Nice review of this ”old” camera. I use mine mainly for documenting wildlife. Compared to a system camera it is slow and needs a lot of light. It is not expensive and the size is small enough for me to always carry it in my backpack every day. It works great for both macro photo of insects, flowers etc and telephoto of birds, mammals etc. One thing that is really annoying is that insertion of coordinates doesn’t work. I don’t know why Canon failed here because it worked well in the SX60!?
The toggle on the side of the lens operates a slower zoom that works really well with video. Of course, the zoom control located at the shutter button will also zoom at a slower rate. But, if you are not careful you may accidently zoom quickly which may not be a good look in the video.
Dude. Top notch review. I really hope TH-cam pushes your content to new viewers. Your delivery rivals top creators. I even enjoyed the corny jokes. Thanks for a very informative and easy to understand video. I am tossing up between the Nikon P950 / 1000. But after watching this, and a few other reviews, I am pretty much sold on this Canon. I currently have a Canon EOS 700D with standard lens and 55 - 250mm lens, but looking for something with a bit more zoom, mainly for wildlife and more portability than the heavy camera and lenses. Hello! I just bought this cam for personal use and photojournalism. How do I maximize the functions of this camera and how do I make the color pop more using the exposure, aperture, or other settings?
Preparing for a trip to Glacier NP and Banff Canada. Any tips for best results on landscape settings? I would like to set the C1 and C2 for Landscape and critter pics. I want to be able to zoom in on any possible animal encounters from a fair distance and still get shots that aren't too grainy. The pics from my Yellowstone visit are not as good as I had hoped. Had just recently purchased the SX70 and had not had a lot of time to play with it. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi! I have the same trip as you by the way coming up in September. A great spot for photography indeed. What I would recommend is try to avoid the temptation of using the longest zoom setting. Sometimes we feel we must use it because its "there" but in fact I have noticed a pretty significant degradation at full zoom. This is common with zoom lenses, especially ones like this which have such a long zoom range on such a small sensor, and to keep the price down, compromises must be made. So when you zoom in on those critters, try not to go to full zoom. Landscapes should be totally fine for the camera as they allow a lot of natural light in. I would suggest going full wide at 21MM to get the full advantage and try the panorama mode for shots as they can work great! Remember if you are shooting video, you will lose that wide angle in your landscapes so take plenty of photos in wide angle as opposed to videos. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hi there. Thanks for the comment. A tripod would definitely have given steadier footage but most people who buy this camera are using it casually and I wanted to show the results you can expect if using it without a tripod because in my opinion, this is how most people will be shooting. Great job!! Just watched this video after watching your video the other day on the Panasonic FZ300, out of the 2 which do you think would be the better camera please?? (or maybe get a P1000 or something similar??) Thank you very much!!
Thanks very much! Personally I think the FZ300 is a more consistent performer than the Canon. If you need the 1200mm zoom however the FZ300 will only get you half way there. If you need really an incredible zoom, then yes either the P950 or the p1000 are options (I have several videos on these cameras too). The P950 goes to 2000mm and is more manageable in terms of size and weight than the P1000. Its a bit more expensive than the Canon and Panasonic too, but I'd say if its within your budget and you don't mind a bit of extra heft, then you should consider the Nikons.. Otherwise the Panasonic still has great reach with 600mm and the images are surprisingly good. The Canon is good if there is ample light, but was a bit disappointed with the stabilization overall. I'm coming from PowerShot SX40 HS. Can you shoot a photo while taking video? I can do that with SX40 and it'll save a separate JPEG file for me. I'm considering buying this one if it has all the same bills and whistles, with improved specs.
Hi unfortunately it can’t do that exactly but it has an interesting video snapshot feature The sx70 has way better video features however ! Like 4k video
Great video! Its so in depth it puts othrr reviews to shame. Can I ask when taking video using zoom: 1. Does the camera lose focus easily on a moving subject and 2. Is the stabilization good for tracking moving subject?
Hey there ! Much appreciated for the comment - to answer your questions- as the zoom increases, the autofocus does have a tendency to hunt a bit You can see from the video that the stabilization to me was the biggest disappointment- at high zoom it’s pretty shaky so I would say for critical work , I think you might be disappointed especially if it’s a fast moving subject. Thanks again
@@techtoremember8096 hey thanks for fast reply. I guess things get tricky when its zoomed out anything more than 20x. I m using a Nikon B700 and its has disappointing videos when zoomed out and tracking moving subject. Especially in sunrise condition against the sun the auto white balance fails to correct and subject becomes over exposed while in gray skies condition the subject remains dark and under exposed. And top it off the inbuilt mic picks up internal sounds during recording. Auto focus loses subject easily if its moving when zoomed out and auto stabilization does nothing much even in HD mode only. In your experience would you recommend for shooting video of moving subject in the sky, a Panasonic Lumix FZ2500 or a Nikon P1000? Thanks once again.
Hi I have not actually used the Panasonic model so I can’t say for sure but their contrast based AF was always a problem so my guess is the Nikons will be better !
The zoom range is great but I'm still a bit dissatisfied with my SX70. Some of my shots are grainy. The sensor is just too small. I also take videos more than photos. Do you think it's a good idea to switch to Panasonic Lumix FZ1000?
I agree with you. The image quality on the camera is not the best especially when the lights get a little dim and especially when you’re at full zoom. I have not tested the Panasonic FZ 1000 but I would assume you’re going to get better results. Thank you for watching
@AnthonTech seems you and I both have been researching bridge cameras 😀. I'm definately liking the larger sensor of the fz 1000 and fz 1000 II, but think I'm leaning towards the fz 2500 if I can find one at the right price 😀
Hi I show many photo examples in the video so you can definitely judge for yourself. The camera has its flaws but if you’re using in good light then I think it’s a good value !

I live in a rural town, lots of wildlife, nature and mountain area. Would this camera be good for wildlife, such as bird photography. Or would a Panasonic fz1000 be better ?
Hi! This camera is great for any kind of nature or bird photography The Panasonic does not have the zoom range the canon has but it does have a bigger sensor and you will get a better picture. So it becomes a matter of personal preference.
@@techtoremember8096 thank you for the help. I will go for the zoom lense option. I know I will lose some detail maybe, but the zoom lense will be more helpful I think . Thank you

I ditched my Nikon p900 for the canon sx70 purely from a portability viewpoint - and I'm not disappointed. The 65x vs 80x optical zoom isn't such a big loss to me.

Yeah I’ve been hearing quite a bit on the Panasonic. I just got the Nikon p950 and am working on a review but I think I’ll look into the Panasonic too
Purchased one of these cameras after watching this superb video, can anyone recommend a case/bag for it at all please.
Literally any small canera bag will work The camera is pretty small
What about if I'm planning to use it for schooling / children pictures and traveling. Would it be good ?
Yes it should be fine As long as there is pretty good lighting
@@techtoremember8096Thank you
Which city is it? I'm watching from Italy, I've bought this camera last week and I'm learning to use it. I'm enjoying myself!
Hello my friend. This is New York City
Hope you enjoy the camera. Thanks for your comment !!
Hello
Does this camera take good photos? After testing, would you recommend it for purchase?
Regards, Cezary
Hi I show many photo examples in the video so you can definitely judge for yourself. The camera has its flaws but if you’re using in good light then I think it’s a good value !
Dziękuję za informację ..Aparat raczej w dobrej pogodzie będzie użytkowany @@techtoremember8096
Which would you say is better aSx70 or the Nikon P950 for bird photography ?
I would prefer the Nikon's longer reach and better picture quality!
@@techtoremember8096 Thank you ☺️
Please could you tell me what the print outs are that you show in some shots. Are they from a manual?
Hi. Yes if you google “canon xs70 advanced user guide “ you’ll find it !
@@techtoremember8096 Brilliant, many thanks. Despite the ‘old’ technology I love my SX70HS - thank you so much for alerting me to some of it’s features
My pleasure ! Thanks for the like
How the Focus in the SX70. Better thn the Coolpix P1000? Focus on P1000 Bad Bad Bad. And Vs the Sony RX10 Mark 4?
Sx70 is better than Nikon. Not as good as Sony
@@techtoremember8096 Wenn i Have The Sony rx10 Mark 4. buy the SX70 Just for The Zoom and WildLife Photography?
You definitely could ! It certainly was designed for that purpose
@@techtoremember8096 A and for teh Timelaps:) Love Youre Chanel. Greats From Swizerland:)
Thanks for your support. ! Love Switzerland beautiful country. Lots to photograph !
Thank you
My pleasure ! Thanks for your comment and best of luck
What about photos of people? Can you get some nice portrait (head and shoulders) shots? Or people going about their day?
Yes you can ! If you step back far enough and zoom you even get nice background blur
@@techtoremember8096 Excellent, thank you!
What type of microphone works on this camera
Thank you
Any kind with a standard 1/8” jack
Will get a SX80 ?
I wouldn’t unless they fix some of the issues
Good review But i will stick with my heavy Nikon p1000.😁😁
Haha. Yes. The quality is far better.
@@techtoremember8096 Far better? most of the videos I've seen look pretty similar at least to me, I would be awesome if you could do a video comparing the video vs video and picture vs picture quality of the SX70 vs P1000 on the same day and on the same objects.
I ditched my Nikon p900 for the canon sx70 purely from a portability viewpoint - and I'm not disappointed. The 65x vs 80x optical zoom isn't such a big loss to me.
@@shethsa i use my Nikon p1000 to look at planets and the moon.
Does Elgato 4K Camlink work on this camera?
I don't know about that specific Elgato item but the camera does have HDMI output so I would assume it should work. I would contact the manufacturer if you want to be certain, if this camera is compatible. (check website of Elgato or call)
Why is you voice is so clear? Did you use mic?
Yes. Near the end of the video I show you a test of the on-camera mic. Thank you
Very Good
Thanks
HELLOW THIS FOTO HAVE SLOW MOTION ? THANKS
Hello. In 4k there is no slow motion. 120 fps is available in 1080p
Is the sx70 good for sports and macro?
Not really for sports. Not a camera designed for high speed shooting. Macro yes you can use it for
No. You want an rx10 IV
How was the battery?
No issues. Battery life is pretty good
Hi ,Does it charge with usb ?
Hello. The battery charges on a dedicated charger, not through USB!
@@techtoremember8096 video recording quality canon sx70 vs nikon p950 vs sony rx10 ?
Rx10 is the best followed by Nikon then canon in my opinion.
@@techtoremember8096 Of the 3 options, the best video recording RX10 ?
I would say so!
The video stabilization seems terrible even compared to the Panasonic FZ80/FZ82.
Yeah that’s the biggest weakness
@@techtoremember8096 The autofocus isn't really Sony quality, either. I'd say both my tiny DSC-HX99 and my DSC-HX400V have better autofocus than this.
I pass this camera
You mean like a football ? Lol
Canon SX70 Battery capacity is too small around 875 mah👎 not better than Nikon B700 which battery capacity is 1850 mah 👍
Definitely carry extra batteries!
