Two strokes are a lot cheaper to maintain. The skills to do Maintance, what change, piston and rings and put jets in a carburetor are always 10 times more easier than how to adjust the valves on a four stroke. A lot of people don’t live in California, where there seems to be twice as many race shops and dealers, so you have to do a lot of the work yourself. In my opinion, two strokes are cheaper to purchase easier to work on and maintain.
Not just that, but if you know how to ride a 2-stroke, you can destroy 4-strokes...even with a smaller displacement. That's why they limit maximum 2-stroke displacement in the 450 class to 250cc, and 150cc in the 250F class. A 350cc -2stroke, with the latest upgrades, frame, vibration reduction, direct injection, etc, will lay waste to 4strokes in the right hands.
I agree with almost everything with one exception. Moto is easier on a four stroke but tight single track fun stuff is much easier on a two stroke. Also two strokes are way more fun and feel lighter and more nimble than a four stroke.
I bought my first dirtbike (used) rode it for 50 ft then tore the entire thing apart for a COMPLETE rebuild. Never took a bike apart before. Would not have attempted that on a 4T. Being able to wrench on your own bike as a new rider was pretty sweet.

I agree easier to ride and easier to go faster on a 4stroke. But 2 strokes seem to just last forever and are so cheap and simple to wrench on. And honestly people talk about how hard it is to tune a 2 stroke. All the years I’ve ridden two stroke since the early 90s I’ve hardly ever had to mess with jetting. More or less cleaning the carb out from sitting is what gets you.
Owned two stokes all my life, two months ago bought my first four stroke. Mostly I ride enduro trails, still getting used to the four stoke but overall it is so much forgiving than my two stoke. Nowadays I ran the two stroke when riding alone or in small groups, and take the four stoke when ridding in larger groups.
Can't believe you went there, but agree 100% I grew up racing 2 strokes. Since I've went with 4 strokes as an old man now, the keys is the new developments. These new 4T are out of this world. Miss the ease of rebuilding a 2T, but that's about it these days.
That sounds like a personal opinion, a 150cc 2 valve air cooled 4 stroke is slow but a liquid cooled 4 valve crf150r its pretty fun you should ride one
@@5thgearpinned450 It's nothing compared to a te150i or xcw150, no comparison, the 4 stroke is underpowered and boring next to a 2t 150 fi bike. Especially one with electronic pv.
Everyone is going to have their own opinion on this, and to each their own. But, I will play devils advocate on many of these opinions.... Carbureted? If we're going to compare for the sake of buying a new bike, new 2-strokes are EFI as well. Although, many still prefer carb's due to the simplicity and reliability. Vibration? Any post-2017 counter-balanced KTM-based 2-stroke is smoother than a majority of the thumpers and fatigue riders less. Ease of riding? Corner on a 4-stroke, and then the exact same corner on the 2-stroke. The 4-stroke, even if the same weight, will always feel heavier due the abundance of parts rotating, causing the engines to act as huge gyroscopes and requiring more energy to turn and lean the bikes over. Maintenance....2-strokes win there as well...no valve shimming, no stretching came chains, no multiple oil filters. Technology...both have throttle mapping, both have EFI...sort of the bust there. Cost...2-strokes are less to purchase, and less to maintain. Ease of riding...sort of comes to tuning. If you throw a new riding on a 450 or 300....both will hurt. Both can be tuned to be "easier" the ride. I will say that you can be generally "lazier" on the thumper due to the torque. In the end, each person have their preference. I learned on 2-strokes, but changed to thumpers when the 250F's started becoming popular, then a few 450s and 350s. But, after switching to primary off-road riding, I've gone back to 2-strokes and don't think I'll be riding another thumper off road for the reasons above. These 300 zingers just can't be beat. Ride on everyone!
I recently started learning how to ride at the track and been having a few good days! I rode in the dessert for a while and chose a 2013 sx125 for the track and I love it way more than the 250f.
Everything you said is correct. However, keep in mind that 25 years of RD has gone into 4 strokes. Just take a moment and think about 25 years of RD going into 2 strokes. You would probably be looking at a CR250 making 60hp and weighing 195lbs.
As much as I wish that were the case, it’s not reality. 2 strokes don’t have that much more room for development to get anywhere close to what you think. It did take an insane amount of work to get a 250 2 stroke even close to 60hp, let alone while only being 195lbs. Not even MXGP works bikes would be capable of those numbers. 250 2 strokes are only making 41-45hp stock. Even getting a new 450 to 60hp would take 1000s of dollars. The most powerful 450 doesn’t make more than 53hp stock even though the magazines lie about their dyno results. Don’t get me wrong,I’m a 2 stroke guy, I ride a YZ250 and a CR500, but even my 500 would need an exhaust and some porting to reach 60hp. I’m talking at the wheel not the crank like dirt bike magazine does when they say the new 450s are close to 60hp

A jack of all trades? Get a 2 stroke KTM XC model.
Good comparison, a lot of clutching at straws there.😝 You’re right though, what’s not so great about two strokes makes four strokes just better from an engineering/physics perspective. If I rationally had to chose to have just one bike it would be a 350XC-F… but there’s nothing rational about riding two strokes. The zing, the ping, the smell. 😍 My 23 300SX is the best KTM yet and I’d bet the 300XC is the best all round bike ever. You either do let you don’t, the four strokes are no longer the ticking time bombs they once were… but it’s a way of life either way. Keep it stinky FTW!🤘😝
I’ve been trying to find a blown up 12-15 CRF250. I ride and race a 97 cr250 and would like a thumper to throw around in the woods with my trail riding buddies.
Nobody wants to rebuild a 10 or 15 year old forestroke anyways. I recently sold a 2012 KX450 in mint unused condition and I was surprised at the lack of interest. A classic 2 stroke fetches far more $.
Perfect ! Now all the girls are going to go out and get 4-strokes! 😋 Honestly, I choose to ride a 2-stroke (YZ250) because it does indeed take more skill, and when you do it right, its more fun. If I was going to race Moto seriously, I'd prolly race a 250F...and hate every minute of it 🤣 JK Braaap!
On average a 4 stroke cyl head alone costs 3 times more to buy & ebuild than any average 2 stroke complete motor. It's why I built a CRF150RB w a CR125 motor for my son. Lighter faster cheaper no valves to check & won't punch rods through cases
I strictly rode four strokes for most of my life and then recently got a 95 KTM 300 exc and I'm considerably faster in the woods on that bike even with an old chasis and suspension. On a moto track I suck regardless cause i haven't had much opportunity to ride moto but I'd probably be better on a four stroke but with the less engine braking, lighter weight, and lug ability of the 300 I'm night and day faster on tight trails and technical enduro stuff on a two stroke and thats mostly what i ride.
If they ever let 250 two strokes race against the 250 fours there won’t be anymore debate. Four strokes are the motocross version of “equity and inclusion” so that’s a big fat nah for me.
Here’s a point if 4 strokes are perfect like you say . I don’t see the top Hard Enduro riders like Bolt riding a 4 stroke at erzberg or Romaniacs or at any venue they race
4 strokes are the best bikes ever for beginners, novices and family ride events. Those with top physical condition who can keep the 2 stroke pinned with no lazy riding 4 stroke habits, you'll have the win every time, Just rebuilt my 2 stroke. New jug, top end lectron carb, $2,000. You could buy a new 2 stroke for the cost of replacing just the jug and valve train on 4 strokes. Absolutely ridiculous,. MG KTM also has great bikes as long as your not concerned with money, maintenance and time. KTM makes lots of money pushing the 4 stroke narrative, warehouses full of replacement parts.
We are just going to have to agree to disagree Jay. 4 T are much easier, but 2T are so much more fun. Ride a 4T on a tight single track vs. a 2T. You might come to your senses.😂
Two strokes rule! 💪. Four stroke “race bikes” are just a bad idea. Way too complicated and too heavy! Dirt bikes are not suppose to sound like lawn mowers😂!!
What he isn’t telling you is that modern 4 strokes also need top end jobs fairly often with their ridiculously high compression ratios (referring to modern Mx 250 and 450’s) and top end jobs on a 2T cost a third less AT LEAST Compared to a top end on a 4 stroke. Have fun adjusting your valves all the damn time. And I’ll keep ripping good ole reliable, powerful, best sound best smelling machines on the planet til the day I DIE! 2 stroke or NOTHING!!!!

2bangas rule mate. They sound look are lighter cheaper and have nice powerband heaps more exciting to ride and motors can be repaired and serviced easily, with half the cc of 4strokes 2strokes have almost same power. Unless you're going for championship then 4stroke has ruined motocross. 500cc 2bangas got stopped as they said two much power. Then they double the cc of 4strokes against 2. Too many private tracks and secret riding areas have been shut because of noise complaints from wetfart 4s. No one used to know where we were riding. Bring back excitement to our sport and fan's will flock back. They can't handle listening to that constant loud noise and can't hear what individual riders are doing. Avagud1 mate think about it.
4t lug up the hills, my happy place ridding. Most of my ride on the 4t in the desert I can short shift, keep the chassis calm and chug across long varied terrain faster and in more control.

All 2 strokes matter!
I’ve been trying to find a blown up 12-15 CRF250. I ride and race a 97 cr250 and would like a thumper to throw around in the woods with my trail riding buddies.
Yep. Ridden both. 4t are easier to ride. I might switch if I get a permanent injury, get massively out of shape or they're still sold when I get old.
4 strokes are better at maximizing profit for manufacturers
Nobody wants to rebuild a 10 or 15 year old forestroke anyways. I recently sold a 2012 KX450 in mint unused condition and I was surprised at the lack of interest. A classic 2 stroke fetches far more $.
This is the WHOLE answer to why 4stroke mx bikes exist. This is the 1 and only thing they are better at!
Keep your 4 Stokes,Love the two Strokes by Far ,an more fun to ride..
If they ever let 250 two strokes race against the 250 fours there won’t be anymore debate. Four strokes are the motocross version of “equity and inclusion” so that’s a big fat nah for me.
I ride and enjoy both 2 and 4 strokes. Who gives a shit what you ride, just Ride ! Why dudes worry about what another dude rides is beyond me.
I had my 23’ ktm 125 tuned, TPI tuning did it and it is awesome! Sure, I couldn’t tune it myself, but I’m very happy with it.
I love both. But modern 4 strokes are better for serious riding/racing.
Im keen to try. So how do I put 2 extra strokes on my 19 Husky 300i?
Lmao💀
It's not about being easy it's about having fun and showing your better by riding a harder to ride bike
It cost me more for 1 rebuild of 4 stroke than every rebuild of the 1990's.
Here’s a point if 4 strokes are perfect like you say . I don’t see the top Hard Enduro riders like Bolt riding a 4 stroke at erzberg or Romaniacs or at any venue they race
True, but when Jarvis was asked which was better he said 2-strokes for hard enduro, 4-strokes for everything else.
@@BFord1 Bolt said the same, he only like 2T for the gnarliest sections, prefers 4T everywhere else.
Yes I agree because I also ride a 4 stroke.
Well, if you are old, like grandpa of your grandpa, you need a 4-stroke.
TPI GASGAS for me!
We are just going to have to agree to disagree Jay. 4 T are much easier, but 2T are so much more fun. Ride a 4T on a tight single track vs. a 2T. You might come to your senses.😂
Okay. A quad is easier to ride than a bike so I'm switching.
2 stroke is much easier for enduro and hard enduro and difficult terrain, lower cost lighter more fun
4 strokes are literally no more reliable than 2 strokes are. Further more, they cost much more to repair
I own fifteen bikes, and fourteen are two smokes!! Guess what I like more!!
I don't know...schwinns
Ive just bought my 1st ever bike and its a husky fe250 so i hope they are easier to ride 😅
LIES!!!
2 smoke is for real mens. Anyone drives a 4 stroke
I switched to 4 over 2 years ago for enduro. When I ride 2 strokes now they seem small and silly and the power peaks out to early.
False.
2 stroke vs 4 stroke separates the boys from men
What fuel do you recommend for 2015 yz250f with 14.5:1 ?
Just enough octane so is doesn’t ping.

It depends which one you pick they are the same as good i dont like loud stuff or gas smell so i like 4 stroke it does not matter
You sound like those locos that are trying to push EV's on everyone!!! BRRAAAPPPP FOREVER!!!!!
Its simple really if 4 strokes are so bloody good why are they still cheating????
You’re losing subscribers every second this thumbnail stays up. You will never financially recover from this.
LOL that's a good one
Maybe when im 60 i will ride 4t
2 stroke every day all day !! Especially for woods riding!
Coming from a 200MXC to a CRF450R I sure miss the 2 stoke Machine vs the 4 stroke I'm new to the 4 stroke dirtbike I have some getting use to 😅
Side note I tried x offroad in the past I love the app
I got a Sherco 450 last year. Amazing bike but that 200 is prob way better in tight single track. My 450 is work, but rips flowy and wide open stuff.
NOPE !
I have a yamaha rxz 135 cc. Fun to ride♥️♥️
Ride a 30 year old 500cc 2 stroke.
I like em both I’m gheyyyy
2021 300 ktm xc ...coming off a 450 four .... So much more fun for me!
Rieju 300 (6 days) for an all around great time. For 6 days of pure fun.
4 months ago you guys said 2 strokes are better lmao
4t lug up the hills, my happy place ridding. Most of my ride on the 4t in the desert I can short shift, keep the chassis calm and chug across long varied terrain faster and in more control.
