LOVE my SX70 It takes amazing moon shots!!! I do wildlife photography. Beautiful photos for sure. You just need to learn how it works...and practice... GREAT camera. I have had no problems with it. I set mine to vivid mode for all of my work. BEAUTIFUL colors, that Canon is famous for. If you decide to buy one, you won't be disappointed!!!
Great video. I ran started using the P1000 recently when I upgraded my photography suite. As a private investigator, surveillance is my bread and butter, and the super zoom is tremendous. I can be so far away and still get perfect shots. Really opens up a lot of options for me. Your tips were a great help, and I'll make sure and subscribe. I'm fortunate to have come across this video. First thing i imagine would be made easier by those cameras is private investigator work, they'll never know you were even there.

I am an elderly bird observer and sketcher with weak wrists so your friendly, non techie information and superb videos have provided the practical knowledge I was desperately seeking. Listen all of you guys: It is not the guitar but the guitarrist what matters. Cameras are obviously important but the most important thing is you. The same principle goes to photography. I have seen photographers with 20.000 + dollars cameras and not knowing what to do with it and taking really bad pictures. And also I have seen people with a lot less expensive equipment to win a national award competition (like me). So to smell opportunities and to have a good sense of composition and editing. To improve and to understand the potential of your lenses is what really matters. If the lens is 1000mm Never! take a picture with the full capacity of the lens because it will be rubbish. This camera can take National Geographic pictures if you want!
As I said I've sold videos to all the major documentary outlets over the years, but photos generally are not publication quality unless the subject or circumstances are very unique and interesting - that does trump routine shots of quality often. Yes, with effort and practice you can get great photos with the cehap superzooms especially if its a sit or blind like I said in the review where you can tilt the odds in your favor. Personally I will never carry a heavy/expensive kit because you lose to many spontaneous shot/videos. I ended up buying the SX70 and still using my SX60 even the P1000 was a bit big/bulky for my liking. BB

EXACTLY!! It isnt the camera but the know how of the photographer. How to use your camera properly and your photo editor. Yes, it takes practice AND patience. Someone asked Ansel Adams, the all time great photographer, HOW he gets such perfect captures. He said.. "I just changed where I was standing." It's all in lighting and perspective. And, like I mentioned...Patience.

Great common sense discussion of bridge camera choices! I’m a birder who has used p&s super zooms for over 10 years. My main objective is to document & enjoy my discoveries. I’d rather zoom in on a bird with my camera rather than with binoculars. I sent my sx50 off to Canon to repair a broken lcd screen. They charged me $100 for repair & sent me a new sx60 instead of repair. 😍 I totally agree that it is worth sacrificing pixels for the better opportunities 🐦
Thank you for this video! I was in the market for a new camera and got the Canon SX70 two days ago. I’m an amateur and my last camera was Panasonic’s LUMIX FZ80. It served me well for 4.5 years. I wish I’d seen your video when I was comparison shopping - it would have made my decision so much easier!
But with that being said, I’m happy I did decide on the SX70 because all the points in your video are exactly what I want from a video camera.

I am leaning toward getting the SX70 now because it will be much like my old friend the SX60 - I'm trying to remember how many times I wished I had more zoom than 65x optical and it wasn't many versus the awkwardness and weight of the P1000. There have been many times I've gone handheld for several consecutive full 16 minute 4GB videos on a good subject with the 60XS. I don't think that would be much fun with the big Nikon. Only real reason would be if you were going to be in situations where a tripod can be used with the much bigger Nikon.

Consider Kodak PixPro AZ901, does not have the weight and price of the P1000 but zooms to 1920mm.
@@simmo303 I doubt the AZ901 would be considered in this case because he's looking for an upgrade in capability, especially in video. the AZ901 is more comparable to the Nikon P900 in terms of features and price. The AZ901 only has 1080p video resolution, so it's not going to be much of an upgrade compared to either the Canon SX60 or the Nikon P900.
The Canon SX70 and Nikon p1000 both have 4k video, which is a great thing to consider for upgrading capability for video. At that point, you have to think whether the doubling of the zoom capability is worth the significant increase in cost as well as weight. The Nikon p1000 is almost 3x the weight of the SX70.

Also, something to consider is whether your primary focus is going to be video or photos. The SX70 and P1000 will both do great with video, the p1000 will likely excel at photography because it just has a better feature set such as a hotshoe for external flash, a faster lens and shutter speed, and a few other things mentioned in the comparison review linked above.
If you need something at a reasonable price point that has excellent video capability, I definitely think the SX70 seems to be a good choice if the extra zoom isn't needed.
I just don't see the Kodak PixPro AZ901 being much of a competitor to the Canon SX70 or the Nikon P1000 when it comes to video as a primary focus. Even with photography, I think the p900 is the better option due to It having a hotshoe and ability to use a standard filter lens on it.
posted 12/8/18 starting to see some big price drops in SX60's but be diligent and make sure you buy an official Canon warrantied camera there are some international and dubious cameras out there at crazy low prices - be sure and check before buying off any unfamiliar website - call or e-mail about warranty. I just bought p1000. I love it... Grip is great and 4 k video is stunning. Nikon has soooo much more on board. The funny thing is I still have my old Canon sx 40 HS. My 6 year old got it now and he loves it. Cheers to all😃

We've been using the Nikon P900 for a couple years to photograph and particularly to do video of birds at a distance. That long zoom has been amazing. We've just moved up to the P1000, waiting for it to arrive soon, because it has an even longer zoom, but better yet, it does 4k video. We wanted the 4K to allow us better editing capability in terms of video post production stabilization and cropping. Prior to using the P900, we stuck to Canon cameras, and I still prefer Canon except for the fact that the P900 and P1000 give us the longer lenses.

Found this 2 years later because the P1000 was tempting me (from an old SX50)... and kept getting distracted by the excellent bird video instead of paying attention to the points you made :-) Ironically, none of these cameras have been updated since then, so it looks like the SX70 is still a top choice...
Yes, and Nikon and Canon don't appear to be in any rush to update these specialty superzooms. My SX70 continues to work fine! BB

The most honest and fair review about the P1000 and all the superzoom bridge cameras.
Thankfully times have changed and somewhat professional grade quality is "affordable".
I enjoy for example very much a 600€ (2nd hand) Sigma 150-600C and a Canon EOS R7 giving me some sort of "superzoom" capabilities with effective 240-960mm uncropped and 1800-2300mm in 4k60 crop video. The R7 is ofc a bit more on the expensive side but in overall you can get a nice setup for wildlife with some zoom capabilities easily for 1000-1500€, 2000€+ if it should be a bit more modern, 3000-5000€ at least when it should be new, modern and full frame.
I was once really interested in a superzoom, but the price was much too high and they were just huge plastic junk devices (at least they felt and looked like that) especially the P1000 was much too big and heavy.
I would always prefer a interchangeble lens camera over anything fixed if we talk about bigger cameras or basically a "lens" with some sort of slow smartphone electronics and a smartphone sensor attached to.
Just the advantage of being able to make the camera compact with a proper lens make superzoom lenses and the P1000 pretty bad in overall.
I mean for travel some kind of more or less "compact" 18-200 or 18-300, or a Sigma 60-600 which does also nearly everything but weights just 3,x kg is interesting, but i personally use mainly "regular" zooms like 10-20mm or 17-55 2.8 on APS-C, sometimes a compact 28-135 on full frame, teles for wildlife or really often primes like 50mm or 100mm but 1.4 to 2.8 aperture lenses.
Yeah.... aperture... another problem on the P1000:
4,3-540mm 2.8-8
resulting in effectively looking 24mm F16 to 3000mm F44, sounds terrible? Yeah it is as many footage shows. Im even not that happy with 800mm F11 and often i prefer my 600mm F6.3 zoom lens for more pleasing out of focus background (and i still wish i could afford a 300mm 2.8 or 500mm F4)
I have an R6 with a Tamron 150-600 that work good together, but I still use my Canon SX70HS a lot as it is so easy to carry. BB
P1000 has 2.2x them maximum zoom with the cost of 2.3x the weight and 2x the price. Clearly the SX70 HS is more balanced as a camera. P1000 is for those who want the maximum zoom. The ultra-wide lens on SX70 HS also helps in general photography. I know no other compact with so wide lens.
II selected the 60 over the 70 because the 70 did not have a hot shoe - i need external flash capability
I just did a run and gun trip with P1000.
Super happy with the results.
But. If your tripod is not the high end very smooth moving tripod you better off with P950. Reason you will not utilize the extra zoom without high end equipment.
If all your videos are going to be 1080p post processing you can take that SX70 at 65x zoom 4K and crop it by 2x to get your 130x optical zoom without loss of quality. Thats what I did with the Nikon B700. I now have the P1000 and if I do the same with it I get 250x optical zoom. I agree with you about picture quality. Picture quality on the P1000 lacks detail in my opinion but the video is really good. Its still better than a cell phone though.

Interesting! But how do you crop the video? cropping a rectangular section in the video 's screen using a standard video editor??
That's an interesting idea of course the 4K will lend itself to more severe cropping without significant loss of quality like 1920 and the 4K still option is there as well.
For absolute zoom its P1000. No other choice.
But what made me go for a B700 was that i'd seen photo's of equal quality to its bigger brothers and after getting some cans of food that weighed the same as the P1000 😀 i realised i didn't want that much weight when i went on long walks.
Coming from a 24x zoom camera, 60x is a big difference but 60 to the 83 of the 900/950 isn't that big a jump. Going for the P1000 yeah, that is a fair leap in zoom but just not the sort of weight i want to be carrying.
But if you don't mind the weight and extra money then its really not a debate.

I would say bridge cameras are slowly beginning to compete with dslrs in terms of convenience and alongside video/photo editing software can create near-perfect photos and videos. DSLRS will always be top of the pile but are always less convenient to carry and use. The sensor size has always been an issue but it seems technology is overcoming the limitations of smaller sensors. 18:12
And for the average person who mostly posts on social media and occasionally makes small prints, sensor size isn't even a huge issue. The only real problem is not being able to get shallow dof. 1" sensors is really all I need.
For many, the acts of taking photos or peeking at distant objects are a lot of fun, so sensor size again is probably secondary to ease of carrying and zoom.
I love my SX60 and wouldn't trade it out for a P900 or P1000...not even an SX70! The 1080@60fps works perfect for me. I get awesome videos, plus, don't forget the MACRO capabilities! Very nice ultra close-ups! Crystal clear with bright colors! Beautiful videos and photos!
Hi, I need to make a decision for my 14 year old daughter. She wants zoom for red tails in trees and osprey over water. Some flying bird pictures. I bought her the t6 I cabin and she hates it. She isn’t ready for lens changes. She has a canon power shot sx530 and she loves it! It takes beautiful pictures for a small camera at a little price. She won’t part with it, but I want her to have an upgrade as she gets better and a little older. I was gonna get the Nikon, but she has never used another brand and loves canon’s easy settings. But again the zoom and quality is important to her. She gets upset when the camera takes a bluish shade and likes her clear crisp pictures. In my opinion I thought the canon power shot 70, but you love the 60. Any suggestions would be truly appreciated. I have no camera experience at all. Just looking for my daughter a future wildlife photographer at an amateur level.

I do wildlife photography and the ZOOM feature on this one is superior to my SX530. I document the red tail hawks and eagles. Can't wait to get my SX70! It arrives tomorrow. @signsofautumn5915 the canon is good sharp clear but the lens on nikon is sharper.
As a blogger (Central Ohio Nature) I enjoyed your down to earth review even though I typically shoot stills often while on long hikes. With that in mind, even though I'm giving up a considerable amount of zoom, I've opted for the Panasonic FZ200 and then a FZ300 due to their fast lenses and good optical performance. Thanks much!
I own both the P900 and the Canon SX60HS and will probably retire the both in favor of the Canon SX70. Yes, 4K video is great but I'm looking forward to the upgrade of the EVF in the SX70 and the rocker switch focusing on the barrel of the Canon as well. The P900 has a great lens but probably the worst EVF I've ever used. The P1000 is huge, dwarfing the P900. I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of that 3,000mmm P1000 lens without a tripod. In short, I'd rather carry the Canon. It's a better balanced camera.
I agree about the SX70 and have decided in favor of it recently simply because I know it is a capable camera with sufficient zoom that I will enjoy carrying and using and get many more good videos on the fly compared to lugging the P1000 - its hard enough to hand hold on a subject at 65x basically impossible at 125x with a 2+ pound camera. Now if you had say a nest 100 yards away and were using a tripod then the P1000 would make sense or in a blind but blinds are usually close enough that 65x is plenty.

@@MyBackyardBirding Agree, 65X is enough to hand hold. Birthday last week and XMas almost here, I am ordering the SX70, prices down a bit now and frame grabs from 4K will be better that the SX60. Thanks for you vids and advice. Sometimes do not want to lug my DSLR and 500 Canon about.
@@brianthomas6500 Same here. Dslrs are cumbersome for quick captures! I will use both for different needs. And the...I don't feel like using this camera today...moods. LOL I am retiring my SX530HD, as I have used it for 5 years and although it can still take decent photos, the quality has diminished. So, this one .. SX70 .. will give me what I am needing right now. 👍

I would probably go for one of the 1" superzoom bridge cameras if you have the money. The larger sensor will allow for better image quality in low light scenarios being a nice all-in-one solution. You will lose some zoom distance, but 20 to 25x optical zoom is still very impressive.
I'm on a slower upgrade path, and upgraded from a Canon SX20 to a Sony RX10 III and the difference in image quality is insane. But I have to say that the Canon firmware / menu system is quite superior to Sony's offering.
Interesting to hear from another diligent user of Canon Powershot SX series. I've had the SX30, SX50 and SX60 (2014 - today). I didn't jump on the SX70 train as I thought it was too similar to the SX60. I don't use video, but have taken 65 000+ images with my SX60. Not the best image quality, rather slow and needs a lot of light, but good compromise camera for documenting wildlife (from insects and flowers to birds and mammals). It is small enough to carry in a backpack every day.
I'm hoping for a successor of the SX70 to replace my SX60 ...
The sx70 has some problems with the new smaller battery, wish they would have kept the same ones in sx40 and sx60. The battery will just go dead on a long video and sometimes corrupt or just not save the file in progress - not good and never happened with sx60.
I enjoyed your video and your down-to-earth logic honesty. One thing that I would have done differently is put onscreen writing to let viewers what camera took the footage they are seeing, since your monolog was not in sync with what was showing on screen.

Video Color is especially good in the golden hours - all struggle in bright sunlight and high shade/sunlight contrast which happens a lot filming in heavy cover.

Using the term "power" for zoom ratio is somewhat misleading. For example, you say that the P1000 125 is almost twice that of the SX70 65, but the Canon starts wider and ends at less than half the focal length of the Nikon so the effective max zoom "power' of the P1000 is 3000 to Canon's 1365 which is closer to 2.2 times as much "power".
Not true because he missed the fact that in 4k video, the SX70 do a crop of the sensor so results in about 1,35x zoom, so results in about an equivalent to 1800mm, so close to the P950
@@PTDavidRodrigues My point was that you can have 100 to 1 zoom that doesn't have as narrow a field of view (effectively magnification) as a 10 to 1 or 10 X zoom that starts at a longer length. Also, the Nikon uses a 4:3 sensor and when one shoots 4K 16 by 9 aspect ratio, there is also effectively a sensor crop. In any event, the statement remains true for stills. If you want to muddy the waters further, you can argue about how many times digital zoom each has and cropping in post.
Your advice to grab still photos from 4K video is very helpful. I was thinking I didn't need 4K but I will rethink that!

Smaller is best in my opinion as cumbersome cameras become a limitation in their own right. Also in urban environments the P1000 kind of makes you a target where as the Canon is more everyday looking ?

Tried both the cameras but the early version, SX50. Which is still working now. I would go for SX70 firstly value for money small and light to carry it,the optics is better than others bridge cameras. It can shoot in RAW files also. P900 has no RAW shooting Maybe a santa might appear this winter.
Chinlop's eye considering their small sensors, do you think RAW is worth it?
@@pintusandika8398 I have the SX60 and always shoot raw. More options in Canon DPP software. Thinking about the 70 for 4k vid and frame grabs, not bad with the 60 but 4k will be much better.

One issue with the Nikon's is that they do not have a servo for continuous focus for taking photos which makes it almost impossible to take any action shots of wildlife in motion. I purchased the P950, loved the features but returned it because of the lack of AF-C.
One thing p1000 is missing is, 120fps @1080p slowmode, 70hs wins
I was on the fence since my SX50's zoom isn't working right anymore and have to get a new camera. I was considering the P900 or the SX70. Your video is excellent (as a birder, love seeing the images and hearing the info) as it helped me decide to continue with Canon and get the SX70. I once watched a TH-cam video that explained that your eyes only see in 1080p at 30fps anyway, so every camera that now shoots in 4k is effectively a waste of space. I don't know how much truth there is in that, I'm just throwing it out there for the sake of argument. As far as the zoom is concerned, it's a moot point for me personally, because I struggle to hold a 35x zoom steady, having had a stroke, so a 65x or above would, for me personally, be a waste of time unless I used a monopod. A very informative video by the way.
I believe that we can see up to 60 fps. We can definitely see beyond 1080p, that's why you notice the stark difference between the two when it comes to televisions.
Shooting at 60fps gets you a lot more options when editing to slow down and extend the playback smoothly and highlight action that happens in the blink of an eye.
60fps is a huge difference in motion videos. Surprised this is brought up, not 1999 anymore where 60fps was a mythical thing.
Hi, I have a 14 year old daughter that loves wildlife and photography since age 7. She has a canon power shot SX530. She wants more zoom, but is used to her canon powershot. I bought her a canon t6 I and she HATED IT. She said it’s confusing. So my question is for zoom or canon comfort. Which camera would make her happier? Like I said she loves her comfort zone with the canon bridge camera, but is begging for zoom for the osprey on the distant waters as well as red tails high in trees. She also takes butterfly and moth pictures close up. Please help me out. I’ve put this off for a year. Canon PS 70 or Nikon 900 or 1000. Thank you
If she is used to canon I'd stick with the SX70 - I have a Canon T5i and I hardly ever use it - and you need to buy a big heavy telephot for it to get results - just use the superzooms - easy to grab and go and shoot! BB
You can't have it all sir...it's allready amazing that Canon fits a x65 zoom in such a small body...if you want larger zoom..., than the body will extend also...why do you think that the P1000 is almost 2x bigger than the P900?I'm sure Canon is capable to make a camera with x125 zoom also but..than the body will be as big as the P1000,gr.
I use a Panasonic Lumix G7 with a 100-300 mm II telephoto with optical stabilization for stills of birds in my backyard. I sometimes take videos. It is far too difficult to lug around heavy equipment that costs between five and ten thousand dollars. I used a Canon S95 in Europe but only had 3X optical zoom. Something in between these two solutions would be ideal to carry but have a greater zoom.

But is 125x really needed? Which looks rather bad (youtube vids) and is twice as expensive, very bulky and heavy. I'm more interested in sx70, let us know what you choose.

Got the p1000 and i can't stop using it now. It's so much fun and the zooooooom. 3000mm images are crisp and clear tho.
Mike u r right because zoom above 60x is useless as atmosphere becomes barrier . Sx70 can click better quality pictures than Nikon p1000 . So u can compromise with zoom and prefer quality first ✌️. Moreover p1000 is very heavy as u said .

it all comes down to the budget.
have 1000$? buy p1000.
have little less ? buy sx70.
still less? buy p900.
even less? buy sx60.
nikon b700 is also an excellent choice for about 300$,it has got 4K 30 fps and 20MP, 1/2.3 sensor.

What I am looking for please check me out for best choice. I want to have a pocket telescope. Something powerful but small fit in your coat pocket kind of thing. I want to look at the world I can normal see normally.
I want to see for myself the curve of our planet or at least test Pythagoras's theory.
The fact that it will also provide awesome videos and I can pull amazing singles for the videos is all just icing on the cake. Now it might be a little overkill for what i want but I doubt I will ever regret my choice. For the kind of zoom power I want it will need great image stabilization. I used to hunt and photograph wild mushrooms. At that time 5 megs was a big deal but still i wished those photos had been taken with something better. I think the P1000 will not disappoint and at 71yrs old it could be the last camera ill ever want or need.
If you have another suggestion i'm all ears.

I’m also keeping my eye on Panasonic (FZ80) since it has 4K at a great price. Panasonic has great 4K features and video image. No flip screen or mic, but I have other cameras for all-around use. Nice video & samples.
P1000 is the best, but its big. The best combo for bird photography is P1000 plus the RX10 IV

SX70HS will rule the market for years...
All scenery Modes are noise reducded. Three Portrait Modes. Lovely Selfie Mode over the specs , up to F20 to F30.

RX10 V is the best option if you have 2,000$ burning a hole in your pocket otherwise the P1000 if you don't have 1,000$ then the SX70

With a 1inch sensor..for superzoom....the lens would be a few times bigger than the lens on the P1000...

You are wrong I have been doing Wildlife Photography for 48 yrs , I had the old SLR cameras , bought my first digital camera in 2009 and instantly fell in love with it but as time they kept improving them. I have a friend who does Wild life Photography , I bought a canon sx50hs while he has a canon with a giant zoom lens some of my pictures are actually better ! Others yo can’t tell the difference ! I isn’t the Camera i’s the person taking the picture ! Infact a lot of times he can’t get the picture because the Subject is too close or it’s too dark ! I love that camera ! I need a New camera soon but I won’t spend 10 grand !... oh it’s also in the developing also ad the Artistic eye of the person taking the picture ! Which I Have !
I generally don't disagree with what you say if you remember what I said in my discussion, I'm personally sold on the superzooms and finally decided to buy a SX70 and continue to use my SX60 - hell my old SX40 still takes great video except for the lens noise. But my caveat was to those who were going to go pixel peeking and expecting professional photos out of the box with their first superzoom. Yes, with effort and practice you can get great photos with the cheap superzooms especially if its a sit or blind like I said in the review where you can tilt the odds in your favor. Personally I will never carry a heavy/expensive kit because you lose too many spontaneous shots/videos.BB

I am looking for a camera for pictures at my son's baseball games, family vacations, etc. I want to be able to zoom in on a player and get a good clear shot. How will the Canon SX70 do when taking a picture of a batter swinging at a pitch?
The Nikon P950 is the other option but I'd rather not spend that much especially if the camera is more than I will use.

Welcome to the Backyard. Yes, I use the primarily the SX60 and 70 mainly because they are lighter and easier to carry around and have used Canon for years. It just depends - if maximum zoom in is your highest priority then the P1000 fits the bill. BB
@@MyBackyardBirding Your videos definitely have me sold on the SX60/SX70! One of my best friends highly recommended the P900 for birding, so I am debating between the SX70 and the P950. From what I have gathered, it seems like I would be spending that extra $$ on the P950 for the zoom alone; the SX70 appears to be superior in most other areas. It's such a tough decision! I feel like if I could try them both out for a day I would know exactly which one worked best for me.

Great video .Just broken 2 cameras ( both on their way out ) Like you I enjoy video work and birds ...Big problem for me is not keen on carrying loads of weight and from watching this Canon comes lighter .Hope so .I've never used Canon .Love Nikon but as a rather light weight lady carrying heavy cameras won't work.Just love making video ...To recap ,do the SX60 & SX 70 have a mic port ? Got the SX70 but only two good features Zoom and weight .Menu system is awful and when making video one can't take a still at same time .Unlike you have never used Canon .It's going back and am now looking between Nikon and Sony .Weight is more but quality better ,Best start building stronger arms lol
Just to let anyone who is still looking at superzooms know, if you watch Adorama site closely, they occasionally have P1000 refurbs on sale at great prices. I bought mine for $640 and can’t tell that it’s now new. Added a couple aftermarket batteries and external charged for less than $50. Now looking at boom or wireless mics. For under $1000 can outfit a great super zoom rig.

I only use the P1000 to look at the moon and stars.
I dropped sx70 in to water. sent to for repair: they offers a repair price which is 20% more than the proce of new one :)

Good point, the photo editing software is so much better today and canon and Nikon don't show much interest in updating these superzoom cameras.
I have a Nikon P900. One of the things that I regretted about is that the P900 does not support RAW files. Some people tell me that with superzooms RAW is not really an advantage since they small sensors. What do you think?
Good point, even my old SX60 shoots Raw and Raw +Jpeg. However I can honestly say that I have rarely used Raw and didn't see a big difference I have focused mostly on video. I discuss this in the review about 4K 30fps frame captures as well.
@@MyBackyardBirding .CR2 converted into .jpg using DxO Optics Pro is a huge improvement on camera produced .jpg. Even Canon's own DPP does a better job.
I would agree. I have the P1000 and with a 1/2.3 sensor RAW is for ad copy more than anything else.

Excellent review! But cheer up! The SX60 & SX70 zooms are both 65%. HOWEVER, the MegaPixels have increased from 16.1 to 20.3, effectively increasing the zoom even though both say 65%.
The increase in mp is insignificant. It's not linear but geometric so nowhere near as good as it the numbers look.
Bought the SX60HS Returned it went back to my SX50HS they moved everything around and for the money the sharpness was not there !
@@stevesanzari7294 Almost agree but you really do need to have a loupe for the screen as the evf is so awful. I could be tempted by the '70 just for its evf. Only used '50 left now. RAW, of course.

I'm struggling to decide SX70 vs P950 to replace my 8-years old SX50. Some reported that P950 has better len and faster auto focus, and its manual focus mechanism seems more intuitive than SX70. However I'm not sure if the 1kg weight will work for me, as I mainly bird while trekking in forest or mountain trail, mostly handheld.
the video at 6:44 and 17:50 was handheld and the hawk at 17:50 was filmed with the SX70. Prices on both of these cameras have gone up quite a bit during recent inflation. Manual focus is probably easier in practice on the P950 if you are in a rush to capture something quick the SX70 autofocus needs a lot of practice in advance. For me the SX70 has been a workhorse and great camera, but once in awhile it will struggle to focus in auto in a cluttered environment. Boils down to preference and weight. BB

If you anticipate filming from a pretty good distance for example they may no let you get too close to the river crossings etc then this is what you need but you need to think about a tripod or monopod or how you would hold it steady to get good stable video and pictures at such high zoom power. The Canon SX70 is another choice and what I use most of the time - its primary advantage is good zoom power in a light package but not the reach of the P1000. The Sony cybershot 25x is considerably higher in price and very much lower in zoom power and if you were going to be close this would be good quality, but 25x will be very disappointing if you are far away. Good Luck and if you are not a subscriber you should consider it. BB
The thing they keep omitting is the macro performance of the sx60 hs. I shoot flowers mostly and have found this camera to have excellent macro capabilities. The problem is the light sensitivity for with macro photography as with all photography this is a big issue.
If one has the same size of cmos chip and the same size lens and one adds more pixels then one has to lose light sensitivity, assuming every thing else is equal. This is clear in the ISO ratings of the sx60hs compared to the ISO ratings of the sx70hs, as I understand what the sx70hs ISO options are. The jump from 16mps in the sx60hs to 20mps in the sx70hs has dropped the ratings of the ISO in half for an increase quality of resolution that is questionable when looking at a single picture. I must note that I never shot with an ISO of 6100 or even 3200 but usually no more then 400 ISO so I do not know how much sensitivity, as measured by nose, I would lose, though I have drooped the 16mps to a lower mps in an attempt to get less nose in my sx60hs. I have had cameras in the past that had 12mps that took great shots and did very good in low light situations. Unless you have more glass I think it hard to power more MPS given the present day cmos chips.

Enjoyed your video. I've been using a sx40 for a couple years for backyard birding (taking vids and photos of bluebirds in my backyard. I'm passing that one on to my daughter and am looking to replace it with either the sx60 or sx70. Can you recommend one over the other. I'm seeing about a $100 dollar difference which is not really a factor for me. Just would like your recommendation. Thanks
We'll I'd have to pick the SX70 if the 100 buck is not a factor. I'm getting ready to buy one myself now, I tried to get a little more life out of the SX60 but its motors and servos are just worn out after a few million miles! BB

My camera cuts of way to much while I am videoing. I thank something is wrong sx60hs.
Standard image ratio is 4X3, when shooting vid. it will probably go 16X9. that why it looks a thinner view.
One must have 2000$ in his pocket to buy one P1000 to take photos and videos, and another P1000 to charge 3 h the spare battery, since it will certainly need a lot of energy to move all that glasses.
