenes and so now they’re struggling that much more to make Beyond.
When the deal initially went south in 2019, Disney at one point offered to buy back half the rights, and put the spin-offs in the MCU, with Marvel having creative control. Sony stood to earn a lot of money, and they would just need to front half the budget while Marvel did the heavy lifting. I could see Sony revisiting this deal, as they’re out of luck if Disney stops making films for them.
Disney has no idea what to do with Spider-Man. They could take the b-listers and make them household names with Avengers, but Spider-Man has been horribly mishandled
Venom-verse failures aside, Sony has already made abot $20 BILLION from their investment, and considering that actual SPIDER-MAN movies are still making mountains of cash, I don't see them selling anytime soon. Why would they do that when they can sit back, do nothing, and continue to make a fortune through licensing and distribution?
I'd be okay with this. On 2 Conditions, 1.Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 happen 2. Disney does Season 3 of Spectacular Spider-Man.
If they didn't wanna focus on Spiderman, they should've just made movies about Agent Venom starring the guy who played Flash Thompson in Amazing Spiderman. It could've been loosley connected to that universe, then they could've even had him crossover with Venom.
I really hope there isn't any weight to this because we all know Marvel would destroy the IP within a couple of years. Not to say that Sony should have it as they have shown their incompetence also. I frankly don't know what avenue to take, but neither seems like the best choice currently as they simply haven't given us any faith to show otherwise.
Maybe Rothman and Sony see the way the wind is blowing and will take the cash and watch Warners and Disney go into a tailspin trying to revive the corpse that is the superhero movie genre unless it’s single character cottage industries like Wolverine, Batman, Deadpool, or Spider-Man.
The third Spider-verse movie was scheduled for this year, but then the writer's strike derailed it. The fact it doesn't even have a new release window at this point is concerning.
Kraven should have been a layup win. Not for comic fans, but for Normies. All you had to do was have the handsome guy with great abs murdering LOOOOOTS of goons in spectacular displays of ultra-violence. Boom. You got your normie women and your normie men locked in. That's all they had to do, and they couldn't even do that right.
The longer I think about it, the more it’s imo obvious that following the „Maleficient formula“ (making a beloved villain a misunderstood hero that has to fight a boring villain instead) doomed most of these movies. I wonder if the old Universal Monster movie approach of Monster vs Monster wouldn’t have worked better? Morbius fighting Venom and Kraven hunting down Spider-Woman could have worked so much better imo.
It doesn't pass the smell test. The MCU is already a damaged brand, why would they want to add to that damage by merging in another damaged brand? Disney needs to fix its own Marvel brand before taking on someone else's damaged goods.

In the long run I could see Spiderman outliving the MCU because for what 3 or 4 decades there has been both a consistent demand for Spiderman, in both film, television, cartoons, toys, games, and other merch. While merch is the biggest money maker for IPs film is a very close second if done well. So I could actually see Marvel telling Disney in the long run we need to get those rights back because remember why there hasn't been a Hulk or Fantastic Four film in the MCU until recently or never because Marvel didn't own those rights.
I'd rather see Garfield and Maguire continue on in their respective series. I am not a fan of Marvel's handling of the character. And yes, you read that right. I want two separate Spider-Man universes

Andre, I agree with you on the spider villains being damaged property right now. How damaged, I believe, depends on how well Marvel/Disney does with the Fantastic Four. I for one enjoyed the first two FF movies. Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans had the dynamic between Thing and Torch dang near perfect. If Marvel manages to redeem the FF then there's of a chance of this becoming reality instead of rumor.

What they should do is more Spider-man with his villains as villains instead of trying to make them anti-heroes. Morbius if anything should've been a villain out to acquire Spider-man's abilities. However if they really wanted to make them anti-heroes, they should've done the Spider-verse Totem story where each of them comes in contact with one of the animal totems and now Knull wants all of them to make himself stronger. But, this means no more Sinister Six as villains
at the rate of flops actors may just end up avoiding sony, disney, marvel, star wars, star trek and any other movie or show that has all the red flags to cause those dei flops. well that's if the actors have any brains and for the majority of them that seems unlikely.
Guess they finally figured out, without using spiderman they got nothing. I think instead of a cash trade they need to do a IP for IPs from aquired fox movies trade.
Doesn't Sony own a percentage of Spiderman from 1990's back? which was why Marvel created Miles while Sony would have the film rights to Miles Morales, they still owned a piece of Peter Parker and creating Miles was a screw you to Sony's percentage of Peter Parker etc. And if that's the case how would that factor into the deal?
While the rights allocation in regards to video games wouldn't change the licensing agreement they have with sony certainly would. The only reason they have an exclusive agreement is because of Sony owning the movie rights and using it as leverage to get a deal that is clearly unfavorable to marvel. Sony selling back the movie rights would result in the currently exclusive spiderman games release on xbox as well as the other titles they have in development once they renegotiate the licensing agreement.
I can seriously predict how Marvel would handle Spider-Man should the rights be sold back to them. In the 2015 Secret Wars comic, the Fantastic Four build a spaceship that’s designed to evacuate around 60 people during the Doomsday invoking incursion between Earths 616 and 1610. Miles Morales inadvertently stows away as the cataclysm ensues, and alongside Peter Parker is one of the only few who remembers life before the disaster. At the end of the story, Earth-616 is restored but 1610 is gone forever. Despite this, Molecule Man retcons it so that Miles and his family lived on the former Earth. Miles will be introduced in the MCU in Spider-Man 4 and will play a major role in Secret Wars. Since Peter Parker is allegedly one of the main stars of both that movie and the preceding Doomsday, they'll do with him what they did with Tony Stark in Endgame. Parker will sacrifice himself to stop Doctor Doom and save the Multiverse. This will leave Miles free to replace him as Spider-Man going forward.
While Earth-1610 was certainly intended to be gone forever, Spider-Men 2 #5 shows that it was indeed restored. But whether any of its history was rewritten or not is ambiguous.
If it weren't for Sony, Thor 4 wouldn't have sucked as bad. At best, Sony Pictures would only retain film distribution rights while Marvel gains full film production rights (like Universal Pictures with the Incredible Hulk in 2008).
Alternatively, Sony should lax their restrictions on what characters Marvel can use, so characters like Doctor Octopus, Kraven, and Electro can be included in the MCU. I don't think we should have Oscorp and the Green Goblin because that was scrapped. Canonically, Oscorp doesn't exist as seen in No Way Home, so introducing Oscorp would be confusing.
The first Venom wasn't a solid start. That film is not good. It made money because people wanted a Venom film, not because the actual film we got was any good. But it set the low standard for Sony that they can churn out movies of the quality superhero films were 22 years ago.
Yes, keep making movies within a certain time limit. Fox did this with the FF just to stay under the wire and prevent the rights from reverting back to Marvel.
No. Sony OWNS the movie rights. Disney is the one who has to keep making Spider-Man movies, or the rights will revert back to Sony fully. Same with Hulk. Universal hasn't made a Hulk movie in many years, nor does it have to.
If Sony had actually made good venom-verse movies, it could’ve been a cash cow for them. Most were either woke, bad, or both woke and bad. Until these movie studios hire good writers and stop with a woke nonsense, they’ll never be able to make good movies, superhero ones or otherwise.

Guess they finally figured out, without using spiderman they got nothing. I think instead of a cash trade they need to do a IP for IPs from aquired fox movies trade.
Never. They still in profit.
A Venom trilogy? Why??
What Molecule Man did for Miles was very sweet.
Spider-man is the gold mine to Sony just like Batman to DC.
Funny enough one of those films is actually set in 2003.
Why buy the spiderwhen you already have access to the silk?
How much for? 25 Billion perhaps? Better sell to Universal as people say.
Maybe Marvel should buy out themselves from the clutches of Disney .
Unless Sony is strapped for cash, this is a stupid idea.
I highly doubt sony would ever consider doing that tbh but hey u never know
Who's gonna play Paul in the MCU?
Does Sony have to do anything to prevent the rights from reverting for nothing?
Yes, keep making movies within a certain time limit. Fox did this with the FF just to stay under the wire and prevent the rights from reverting back to Marvel.
No. Sony OWNS the movie rights. Disney is the one who has to keep making Spider-Man movies, or the rights will revert back to Sony fully.
Same with Hulk. Universal hasn't made a Hulk movie in many years, nor does it have to.
I would sell the rights back to Disney and I’ll want 5 billion for the rights and 20 percent of everything you make from Spider-Man going forward. ✌🏽
Pascal and the rest of Sony's morons had a lot of nerve if they thought they could build s cinematic universe with such weak installments.
If Sony had actually made good venom-verse movies, it could’ve been a cash cow for them. Most were either woke, bad, or both woke and bad. Until these movie studios hire good writers and stop with a woke nonsense, they’ll never be able to make good movies, superhero ones or otherwise.
As much as I'd love this to happen, I have to look at it from a business perspective, would it make long term profit sense for Sony though?...
Disney should trade Star Wars for Spider-Man back.
Maybe Sony will Troll Microsoft for the Indiana Jones Game.
