HI Matt, yes - the rear diffuser does actually work! The air passing under the Golf R will use the rear diffuser to pass air over the fins, aiding in stabilizing the car during hard cornering and even at high speeds in a straight line. Though it's not a massive amount, Tesco... every little helps!

Those cupholders are in my in-laws '06 Passat and they are absolutely fantastic. Wish more cars had a similar design. It keeps smaller cups and cans from moving around while also being able to fit larger ones. And works flawlessly after 15 years
The rear of the MK8 is really nice. The front though...idk, it just reminds me of new Toyota Corollas. Will choose another MK7.5 or MK6 over it that for sure.

The color changes depending on the sunlight, so it looks more dark blue/purple on overcast days and it lightens up considerably on sunny days. The VW R blues have always been like this.

It’s because the shots that are close-ups, for example, the stick test, are done at a different time than the long review. Probably because it’s hard to get a close-up shot and an overview shot at the same time, without seeing cameras in the frame..if that makes sense :)
Hallelujah Finally my favorite man tested this thing and thank you for that. I'm sure you'll do a drift and vs videos soon. Just perfect and once breaks in should do under 4 seconds and 12 seconds quarter mile, and that's without a stage 1 tune . I would order the non performance pack and right away get fatter wider Michelin tires on the same rims and stage 1 apr with fart and bangs and that will also raise the top speed to the max and some ceramic tints all the way around. All I hope now is for Chris Harris to test drive it I think they fixed the problems my mk7 r had, its obvious Also Matt please let us know if the color is any purple at all or its just the camera tint

picked up my new mk 8 golf r yesterday in place of my mk 7,looks wise the new car is much more pleasing to look at to me but each to their own. The wheels are much nicer than my old cadiz ones. The interior is much better apart from the seats. The brakes on my mk 7 were good but the brakes on the new car are much stronger. Handling is totally different to the mk 7 and in a better way, cant say about the performance because the engines not run in yet but i sense its a big step up
Been proven, the new 8R is running around 340ps, pretty swift with the gearing set up as well, the A45 struggles to keep up despite its power advantage, can’t wait to get mine, week 7 since order, still no build date, apparently it’s due to the extras! 😂
Loved all the Mk7 Golfs but the Mks8 just feel like a step back with a futuristic look. The cost cutting between the 7 and 8 also is documented better on TH-cam. Small things like lack of bonnet strut and borderless rearview mirrors just seem like a step backward.

Love how it looks but I am a bit upset about the reduction in interior quality. It not a deal breaker but when my Mk6 has better feeling materials inside, it makes you think.
I mean look at how the whole button assembly on the steering wheel bends when he's pressing it. No sunglasses holder? weird touch sliders to control temps and volume? Hard scratchy plastics? no 360 camera? And I don't even like how the 8 looks, either - older models still look better, especially the R models. The front just looks like it's out of a Skoda now.
honestly golf's peaked at the reworked Golf 7 ( AKA Golf 7.5). I bought a Golf 7 (the older one, because of dieselgate I got a neat price) and I wouldn't trade it for a Golf 8. My brother has Golf 6, it's very nice, if you consider the age.

@@dometr9254 EA888 has always been known as a very strong engine, particularly at the top end when a lot of other 2L turbos start to run out of puff. I think this aspect has a greater effect on the times than the peak power - peak figures are somewhat meaningless if the rest of the power curve is dreadful. My dad's mk7 was dyno'd at 295bhp and then 384bhp after a stage 1. Now it can do sub 3.7s 0-60 easily.
Take it to an actual track for real times. Those electronic timers and car's speedometers can be off. I know my cars run slightly different times with electronic timers vs. the track. But it gives you a reasonably close time to use for comparison (like if you add some mods and you want to see if its running faster- that's what I do a lot). BTW, I'm talking about the times my modded STi and modded Camaro SS run. My Camaro SS is faster (stock, and mod vs mod) but that's to be expected.

4.03 secs in a golf! And supercars have thrice the amount of cylinders for impracticality when driving fast. I always believed that supercars were made for showboats.
0-60 became less relevant today for describing performance. small engines and well matched auto transmission can put the most of that power down and bring the 60 times also quite low. supercars are still limited by grip otherwise they would go down to 1-2 seconds to 60 :). But supercars can pull just as savage also above 100 mph unlike this golf... so no, not even close to supercars in performance, or price for that matter. But they are built for different purposes anyway... and both classes have their very good purposes.
@@TTGT2000 Except you can mod this car to outclass any of those supercars. So where does the value come from? Don't try to justify supercars, they don't make any sense, price- or performance-wise

@@TTGT2000 I never implied that the golf r or any 4 banger matches the performance of a supercar. It's true that at stock level supercars have the advantage over in acceleration over a 100 but that's not always the case especially when it comes modified cars. There are plenty of vids on TH-cam of modified 4 and 5 bangers smoking modified supercars ie twinturbo v10's on airstrips where the majority of the race is well over a 100 in fact close if not over 200mph. And your whole thing about supercars not being able to have grip is wrong. There built to be lightweight and aerodynamic with the best tires for the best grip. The reason why they tend to be faster at higher speeds is because of the drivetrain. Smaller engine have better throttle response and hot hatches and the likes tend to have short gearing which is better for acceleration compared to supercars with bigger engines and longer gearing which is better for top speed but not necessarily faster in accelerating to top speeds in theory of course. In the end my point is you can have supercar like speed with practicality. Supercars are deff faster on most tracks but not streets. If that was the case rally cars would be supercars and not hot hatches. 😎

You reached a point where you say "Why get this when I can get a real supercar for the money?" but what you should really be asking is "Why ask so much money for a car that got successful by being affordable for everyone?" Golfs have always been budget supercars, with potential to be better - cause just as fast but more daily usable - than sportscars and supercars, while not even remotely spending the same amount of money for it. Now when you go and say "Why get a Golf for 30k and tune it a little when I can get a Porsche with 500 HP for 60k" but that completely misses the point of the customerbase the Golf is supposedly aimed at.

picked up my new mk 8 golf r yesterday in place of my mk 7,looks wise the new car is much more pleasing to look at to me but each to their own. The wheels are much nicer than my old cadiz ones. The interior is much better apart from the seats. The brakes on my mk 7 were good but the brakes on the new car are much stronger. Handling is totally different to the mk 7 and in a better way, cant say about the performance because the engines not run in yet but i sense its a big step up

Been proven, the new 8R is running around 340ps, pretty swift with the gearing set up as well, the A45 struggles to keep up despite its power advantage, can’t wait to get mine, week 7 since order, still no build date, apparently it’s due to the extras! 😂

Loved all the Mk7 Golfs but the Mks8 just feel like a step back with a futuristic look.
The cost cutting between the 7 and 8 also is documented better on TH-cam. Small things like lack of bonnet strut and borderless rearview mirrors just seem like a step backward.

Love how it looks but I am a bit upset about the reduction in interior quality. It not a deal breaker but when my Mk6 has better feeling materials inside, it makes you think.

I mean look at how the whole button assembly on the steering wheel bends when he's pressing it. No sunglasses holder? weird touch sliders to control temps and volume? Hard scratchy plastics? no 360 camera? And I don't even like how the 8 looks, either - older models still look better, especially the R models. The front just looks like it's out of a Skoda now.

honestly golf's peaked at the reworked Golf 7 ( AKA Golf 7.5). I bought a Golf 7 (the older one, because of dieselgate I got a neat price) and I wouldn't trade it for a Golf 8.
My brother has Golf 6, it's very nice, if you consider the age.

Looks like a great overall package. I just miss how special the VR6 and R32 was. I don't feel like this is equivalent. Still a great all-rounder and I'll probably buy one second hand.

@@dometr9254 EA888 has always been known as a very strong engine, particularly at the top end when a lot of other 2L turbos start to run out of puff. I think this aspect has a greater effect on the times than the peak power - peak figures are somewhat meaningless if the rest of the power curve is dreadful. My dad's mk7 was dyno'd at 295bhp and then 384bhp after a stage 1. Now it can do sub 3.7s 0-60 easily.
Take it to an actual track for real times. Those electronic timers and car's speedometers can be off. I know my cars run slightly different times with electronic timers vs. the track. But it gives you a reasonably close time to use for comparison (like if you add some mods and you want to see if its running faster- that's what I do a lot). BTW, I'm talking about the times my modded STi and modded Camaro SS run. My Camaro SS is faster (stock, and mod vs mod) but that's to be expected.

4.03 secs in a golf! And supercars have thrice the amount of cylinders for impracticality when driving fast. I always believed that supercars were made for showboats.
0-60 became less relevant today for describing performance. small engines and well matched auto transmission can put the most of that power down and bring the 60 times also quite low. supercars are still limited by grip otherwise they would go down to 1-2 seconds to 60 :). But supercars can pull just as savage also above 100 mph unlike this golf... so no, not even close to supercars in performance, or price for that matter. But they are built for different purposes anyway... and both classes have their very good purposes.

@@TTGT2000 I never implied that the golf r or any 4 banger matches the performance of a supercar. It's true that at stock level supercars have the advantage over in acceleration over a 100 but that's not always the case especially when it comes modified cars. There are plenty of vids on TH-cam of modified 4 and 5 bangers smoking modified supercars ie twinturbo v10's on airstrips where the majority of the race is well over a 100 in fact close if not over 200mph. And your whole thing about supercars not being able to have grip is wrong. There built to be lightweight and aerodynamic with the best tires for the best grip. The reason why they tend to be faster at higher speeds is because of the drivetrain. Smaller engine have better throttle response and hot hatches and the likes tend to have short gearing which is better for acceleration compared to supercars with bigger engines and longer gearing which is better for top speed but not necessarily faster in accelerating to top speeds in theory of course. In the end my point is you can have supercar like speed with practicality. Supercars are deff faster on most tracks but not streets. If that was the case rally cars would be supercars and not hot hatches. 😎

Golfs have always been budget supercars, with potential to be better - cause just as fast but more daily usable - than sportscars and supercars, while not even remotely spending the same amount of money for it.
Now when you go and say "Why get a Golf for 30k and tune it a little when I can get a Porsche with 500 HP for 60k" but that completely misses the point of the customerbase the Golf is supposedly aimed at.
