I buy clapped out 2 strokes just to bring life back to them. It's a hobby over the winter months. Been around 2 strokes since 1978.
Best addiction there is.
I have also strangely acquired this same hobby, never been on a track with one yet haha
That sounds awesome man.
@JoeLiberalism currently restoring a 92 YZ250, shes almost done 💪 then im gonna restore my 86 honda cr80r to its original glory.
Maybe you or someone in this thread can help me out then
I just bought a rebuilt yz85 for my daughter and the sparkplug electrode broke off in the cylinder or inside
I tried finding it with a magnet, kicking it over to blow it out, as well trying to blow out with air compressor.
Either it came out and I didn't see it or it went inside the engine which I am really worried about since I just bought this 2 months ago and barely have rode it. It has fire but will not start up or run any longer. I have had other problems like loose bolts around the carb breather or the rubber portion the carb attaches to and the gasket failing so air was getting in which I just filled that crack with glue until I got a new gasket.
Is there anyway to tell if the electrode went inside and done damage as well what tests could I run to tell? Any experience with this? Any suggestions I would be grateful for!
2 strokes compress the fuel/oil / air mixture in the crankcase and forces it up the transfer ports into the combustion chamber where the fuel/oil/air mixture gets compressed again before it fires ...we call this effect supercharging...when the piston travels fast enough is when the powerband begins ...the expansion chamber reverses the sound wave from the exhaust fire and blocks the supercharged intake from escaping out the exhaust port ...thats when she comes "on the pipe " and horsepower goes off the charts this is why a four stroke doesn't stand a chance as 4 strokes can only suck bang and blow ..when 2 stroke go braap they are making boost
Not really, but ok... 😂
You forgot where the power valve opens and drops a ton of compression to make high end horsepower.
I giggled when he said a 2018 as an older bike 😂 I’ve never owned anything that wasn’t 10+ years old
Same 😂. I'm changing that this Christmas though.
Same here. My newest bike I've owned is what I still have which is a 2011, I've owned a 2019 pitbike but they don't count as they are dirt cheap
I currently own a 1994 💀
I cant work from a brain tunor, so every time I get a bike I have to turn around and sell it for bills& rent. Yay🙃😂
@@CodyBowman4 What's a brain tunor? A type of fish?
Reason #11
Your sons face the first time he hits the power band on his 15 year old KX 65.
Priceless!!!!
those 65's are fast
I miss my 1998 6speed kx60 haha
I can't wait for this day bro. I'm already shopping around
I still have a 2 stroke street bike. I bought new in 1985. It's almost mint. It's a Yamaha RZ500.
I'll offer you 1985 price for it as new, just let me know if you want to sell.. should have sold back then new for around 5k...
You forgot the biggest reason I love 2t over 4t. You can lug a 2t WAY lower than a 4t. I'm a single track trail rider and I can lug my bike below idle and it'll just keep chugging along. Get even close to idle with a 4t and it dies.
Two strokes are cool af so are 4 strokes , most people like both, they both have pros and cons it depends on the situation to most it usually depends on price but what matters most is people are riding and getting into the sport
I lost my ass on a rm 450 when it dropped a valve. Costed almost $2,000 because it needed a new head and piston. Going back to 2 strokes.
Can def find the stuff cheaper but I feel you
@prodjlxu that was the cheapest I could find a USED cylinder head with cams. It was 800 to 900 bucks just for the head alone on ebay. The new piston kit was almost 400 and labor was expensive.
The worst thing about 2smokes is how inflated prices have gotten because not many new ones are available. My next bike will be a new yz250 if I cat find a decent used bike for a decent price. My last bike was a yz250f and yes I liked it.
I'm from the UK, 14 years ago I bought a 2001 CR250 for £1150. I've just recently bought a 98 CR250 and it cost me £5500. Prices have boomed over here.
@@mattress7005ya and a 98 frame is cheeks compared to the 01
It’s easy to find 2 strokes for a good price bro lol
I’m no pro but I have two two strokes in my garage and I couldn’t be happier with them he’ll on wheels forever .
I remember when Honda released their first CRF250 and 450 4 strokes.
Good friend of mine, since retired, was a Honda and KTM dealer.
I went down to his shop one day and observed several blown motors sitting on the work table. And these bikes had only been.out for a couple months..!!
When I saw that the pistons looked like a hocky puck and those motors had to Rev like hell to make power then I knew those bikes were not ever going to be on my list to own one. And I also thought the engineers that designed those short stroke extremely high RPM joke stroke screamers need their heads examined.
I will stick with my carbed 300 2 stroke. Just keeps going.
Facts
Keep in mind, the story you are speaking of was 20 years ago. They are fuel injected and shouldn’t be compared to the carbed 4 strokes of the 2000s. It was only a few years after that story of yours that Honda released some of their best chassis to date and many bikes to date were inspired by the feel of it.
Modern 4 strokes are generally extremely reliable at this point, theres a reason most lawnmowers and generators use them.
@jpesicka999
I'm %100 a two stroke guy but there's no argument that four strokes put down faster and more consistent lap times on a track. As an amateur just riding in the woods for fun two stroke is the way to go because of ease of maintenance and lower cost of maintenance. I currently own a 23 Husky TE300 TPI (favorite bike i've ever owned) and yes the initial purchase price was expensive but the bike has been just as easy and cheap to maintain as a carb bike (except for the added cost of oil pump and potential sensors). Plus I think riding two strokes is just more fun!
i agree but i think if 2 strokes had all the research and development the 4 strokes have gotten in the last 25 years and slightly closer in cc.. the smoker would reign supreme.. just my opinion though
@@eddalton8530 Outside of motorcycles engine manufacturers have developed DFI and EFI 2 strokes for decades in aviation and marine propulsion. Ultimately ending with similar results of losing to more efficient 4 strokes. Despite these DFI 2 strokes having a weight advantage, less moving parts, and matching 4 strokes in emissions output. They couldn’t come close to the fuel efficiency of equally powered 4 strokes and that outweighed the other benefits. Thankfully KTM keeps developing 2 strokes and these new EFI bikes are the best 2 stroke bikes to date. But until the AMA increases the engine size allowed for 2 strokes there will always be a gap.
@@SkylarRace you can't compare apples to oranges really.... had the top manufacturers continued development of 2 strokes alongside the 4 strokes with equal or close to equal engine cc and chassis development.. there is no doubt the smoker would have the advantage. i do agree with you on the ama ruling for sure
@@eddalton8530 There’s no denying that a 400+cc EFI smoker would destroy the 4 strokes. Unfortunately 20 years ago the ama determined 4 strokes require double the engine size to compete. Which might have been somewhat accurate back then but not even close now. They need to get an independent agency to figure out what size 2 stroke would be fair competition and change the rules.
@@SkylarRace agreed
First time I rode a "big" 4Stroke was a Suzuki GS500, nice and fast but... The power delivery was so smooth that I immediately thought a 2Stroke was more fun.
Bro yes! Immediately the sound, and the smell of burning bean oil is so intoxicating!! Add instant power and all hail the mighty 2 stroke! Yeah
I like 4 strokes cuz you can always count on them pushing rods through cases so there cheap & great for 2T swaps
Dude you realise 2 strokes are way cheaper than 4 strokes and have less moving parts which means they are easier to maintain and cheaper to repair.
@@Astrogamezz Dude....Learn how to read & comprehend before you reply
You had me at the smell of 2-stroke exhaust…🥰
2 stroke on 2 wheels 4 stroke on 4 wheels. I only trail ride and I still own and ride a 1997 KDX 220R and a 2010 Honda 450R quad. The KDX is old but it still loves trails.
Four strokes have ruined racing. They maybe easier to ride and have better traction but that is it. They are more expensive. In the pro ranks easier to ride is worse for the spectators. There are less mistakes which makes for boring races. Also faster means more injuries for the riders. The AMA made the biggest mistake ever when they let 450cc four strokes race against 250cc two strokes. It should be stroke for stroke, but if they did that four strokes would not have taken off.
@martin barr's CRF450 So how have 4 strokes made racing better for spectators?
Bro said they are easier to ride and get better traction..that sounds objectively better. I have a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke it was just funny to read that honestly didn't read anything after cuz I started laughing.
You have a point and I like 2 strokes but 4 strokes are still fun to ride
@martin barr's CRF450 let's just cut to the chase.. 4 strokes are boring!!!! Boring to ride and boring to watch
@@sparkykendall4653 They are fun to ride. I do not mean to hate on four strokes as much as it seems. I have a 1970 CT70. It is a four stroke. I just do not think they have been good for motocross.
you had me at the sound in the intro.. 2 stroke will always be the best and will always win in my eyes. 2 strokes to me are the true riders bike. you can build them yourself at home with ease, tune them for cheaper and customise them so much better!
and there is no better sound and experience then a 2 stroke on full throttle round a track.
until you cant get away from 12 on your ass and you crash and die.
if your a person that goes on rideouts.
I absolutely love a 4 stroke in terms of dual sport and commuting while being slow to go off road. But only when talking about a WR250R. My valve check is at 27,000 miles. My bike is a 2008 and they still don’t need to be checked.
A 4 stroke dirt bike is stupid expensive to maintain. A 2 stroke is super simple and relatively cheap to maintain without many special tools or need for a shop.
I'm a two stroke guy through and through, but 4t's are just objectively better as duel sports. My YZ125 feels like ass on pavement, but my old KLX 300 was a way smooth ride on pavement. Two's are strictly off road machines.
Thanks again Jay great video and 💯 True I'm 61 picked up a yz125x 2020 before that I had a 2019 TX 300 great bike as well I gave up on 4 strokes because of all the stuff that you talked about 👍
Glad you came to your senses
Jay, you should try a head from Kelsey at RK TEK, the increase in low end is amazing and makes the bike easier to ride especially on trails, it allows you to ride everything a gear higher, lower rpm means better traction, more control, if you need more power just roll on the gas, best 2 stroke engine mod you can do for the money, most head mods for trail riding don't do much if anything but this one you can actually feel the improvement.
My buddy threw one on his gasgas and oh boy he don't even use back brake going down steep stuff anymore. That engine brake is godly
Horses for courses.. grew up on a 2stk and just got sick of the ring ding.. now i rocket a 510 husky at 65kg and some skill its lethal..
Klotz has that sweet smell. I remember lining up for practice the morning of a race and being right in the middle of the pack waiting for the flager to lift the rope up and let us out for practice. I was basically inhaling 85cc two stroke exhaust fumes for several minutes lol guess that explains how I ended up the way I am 😂😂😂
Yes catastrophic things do happen lol my buddy’s yz250 shattered its piston today and just munched the whole motor it’s not looking like he’ll be able to salvage much of it but at least the parts aren’t too expensive and he can rebuild it himself
Yep it happens if the stock cast pistons are left in too long, you cannot break a good wiseco forged Piston with a hammer!
2 stroke = Eddie Van Halen. 4 stroke = Stevie Ray Vaughn. Both are amazing, but I wanna ROCK!
Love the content just contacted dirt n iron love that guy aswell man wish I could meet you guys grew up watching you guys since I was little little now I’m 22 learned so much through all you guys went ahead and build my garage like dirt n iron love you guys keep up the great content !!!!
I’ve had 6 4strokes in my life. I’m trading in my 2020 KX 450 for a 23 husky TC 250 this coming weekend. I love both honestly but 450s are just to much for my 44 year old butt. I can’t wait to rip a modern 2 stroke
2 strokes rule! Now if someone would make a new model 500cc with a counter-balancer!
BRC make a counterbalanced 500
@@jonnoMoto True they make an engine I've seen "999lazer" build one. Now if someone can mass produce a complete bike at competitive price.
Like your videos I'm a old guy and love my old 200 the ultimate woods bike would like to do some upgrades some day 2 strokes for life 💪
Well older models are accessible to most without the counter. Which older two strokes with the vibration and inconsistent power curve they are physically demanding but makes great bike skill.
I’ll be wanting to get the Husqvarna TX300 2023.
You mentioned it, but wasn't in your numbered reasons... FUN!!! I totally agree with all of your other reasons, hell, I even bought a 2-stroke lawn mower to use up all my stale fuel. I just loved pushing that thing around, making my yard smell of motul 800.
I love the Rieju 300. KYB suspension, kick start, carburetor, bulletproof motor and premix. What was good it the past is still good. Oh yeah fun to ride.
I started with a 84 Cr125r had to set the timing and rebuild the carb was a fun bike then friends got in my head that i needed something newer so i got a 06 yz250F was absolutely horrible so instead got rid of it and got a 99 RM250 and there my love 2 strokes began i now have a 98 YZ250 that i have made a killer bike and am quite happy with its like a tractor on the trails
I have a DS 80 that’s 30 years old and that thing runs great and has been beaten the crap out of it
Good review. I don’t know why, but in my search for my first bike, I was leaning towards an 350 xcf…. Had ridden a lot of track with street bikes, but this will be my first dirtbike. No plans to motocross or any racing. I’d like to go on long rides through the desert or woods and explore. I’m starting to lean now towards the 23 300xc, Or xc-w. Your thoughts on a 23 KTM as a first bike to build skills on.
I’m 41 and 6’2 210.
Fun is ideal, but smooth power, and good suspension, I think riding a crazy bronco would be fun for 10 minutes, but I wouldn’t seek it out daily.

I personally think they should get rid of the 450 class so hard to use all that power have a 350 class that 250 2strokes can compete in seams fair to me
I wouldn't consider a 2018 an older bike on borrowed time... I have a 06 rmz450 that I would consider is old and on borrowed time. However i have a 98 xr400 that is an absolute beast and a 89 xr250r and both of them will outlast the oil on this planet. 2 stroke that!
XR is a different animal. A 2018 being beat on is asking a-lot for a pure race bike. A 450xcf that probably didn't see the rev limiter however, 100 hours is nothing.
Love my 23 Beta 200 rr race edition
2 SMOKE all the way bro BRAPP BRAPP !!
As somebody at 27 just now starting to ride 2 strokes are way easier to dip into .
Thanks for sharing this vid with us buddy :) your advice is spot on :D 4 strokes take your energy off you allot quicker than 2 strokes , especially if you have to kick them over !!! Learned allot then , thanks 🙏
If you know how to kick a bike then you can kick any bike in one kick. All it’s about is piston positioning.
Thing is if you bored out a 2 stoke to get closer to the CC's of a four stroke 450 then you cannot compare the two. I'm a two stroke guy, just a little more fun with how the powe band kicks harder, etc.
I just recently switched from a 2020 YZ250 to a 2019 KX450 and the YZ was definitely better in the trail but I love the four-stroke on the track
2 stroke is best. Look at sleds. 850 2 stroke w a turbo. Making 195 HP. Try building a 4 stroke sled w that power and still light and still flickable.
Someone should just start there own 2 stroke series. Screw the manufacturers if they don't show up. Make it fun again. Keeps the rules loose. Idk. Maybe just a fantasy. Lol. J your the man. Appreciate your vids. The best ones in my opinion.
that bike looks amazing maybe someday I'll spruce mine up, maybe when I'm out of college
Great vid Jay. I'm thinking of switching from my 250f to a 250 2T. 38yr old vet rider strictly ride motocross tracks for fun never race. I'm between a yz 250 or a new 2023 husky tc 250. Love to hear ur thoughts on which would be better?

The whole cheaper thing does it for me.. this hobby/ sport is already so expensive, everyone needs a cheaper option to cater for a variety of people, its no good pricing riders on a budget out of the sport
yeah, the best is the 2t smell...addictive.
10 reasons 4strokes are objectively better than 2 stroke
1) maintenance costs is much higher on 2stroke than 4stroke, pistons are much easier to get blows same for the cylinder,
2) the fuel consumption is outrageous on the 2stroke,
3) you need to put good oil that is pricy and mix oil that is outrageously expensive...
4) you need to change often your sparkplug vs 4stroke,
5) and much more often the piston rings vs 4stroke.
6) At the end of the day, compared 200 hours on a 4s versus 2 stroke you spends 2 to 3k more on the 2stroke due to fuel and mixoil.
7) A modern 4stroke never fails, much more fuel efficient, there is no valve issues or clearance on modern 4stroke.
8) Btw 4stroke KTM are lighter than the 2stroke, so nope...again a win for the 4stroke
9) anybody with connected brain can repair a 4stroke, ain't harder than a 2stroke, also false
10) a 4stroke is much easier to handle in muddy terrain that 2stroke, 250 2troke or 4stroke are rev bikes, can't be compared with 300 2stroke, a 300 4stroke is already something very similar, the argument that 300 2stroke is faster than a 300 4stroke is a no go. Both are fast, only low skill riders would say such no go argument...
2stroke are good, but it is just a hype because KTM wants to push them, since the japs do not have serious competition, but that argument 2s vs 4stroke is a no go. If people like them it is fine. But 2strokes are now as expensive as 4 stroke...
cheers
I ve had two suzuki gt 750, s in the past, what a lovely bike. The, ve gone though the roof. I, de have one in a flash if I could afford it. Riding a triumph adventurer 900 at the moment I can only dream of times gone bye
Great video. Everyone knows 2-strokes reign supreme but I love both and would probably ride 4-strokes most days.
Merry Christmas Jay, from the Dickinson's.
man your bikes always look sharp
2 stroke for life. 4 strokes are always breaking or need further tweaking/wrenching. My 2 stroke needs just a little top end work every 100 hours, big deal.
I never find the pros and cons for either to be that compelling. The only con I have with 4t is the sound. I find them obnoxiously loud.
We have many a 2 strokes at the track that are way loud and ratty. I keep my silence freshly pack. Hate loud crappy sounding exhausts
Your exactly right! I've always thought that!
Two strokes are faster, lighter, and just all around better. Also they attract chicks so if you want to attract dudes ride a four stroke.
🤣Exactly....Just like Ronnie Mac #69 says. 2 strokes=chicks, 4 strokes=. . . . .
2-Strokes by birth...2-Strokes by death! Sworn for fun... Loyal to none✊😎👍
Some very good points
Thats a nice looking bike, I like it!
Can we just all agree the cr 500 ping king is the best bike of all time
"That sound. Who doesn't love that sound?"
My neighbors 😢
2 stroke seems to do the opposite to me, 2 stroke wears me out faster. Could be the suspension, not sure.
Much easier riding a 4T
I think he was really describing a 4t with a poor off-idle mapping. Some can be really lurchy off idle
It is the speed at which terrain is coming at you. 4 stroke heavier but smoother. 2 stroke racer never breaks sweat on 4 stroke cause it is not moving as fast or as ferociously. 4 stroke is cruiser
2T wears me out even when compared to a heavier 4T....ram's. 4T power on single track is what I like, but I do not like the stall factor on a 4T at low rpm's.
My 00 XR440 and my 87 XR250 found this video heeeelarious, aircooled thumpers last forever and are indestructible. I have literally done nothing but upgrade the bikes zero issues even on the 87 lol
I traded a 05 crf250r for a 04 rm 125 , love this bike too

Lol. I am literally fixing up a 2004 crf450r. And I love that bike. Starts on first kick everytime. I can also ride slow around my property with my son.
@martin barr's CRF450 You need to learn how to jet. My YZ490 will run cleanly at 11rpm all day.
@martin barr's CRF450 The point is that 2-stroke can do it all- lug down low with great grunt, or rev its guts out. It doesnt matter, the 2-stroke will handle it, and beg for more without complaint.
You must be talking about 2 strokes from 90s? Todays 2 strokes you can lug them down low and not stall.
@martin barr's CRF450 My YZ490 would get smoked by KX500s and CR500s when it was new.
But a 450 isn't touching either of those either.
@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 I know nothing about your bike so I googled it. This is their selected answer lol.
The Yamaha YZ490 was introduced in 1982 (following in the footsteps of the YZ465). Sadly, the 490 was heavier than the 465, nowhere near as reliable, difficult to start, had grim suspension, vibrated and was impossible to jet.
Will running the gas tank empty cause a two-stroke to have a lean runaway condition

Ive put 10 seasons on a piston.
500s last forever.
Shit I put 100+ hours on my kX450 entire engine. No problems.
I prefer the 4 stroke the simply last longer
Ive seen older two strokes still alive tho more often than old 4's
I love both im actually having such a hard time choosing for a new bike
Lighter faster easier to maintain less parts faster revving ,and does not sound like shrek farting
Also that they’re just wicked to ride in a way four strokes will never be… two stankin for life! FTW!😝😝😆
Love the two strokes ... Hate the price
Good video that makes a lot of good points. What I take away is that 2 strokes are for lesser men.
Too bad Kawasaki doesn’t make a newer KX 250 2stroke 😢 ! My dinosaur is a 98 KX 250
I got a 92 kx250 💀
Agree and KX 500.
Got a '99 KX250, still a great bike though.
Vibrates the fillings out of your teeth, but that adds to overall feel, it's visceral.
And for a 25 year old bike, it still goes like a stabbed rat, and I sure as hell ain't skilled enough to use it to its fullest potential.
I really like those neon green plastics!
Thanks Jay🤙
Two strokes is a better technology.
Full stop.
In competitive racing yes..
With the fuel prices I'll stick with my 4
Hahahahha what does fuel price have to do with a dirt bike haha it’s all cheap regardless of what bike you have
You forgot something. If kick starting a bike a 2 stroke is easier to kick over
You cut down on labour costs dropping your motor on a work bench, rather than pushing your bike in.
When your two seconds from a ramp and you realize you don't have enough speed your gonna wish you had a 4 stroke unless your rpms are up
What bike is this in the video?
2-strokes make 40% or more torque than does 4-strokes of similar displacement. Especially more low end torque and power!
When you hit the powerband on a 2-stroke you know why.
Yes 2stroke are better but what you have to say about the petrol???You need 2 petrol tanks with 2stroke than 1 tank for 4stroke.
Let's have an additional Supercross class. 2-Stroke!
They would not do that because it might be more popular!
First time ever racing would add a class to a series so slower bikes could ride..🤣🤣
