Greetings from South Africa. I fully agree as a blind person (25 years old). Physical push-buttons are the way to go. Golf 4/5/6 1.6 petrol and manual transmition for the win!
It’s a car that can have loads of problem, especially the mk6 tsi with the dsg gearbox and don’t forget the mk6 1.6 tdi with its ‘glow plug’ issues (hint, it’s never the glow plugs that need changing). It was and still is a very fun car to drive, I think it also had a stage 2 tune done to it, it was literally a seat cupra in the shape of a vw. You’d get an adrenaline rush every time you’d floor it.
Like all screen-based control systems, you can't adjust anything without taking your eyes off the road to do intricate actions that require visually selecting between widgets and hand-eye coordination to make precise contact with the screen. Back in the old days, every car control could be handled by groping for it and recognising it by its shape, while keeping one's eyes on the road. Just as using mobile phones while driving is illegal in the UK, use of touch-screens needs to be regulated too, and car companies producing cars depending on these screens need to re-think how they work.
This is very true. Mazda has researched screens and distraction. Their cars have a very minimalistic screen. Which is controlled by a knob. Some don’t like it, say it’s too basic & not much flare . But after test driving I do see it as less of a distraction. Guess it depends on your liking.
Being an interaction designer I know for a fact that tactile feedback from physical buttons offers safer and better interaction in a car than any touch screen.
For this reason I took my touchscreen media system out and replaced it with a new one with buttons for all my media functions and it's much easier to work with while driving.

Fun fact this video was actually recorded around my hometown of Castelo de Paiva, Portugal. Pretty much everyone i know has been seeing these golfs for a while now and we were wondering what they were for. Now we know.
The new Touchscreen on the Golf 8 is a terrible mistake that VW will regret. It is so much easier to adjust air-conditioning or volume by twisting a knob or pressing a button. People like to touch and feel things - not just tap and swipe. Apple recently learned this lesson the hard way when they removed the Escape key on their Macbooks and replaced the physical function buttons with a virtual panel. They were forced to reintroduce the old physical button after a public outcry. Obviously the Golf 8 designers looked at Tesla and thought they should copy them by removing all the knobs and buttons. But Tesla is a completely different value proposition driven by many early adopters - and even Tesla drivers complain about the lack of basic knobs for aircon and volume. They put up with these faults because the rest of the Tesla cars are so good. I own a Golf 7 which I absolutely love. I chose it over a BMW 1 series and a small Mercedes because it is so much better for everyday driving. But I will certainly not upgrade to a Golf 8 because I don’t want to have to deal with that ridiculous new virtual dashboard. I am not alone in my criticism on this point - numerous car reviewers have complained how difficult it is to use this new dashboard. It’s such a shame because everything else about the new Golf 8 seems great. But that virtual keyboard is a dealbreaker. Hopefully, VW will reintroduce physical buttons in the Golf 9 - like they did with the new Audi 3, which now features physical buttons again for aircon.
That interior looks way way cheaper than my 2019 Golf Highline. The LCD screen looks really cheep, and I prefer to have real buttons. If I want my heated seats on I just press the heated seat button. Try navigating a touch screen while driving city streets in Taiwan.
I was almost sure to replace my current mk7 with the mk8 until I had the chance for a test drive. Trying to change ac temperature or turning on the heated seats while driving turned out to be pretty dangerous because you can't do it without browsing through menus on the touch screen. In addition to the heavy use of hard plastics the test drive was pretty sobering and I decided to do a direct comparison with the new Mazda 3. Result: I bought the Mazda.
It's pretty controversial. I personally prefer it, but I do agree that I am not the majority of the customers and I am never going to see that front again.
@Blaze Vasquez Whats funny is that people have been bitching about ANY new golf they introduced. Its either ugly, boring, uninspired etc etc. Same thing happened with MK VII, and all of a sudden everyone loves it! What the hell happened in the meantime?
Yes, lets lose the normal, standardized knobs and switches that are intuitive and replace them with barely functioning touch buttons and convuluted smartphone menus. How's the backlight bleed on the rev-counter? lol

The new ones aren't so good, my sister has got a brand new Golf 8 (9.1.20) with a gas engine and stickshift, she absolutely hates it, everything is touch button and on several occasions the electronic gizmos made the car do strange things when driving ( almost causing the car to smash into the sidewalk on one occasion) she can't wait to get rid of it and gives it 6 months tops.

7:15 why does this sound familiar lol
11:36 because you have changed the back to front parking
That interior looks way way cheaper than my 2019 Golf Highline. The LCD screen looks really cheep, and I prefer to have real buttons. If I want my heated seats on I just press the heated seat button. Try navigating a touch screen while driving city streets in Taiwan.
Dieselgate strikes again and forever moving forward.

Wise choice! These VW cars have no soul anymore.
12:20 that guy in the van is starring at Matt like he is crazy 😂
Vw is probably going to change the front end in a year or two once they realize customers don't like it.
I really hope they do!
It's pretty controversial. I personally prefer it, but I do agree that I am not the majority of the customers and I am never going to see that front again.
I think it's too late to change until the mid cycle refresh? Not too thrilled for the new exterior styling.
@Blaze Vasquez Whats funny is that people have been bitching about ANY new golf they introduced. Its either ugly, boring, uninspired etc etc. Same thing happened with MK VII, and all of a sudden everyone loves it! What the hell happened in the meantime?
They won’t.
I don’t want an iPad in my car I just want to focus on driving.
Just look to a Mazda 3 .The interior of that is so much better than the new Golf . Will I swop my Mk7 for the Mk8 ? Er no ...

I bought a brand new Golf van in 1988, it had a 1300cc gas engine with a 4 speed manual gearshift, it covered in excess of 197,000 miles and NEVER broke down, and NOTHING ever went wrong, only had to replace tires and brakes when worn and the muffler a couple of times.
