I visited Norway in the spring of 2017. During the trip I visited multiple museums, including the cultural history museum in Oslo. It was somewhat shocking when there were signs all around the floor that containes all of the artifacts from the middle ages (tapestries, viking era swords, etc) stating that the exhibit would be closing to be replaced with an exhibit on climate change. Why am I going to a museum in Oslo to learn about climate change? I'm at the history museum for history.

As a Dane it has been hard to watch how even Norway has changed it's ways. For me Norweigans have always been the most rational and grounded people of the three of us.

Ive recently moved to Norway from New Zealand with my Norwegian wife. I owned a business in New zealand for 10 years and paid 28.5% business tax, then if i wanted to take out any money for myself i would pay the difference of the income tax of 33% to the business tax so an extra 4.5% tax. This whole double tax system in Norway is insane to me, why would anyone take any risks and go out in business? I have also brought a house here and now finding out if i want to move back to New Zealand one day i need to pay 30 something percent tax on the value of is absolute madness. I feel like ive been tricked. I had no idea the Norwegain goverment was so out of touch and greedy.
If you invest in the stock market you have too pay 38% in tax of the profit if you want too take out some earnings. So you take all of the risk and the goverment can take almost half of your earnings. You cant make it up

Transfer of ownership which now are over 90% automatic process and you as the seller do most of the work or pay someone to do it for you. And if "good forbid" you inherit something and then want to sell it. Then you have to wait for at least 1 year, and move and live there for 1 year, to avoid 22% tax on the whole sale. It is a very greedy system. Usually the property you inherit have already been payed down with taxed money (for instance your parents income). And we also pay property tax, just for owning something. Current policies doesn't have immediate effect, it takes time. 70% of norways population has a job and salary that is directly controlled by the government. There is very few "real private" jobs. The government is "very good" at micromanaging the economy. The government create tenders and hand them out to friendly companies that do their bidding. Everything is controlled to the last detail in an incredibly system. If you know capitalism, like Mises, Hayek, Sowell, and all the "irrelevant" experts, then you know that the government make stupid decisions and create ineffective systems. It doesn't fall apart over night. It takes time. There is already less jobs. Salary is not growing enough. There is tampering with statistics. The currency has crashed like 25%. Electricity price has exploded. The list is very long. There is no incentive to start a business or hire people any more. The judicial system is taken over by EU. The laws are from WEF/USA/UN/EU. Everything is made expensive on purpose. Flat tyre? A simple patch is no no. 4 new wheels.

My position used to be handled by three engineers, and now I’m working alone. It’s incredibly stressful and has a significant impact on my family life. The Norwegian krone has lost around 23% of its value against the euro since 2019, and people from European countries that were once a major source of labor for Norway no longer see the financial sense in living and working here. With such high costs and wages no longer amounting to €3,000 for 30,000 NOK but rather €2,550, it’s simply not worth it for them. On top of all that, a former prime minister announced, “We’ll give 1,000 billion NOK from the oil fund to Ukraine,” showing a complete detachment from reality. There is also manipulation of statistics to prevent people from seeing how much prices have really increased. The focus is always on comparing price increases over the past year or two, but 2019-2020 is never mentioned. Many things have doubled in price over the last five years. Later, we sold them to purchase a large family home when we got married and started our life together. But when I hear about people paying 20,000 NOK in rent plus electricity or heating costs "a-konto" for apartments of just 50-60 square meters, I can’t help but wonder-how much does a family need to earn to live a normal life? 20,000 NOK for rent, probably another 10,000-15,000 NOK for electricity, food, internet, phones, insurance, and so on. Where does that leave room for monthly transport passes or a car? What about clothes and shoes? Extracurricular activities for the kids? A trip to the cinema, a dinner at a restaurant, or something similar? A family without their own home needs at least 50,000 NOK per month just to maintain a decent standard of living. This is no longer the Norway we used to know. It’s turned into a form of wage slavery, where people are forced to work just to pay their bills and maintain a basic lifestyle. Not everyone earns an engineer’s salary like I do or holds a high-paying position. What about service workers? Aren’t they entitled to a decent life as well? If you fall behind even slightly, your quality of life is ruined, and this constant fear looms over so many people. It wasn’t like this before. I feel genuinely sorry when I see what this country has turned into because of incompetent politicians. Actually, calling them incompetent might not be fair-they know exactly what they’re doing. We always pride ourselves on the idea that there’s no corruption in Norway. Sure, there’s no "petty corruption," but if you look beyond everyday people to the ties between politics and industry, the level of corruption is staggering. All of this just frustrates me and makes me deeply sad.
I came to Norway as a migrant worker in 2017. Had a low paying job and lived by myself in Oslo. I never worried about paying my bills, enjoyed nights out with friends, sponsored multiple hobbies, paid for holidays for myself and my mom, and managed to save around 100k in a year. Fast forward to 2024, and I struggle to save any money at all, I go to 0 every month. Wtf happened, Norway?

I was born and still live in Norway and we have a very high tax rate, but we also have a lot of extra costs like municipal fees and something called a "TV license" which gives you a channel called NRK which not many people watch but is forced to pay for today even if you don't have a TV since they put it in the tax. They take 34% of the normal salary and if you don't have a tax card they will take 50% of your salary. If you have a home in Norway, it is easy to feel that after tax and deductions, you only have around 7-15% of your salary left that can be used for what you want which depends on the job you have. The food prices here have gone really high up these last years and the state refuses to find a solution to lower prices. The state wonders why more than 40-60% of the population drives to Sweden to shop for food. If you try to buy 2 Kg chicken breasts in Norway the cheapest I've found costs 30 dollars and in Sweden, it only costs around 14-15 dollars (That's Half Price!) So the only thing the state thinks will solve this problem is to raise prices here in Norway even higher... For them, the solution is (High prices can only be solved with even higher prices) Sounds stupid because it is stupid... If you have a large fortune, you must pay wealth tax. If what you have in your savings account and other things you own such as a house or car or shares does not exceed 1.5 million NOK (135 150 dollars today), you do not have to pay wealth tax. If you receive interest on your savings, you must pay tax on this gain. So now is even better to have an account in Sweden because there is no wealth taxes there. Norway is going to take itself out because of all the different taxes we have here.
The TV license was abolished almost 5 years ago, though we are still indirectly taxed for it because now NRK is paid directly from the state budget. Also you didn't even mention VAT, which is 25% on (almost) everything. I hope you realise there are many countries and in the US many states that don't have a VAT at all.
We had the same crap in Switzerland with the "tv license" even if you didn't have a TV at home. Those countries have become unlivable, unless you are an African refugee....Big salaries, but taxes from all sides, specially the insurances that are so costly. @@vhaarr Yeah, I already know that. That's why I said they put it in the tax. The TV license was in use until 2020 when it was replaced by funding through a progressive tax. So instead of one household, every taxpayer is paying for it (more for them, I guess). And VAT (Value added tax) for goods in Norwegian stores and also the VOEC for everything we buy outside of Norway. If some web shops outside of Norway don't have VOEC we have to pay a customs fee for the item also... And even if a shop has a VOEC there are still limits for how much you can buy before you need to pay a customs fee as well.

@@vhaarr There still is state tax on goods in USA, they don't call it VAT but the prices at the store does not show the taxes so you think its cheap but they can be up to about 7-8% on state taxes. Most ecconomies do have VAT.

This really reminds me of 70's Sweden, where the leading party, The Social Democrats got so cocky they ended up taxing business owners over 100%. This lead to Astrid Lindgren (the children's author behind Pippi Longstocking) writing a short story about a greedy witch, aluding to the party in the biggest newspaper in the country. Mind you, Lindgren was up until that point a proud supporter of the party, and in no way a "greedy capitalist" who wanted all the wealth for herself. Things changed a little bit for the better after that, but Sweden is still, just like Norway, not an easy country to become successful in.

In South Africa if you are a business owner, make $100, you get taxed 28%, leaving you $72, if you take that $72 as income it is taxed at 30%, meaning you net $47 of the original $100. With the $47, if you use it to buy groceries you pay 17.5% VAT... meaning government takes a further $9 of your money in taxes. In total, of the original $100 YOU made: - Government gets $62 - You get $38 But it does end there. The $38 you used for groceries is income to the grocer. Right? He pays 28% of that to government in company tax... and if HE wants to draw a salary, he pays a further 30% income tax. So government takes $10 from the company, and $9 as income tax from the grocer... Meaning by this point government has taken 10 + 9 + 62 = $81 of the original $100! Why would ANY entrepreneur stay?
In Finland you have a rather bizarre situation in wages as well. Nominally income tax is quite low for median earners, on 40k income tax would be ~16%, but with another 8% tacked on top for mandatory "retirement insurance" and "unemployment insurance", only the person can't decide when to retire for themslves, the state sets the minimum retirement age, and keep raising it. So 24% income tax, that doesn't sound bad, right? Only there are so many pre-wage and post-wage taxation and fee mechanics, that in studies they found the total tax burden compared to nominal wage is over 70% these days, for an average married worker who owns a car and has a kid. Higher still if you don't have dependents. And pretty much every year the government lives beyond its means, and much like Norway, squanders and outright wastes a good chunk of it. But you can't get rid of socialists without another civil war, so the decline cannot be stopped.

Meanwhile 28 million people draw free benefits with no strings attached. 14 million of those say they can't find work but in actuality they reject menial jobs and would rather get the benefits which include free water, free electricity, free housing, free education, free healthcare. Meanwhile, taxpayers pay 28%-45% income tax depending on income. then 17.5% tax on purchases. 5-6% levies for buying fuel. 1% contribution to road accident fund, there's a tax on property, tax if you own/hire a tv even if you don't watch the national broadcaster, tax on solar installations(!!!!!). There is a law now that all taxpayers with private medical aid will have their medical aid taken over by government and the funds will be shared with those who don't pay...because "that is fair". There was similar debate intended to introduce a law to do the same with retirement funds: take from those who saved up and distribute across everyone including those who didn't contribute. We've done the math too. For every $1 we make here, 67% of it ends up as tax. The taxpayers cannot out-vote the non-contributors because its a 1 million taxpayers versus 56 million non-payers battle.

As an Argentinian who proudly voted for Javier Milei, I must tell you this: he won mainly because our country was so mismanaged, that SOMEONE had to deal with it, and only an outsider like him could. He is doing an amazing job. The bad news is that it took us 20 years to understand that socialism is bad, and I’m quite pessimistic about this. Norway got mass converted to Christianity and lost their balls a thousand years ago. Then the black death killed most of the population and the royalty. Then they spent 500+ years owned by Denmark and then Sweden before they became independent again. Then they continued as a frozen backwater fishing village until they became the Beverly Hillbillies post WWII because of oil.
An exit tax is a monumentally stupid idea because it increases the risk for future investors. No one is going to want to take the risk of bringing their business into Norway if they have to add a 37% penalty tax on top of the possibility of the venture not being profitable.
Don't worry, you must be living in Norway. It's not like the companies disappeared along with the biggest boys moving to Switzerland. Just the pressure on the company to produce 2-3% of it's total value just so the owner can pay the damn fortune tax.

Meaning that if you're a foreign investor that spent money to set up a business in Norway and it fails, they will tax you 37.8% of your investment to close shop and leave.

I'm just a regular working class Norwegian, and I've never really been into politics. However, in the last few years I have had this uneasy feeling that something is definitely wrong. Small hints here and there, for example, that it seems that several of our so-called leaders working in top positions in government have been caught cheating on their final exams, which probably has been a great factor in helping them get into the governmental positions in the first place. Another example is that it we send a lot of our money to aid Ukraine in the war. I do believe that it's good to help others but it shouldn't come at the expense of ourselves. A recent newspaper article said that the salary of the governmental jobs have increased by 40% in the last few years, and at the same time many schools and educational institutions are being considered to be shut down because of money problems. I don't know if our government have much control anymore on where our oil money is being invested in. We want to support deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, but it turns out that we have been sponsoring the Brazilian government in stopping that, but at the same time sponsored the companies that are responsible for the deforestation itself. I feel that Norway right now is like a shell that looks nice on the outside but is completely empty on the inside. Small cracks are beginning to form and if one peaks closer at those cracks one can see that there's definitely something wrong. If we continue this way, at some point everything is going to fall apart.
I too am Norwegian. This could be greatest country on earth, ever. Sadly, and i'm going to make a huge claim here and say that Norway is the most corrupt country in the world. 5 million population but our number of politicians is much greater than that of Denmark. We have politicians that are willingly making the lives of the population worse, and they do it knowingly too. Politicians in Norway (even in the labour party..) has zero work experience. They go from school, usually from a wealthy, out of touch family straight into office.

As a Brit working on Norwegian oil rigs I'm endlessly mystified by the way Norway has managed to sleepwalk towards recession without addressing any of the problems. The signs are not yet really biting the internal economy but they will more and more. The idea that the oil fund will make everything OK is just madness...

If you get sick or hurt if and worked and paid 40% tax all your life your benefits are under the level you are in the category as poor in Norway. But migrants get things worth 10.000$ at least when they come. They get free license cost a norwegian 18 year old 5000$ and free dentist that are 500$ if you need to do something small Norway have the most expensive dentist in Europe and norwegians go to Thailand, Poland or Turki or Spain to fix the teeth to save money. But in 5 years the Norwegian government put up the price for 1€ from 7NOK to 12NOK!! That will say that the elderly that live in Spain just lost half their pensjon in a few year's. And they lived under the poor rate before they cut the benefits. Now they are dying like flies because they can't afford food and doctor and medicine. If they make paper you move to Spain to get cheaper medicine and doctor then Norway will take away a lot of your benefits from norway🤯 I have had two good friends die in a short time, one of kidney failure and one found dead. Those exit taxes are horrid, I remember hearing CA tried that once and it didn’t work well. Then again they had agents digging through people’s garbage looking for receipts. I liked this video and would watch others like it. I’m from Asia originally but living in the states. So hearing about different parts of the world and their economy is quite interesting. @juliettek California has enacted a law that affects people and/or businesses leaving the state, but is not a fee to leave the state but to MOVE OUT OF THE STATE. It is also my understanding that the charge will go on for a number of years after the escape from California.

I’m noticing the change in my workspace.. as a bus driver, there’s always a lack of drivers, so we took in new employees from Poland, and also NAV ran campaigns to help refugees get work by giving them free courses.. helping them getting the bus driver liscense.. and we celebrated for new employees joining the fold.. this year the celebration changed to celebrating the ppl of colors joining.. with natural born Norwegians getting just a small profile picture in the bottom. And then they do questionaires and surveys about those other ethnicities because “it’s important to know your co-workers culture”… its so bad now that the central office where all drivers call in to report situations is staffed by 80% non Norwegians.. and more often then not i have to struggle with conveying my message in simplified sentences and summarizing situations because they can’t handle large amount of info usually conveyed in a normal conversation…

Norway has seriously declined in a lot of ways over the last two decades, culturally, socially, economically, demographically. It's gotten to the point that I don't recognize my own country any more.
Here in Pennsylvania i pay 6k a year for my house in the form of taxes. The nicer the house the more you pay. It's always been that way. Not including the pay tax, food, utilities, and every day things. Basically about 60% of what everyone makes goes to taxes. We all have a breaking point. And they are pushing up towards it. I think it's happening right now. Considering that on top of taxes we now have to think, act and speak a very specific way.

He came from the old country and is the only person I knew and could trust besides what my mother had done digging through my family tree. My mother side was from Norway as well. Let's say you want to retire with income of $80k. Rule of thumb is that you can withdraw 4% of your savings, meaning you need to save $2M to get that retirement. But with a fortune tax of just 1%, that's $20k/yr being taken from your nest egg. You don't have enough to retire anymore. Instead, you have to save $2.67M or a third MORE than what you would have had to save before. *But it's WORSE than it sounds.* The tax is a hole draining your retirement bucket as you try to fill it. If you start saving $5k/yr, increase it by 3% each year (assuming raises), and earn 8%/yr, you will have $2M after 40 yr. But if your savings get taxed at 1% of their value each year--and being generous let's consider ONLY the amount over $170k--you only have $1.7M after 40 yr. It takes another 2.5 yr to get to $2M. But you need to get to $2.67M, so you actually have to work & save for 46 yr instead of 40 yr. It's like raising your retirement age from 65 to 71. (These calcs ignore income tax. So it's actually much worse.)
It is not possible to save. The inflation rate is radically understated, and despite the nominal value in the saving account increases, the purchasing power is declining.
And they just raised the retirement age from 67, to 69 and 71 years, depending your birthdate. All young people must work till 71 now! The craziest is; government want people to work only 30 hrs a week, and some people now working 4 days / week. -But you have to go on til you're 71!!!

I lived in Norway, Stavanger to be precise, for 6 months back in 2007. I absolutely loved the country, even though I could only travel during the winter, when Norwegians were even more shut-in and not particularly friendly. Back then, I could definitely back the idea of 40%+ taxes (how naïve, I know), because I could see the money wherever you went. Taxes were used to improve the life of the folk. It saddens me deeply to see that this is no longer the case.

I was one Brit who saw Nordic countries as idylic, then i started to see the complexity of it all. Love learning about whats actually going on in countries. I am from Norway. we have lived in exile for 9 years, after falsely being accused of being "seriously mentally ill, dangerous, and unable to take care of myself or children" by a police officer that we have never met. 9 years in limbo, poverty and desperation with 3 children. Nobody does anything to help us get back home, only gaslighting if anything, but they are very good at making up silly pretext.

No taxpayer should ever be forced to fund any kind of game development at all. In fact, there are a few things that are legitimate for being funded in that way by the state. If you can't convince people to voluntarily fund your project, then it does not deserve to be funded.

Taxes will always be used to pay for things you're personally against, don't need, or don't use. Still, concidering all the things in Norway that are cheap or free because it's tax-funded, I think we get a lot back... it's not like most is used on a bloated military or lower taxes for the 1% riches like in some countries! Art - paintings, statues, theater, movies... and now video-games - have always been to some degree substituted by the government... even when perhaps the lower classes couldn't appriciate it. Norway is not a perfect country (like no can be), but in all honesty, it is a very loved country both for its nature and native culture. Norwegians are rather well spoken of so to speak. Compared to Sweden, Denmark and Finland, Norway is often described as the best country in many ways. BUT it is indeed THE most expensive country in while Scandinavia to live in, and that can't be an understatement. Yes you earn a lot of money there on academic level jobs, and many work conditions are top-notch - but the caviat is the high living expenses are near cruel. Most people who live/work in Norway closer to the boarder drives 1-2 hours over to Sweden every week to stock up on groceries and needes and other supplies because everything is so expensive! The Scandinavian left are so obsessed with insane high taxes on near evrything. Sure, one can accept it on alcohol and tobaco, but Public TV/Radio tax, Gasoline tax (insane high), electricity (ridicules when much can be produced by there own), purchases tax, rent tax, and then the insane traffic taxes are nothing but just that, INSANITY. The taxes to buy a car, the yearly taxes to own a car, road tax ec. are all to high. I know a lot of European countries sits in the same boat! The absolute worse is how irresponsible the tax money is used - the public TV/Radio tax is argaubly the worst because compared to the other ones, this is NOT needed to live and when the media is so left-wing parted it further makes the case of that tax BS. I visited Norway in the spring of 2017. During the trip I visited multiple museums, including the cultural history museum in Oslo. It was somewhat shocking when there were signs all around the floor that containes all of the artifacts from the middle ages (tapestries, viking era swords, etc) stating that the exhibit would be closing to be replaced with an exhibit on climate change. Why am I going to a museum in Oslo to learn about climate change? I'm at the history museum for history.

Ive recently moved to Norway from New Zealand with my Norwegian wife. I owned a business in New zealand for 10 years and paid 28.5% business tax, then if i wanted to take out any money for myself i would pay the difference of the income tax of 33% to the business tax so an extra 4.5% tax. This whole double tax system in Norway is insane to me, why would anyone take any risks and go out in business? I have also brought a house here and now finding out if i want to move back to New Zealand one day i need to pay 30 something percent tax on the value of is absolute madness. I feel like ive been tricked. I had no idea the Norwegain goverment was so out of touch and greedy.
If you invest in the stock market you have too pay 38% in tax of the profit if you want too take out some earnings. So you take all of the risk and the goverment can take almost half of your earnings. You cant make it up

It is a very greedy system. Usually the property you inherit have already been payed down with taxed money (for instance your parents income). And we also pay property tax, just for owning something. Current policies doesn't have immediate effect, it takes time. 70% of norways population has a job and salary that is directly controlled by the government. There is very few "real private" jobs. The government is "very good" at micromanaging the economy. The government create tenders and hand them out to friendly companies that do their bidding. Everything is controlled to the last detail in an incredibly system.
If you know capitalism, like Mises, Hayek, Sowell, and all the "irrelevant" experts, then you know that the government make stupid decisions and create ineffective systems. It doesn't fall apart over night. It takes time.
There is already less jobs. Salary is not growing enough. There is tampering with statistics. The currency has crashed like 25%. Electricity price has exploded. The list is very long. There is no incentive to start a business or hire people any more.
The judicial system is taken over by EU. The laws are from WEF/USA/UN/EU. Everything is made expensive on purpose. Flat tyre? A simple patch is no no. 4 new wheels.

I work as a civil engineer, and since 2020, Norway has lost about one-third (if not two-thirds) of its workers from Poland and Lithuania in the construction industry.
It has become so absurd that we can no longer find skilled workers like we once had.
Additionally, the workload has increased because many companies are struggling. My position used to be handled by three engineers, and now I’m working alone. It’s incredibly stressful and has a significant impact on my family life.
The Norwegian krone has lost around 23% of its value against the euro since 2019, and people from European countries that were once a major source of labor for Norway no longer see the financial sense in living and working here. With such high costs and wages no longer amounting to €3,000 for 30,000 NOK but rather €2,550, it’s simply not worth it for them.
On top of all that, a former prime minister announced, “We’ll give 1,000 billion NOK from the oil fund to Ukraine,” showing a complete detachment from reality.
There is also manipulation of statistics to prevent people from seeing how much prices have really increased. The focus is always on comparing price increases over the past year or two, but 2019-2020 is never mentioned. Many things have doubled in price over the last five years.
My wife and I have started transitioning our work to online platforms, and we’ll likely sell one of our apartments next summer and leave Norway because this illusion has become unbearable.
My mother’s parents are Serbs who lived in Norway but moved back to Serbia to enjoy their retirement.

My wife and I are fortunate to have inherited an apartment, and both of us managed to buy our own properties in our early 20s. Later, we sold them to purchase a large family home when we got married and started our life together.
But when I hear about people paying 20,000 NOK in rent plus electricity or heating costs "a-konto" for apartments of just 50-60 square meters, I can’t help but wonder-how much does a family need to earn to live a normal life?
20,000 NOK for rent, probably another 10,000-15,000 NOK for electricity, food, internet, phones, insurance, and so on.
Where does that leave room for monthly transport passes or a car? What about clothes and shoes? Extracurricular activities for the kids? A trip to the cinema, a dinner at a restaurant, or something similar?
A family without their own home needs at least 50,000 NOK per month just to maintain a decent standard of living.
This is no longer the Norway we used to know. It’s turned into a form of wage slavery, where people are forced to work just to pay their bills and maintain a basic lifestyle. Not everyone earns an engineer’s salary like I do or holds a high-paying position. What about service workers? Aren’t they entitled to a decent life as well?
If you fall behind even slightly, your quality of life is ruined, and this constant fear looms over so many people. It wasn’t like this before.
I feel genuinely sorry when I see what this country has turned into because of incompetent politicians. Actually, calling them incompetent might not be fair-they know exactly what they’re doing. We always pride ourselves on the idea that there’s no corruption in Norway. Sure, there’s no "petty corruption," but if you look beyond everyday people to the ties between politics and industry, the level of corruption is staggering.
All of this just frustrates me and makes me deeply sad.

I was born and still live in Norway and we have a very high tax rate, but we also have a lot of extra costs like municipal fees and something called a "TV license" which gives you a channel called NRK which not many people watch but is forced to pay for today even if you don't have a TV since they put it in the tax. They take 34% of the normal salary and if you don't have a tax card they will take 50% of your salary. If you have a home in Norway, it is easy to feel that after tax and deductions, you only have around 7-15% of your salary left that can be used for what you want which depends on the job you have. The food prices here have gone really high up these last years and the state refuses to find a solution to lower prices.
The state wonders why more than 40-60% of the population drives to Sweden to shop for food. If you try to buy 2 Kg chicken breasts in Norway the cheapest I've found costs 30 dollars and in Sweden, it only costs around 14-15 dollars (That's Half Price!) So the only thing the state thinks will solve this problem is to raise prices here in Norway even higher... For them, the solution is (High prices can only be solved with even higher prices) Sounds stupid because it is stupid...
If you have a large fortune, you must pay wealth tax. If what you have in your savings account and other things you own such as a house or car or shares does not exceed 1.5 million NOK (135 150 dollars today), you do not have to pay wealth tax. If you receive interest on your savings, you must pay tax on this gain. So now is even better to have an account in Sweden because there is no wealth taxes there. Norway is going to take itself out because of all the different taxes we have here.
The TV license was abolished almost 5 years ago, though we are still indirectly taxed for it because now NRK is paid directly from the state budget.
Also you didn't even mention VAT, which is 25% on (almost) everything. I hope you realise there are many countries and in the US many states that don't have a VAT at all.
We had the same crap in Switzerland with the "tv license" even if you didn't have a TV at home. @@vhaarr Yeah, I already know that. That's why I said they put it in the tax. The TV license was in use until 2020 when it was replaced by funding through a progressive tax. So instead of one household, every taxpayer is paying for it (more for them, I guess). And VAT (Value added tax) for goods in Norwegian stores and also the VOEC for everything we buy outside of Norway. If some web shops outside of Norway don't have VOEC we have to pay a customs fee for the item also... And even if a shop has a VOEC there are still limits for how much you can buy before you need to pay a customs fee as well.

In South Africa if you are a business owner, make $100, you get taxed 28%, leaving you $72, if you take that $72 as income it is taxed at 30%, meaning you net $47 of the original $100.
With the $47, if you use it to buy groceries you pay 17.5% VAT... meaning government takes a further $9 of your money in taxes. In total, of the original $100 YOU made:
- Government gets $62
- You get $38
But it does end there. The $38 you used for groceries is income to the grocer. Right? He pays 28% of that to government in company tax... and if HE wants to draw a salary, he pays a further 30% income tax.
So government takes $10 from the company, and $9 as income tax from the grocer...
Meaning by this point government has taken 10 + 9 + 62 = $81 of the original $100!
Why would ANY entrepreneur stay?
In Finland you have a rather bizarre situation in wages as well. Nominally income tax is quite low for median earners, on 40k income tax would be ~16%, but with another 8% tacked on top for mandatory "retirement insurance" and "unemployment insurance", only the person can't decide when to retire for themslves, the state sets the minimum retirement age, and keep raising it. So 24% income tax, that doesn't sound bad, right? Only there are so many pre-wage and post-wage taxation and fee mechanics, that in studies they found the total tax burden compared to nominal wage is over 70% these days, for an average married worker who owns a car and has a kid. Higher still if you don't have dependents. And pretty much every year the government lives beyond its means, and much like Norway, squanders and outright wastes a good chunk of it. But you can't get rid of socialists without another civil war, so the decline cannot be stopped.
@@MichaelDothoso In South Africa 4 million people pay income tax. Of those 1 million pay over 2/3rds of it. Meanwhile 28 million people draw free benefits with no strings attached. 14 million of those say they can't find work but in actuality they reject menial jobs and would rather get the benefits which include free water, free electricity, free housing, free education, free healthcare.
Meanwhile, taxpayers pay 28%-45% income tax depending on income. then 17.5% tax on purchases. 5-6% levies for buying fuel. 1% contribution to road accident fund, there's a tax on property, tax if you own/hire a tv even if you don't watch the national broadcaster, tax on solar installations(!!!!!). There is a law now that all taxpayers with private medical aid will have their medical aid taken over by government and the funds will be shared with those who don't pay...because "that is fair". There was similar debate intended to introduce a law to do the same with retirement funds: take from those who saved up and distribute across everyone including those who didn't contribute.
We've done the math too. For every $1 we make here, 67% of it ends up as tax. The taxpayers cannot out-vote the non-contributors because its a 1 million taxpayers versus 56 million non-payers battle.
So, in summary, women and blacks shouldn't run countries. I agree.

As a Norwegian living and working in the UK, I used to be proud of being Norwegian, but that's years ago. Now, I am just embarrassed about everything the politicians does to the country. Even the royal family doesn't escape ridicule. I was an avid supporter of the royal family and was proud of our king and queen. Now I just want to abolish the whole thing. No responsibility whatsoever on the media storm they are currently in. Just silence and blind tolerance of what is going on, and d**eneracy all the way, without addressing anything. At least I am not living in Norway anymore, but I got family and friends over there still, and it pains me to see what the country has become. I will vote in the general election next year, and I am definitely voting for FRP now. Everything to get the socialists out of parliament.

An exit tax is a monumentally stupid idea because it increases the risk for future investors. No one is going to want to take the risk of bringing their business into Norway if they have to add a 37% penalty tax on top of the possibility of the venture not being profitable.

Meaning that if you're a foreign investor that spent money to set up a business in Norway and it fails, they will tax you 37.8% of your investment to close shop and leave.

I'm just a regular working class Norwegian, and I've never really been into politics. However, in the last few years I have had this uneasy feeling that something is definitely wrong. Small hints here and there, for example, that it seems that several of our so-called leaders working in top positions in government have been caught cheating on their final exams, which probably has been a great factor in helping them get into the governmental positions in the first place.
Another example is that it we send a lot of our money to aid Ukraine in the war. I do believe that it's good to help others but it shouldn't come at the expense of ourselves. A recent newspaper article said that the salary of the governmental jobs have increased by 40% in the last few years, and at the same time many schools and educational institutions are being considered to be shut down because of money problems.
I don't know if our government have much control anymore on where our oil money is being invested in. We want to support deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, but it turns out that we have been sponsoring the Brazilian government in stopping that, but at the same time sponsored the companies that are responsible for the deforestation itself.
I feel that Norway right now is like a shell that looks nice on the outside but is completely empty on the inside. Small cracks are beginning to form and if one peaks closer at those cracks one can see that there's definitely something wrong. If we continue this way, at some point everything is going to fall apart.
I too am Norwegian. This could be greatest country on earth, ever. Sadly, and i'm going to make a huge claim here and say that Norway is the most corrupt country in the world. 5 million population but our number of politicians is much greater than that of Denmark. We have politicians that are willingly making the lives of the population worse, and they do it knowingly too. Politicians in Norway (even in the labour party..) has zero work experience. They go from school, usually from a wealthy, out of touch family straight into office.

If you get sick or hurt if and worked and paid 40% tax all your life your benefits are under the level you are in the category as poor in Norway. But migrants get things worth 10.000$ at least when they come. They get free license cost a norwegian 18 year old 5000$ and free dentist that are 500$ if you need to do something small Norway have the most expensive dentist in Europe and norwegians go to Thailand, Poland or Turki or Spain to fix the teeth to save money. But in 5 years the Norwegian government put up the price for 1€ from 7NOK to 12NOK!! That will say that the elderly that live in Spain just lost half their pensjon in a few year's. And they lived under the poor rate before they cut the benefits. Now they are dying like flies because they can't afford food and doctor and medicine. If they make paper you move to Spain to get cheaper medicine and doctor then Norway will take away a lot of your benefits from norway🤯
I have had two good friends die in a short time, one of kidney failure and one found dead. Its terrible stories down here where i hear old people kill themselves in shame after grandma or grandpa dont have money to buy their grandkids present for birthday and Christmas like they had afford to for some years ago. Norway is destroying expenses must be the only reason and people on pensjon is just an expense so when they passes they have more money to give to EU and Green Energy. I had this month take out my savings for presents to some of my sisters kids in Norway and my dog have tumor and she should be in hospital but Norwegian taxing just made it worse i only got to pay my rent and my medecine and had to take oit money from that accont really hurts when i lock at Bella and see she not so good. Am 41 years old. Broken but i was a fisherman on boats and i don't want to retiring now especially when i cant live hand have food out the month. Its a so much bigger story here then just tax. @juliettek California has enacted a law that affects people and/or businesses leaving the state, but is not a fee to leave the state but to MOVE OUT OF THE STATE. It is also my understanding that the charge will go on for a number of years after the escape from California.
Same situation in Sweden sadly. Finland isn't too far off either but I know Denmark has been changing course for the better these past years.

I’m noticing the change in my workspace.. as a bus driver, there’s always a lack of drivers, so we took in new employees from Poland, and also NAV ran campaigns to help refugees get work by giving them free courses.. helping them getting the bus driver liscense.. and we celebrated for new employees joining the fold.. this year the celebration changed to celebrating the ppl of colors joining.. with natural born Norwegians getting just a small profile picture in the bottom. And then they do questionaires and surveys about those other ethnicities because “it’s important to know your co-workers culture”… its so bad now that the central office where all drivers call in to report situations is staffed by 80% non Norwegians.. and more often then not i have to struggle with conveying my message in simplified sentences and summarizing situations because they can’t handle large amount of info usually conveyed in a normal conversation…

Here in Pennsylvania i pay 6k a year for my house in the form of taxes. The nicer the house the more you pay. It's always been that way. Not including the pay tax, food, utilities, and every day things. Basically about 60% of what everyone makes goes to taxes. We all have a breaking point. And they are pushing up towards it. I think it's happening right now. Considering that on top of taxes we now have to think, act and speak a very specific way.

But keep in mind that around half of the people who file every year are not subject to any income tax under U.S. law. SO, there might be some U.S. citizens living over seas who do pay some income tax. But many of them are not required to pay any even though they are required to file a return every year.

He came from the old country and is the only person I knew and could trust besides what my mother had done digging through my family tree. My mother side was from Norway as well. There is a picture my mom still has of my grandmother on the bridge of a ship with her dad who was named Thomas Lunder. That traces back my middle name to him past down from my uncle Thomas Mann. Incidentally my wife’s side of her family traces back to Lundi. Let's say you want to retire with income of $80k. Rule of thumb is that you can withdraw 4% of your savings, meaning you need to save $2M to get that retirement.
But with a fortune tax of just 1%, that's $20k/yr being taken from your nest egg. You don't have enough to retire anymore. Instead, you have to save $2.67M or a third MORE than what you would have had to save before. *But it's WORSE than it sounds.*
The tax is a hole draining your retirement bucket as you try to fill it. If you start saving $5k/yr, increase it by 3% each year (assuming raises), and earn 8%/yr, you will have $2M after 40 yr. But if your savings get taxed at 1% of their value each year--and being generous let's consider ONLY the amount over $170k--you only have $1.7M after 40 yr. It takes another 2.5 yr to get to $2M. But you need to get to $2.67M, so you actually have to work & save for 46 yr instead of 40 yr. It's like raising your retirement age from 65 to 71.
(These calcs ignore income tax. So it's actually much worse.)

It is not possible to save. The inflation rate is radically understated, and despite the nominal value in the saving account increases, the purchasing power is declining.
And they just raised the retirement age from 67, to 69 and 71 years, depending your birthdate. All young people must work till 71 now! The craziest is; government want people to work only 30 hrs a week, and some people now working 4 days / week. -But you have to go on til you're 71!!!

I lived in Norway, Stavanger to be precise, for 6 months back in 2007. I absolutely loved the country, even though I could only travel during the winter, when Norwegians were even more shut-in and not particularly friendly. Back then, I could definitely back the idea of 40%+ taxes (how naïve, I know), because I could see the money wherever you went. Taxes were used to improve the life of the folk. It saddens me deeply to see that this is no longer the case.

This is wrong, it was a study about the historie of titanwhite , a chemical pigment made in Norway and they looked on the impact of it in the world. A small part in the study they looked on how they in 1920s market it in a rasist way. The study was not to find out if white was rasist but to look into how this norwegian invention affected the world. Stay informed Guys!

Apart from my own country (just south of yours...), I like Norway the most. Appreciate what you got, because in comparison with the rest of the globe, it is pretty darn good.

Yes i love videos like this. I studied in Edinburgh and lots of my friends were from Norway. Long time now and sad to say long time no contact with most.
I was one Brit who saw Nordic countries as idylic, then i started to see the complexity of it all. Love learning about whats actually going on in countries.

I am from Norway. we have lived in exile for 9 years, after falsely being accused of being "seriously mentally ill, dangerous, and unable to take care of myself or children" by a police officer that we have never met. 9 years in limbo, poverty and desperation with 3 children. Nobody does anything to help us get back home, only gaslighting if anything, but they are very good at making up silly pretext.

There is a reason why I feel alienated in my own country. I am grateful for the help I've got but it's still near impossible to have any opportunity to build anything of your own without being taxed into oblivion. It does not help the fact that the birthrate is taking a nose dive alongside the immigration policies they are enforcing. Not to mention the superficial social situations and lack of any true connection. This is a zombie society, we are already dead. There is no denying it.

No taxpayer should ever be forced to fund any kind of game development at all.
In fact, there are a few things that are legitimate for being funded in that way by the state. If you can't convince people to voluntarily fund your project, then it does not deserve to be funded.
When you've paid your taxes, it's not your money any longer - just as your salery no longer belongs the company you work at. Taxes will always be used to pay for things you're personally against, don't need, or don't use. Still, concidering all the things in Norway that are cheap or free because it's tax-funded, I think we get a lot back... it's not like most is used on a bloated military or lower taxes for the 1% riches like in some countries!
Art - paintings, statues, theater, movies... and now video-games - have always been to some degree substituted by the government... even when perhaps the lower classes couldn't appriciate it. It's weird, all the talk on the right about "Norwegian/Europeab culture" and how migrants "destroys" it... yet very little interest in funding art and culture! Most art and culture won't be profitable, but that is not it's purpose.

We are only delegating limited powers to the state. It does not ever actually own that money. It is only working as a proxy for us.

No, the reason the rest of the world barely knows anything about Norwegian "culture" is that it's watered down by state intervention, and any arts you produce is ignored by everyone but yourselves.
The US arts reached a greater pinnacle when the state was not interfering. Not that it does, that influence is waning.

No difference. We have the exact same system as described in the video. Exit taxes, more then half taken away when taking out money off a business, taxes on stock profits, tax on buying real estate but no deduction on selling etc.

Norway is not a perfect country (like no can be), but in all honesty, it is a very loved country both for its nature and native culture. Norwegians are rather well spoken of so to speak.
Compared to Sweden, Denmark and Finland, Norway is often described as the best country in many ways. BUT it is indeed THE most expensive country in while Scandinavia to live in, and that can't be an understatement. Yes you earn a lot of money there on academic level jobs, and many work conditions are top-notch - but the caviat is the high living expenses are near cruel.
Most people who live/work in Norway closer to the boarder drives 1-2 hours over to Sweden every week to stock up on groceries and needes and other supplies because everything is so expensive!
The Scandinavian left are so obsessed with insane high taxes on near evrything. Sure, one can accept it on alcohol and tobaco, but Public TV/Radio tax, Gasoline tax (insane high), electricity (ridicules when much can be produced by there own), purchases tax, rent tax, and then the insane traffic taxes are nothing but just that, INSANITY.
The taxes to buy a car, the yearly taxes to own a car, road tax ec. are all to high. I know a lot of European countries sits in the same boat!
The absolute worse is how irresponsible the tax money is used - the public TV/Radio tax is argaubly the worst because compared to the other ones, this is NOT needed to live and when the media is so left-wing parted it further makes the case of that tax BS. And having these lunatic green parties of extremists run around and want people to be poor and misserable is disgusting.

Even crazier considering Norway has access to about $50 Billion USD worth of dividend payment from the sovereign wealth fund each year. Super greedy government...
This gives them Emirati problems, which pretty much guarantees eventual endemic dysfunction. Not a place to raise future generations of capable people.
