I ended up buying the Kawasaki and I have ZERO regrets. This bike has character and is an individual. I get loads of compliments from all kinds of people, it looks great. Very comfortable to ride but with a hooligan side that is there if you want it. At 58 years old and after owning a plethora of bikes, this baby is the best!!

As a z900rs owner without having ridden the Honda, I can tell you that the Kawa has plenty of power. It has a lot of torque, almost 100nm. I love second gear, range from 20-125kph and it’s amazing to see the needle shoot up through the analog dial.

While the Honda had a punchier engine, it's also buzzier, and doesn't sound quite as good as the z900. The CB has a far more modern execution so it really depends how retro you like to go. If what you're looking for is 1980's Retro, the Kawasaki crushes the Honda. I voted for the Honda. Its looks hook me. I have a feeling it will be overlooked by those walking through the parking lot. But I see the build quality, Honda reliability, and less manic overtone. It is a great bike to park next to my Panigale. Sort of the anti-character bike. Tone it down a bit and just sooth me as I ride. YET, I want it to perform when called upon. The looks to me are exactly what I believe Honda is trying to convey. Much like Porsche's iconic evolution in it's 911 styling, Honda took an in-line 4 UJM and pushed it through time into a modern classic look. Brilliant! It should look just as good in 10 years as it does today!

the Z900RS is a great bike to ride and has the looks but when you run the numbers it is $2,500 over priced. For example the standard Kawasaki Z900 has more power, better suspension and is about $3k cheaper. So really you are paying more for looks with less power and average suspension. One of my fellow riders was seriously looking at the Z900RS for AUD$18k until a Yamaha dealer offered him a new XJR1300 with a full front and back Ohlins suspension for AUD$12,500.

Honda has not even one retro element.
On the other hand, RS900 has analog panel, retro seat, old fashion mirrors, painted tail (70's) and much more. If RS had twin exhausts and twin rear shocks it would have been the absolute modern-retro bike.

I own both these bikes. Kawasaki is more relaxed and a great looking bike. The Honda has better handling and I have the red one which is extremely nice. My Honda is not jerky at all, it’s actually smoother than my Kawasaki maybe because I ride it in rain mode. I prefer the Kawasaki on Highway as it keeps the wind at bay. I am looking to buy a BMW R9T next year.

I have seen it at shows and in the showroom and it stands out due to its sheer presence, superb fit and finish. Of course, I have not ridden the thing, but it absolutely stands out.
In early 2017 I went for the XSR9000. Honda is definitely a cut above my own bike. If I had unlimited resources, I would not hesitate to get one to replace my existing bike however I am pretty happy with my bike as it is.

Great looks, more power, better suspension, better fuelling, better performance, beautifully built - but we don't want it, we want the Kawi because the exhaust makes weird noises and it's plush. Just goes to show how subjective motorcycle choice is, and that's the way it should be.
I agree about the XSR. Great engine, but how hard is it to make switchgear that goes "click"? All the XSR/MT range looks and feels cheap next to the Japanese built CB's.

Probably on fire next to a garage somewhere. I had an FZ1, tried to figure out why it was hard to start and had dim headlights, and found that Yamaha "engineers" had forgotten what a relay was, and routed the entire +12V line directly through the ignition switch and back to the battery through a narrow gauge wire that was dropping 3V for the whole 12V system.
Which is a very long winded way of saying Yamaha can fuck themselves forever and should stick to tuning forks.

I have a Z 900rs and I had the opportunity to test the Honda CB 1000 extensively. Sure, the Honda has more power and is technically a little more modern. (In this respect, you can not compare the machines at all, here would have been taken the Z 1000).
Nevertheless, I would not swap. I love the classic fittings and the classic look. The Kawasaki is a modern motorcycle with a good classic look. Some manufacturers also build this, e.g. Triumph, BMW, Ducati, but the Kawasaki is the only four-cylinder. (Oh, that's not quite true, there is still the classic Honda CB 1100th This Honda is really "old school" but also has their disadvantages.) Ultimately, you have to decide. Both are great motorcycles.

I'd rather save a couple grand and buy the stock Z900RS. I'd buy an aftermarket cowling for the headlight for less than $200 ( same cowling as the retro model already available). I'd get the black, or midnight blue (whatever it is). All I remember about that poop brown color on the original oldie was that it didn't hold up to the weather. I'd spend my money on putting clip-ons on the stock bike as well. Can't say anything wrong about the Honda. I'm sure build quality is excellent. I did sit on the original CB1100 when it was first reintroduced and the seat was a brick. Not a fan of tons of chrome to polish either. I sat on the 900RS when it came out and the tank just seemed really wide to me. Like top heavy wide. Right now I have a 2018 MT-07. I'm 6'2", 170#. Reach to the bars is ok but too upright for me. The whole bike feels like an adult version of a Honda Grom! Beautiful motor and sound but they really need to put it on different platforms. And for God's sake would someone please put a shaft drive on ANY of these bikes? I like maintenance free. No one makes a mid displacement bike with shaft drive since Yamaha in the Seca era of the 80's! Not talking about cruisers. Not my style. And the Honda NT07 is just slow as hell, not to mention discontinued. Loved my 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo. All day comfy. Rode Iron Butt with it stock and everyone freaked out.

2010 the Z1000 got a 1043cc engine, based on the newly released 2011 Ninja 1000. Rumors are the engine was a ZX-10R derived design.
Still today, the Ninja 1000SX (slightly different name, same bike) runs the same 1043cc engine with additional refinements and technology.
Z900 was a replacement for the former Z800. The engine for the Z900 is based on the 1043cc engine, but proprietary cylinders, heads, valvetrain. Same stroke length, smaller bores. Result is a creamy smooth, very torquey 948cc engine. You're read many people saying "it is a sleeved-down Ninja 1000 engine" but manufactures are not using sleeves. Those went out in the 90's basically, with today's sprayed-on ultra-hard plating for aluminum alloy cylinder walls. The result is less weight, cylinders closer together, narrower engine blocks.

Suzuki and Honda have done so with newer engines in their naked bikes and it bears these results- More hp , higher price.
