I just got my CB1000R and have been riding in rain mode for now because it has been raining , great is the word that describes the pick up around town where I have been mainly using it and in part on main roads. Pick up is very satisfying being able to leave traffic without any fuss or drama. It is very well balanced at low speeds providing confidence in U-turns and filtering. The steering is direct giving very good feedback which inspires you to change direction with ease. The exhaust note is a low satisfying hum accompanied with burbles and pops when you release the throttle and change gear, A great bike that looks, sounds and runs, and will keep you thinking you are lucky to be able to ride it.
I'd have one. Plenty enough power for the roads and only a nod towards retro, rather than the full blown trying to crack on it's an old bike with modern engineering. Good job Honda 👏
I studied this bike for a year and just had to have one. Found a leftover 2018 in black - which is what I wanted anyway. Still too much silver on it for my taste, so I blacked it all out - a real head turner. No, it's not the baddest bike on the block, but it's certainly the best looking. Besides, in normal use, who needs more than 145 HP? I traded in a VFR1200F for this bike and I'm happy as hell with it. It'll keep up with the VFR up to 80 MPH, and believe me, 467 pounds is a lot more fun than 600 pounds. Smoothest engine in the world, and, yes, the muffler sounds just fine. Plenty of torque in any gear - even in 6th at 25 MPH it's got smooth strong acceleration. I've never ever been burned by a Honda, from my Super-90's in the '60's, my first true love CB750 in 1970, a CL450, V45 750, V65 Sabre, V65 Magna, VFR1200F, and now this beauty. I love this bike. Call it Naked, call it NeoSports Café, call it whatever you want - it's a great bike.
I picked up mine as an ex demo. Loved the looks. Feels much more robust than an XSR900 etc, shit tonne of power and torque. It's a real split personality beast. 6th gear 35+ for cruising, or lose your license in second. Very comfy and compliant too, while being composed and engaging. Nice balanced review :)
I have this bike now for more than a year, this is a brilliant machine, quite short and nippy, very jumpy and angry on the throttle. Very exciting and easy to ride, feels like a bicycle. Very good looking and versatile (can be a daily rider, long distance and for a track day). Softer springs, so if you want to use it on the track you could benefit from a stiffer springs or a different cartridges in the forks but than you should get a track focused bike if softer springs are a problem. You will not make a mistake if you buy this, trust me, just do it!
As a current XSR900 owner, I definitely covet this bike - the fit and finish is far higher on this bike than my Yamaha. The look of the bike - imposing, road presence, beautiful and probably would not need to mod that much. Whilst I am pretty happy with my own bike, I do wonder what it would be like to have the CB1000R. Fantastic review as usual.
If you want some sour grapes to munch on, This cb1000r is reported to have snatchy on/off initial throttle. Some guys roll on and off the gas quick and apparently never notice. I like to roll on real gentle and smooth and this characteristic drives mea little crazy. Enough to not buy a bike over.
Yup. I wasn't even close to looking for a bike like this, when I was out to get a new bike. I was looking for a cruiser. Then I saw the 650 in a showroom, sat on it, looked at it again and was directly in love with it. Then I found a used CB1000R and because I'm not the smallest of guys, I just felt a little less cramped on it. The 1k, being a 2020, was only 1k Euro more expensive than the new 650. It was a little out of the budget at the time, but I'm so glad I got it. It's a few steps up from the 650 and I'm so happy with it.
What a brilliant review. You outlined a detailed description of the bike and also discussed what might suit the assessment of the individual rider. Well done, and nice wheelies - RESPECT!
I went from an 05 919 to a 14 CB1R. Now I'm saving up for this model. She looks worlds better than the 14 model. I ride in all types of weather, so glad it to see that rear fender. The previous model kicks dirt up all over the place without one.
I had mine for 6 months and the only gripe i had with it were the handlebars and the exhaust, saved a few kilos with akrapovic short exhaust and it reveals the single sided alloy wheel which is hidden by the stock exhaust a lot more, and the Rizoma bars just give it that much more confidence in the corners and you don't feel like you are overstretched all the time, the stock riding position is fantastic if you are 6ft or above but im 511 and need more backsweep.
The engine is based on the 06-07 Fireblde engine, not 08. You can tell since it had an oil level sight glass and not a dipstick. Also this engine is 998cc (75mm x 56.5mm) just like the previous CB1000R and 06-07 Fireblade. The 08+ engine is 999cc (76mm x 55.1mm). Seems the only hardware differences to the old 998cc engine is binning the hydraulic clutch for a cable actuated and adding a slipper clutch.

More a Triumph Thruxton R or RnineT competition than a hyper naked warrior. In the same vein as those two bikes styling as well. It offers more comfort and less taxing ride than a Thruxton or RnineT. It's an easy bike to ride the country hilly back roads near me. The initial softness of the suspension lets it down at full boogie, yet absorbs the derelict road conditions found around me better than most. Looks are subjective but I find it to be a good looking bike. Much like a Ducati xDiavel S treatment in a standard bike.
Got the previous model and it´s great. Tried the new one and it´s not as you claim "very different from the previous model", in fact it´s practically the same bike with 20 more hp and electronic gadgets. Style has gone from street-fighter to roadster. Same great ride, just not sure if the cost of change is worth it.
I have the old as well, so do you genuinely believe the new one is really the price cause I own my one and wanted to trade it in a lease the remaining cost. I have 08 cb1000r
Excellent review - thanks. Just read one where the tester knew the suspension wasn't adjusted, stated he didn't want to take the time for basic pre-load and then criticized the handling. oof.
I test ride it last summer. The engine does its job. Can't say I think inline 4 are that fun, but it was okay. The best part was it felt lighter than it actually is.
This bike is definitely built for my exact tastes in style and power. I like a more classic upright style but with modern features (HID lights and electronics), and although I like the style, I do not want to ride something such as a Triumph due to it having only 98 hp, after having a 185-ish hp GSXR1000. The only problem for me is that insurance quotes for this bike (in America) are astronomical, just as if I bought a liter superbike. If only they would have left the R off of the name to fool the insurance companies (lol), just as how Suzuki does with, say, the GSX-S1000 which is literally 1/3rd of the insurance quote rate due to it not being classified as a R type sportsbike as I've run into with the CB1000R. If I could get a CB1000R with GSX-S1000-ish insurance rates, I'd buy one for sure. Unfortunately, the insurance is the only thing that keeps me from buying this absolutely beautiful motorcycle when I could buy something like a XSR or GSX-S for less than half of the cost to insure.
7:27 still sounds like a description of the old CB1000R. No matter, if i was in the market for a liter bike, this would be it. And 10:16 now you know why the previous model was on the market since 2008
It sure is a fantastic looking bike! To be honest I am seriously considering trading my Monster 1100 for one of these. Hopefully my local dealer will let me demo one. Its great to see Honda rolling something out that isn't 5 years behind the times.
Nice review mate. I owned the previous version. Alot of CB1000R owners were disappointed with the updated model came out, particularly with the styling.
@@johnhogan8177 I think the general consensus was that Honda were just trying to jump on the retro style bandwagon and the whole package was a bit of a disappointment (relatively speaking). I was actually waiting for it to come out so I could upgrade but ended up buying something else once I seen it. All that being said it certainly seems objectively a good bike.
I test rode one a few days ago. I ride a BMW S1000RR and wanted something more upright as a companion. My hour long test ride wasn't great. The power and torque was good, plenty for the road. The annoying horn and indicator reared it's head but what I couldn't accept was my groin being buzzed constantly. This bike vibrates through the tank and I couldn't find any point to make it disappear, from 30 to 85 and through the revs, buzzing constantly. I cut the ride short and gave the bike back. I like to go for a few runs for a few 100miles, but not on this. The bike had around 1500 miles on it, the salesman said it's a natural feature of inline 4's? Have a ride on one, you may have a better experience.
Damn, LOVE this bike from the moment it was revealed but I'm so broken up between this one the new CBR650R and the Firebalde. I know they're all different and in different categories but can't help loving them as Honda has really upped their game. Currently ride a Kawasaki and the only reason I'd get the new Ninja ZX6R is because of the price but I am not at all a fan of the new front end. I like that you get a lot for your money but I'm also tired of Kawasaki's boring paint schemes. I mean even on this CB1000R the black one screms at me and I've never been a black bike kind of guy. Then there's the CBR650R, LOVE the styling but I don't like it's a bare bones basic bike unlike this one or a Fireblade. Then there's the Fireblade, Love the new looks and styling but the price is up there. I'm in no hurry to upgrade but it's a difficult decision.
IMHO scoop up a new old stock 2018 ZX6R while you still can if you are wanting a bike with zero miles. Might get a good deal and yeah, the 2019 is a step backwards in looks. Price would be closer to the cbr650r without the unpleasant vibrations that the honda is reported to have.
I personally want the CB650R, I loved the look of the 1000, but 1000cc's are too much for me, my 650's have plenty enough power on the streets, and the Honda has even more power at 95, that's 20+ more hp than my bikes! But it's the looks that are incredible! And like you I prefer a more flashy colored bike rather than stealth, but the black on that neo-retro design just looks so sleek!
This guy is an incredible host with a wealth of knowledge, great review you guys. The only thing I can suggest is to match the music of riding footage in volume/tone/style to the review being spoken. This host has a very calm demeanor, and a lower volume or even less volume-to-bike engine riding noise would be helpful. Other things that I think would be incredible is slow-motion footage. I take this from Chris Harris and Neil's car reviews, they utilize a soft demeanor in tone (like this reviewer!!) with slow-motion footage and subdued music to create little works of art. You've got the host, you've got the camera work, it just needs some nice editing. Good luck, great work!
M N hi, thanks for the feedback, check our other review. We create more content like what you’re talking about, we wanted this one to have a bit more pace and energy. Thanks again.
I'm torn between the CB650r and this bike. And for the most part of this struggle, I was leaning towards the 650 mainly because of the budger. But now, the more I look at videos of cb1000r, the more I feel I would not regret buying this than the 650 even if it's more expensive.
Seems like a genuine review. I thought this bike was would be crap but after watching this it seems the CB is a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Quicker than the blade to 80? Surprised me. On the road this will be a proper weapon
I really wanted to love this bike. At 6'2" it just doesn't work for me. The cut outs in the tank for your knees aren't even close to being long enough so you ride splayed out. It's hard to grip the tank. Went with the z900rs cafe. Loving it and not looking back.
The only thing I'd like to see more from this bike is either more torque or less weight.. A nice 10-15 ft lb torque increase or lose 30-40 pounds, better yet do both and you have a massively fun bike with unparalleled style and a unique market.
I think this bike will sell based on reliability, the rest of the field might not be worse in that aspect but everyone know about Honda-reliability. So if someone wants a super naked and have heard Ducati, KTM and Aprilia have less than a perfect record they might gravitate towards the Honda. Just a guess.
Great review as always, John. Right up there with the best motorcycle reviewers in my opinion. Curious to know your top 3 supernakeds? And how you rate the Honda against the 2018 Speed Triple? My daily bike is a 2015 Speed Triple, and I love it, but I test rode the 2018 Speed Triple RS and it was impressive; significantly better than my 2015. But it is a little pricey now... Also, interested to know which tyres you rate (sport/sport touring), as you didn’t seem overly keen on the S21s. I know it’s personal preference and all that, but I was quite impressed with the S21s on a few different bikes that I’ve ridden. Thanks, and keep up the stellar content. Matt
To me, more isn't always better, that's why I want the 650 version of this bike. But, that's the same reason I see this bike as better than the competition, they have too much power, add to it the better looks on this bike and the famous Honda quality, and how easy Honda's are to ride, and you have a winner in my book.
Nice overview and I saw what you did at 9:30 😉👍🏼 It does look like it! I think the black looks better... Burgundy for a color on that bike is a travesty! Yellow would have been really nice, IMHO.
I love this bike, I went with a z900rs because the lower sticker price and lower insurance rate fit my budget. I love the Z but I can’t help think about what could have been...
compared to the competition the engine and design of this is far superior maintenance wise, aside from the fact it will probably never even need it. Even my carbed CBR600 F4 from 99 valves were in spec after 60k miles.
5 star 💫 review!!! Great 👍🏽 content really. You know what you talking about! You may be able to assist. Would this suit a rider with few years riding 400-500cc’s - as a first 1000cc? I mean matured return rider ‘nothing to prove’ but has fun!
I’ve owned a 2022 CB1000R for exactly a year and rode an MT09SP just 3weeks ago.. They’re quite different bikes and I’d urge you to test ride one to appreciate those differences. My thoughts are that the Honda is easier to ride as the fuelling is better than the MT09, particularly around town. However, it’s not as manoeuvrable as the MT09, nor is the suspension quite as good. The Honda’s engine is slightly more refined being a four, and is a fair bit quieter when you’re pushing on. Again, it’s horses for courses as the MT09’s engine is like a growling bear; a bit more involving. More character. I’m not about to change ….. but it’s a close run thing. One final plus point to the Honda is a slightly sportier riding position. Hope that’s of interest.
Honda played it safe (again) but should have taken a chance & built a MT-10 .. Which might be a polarising choice but Yamaha sold a lot to the people that did like the looks & every road test raved about the way it rode.
Happy new year, John. And thank you for yet another great and verbal diarrhea free review. I just got off a slagging match with the blokes of the German motorcycle press about their, in my humble opinion, almost slavish praise for BMW over everything else. You don't do that and it's like a breath of fresh air.
disekjoumoer Happy New Year to you too. I get a few comments on here along the same lines when it comes to Triumph. We review lots of Triumphs because they invite us on their launches, not all of the manufacturers do. Patriotism doesn’t come into it for me, I just like bikes and don’t really care where they’re made. We’ve got plenty of features planned for 2019 (rather than just straight reviews of new models), hopefully we’ll be able to have some fun with a few different manufacturers in our efforts to keep our growing audience happy. Thanks for the kind words.
@@johnhogan8177 I suppose it's unavoidable to a certain extent, especially if you really do like the bikes. The problems with the BMWs concern the never ending series of golden reviews relating to the new middle class GS models, especially the 750, and their insane prices and lack of obviously worthy real world features such as actual windscreens and adjustable forks compared to other bikes in that category. Some things about those reviews just don't add up.
That's not even worth saying, hasn't been for almost 30 years now. ALL stock exhausts look and sound like shit. Slip on is mandatory for a satisfying sound from the bike plus the asthetic, so it looks streamlined and sharp.
The only reason I haven't bought one yet is because it doesn't have Cruise Control and the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on the MT10 is because I'm waiting for Honda to add Cruise Control to this bike...
I owned one for a short time. I go through a lot of bikes. I've got an MT-09 now which I plan to fix the suspension right. I really liked the engine on the Z900 for it's extremely smooth nature and solid mid-range torque.
+Lifted_Above ...I'm down to two bikes. I'm glad of it. It's a pain maintaining multiple bikes and then there's the insurance and registrations. The mt-09 is a fine bike but a little too hooligan for me. Though I almost bought the mt-07 as a second bike before I bought the z900.
I've got one... The top shock mount on the frame rusts like a cheap Chinese 125..a known fault . It's ok but nothing special. I have the new katana too and I would say that is more fun to ride and the faster you ride it ,the better it is ,never getting out of shape .
Feel like it's a bit inaccurate to put this in the same category as a MT10, Tuono or GSXS1000 which are all based on those companies sports bikes and are basically modified superbikes. Maybe the supernaked category needs to be split?
It's honestly closer to the Z900 in power and class, but cost over 4 grand more due to "Honda" and suspension. Suzuki have a simpler bike with the GSX-S1000 but it's got heaps more power and still costs much less. Tuono, 1290 SDR, MT-10, S1000R, Monster 1200 all have superbike power and technology, costing a few grand more than the Honda. CB1000R is a strange price point. It's that buyer who wants something of higher fit and finish than Kawasaki and Suzuki, doesn't care about big horsepower, and isn't interested in the European offerings.
Agreed. I'd say the ranking goes tier 1 Tuono, SD, mt10, s1000r, monster1200, gsxs1000 in whatever order (obviously there's some debate there) then tier 2 is the cb1000r, z1000/900, mt09, duke790, street triple in whatever order. The order is murky but I think the tiers are pretty well defined.
If your "tier" examples aren't going by displacement, I'd put the Street Triple 765RS in the 1st category just in terms of outright technology, refinement, and power for class.
@@exothermal.sprocket I think the biggest decider is the power output. The first group of bikes puts out something like 177-150, the second group puts out something like 125-100? I know the gsxs and the cb1000r both claim about 145 but only the gsxs actually delivers.

But a triple with a pipe is hard to walk away from. I have an MT-09 myself.
Yamaha really performs above the class due to being so light weight and that triple cranking out solid torque everywhere.

Salesmen say the dumbest things. It's rather remarkable.
Wrong it's the 06-07 cbr1000 motor.
I really wanted to love this bike. At 6'2" it just doesn't work for me. The cut outs in the tank for your knees aren't even close to being long enough so you ride splayed out. It's hard to grip the tank. Went with the z900rs cafe. Loving it and not looking back.
another beautiful bike from Honda, thank you for your review
Great review... you answered all those questions that i had. I love the way this bike looks
The only thing I'd like to see more from this bike is either more torque or less weight.. A nice 10-15 ft lb torque increase or lose 30-40 pounds, better yet do both and you have a massively fun bike with unparalleled style and a unique market.
So where does the CB fit in comparison to the other bikes mentioned early on?
I think this bike will sell based on reliability, the rest of the field might not be worse in that aspect but everyone know about Honda-reliability. So if someone wants a super naked and have heard Ducati, KTM and Aprilia have less than a perfect record they might gravitate towards the Honda. Just a guess.
Sold!
Great video review guys!
Nice video! Very professional. thanks for sharing.
Nice review👍
Also gotta admit that this bike is beautiful🙂
Fantastic Review, this journalist is my kind of rider.
The performance numbers are almost similar to the z1000. Which of the two has the edge in your opinion?
What a great review of the bike. Thanks
you didn´t metion the z 1000, it is definitely the first real massproduced naked bike
Great review, definitely my next bike 👍
8:30 why are you trying to use the turn signals mid wheelie?
What a ride review. .. superbly presented.
Matt
Matthew Wilkinson shoot me an email at John@superbike.co.uk mate, happy to answer.
What a beautiful review nicely done...
What about tall rider? 191cm Is it fits?
I love this bike, I went with a z900rs because the lower sticker price and lower insurance rate fit my budget. I love the Z but I can’t help think about what could have been...
i would buy it. but i dont have money
Well quit spending your money on the dopest dope and you'll have some.
Great review, thanks, but who was the guy stood behind you in the showroom? 😀
I am a big fan of these modern RETRO bikes! i hope its a trend that sells well and continues ;)
Meeeee tooo!
Love these long reviews :)
Great review fellas
DUKE BLADE cheers!
would you pick this bike over the MT-10?
I will buy this tomorrow
compared to the competition the engine and design of this is far superior maintenance wise, aside from the fact it will probably never even need it. Even my carbed CBR600 F4 from 99 valves were in spec after 60k miles.
That track looked mega, bike isn't shabby either! 😎🤙🏼
Needs a bigger, flat pillion seat with lower footrests
Dr. John Campbell Why bigger? It’s a normal pillion seat without the plastic
5 star 💫 review!!! Great 👍🏽 content really. You know what you talking about! You may be able to assist. Would this suit a rider with few years riding 400-500cc’s - as a first 1000cc? I mean matured return rider ‘nothing to prove’ but has fun!
I don’t see why not
I really like the gray one, sadly honda isn't releasing that color in the US.
I just wish it had a more characterful engine than an IL4. Other than that it's perfect.
Bike World great review!! If the S21 doesn´t fit much well in this bike to you what will you suggest??
Does it use the motor from the 2008 Fireblade?
Great review! My next bike. ‘09 cbr1000rr fireblade for sale
I'm torn between this and the MT 10. Love the Honda looks but the Yamaha is such a hooligan and fun to ride
Dave Davidson what didn’t you like about the MT10?
Nice bike and I actually considered it...but I ultimately chose to go with the Tuono.
i want this kinda, my current bike is 2021 yamaha mt09, should i?
Great review! By the way, which other tires could you recommend?
I've ordered silver one.
Torque was gained by using the long stroke bore.
Great bike and great review. Recently had the pleasure of reviewing one of these and its absolutely awesome. Preferred to the mt10
Mt10 uses more petrol then a lambergeni
Is it great for tall riders?
Which is the soundtrack used during the track portion??!!
Reminds me of my 1985 v65 Sabre...time to buy my new mid-life crisis
🤣
Well done guys!
Enjoy the bike life 🤙
I think this represents my preference in motorcycles.
im not a fan of that exhaust. With a after market slip-on, it will look even better
That's not even worth saying, hasn't been for almost 30 years now. ALL stock exhausts look and sound like shit.
Slip on is mandatory for a satisfying sound from the bike plus the asthetic, so it looks streamlined and sharp.
Love this Bike.
The only reason I haven't bought one yet is because it doesn't have Cruise Control and the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on the MT10 is because I'm waiting for Honda to add Cruise Control to this bike...
Does anyone know what song they're using at 5:40??
daniel hamer best to ask us Daniel.
@@BikeWorldTVshow hello bike world, What song did you use at the 5:40? :)
@@danielhamer7234 Here you go Daniel: audiojungle.net/item/epic-sport-rock-trailer/22658927?s_rank=1
Don't see much of that single sided swing arm with that factory exhaust though
What's the seat height on this bike?
Great video !! Design of the Taj Comics more like a more like a European design at the Lubbock this is a beautiful bike
The Kawasaki Z900RS beats it on hp and torque up till 8000 something rpms which is right were you are going to ride it on the street.
Yet lacks the proven reliability that honda is known for
Honda looks better, but the Z900 would match its engine capabilities after a tune and with 948 instead of 998 and $4,600 less money MSRP.
I don't think the Honda looks better. I'm trying to figure what the hell it is.
@@blipco5 You probably weren't born in the 70's or 80's.
+Lifted_Above ...No.
l love my z900. Add a couple of bucks to the Z's budget suspension and there's no touching it.
He mentioned the motor is based on a 2008 Fireblade so it's probably in the same category.
WOW!!!! WHAT AN INTRO!!! HAD TO SUBSCRIBE!!!!
JUST GORGEOUS!!!! I THINK FOR MY NEXT BIKE I WILL GO WITH THE CB650R I DONT SEE THE NEED FOR 1000CC FOR THE WAY I RIDE
