"Please tell me this movie did not flop!" Sad Fact: This movie flopped due to some rather poor marketing and being released at the same time as Shrek. While a animated show was being made in case it did successful, the few episodes completed were turned into a Direct-To-DVD sequel (called "Atlantis: Milo's Return") to make up for the money lost from its box-office failure.
it is so sad that both Atlantis and Treasure Planet flopped just because of poor planning and marketing from the company, they legit just did not care or lost interest and did minimum for people to see which is so frustrating cause they're such incredible movies..
You know what's even more depressing? Greg Weisman, the creator of Gargoyles and The Spectacular Spider-Man were going to be a head writer on that spin-off.
Once in an interview Tom Holland said if he could pick a classic Disney character to play in a live-action adaptation he’d pick Milo Tatch of “Atlantis”
It's one of those films where even if you don't care for the story or the idea, the side characters and the comedy are so well done. Underrated and worth a watch
Also, I dont know anyone (girl or boy) who didnt have a little crush on the baddie girl, shes just too hot. Honestly, all the girls in that movie are hot lol
Personally I’d say the characters are a lot more interesting than the story itself. I found it hilarious the movie had a more adult feel, specifically with the joking around with the team and why they were on the mission, and coming to realize how selfish their actions were when realizing there were people in Atlantis.
Something that a lot of people don't pick up on is, Helga initially WANTED to change the plan. This indicates that she actually cared about what happened to the Atlanteans, or at least wasn't a total psycho.
I don’t really think so. Yes she does feel a little uncomfortable with the plan realizing there were people in Atlantis, but she still led the attack on Milo and Kida, and got furious when Rourke betrayed her. Her firing a flare at Rourke was more of a “if I can’t have the crystal, neither will you” Plus Helga was originally supposed to be the villain in the deleted sequel, becoming a weird Atlantian cyborg upon somehow surviving the volcanic eruption
This is my number 1 Disney movie. I used to rewatch the tape all the time and even had the computer game,a Milo doll, and a crystal necklace. I even use to watch the TV episodes squished together sequel cause I loved this movie so much. Disney did this movie so dirty and I'm glad it gets more attention/love as time goes on.
I was similar - I remember going to a random beach store with my parents and seeing a clay-and-quartz necklace that looked like the ones from Atlantis, and I wore that thing *everywhere* for years!
Same! I owned a Milo, Vinnie, and Rourke action figure plus a Leviathan toy that could detach into different things. My sister had a Milo and Kida doll and crystal necklace. We adored this movie and still do to this day!
Why is it that the two movies that are PERFECT for Disney live action remakes, treasure planet and this, ARE FORGOTTEN BY TIME, it’s scarily appropriate for Atlantis and a lost planet that holds all the treasure of the star systems, HOW HAVE THESE NOT BEEN MADE INTO LIVE ACTION YET, 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Because the live-action remakes are just to milk the success of the original animated version, and Atlantis and Treasure Planet are passion projects that higher ups didn't really want to happen so they under- or mis-advertised them (I think one of them was even released alongside Harry Potter) so they would intentionally not perform well at the box office. Now, because the movies didn't sell as well as the Renaissance era movies, the Disney higher ups probably have an excuse to not think live action versions of them would sell with audiences, overlooking the post-release following the movies have.
@@aaronace4754 Ikr?? The sequel felt strange compared to the first one....some scenes and plots were hard for me to comprehend. I actually watched this backwards 😅 Story: So what happened was is that I had a DVD of Atlantis: Milo Returns from my dad (this was before Netflix existed and I was very young) I thought the sequel was only a stand alone movie 💀 Years later, 16 year-old me, has Netflix, Notice Atlantis for the first time, clicked and watched the movie and I felt robbed 😭💀 The End 😂
This has been my favorite Disney movie ever since it first came out, and unfortunately it didn't do well at the box office. That's also the reason why Kida isn't an official Disney princess; there is literally a requirement for the movie to do well in order for the lead woman to be considered a Disney princess.
If this movie got re-releases that turned out to be a success or was used in success line of long term merchandise or others forms of show (video games, stage, ect) that was a success then Kida could then be open to become a Disney Princess. Alas that not likely at all. Because of the VCR and now Streaming any movies to get a movie theater re-releases is extremely rare (and even if they do it would be for movies with less risk or at least hope to earn a few bucks to pay for the re-releases costs) unlike how it was in the past before the invention of the VCR. Many Disney movies that first bombed in the theaters during the debut run might later find great success with re-releases being able to earn back the production costs and make a huge profit due to the changing of the times/cultures/economies or having been shown on TV so often due to that movie's cheapness to run for various networks to air it that after enough times it could gained a large cult following. Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty were 2 movies that bombed and lost tons of money for Disney when it first came out but later there Re-Releases made them very successful due to different reasons. Atlantis however came out when the VCR and DVDs was already invented and stopped essentially 99% of movies from getting any movie theater re-releases. DVD sales was decent and in time people began to enjoy many Disney movies from this 'experimental age' that first bombed in theaters. Streaming and these reaction videos seem to help such movies as awareness (reaction videos can be a form of marketing for those unaware of a movie's existence and offer a form of first experience) and assess to them from Streaming (people pay for one other form of content from the service but while having the service might check out some past made if recommended or learn of existence somehow). Disney's card game Lorcana has just released a set called "Enter the Inklands" which contains within Atlantis characters, items, and location so while small each introduction from other forms of media and entertainment can grant the possibly to help. However I don't think Kida will ever become a "Disney Princess". The only exception is if Disney executives and creators recognizes/see a profit from it's growing cult following and maybe decides to makes a Atlantis live action movie as it's '2nd chance' and it does very well. Maybe a great/well made and profitable Disney Princesses movie with a strong narrative that has more then the official but has appearances from the unofficial Disney Princesses. A major narrative & gameplay driven Disney Princess video game was made where Kida makes a surprise appearance (like a Smash bros announcement that introduces many to a character they didn't know Kida gets a surprise introduction in such a way or EPIC Disney Series that has man 'forgotten characters' that have a fanbase, Kingdom Hearts, etc) and that does extremely well.

Honestly this is one of my favorite movies, especially when i was a kid... Like this movie has the perfect balance of like cool action movie, and light hearted adventure..its also got enough bits of comedy that keeps the mood up
so excited to see this reaction!! fun fact: in the original cut, the opening scene was a stormy ship scene depicting vikings trying to use the shepard’s journal to find atlantis before the leviathan swallows them and the book floats to the surface… but the writers decided the sinking of Atlantis set up the emotional stakes/human element and Kida’s character much better so that’s what made the final cut. love the viking scene but glad they changed it, the sinking of atlantis is masterful visual storytelling imo edit: you can still find the cut scene on youtube!!
4:06 Wanna share a cool detail I learnt about some time ago, about the fish in Jebidiah's aquarium!! The reason he knew Milo wasn't crazy wasn't only because the former knew the latter's grandfather, but also because Jebidiah owned fish NOT DISCOVERED AT THAT POINT IN TIME. (I don't know the names of the fish, I wanted to find the tumblr post about it but couldn't 😭). He knew there was more to the world than what's in the books
Anyone else find it funny that Welchy kept saying Vinny's full name the entire time. Like, I know he's first introduced with his full name but still XD
I don't remember seeing this movie in theaters, but I did have it on vhs. Side note: I think the reason why Kida and the other Atlantic citizens couldn't read was because the kingdom was focusing on survival. Like rebuilding homes, searching for food, rebuilding their economy, etc. The king may have been able to read, but based on how the artist drew his eyes, I assume he had become blind.
It’s so underrated but I love this movie so much. I still remember when it first came out and Wendy’s kids meals had the toys and I got a crystal necklace. Best kids toy ever.
I thought those were for McDonald's, I remember the crystal necklace, the drill that makes sparks, the escape ships, the leviathan and the big submarine toys Also I remember the treasure planet toys that were really cool, I remember one that was a binoculars, and if you get all toys you can join all into the treasure map
2:00 well some Norse Settlers came to Ireland and set up towns, so it’s feasible they would have taken the tablet with them. I literally love them both! They almost have the same reactions to this one, and that's prolly because they both don't care showing what they truly think and feel about the films they watch and comment on.
This is one of my old favorites. It's so upsetting that it's so overlooked. And Welchy, remember watching 'Ralph Breaks the Internet'? The scene Vanellope is hanging out with all the Disney princesses? Do u recall seeing Kida among them?...No?....Me neither. That pisses me off too. She is literally the princess of Atlantis, this is a Disney movie, she's awesome, she's charming, she's beautiful, so how was she not included there!?!?!?!?!
Same!! I'm so upset she was denied a place in that scene and on the Disney Princess lineup in general! It was nice to see her cameo in Once Upon a Studio though.
Saw someone else say that a movie has to perform very well for the female lead to qualify as a Disney princess, which unfortunately didn’t happen for Atlantis bc of bad marketing and the fact that it released near the same time as Shrek
WELCHY, PLEASE REACT TO "SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON"! It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time I watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
King Kashekim apparently just bricked up his crystallized wife underneath the city and banned reading for so long that most people forgot just so no one would remember it's his fault atlantis sank...12:27
OMG this was such a joy to see in my notifications! Atlantis the Lost Empire is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I've watched it so many times since I was a little kid! It's arguably one of the most underrated films Disney has produced. Also a few additional comments about this movie and it's history - Sadly, this movie did bomb when it came out; just like a lot of Disney's 2D animated films at the time it. There were a lot of things like 2D animation not being as popular, other classics being released around the same time like the first Shrek movie and so many other factors. And due to its poor reception, this movie sadly gets forgotten a lot of the time. I mean Kida (despite literally holding the title of princess and later queen) isn't present on the Disney princess lineup, which I think is a crime because she is easily one of the coolest Disney princess characters IMO! - About Rourke and his greed. The way I think about it is, people like him aren't just obsessed with acquiring wealth, they want as much wealth as possible. And while discovering a lost city will probably make you rich, bringing back a potential superweapon at a time where we were about to experience one of the largest wars in human history (1914) would probably make you the richest man in the world. I mean there are people nowadays who have more money saved away than most ordinary people will ever see and they're STILL not satisfied.
atlantis is the best 2D animated movie disney ever made. it's so sad that when it first came out, it flopped. now a days, its a certified CLASSIC and a lot of people love it.
Atlantis is definitely one of the best animated movies ever, although I have a fairly long list of animated movies I think are great. So glad your watching it!
If I remember correctly this movie came out at the same time as the 1st Harry Potter movie ... an impossible thing to compete against. It's underappreciated and so funny.
Yep. Grew up with it but it flopped. The bad guy being infected by the crystal spooked me so much ! Very ambitious movie, with beautiful scene and lore, assuming death and tragedy...
This movie is 10/10 for me - animation, well rounded characters (side characters included), comedy, fast paced plot, music, everything is perfect. I like how they tell everyone’s stories, it makes the characters more real to me
I remember seeing this in theaters when I was little and that Leviathan scared the absolute shit outta me. Seeing that thing on the big screen was terrifying. Still one of my favorite films though.
Atlantis is a great underrated animated film because Michael Eisner (former chairman and (demon) chief executive officer (CEO) of The Walt Disney Company from September 1984 to September 2005,) released Atlantis on the exact same day as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. Michael Eisner actually thought teenage boys would rather watch his movie than watch an 88% always sweaty, midriff wearing and weapon totting Angelina Jolie.
Still one of the most criminally underrated Disney movies ever! 😎 Right up there with The Great Mouse Detective, Dick Tracy, Treasure Planet, Newsies, and The Rescuers Down Under!
Honestly, I think that mivie is better in french because some lines are funnier. I don't think Helga died burned alive but died not long after her shot because despite being still alive, she was hurt. About Milo's grandpa, he's just dead because of his age
It took me a while to recognize the difference between Irish and Scottish accents. Now, I'm trying to do the same with British and Australian. I can hear Australian accents more clearly if the speaker goes into an excited rant. I think Milo would be a king consort.
Now you know the love for Atlantis and question why so many dont know about it. The amount of times you were gasping was hilarious, the visuals, score, and the plot are just masterpieces! Aside from Mulan I think this is the only Disney movie where there is a large casualty of death and in multiple scenes too. Mulan just had the Huns, Milo has first the ship then the fireflies and a few more at the end. Pretty impressive for a DISNEY movie.
Welchy I’m so glad you did a commentary on this movie, it is highly underrated! Atlantis the lost empire is my favorite movie of all time, I have watched it so many times! Also, I believe that Kida was able to separate from the crystal because the danger had passed and the Atlantean people were saved, unlike during the cataclysm where her mother was chosen as a host to the crystal. Since the crystal thrives on the collective emotions of the Atlantean people, and many of them were destroyed in the great flood, the crystal could not thrive and Kida’s mother was lost to the crystal forever. After watching this so many times, I think this is the best explanation but I wish they delved deeper into this in the movie! I find the lore behind the crystal absolutely fascinating!
I put off watching this for like 3years after finding out it existed and ever since i watched it last year, its become one of my top 3 animated movies ever. Absolutely LOVE Kida!
I grew up on this movie, and a laser-tag place near my childhood home had this movie as a major portion of its theming (although it wasn't licensed officially). Welcome to the club! It only took you, like, what, 10 seconds? 11, tops.
Dylan in trouble had many similar thoughts about this movie if you two guys did a review video together that would be the best video ive ever seen on youtube!
Im so glad you reacted to this :) I'm turning 30 tomorrow (march 5th), and this is one of my all time fave movies. Top 5 animated and top 10 non animated. Kida is one of my fave animated characters / fave animated princesses. I grew up watching this all the time, and me and my twin constantly quote this movie, especially the *smokes* "were all gonna die", and "four basic food groups" *lists them*, quotes. This is such an amazing movie and I really enjoyed your reaction video. Thanks for a great video :) x
This is my favorite non Disney Princess movie and has been since i was a little kid. The scene where Kida becomes the Crystal is my favorite in the entire movie and even inspired a scene in one of my books
I was eight when this movie came out and fell completely in love. It’s fun to see adults watch it for the first time and appreciate it - and to know that eight-year-old me had good Disney movie taste 😆
You don’t have to pit Kidagakash & Chel against each other, they are both unique and gorgeous women who confused *many* young girls. Between those two and Shego from Kim Possible it’s a complete miracle that I thought I was straight until I was 19.
Welchy mate, if you think Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a forgotten Disney movie we need to learn you a thing about a little picture called The Black Cauldron. If you think Mole was annoying in this, Gurgi is next level. He makes Jar Jar Binks look chill and lovable.
Fun fact: The man that did most of the art and designs for the Hellboy comics did most of the concept art for the characters in this film! Mike Magnola. His art rules. Also, while Mole is bad.... I know of a worse one. There's a MUCH older Disney movie called The Black Cauldron, with the very bane of my existence... Gurgie. You should watch it and feel my pain. :)
There’s a line from this movie I’ve been dying to say in a game of Dungeons and Dragons since the first time I saw this movie: “Alright, who’s not dead? Sound off”

OMG this was such a joy to see in my notifications! Atlantis the Lost Empire is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I've watched it so many times since I was a little kid! It's arguably one of the most underrated films Disney has produced.
Also a few additional comments about this movie and it's history
- Sadly, this movie did bomb when it came out; just like a lot of Disney's 2D animated films at the time it.
Finally! This was my favourite movie as a kid. I almost applied to archaeology at uni because of it. Such a great film!
Aww why didn’t ya! I would’ve been hooked if I saw this when I was younger 🤣
Got into vet school, but my family still joke about me finding Atlantis@@Welchy
atlantis is the best 2D animated movie disney ever made. it's so sad that when it first came out, it flopped. now a days, its a certified CLASSIC and a lot of people love it.
Atlantis is definitely one of the best animated movies ever, although I have a fairly long list of animated movies I think are great.
So glad your watching it!
This movie and Treasure Planet are the most underrated Disney movies in existence!
Andrey closes the watertight door on a guy: "I'm telling St. Peter it's your fault I'm here!" X3
Atlantis is from the same era like Treasure Planet, the overlooked Gems of early 2000's 2x3D animation
This movie is 10/10 for me - animation, well rounded characters (side characters included), comedy, fast paced plot, music, everything is perfect. I like how they tell everyone’s stories, it makes the characters more real to me
This is an amazing movie. So glad yoy watched it! Please also watch Treasure Planet! I'm all for a Back to the Future marothon!
I remember seeing this in theaters when I was little and that Leviathan scared the absolute shit outta me. Seeing that thing on the big screen was terrifying. Still one of my favorite films though.
0:39 I can see it but not the point that it’s 100, But I can definitely see it
OMG!!!!!!!! you are finally watching Atlants!!!! This really makes my day
Yayyy
Atlantis is a great underrated animated film because Michael Eisner (former chairman and (demon) chief executive officer (CEO) of The Walt Disney Company from September 1984 to September 2005,) released Atlantis on the exact same day as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. Michael Eisner actually thought teenage boys would rather watch his movie than watch an 88% always sweaty, midriff wearing and weapon totting Angelina Jolie.
Wait until welchy finds out Audrey is 18 and milo is 32
How do you know his âge ?
Still one of the most criminally underrated Disney movies ever!
😎
Right up there with The Great Mouse Detective, Dick Tracy, Treasure Planet, Newsies, and The Rescuers Down Under!
The gears to the clocks in Great Mouse Detective will forever be burned into my memory
@@nbunnysnowboard
That was the first sequence of CGI animation in a Disney animated movie.
😎
@@wattsink2009 and it’s so much better than cgi today! Lol
6:37
LOL, Welchy got scared again.
😁
Honestly, I think that mivie is better in french because some lines are funnier.
I don't think Helga died burned alive but died not long after her shot because despite being still alive, she was hurt.
About Milo's grandpa, he's just dead because of his age
Ah, a childhood favorite!
Yes please do watch back to the future
It took me a while to recognize the difference between Irish and Scottish accents. Now, I'm trying to do the same with British and Australian. I can hear Australian accents more clearly if the speaker goes into an excited rant.
I think Milo would be a king consort.
Atlantis and Treasure Planet are 2 of the greatest and most underrated Disney movies.
18:59
LOL, Welchy got scared again!
😁
😭😭
Milo is the hottest animated character I've ever seen. I watched this movie as a child and now this man is standard and lowkey my type
My whole D&D group agrees.
You have no idea how excited I got when I saw this channel did Atlantis. One of my top 3 movies of all time.
I grew up on this movie, and a laser-tag place near my childhood home had this movie as a major portion of its theming (although it wasn't licensed officially). Welcome to the club! It only took you, like, what, 10 seconds? 11, tops.
I'm so glad I got to watch this in a theater when it came out. Criminally underrated movie.
Could it be possible for Welchy and Dylan is in trouble, my two favorite movie commentary channels, to have a collab?👀
Dylan in trouble had many similar thoughts about this movie
if you two guys did a review video together that would be the best video ive ever seen on youtube!
6:58 actually, no she couldn't if the water hit the Boiler, that sub would have been scrap, to put it nicely.
This movie is so underrated! Thanks for watching it
This one is so underrated. I love the soundtrack. The story has a lot of similarities with Stargate.
This movie truly is something special! im glad you took time watching it welchy!
Im so glad you reacted to this :)
I'm turning 30 tomorrow (march 5th), and this is one of my all time fave movies.
This is absolutely an underrated treasure of Disney.
Now the sequel……we don’t talk about that.
I clicked on this video so fast!! A big fan of how completely flabbergasted you were the whole time lmao
:DD
"is this the quirky funny sidekick of this movie" you mean the entire crew?
Ah Atlantis. Definitely one of the most underrated Disney movies. And probably the one with the highest death count.
6:19… because he is…. Right? Or was I the only one down bad for him as a little girl.
NO YOURE NOT ME TOO
This is my favorite non Disney Princess movie and has been since i was a little kid. The scene where Kida becomes the Crystal is my favorite in the entire movie and even inspired a scene in one of my books
This is my absolute favourite Disney movie! All the characters are so well written, and the story is so good!
I keep forgetting, from one rewatch of this movie to another, who the good guys/bad guys are. It's as enjoyable to discover every time.
If you love this era of animation, Treasure Planet and Titan AE are a must!
This movie made me realize I was gay because the way child and teenage me was down bad for Helga Sinclair was hilarious
I was eight when this movie came out and fell completely in love. It’s fun to see adults watch it for the first time and appreciate it - and to know that eight-year-old me had good Disney movie taste 😆
19:30 it did but that’s because Disney had bad advertising at the time, either princess and the frog or tangled kind of revitalised the studio
You don’t have to pit Kidagakash & Chel against each other, they are both unique and gorgeous women who confused *many* young girls. Between those two and Shego from Kim Possible it’s a complete miracle that I thought I was straight until I was 19.
"how about we make a new one...together??".....Listen Welchy...I adore you but Idk if we have that kind of relationship to build an Empire together 😅
Want to see another criminally underrated Disney movie?
😎
Take a look at The Great Mouse Detective!
Oh my god! Atlantis was another one of my favorites back in the early 2000s!
Fun fact:
The man that did most of the art and designs for the Hellboy comics did most of the concept art for the characters in this film!
Sound off”
This is a film that HAS to be live action next to Treasure Planet.
Welchy: * sees woman *
Welchy: "the main character will get with her"
12:07 "Is there something wrong with me?"
Yes, yes there is.
This is the kind of channel you find and stay up all night watching. ❤
he was practicing his proposal to the board by pretending the statues were the museum board.
One of my favorite Disney movies ever. I remember watching it as a kid and playing with the Kida doll 🥹
YES, MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIE! I was obsessed with this as a kid, man.
I love this movie so much! The adventure, mystery, action, soundtrack, characters, whole of story. The childhood days LET'S GO 🧭🌋🤩
"...which either means it's bad or its underrated."
CRIMINALLY underrated 😂
