I think its Really a Testament to the difficulty of a game when even After Insane grinding WITH CHEATS you can still die. It Really wants you to use all of the Tools you have at your disposal.
Not in this case, due to how your stats work you can max out you defensive stat early. So while he is dealing more damage at higher levels... he isn't having an easier time surviving attacks. This game just has low stat caps.
It's more a testament to how the game was designed. The developers obviously consider buffs and debuffs to be crucial features to the game, and really don't expect people to avoid using them. It's a show of punishment for doing so, as many have pointed out the Matador fight essentially does for beginners.
I study math in university and there's a thing called a non-constructive proof, which is a mathematical proof that doesn't show how to actually do something, but proves that it is theoretically possible. If we take this series to be a non-constructive proof, then your use of cheats is totally okay, because while you cheated in the game, you only cheated on the grinding and not on the actual boss fight, so you've proven that it's theoretically possible to beat Nocturne without buffs. QED.
I don't actually study math in university (besides the couses needed for economics), but I couldn't agree more with this. It is entirely possible to level up to 255 without cheats, so anyone with enough time could do the grind regularly and use the same strategies as the ones showed in the video to prove this can be done without cheats. Yet again, it would take so much time to do grind (knowing that the cheat multiplied exp x1000 and that there could be changes in progression related to the exp formula, its might take more than 1000 times the time it took Nyarly) that it would be wasteful to prove this point.
Bruh all you had to say was "He proved it was possible normally just with a lot of farming" but no you had to go out and make yourself sound stupid by flexing your "Math Knowledge" on an SMT video
Personally I think the cheating here is justified. All you're doing is speeding up the grind. @arthur fonzarelli How so? Its not a cheat that causes your character to have every attack one shot, render your character basically invincible or get every stat on max. Its basically speeding your progress in normal time. Even look at P4G's steam version! Are the custom difficulty sliders (Especially Gold and EXP sliders.) in that game not justified? I really hate grinding so this allows me to play the game's story at a normal pace and eliminates grinding.
@arthur fonzarelli That's really stupid lmao. It's just a single-player game that doesn't impact everyone's experience. It wasn't as if he lied and said he didn't do it without the cheating, nor does this go against the actual point of the video. It's not like he was cheating in a multiplayer game and taking away from a person's enjoyment of the game through cheating, or say, had a cheat that increased his damage and reduced the bosses' dps, he just simply increased the Exp gain because it would be annoying and repetitive to actually try out. It's just really stupid to gatekeep over such a detail.
So I'm going to take a guess at what happened with Lucifer at the end of the video: So iirc way it works is Lucifer heals at 19,999 HP or lower (well, I originally thought it was at half HP, but that's not what the wiki says, and if it was that, then what I suggest here wouldn't make sense) but on his last phase where he's super low (12k or lower, maybe 15k or lower? I don't remember) he goes into his Diarama phase and he starts using Evil Gleam again to try to charm you into a full heal on him, and with what I know about Nocturne's AI, what likely happened here is you skipped over his heal by getting him to this last desperation phase from above 20k in 1 turn as your damage values were so high. I hope that makes sense, and if anyone's reading this that knows more details, feel free to talk about it as while I have messed around with stuff in the game it's all been fairly tame and I've never done anything more than change some moves around on some dudes, or change stats with CheatEngine - most of what I know comes from reading Zombero's work and testing enemy AI quirks myself back when I had too much free time.
Speaking of Zombero, Lucifer's buffs/alterations received from the Hardtype mod includes a *very* powerful Diarama (can heal several *thousand* HP at a time). And he didn't use it at all the first time I fought (and defeated!) him. Granted, I was level 101 with level 99 demons (albeit not all of this grinding was intentional; part of it was because of the late Burial Chamber rematches, while another part was the Estoma nerf that is only undone by acquiring *Masakados.* There was a bit of intentional grinding, though, simply so I could complete the compendium and acquire Pierce to pass around).
Well I just beat the hd remake on hard (with buffs lol) and it did the no heal to me too. @arthur fonzarelli you going through the entire comment section crying cause he didn't spend weeks grinding to 255 is nothing to be proud of, go and do something with your life man, this is just sad
I'd say that using cheats to increase EXP isn't technically a cheat. All it is is speeding up something you could do normally. If grinding took you a couple hours with the cheats, it probably would have taken around a year for you to get through normally. There are people who, when they first played an older Pokemon game like Firered or something, didn't know what to do and leveled their starter to level 100 on the first route.
Not to detract from end cards as I know that they can be a valuable resource for creators to get people onto other videos they've done, but there is an extension for Chrome that will allow you to hide end cards if you feel the need to: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hide-labels-and-end-cards/jinenhpepbpkepablpjjchejlabbpken?hl=en Just in case you wanted to see the rest of the post credits stuff ;P

Mr. Green Simple: nothing beats playing a game the old fashioned way. Emulation is great and has allowed me to play games I never would’ve been able to, but I still prefer playing it on the console because it makes me feel good, even when I start getting my ass whooped.
@Grima the Fell Dragon the us releases of a few smt games are on the ps3 playstation store, like nocturne, digital devil saga 1 and 2, both raidou games, and personas 2ep, 3, and 4.
So it would appear as though at some point four months ago someone went absolutely mad in this comment section about our boy using cheats. Since then their comments seem to have been deleted, i think? I know there's no point in me saying this, but why do people get so incredibly butthurt about some dude on youtube using cheats to speed up grinding in a jrpg? I get that he didn't "really" beat the challeng, technically, becaus he cheated. Sure. But it's not like he claimed that he did it legit. In Part 3 of this series there was a pretty clear point being made that under normal circumstances you will not be able to beat this challenge. That fact still stands. And then he was like "Hey, what if I was Max level?" And then he tried it and won. And he made a point to tell us that it takes a whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooole lot of grinding. He skipped the grind. Guess what, the video would have been essentialy the same if he did grind it all legit. Only difference would be that, instead of telling us about the cheats, his grandchildren would be telling us about his grind. The result would be the same. He could have just kept the cheating secret and the only way we would have known would be a changed version of the game and a suspiciously short amount of time between uploads. I really do not get why people bother wasting their time by complaining specifically about someone else *not* wasting their own time. I am aware that there's some irony to be found in me complaining about those people, but thats a discussion for another day. In conclusion: -the challenge was proven to be beatable -No Gaming Licenses are being revoked today -Nyarly didnt waste 47 years of his liefe grinding the f#cking pixie to level 255 -The time I just spent writing this mess is time i will never get back, moving me ever closer to my inevitable demise at the hands of insanity Rant over. I really hope you have a nice day. You desereve it after reading this.

Personally never played a megaten game before, but I felt like I could still go on to play nocturne after this due to your videos being structured mainly around fights. I appreciate that. Amazing video series.
I don't really mind the cheating. The thing about video games is that no matter what, the grind is slow, painful and mundane. No one in their right mind would grind to the max level on normal standards, especially when the cap is level 255, that could take like a month or two to finish. Plus, the whole point of the challenge isn't about the grinding, you're just doing what you promised, but eliminated the grinding aspect so I don't really see it as a problem lol, as long as you can beat it without buffs and debuffs, I am A-okay with any method you do.
Man, what a journey. Ngl, I was genuinely disheartened by Part 3 -- it felt like you threw in the towel too quickly. BUT HEY HERE WE FUCKIN GO NOW HERE'S THAT AMAZING CONTENT SMT CONTENT WE EXPECT FROM YOU. Way to deliver.
I beat Persona 2: Innocent Sin only changing Personas when I got them as part of the plot, there was LITERALLY one boss that gave me ANY trouble at all, it was actually really fun and didn't need TOO much grinding, as you can get tons of Persona stats easily to make up for actual character deficits
This series was phenomenal 😁 enjoyed it alot. One thing I would love to see would be like the Persona 3 video, Persona 4 with only Izanagi? It's probably easily just as possible, but it would sure be fun to see :D
My best guess is, Lucifer is only programmed to cast Diarahan within a set HP range, say after he's lost between 40-50,000 HP for the sake of argument. If you hit him so hard he goes *BELOW* that threshold, his healing is skipped entirely. It's just a guess, but I can see Atlus programming him that way to reward individuals who actually were insane enough to grind to lvl 255.
I like to imagine Dante just showed up with a Game Genie and the Demi-Fiend just gave a dissapointed nod and took it.

Edit: If at any point its necessary to break one of these rules, Do it. But only if absolutely necessary.
Knowing them if they do this they’ll do SQQ
@@ScarceXD221 Oh my god, Imagine doing Thanatos Tower first on this challenge. That would just be painful.
@@knight123x4 think i would beat dark souls damageless before i do that
@@knight123x4 (at the end of the three towers) "Your prize is something completely useless! Like why did you even do the hardest first when you couldn't even use the ambrosia?"
We actually did not see this coming
Just yesterday I thought to myself, "maybe he could grind up to level 100. That would be a horrible grind though." You found a way, you madaman.
I didnt think we'd get a part 4, heckin neato!
heckin neato
heckin neato
Im Hecking Naoto ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
heckin neato
Heckin neato
In my playthrough Lou got down to ~20k health... And then cast Diarama, which healed him a grand total of 1300 hp. Raidou then slapped him for 1400 and I was left very confused.
I dont mind the cheat code for the leveling up as it's better than waiting for up to months for this next part to be made
NTRG In this case it's years, not months since every time you level up, you gain even less EXP from creatures. Here with the cheat, he earned the same amount of EXP everytime he leveled up making it way faster than it actually is.
I wasn't expecting a part 4! Keep up the grind and good luck on your future endeavors!
This sounds painful af
Time to raise hell itself once more.
YOUR VIDEOS BROUGHT FORTH THE SHIN MEGAMI NOCTURNE GODS!!!
NOCTURNE ON SWITCH, WOOOOO!!!!
Man needs more recognition for this time consuming feat.
The SMT FANDOM HAS BEEN SHOOK
Good to see you didnt give up man! So awesome to see a part 4. Now lets see you beat Persona 2 without spreading Rumors lol
Congrats man! Nocturne is truly a beautiful but brutal jrpg
holy shit i was not expecting a part 4. but congrats you absolute mad lad, you did it
You sought the thrill of death, but it seems death's vastness held no peace. This series has been hilarious and awesome, I can't wait to see whatever comes next!
@arthur fonzarelli why is he wrong?
>part 4. HES GOING BEYOND
"Shin Megami Tensei V would be out by then"
Ask and ye shall receive.
Nyarly toture himself part 4
Props to you for coming back to it!! Honestly you could've just let it in the no and be done with it, but I'm glad we know it is theoretically possible, albeit really hard and time consuming to accomplish 😂
I was re-watching the first three videos and then I saw this and it made me smile. Nyarly, I might not be one of your long-time fans...but damn I think you're amazing.
This series has been an utter joy to watch!!
I also think it was a positive harbinger for future events as Atlus has announced new SMT5 AND SMT NOCTURNE REMAKE trailers recently!
This was great, I learnt many things about Nocturne.
Me:opens TH-cam and see’s smt nocturne no buff/debuff part 4
Also me: maximum confusion but still instantly clicks
Damn, demi-fiend got that runback
Hey, congrats my man I'm glad you finished the challenge I was actually very impressed by this not going to lie, it was a trip.
*Now fight Demi-Fiend without buffs/debuffs on SMT Digital Devil Saga 1*
@arthur fonzarelli you going through the entire comment section crying cause he didn't spend weeks grinding to 255 is nothing to be proud of, go and do something with your life man, this is just sad
@arthur fonzarelli shut up and stop hating
@arthur fonzarelli whith you are so salty do yorself whithout cheats
@@vinitheokguy3538 The fuck that arthur dude complained?
Nice timing just before SMT V and SMT Nocture Remaster was confirmed! It’s been a great week!
Can't even see the post credits stuff because the previous videos are in my way
Same
Not to detract from end cards as I know that they can be a valuable resource for creators to get people onto other videos they've done, but there is an extension for Chrome that will allow you to hide end cards if you feel the need to: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hide-labels-and-end-cards/jinenhpepbpkepablpjjchejlabbpken?hl=en
Just in case you wanted to see the rest of the post credits stuff ;P
Have you tried turning off annotations?
@@Nyarly I'm not seeing an option to turn it off. On mobile at least
@@Nyarly I never had them on.
Wow im surprised dood
That intro looks awesome doooooood
What a journey! Im so glad its possible, hooked since the start. Cant wait for the next challenge
Great series. Here's hoping for more SMT challenge runs.
Recent events mak this video 10x better!
Well played good sir! I did not expect this to be in my inbox when I opened TH-cam tonight but here we are...impressive.
I do wonder what could have possibly stopped Lucifer from using Diarahan but hey, as you said yourself, we ain't complainin'.
Love your stuff Nyarly, keep up the good work!
Glad that there was a follow up to this! Very satisfying after thinking it wasn't possible.
I like the new splash for your channel!
Not gonna watch the video tho, haven't finished nocturne yet D: but you have my view and my like!
damn man i love these games just from watching them, and you as a content creator as a whole, thank you for the great content man
I can't believe this video is already two years old. I remember when part 1 came out.
Nocturne is being remastered and put on switch and ps4. I can FINALLY play this game!
The moment you finally reach level 255 in Nocturne
SMT V might have been released
Update: Well shit
Wow. My suggestion was just going to be that the damage scale on Normal would make Kagustsuchi’s infinite light deal 800 which would be survivable. I didn’t even know in nocturne you could grind past 99. Incredible run to still be able to beat it!
That was really impressive! =D
I may never try this kind of challenge, but really makes me want to improve in the regular game.
one of my favorite parts of all this is the clip where you show of your friend fighting against Mot lmao i think i would’ve raged hard or even just been speechless and laughed out of anger if i saw that happen to me bc ngl that’s just some hardcore bs
anyone look at the thumbnail too fast and thought demifiend had a massive dump truck because of the logo placement
i fully enjoyed this series and i’ve never even played a megaten game. good shit, man.
Was playing through the HD version while watching this. Had to pause a few times to avoid spoilers, but NEVER, and I do mean NEVER, will I ever try to do a no buff/debuff run. Holy shit. Major props to you, but I don't think I would be sane after that.
Hey Nyarly, thanks for getting me into main line MegaTen games. I've been a personal fan for a few years, and have known about nocturne, but this series has solidified my resolve into playing it.
I miss this game. I wish they made a remaster or just put it on other consoles
If you miss it, then just play it.
@Grima the Fell Dragon Download pcsx2 and emulate it.
Grima the Fell Dragon You can get brand new, unopened copies of Nocturne on eBay for $20. If that’s not a good price, then there’s no such thing as a “good price”.
I remember using a gameshark on Nocturne once. Unlocked all magatamas to the point the game item text info literally says "You cheater" lmao
This series was incredible good job on completing your challenge keep up the good work.
And then he was like "Hey, what if I was Max level?"
And then he tried it and won.
In conclusion:
-the challenge was proven to be beatable
-No Gaming Licenses are being revoked today
-Nyarly didnt waste 47 years of his liefe grinding the f#cking pixie to level 255
-The time I just spent writing this mess is time i will never get back, moving me ever closer to my inevitable demise at the hands of insanity
Rant over.
I really hope you have a nice day.
You desereve it after reading this.
Nyarly: I did it
Lady in black: He did it
Record scratch: He did it
about why running didnt work . hard mode made it impossible. you need trafuri to escape anything (posting it here since i forgot in which part it came up)
Part 1, in Amala Network
Personally never played a megaten game before, but I felt like I could still go on to play nocturne after this due to your videos being structured mainly around fights. I appreciate that. Amazing video series.
12:05 maybe a certain amount of turns and damage might've had to pass for Lucifer's AI to go for Diarahan. But hey a win is still a win.
I was wondering if it was just an HP gate. He only uses diarahan between 38000-42000 HP lost or something like that.
Just beat smt nocturne myself! Great video series man, and this helped me a lot with getting through the game myself lol, can't wait for the remaster
This channel is going to blow up once SMT V comes out. Love your videos!
Damn who would have thought it was possible. Cant wait for the next challenge keep them up Narly
SMT V comes in 2021
I cannot wait to see what challange will Nyarly do in SMT V
NYARLY!
NOCTURNE REMAKE! AHHHHH!
That is why i am back here

You madlad. Congratulations. Now looking forward to Izanagi only run of p4. Take your time on that one tho.
Dude congrats, glad you were able to finish with out buffs knew you could do it
When I say my heart jumped because my favorite video series got a part 4 update ,,,
Hey, it's been a pretty rough two days, I'm glad that I have something to look forward to, now.
I like how you play nocturne and not long later it gets announced to come to the switch, with Raidou too.
Just saw this as soon as i opened youtube NOW IM EXCITED
I'm so glad you beat this game without debuffs, this must have been so relieving for you
I don't really mind the cheating.
Congrats on the win, man! You did it! I love this game and just beat it for the first time after giving up on it as a teenager. 😁
Time to prepare for can you beat smt nocturne without buffs or debuffs HD Edition
NYARLY! SMT Nocturne HD Remaster just got announced for the Switch, Spring 2021!
