her remembering the smell of peppermint actually isn’t too far fetched because smell has the strongest link to memory/triggering memories than any other sense
Yeah, this is why lots of favorite smells are due to the memories linked to it For example: one of my favorite smells is cornbread, because sometimes after school I wound open the door of my house and the warm scent of freshly-pulled-outa-the-oven cornbread would just hit me. It was one of the few times I'd actually be able to have some nice food and peace at the time, so cornbread to me is an almost calming smell (I'm guessing this is also why people smell their crushes/partner's clothing)
That's actually really fascinating to me. What about hearing music? Since music has such a strong effect on our brains. I might go look some stuff up now lmao
@@phoenixwing5133 I wouldn't really count on it... but then again from what I remember hearing, music can (temporarily) help alhtzheimerz patients remember some parts of their past (like what happened in Coco) I could also be wrong, but I've heard that music, and maybe even singing, is stored in a different part of the brain than just normal speaking Still I hope you have an easy time researching and stuff!

The biggest difference I know of is that Anastasia was not alive the whole time. She died along with her family. The main reason they believed she was alive was that when they looked over the bodies, they didn't initially find her. She was the very last one killed, she woke up as the soldiers were carrying the bodies to a mass grave and got clubbed. You could definitely use that to create a fictional what it story of her crawling out of the grave and escaping.
Her younger brother's body was not found with the rest of the family either. They were found together elsewhere. The theory I've heard is that the bolsheviks had an attack of conscience regarding these two because they were pretty much just kids, and decided not to just dump them in with the rest.

The real Grigori Rasputin was a monk and healer who managed to get in good with the Romanovs after he healed their hemophilic son, Alexi. Mostly he just stopped the blood letting practice and let him get rest. Rasputin became an adviser to Nicholas and was much loved by the Empress, Grand Duchess, and the children. Ultimately his downfall came from the abuse of his power to satisfy his addictions and his manipulation of the Czar from interfering in affairs of state causing Russia to suffer. 1. The smell of peppermint memory is alluding to the fact that smell is actually the closest sense to our memories and therefore is the easiest trigger to remember things. 2. The photo that Anastasia has where she mentions her sister saying it looked like a pig riding a donkey is not only an actual drawing the REAL Anastasia drew but that story is also true as well so when you mentioned the picture 'Is shit' I laughed so hard because I could just imagine the look on this real little girl who drew that hearing you say that to her face. XD This poor dead girl getting so much slander. 3. "That thing gets a Happy Ending?" He gets his own movie, too. XD A movie that is actually really good if you can forget that there is any connection to Anastasia.
I love this movie. Random fact that picture that Anastasia gave her grandmother in the beginning of the film is actually an actual drawing she drew for her grandmother in real life. And the people that were in that dream scene I’m pretty sure that was her little brother & sisters & dad. But when I found out that it’s based off the real story I was like “that’s so sad but the movie is really really good. Just wish that the real life story didn’t have a sad ending but wish it ended with a happy one. Also I’m pretty sure the dog represents or symbolizes (or whatever the word I’m looking for is) is the dog that used to be her sister Maria’s dog but during their quarantine/lockdown the pup became more of Anastasia pup. If I remember correctly I read that in one of the books about their family and what actually happened. Also the live action is also really really good. Definitely recommend the live action Anastasia:once upon time. (It’s not a musical but it has music in it.) Love your videos!
This was my favorite princess movie growing up. The videotape would be in the VCR near constantly when I came home and it still works today. I'm 26 now, so that video tape is a trooper.
'I'm so smart, why don't I just write a script?' I would absolutely love to see a film made by you! I mean... that would be just next level film making😂
All I'm gonna say is that had Dimitri just told Anya that it was him, he was the one that opened the wall, that she is the Princess, had he told the Empress from the start at the Ballet things would have been different. I still like how it turned out.
Though he had no official office in the Russian Orthodox Church, nor was he tonsured as a monk, there is plenty of evidence that Rasputin was a holy man. Though unofficial, he was an ascetic and a mystic. There are even some efforts today to have him canonized as a saint, considering he was dearly loved and relied upon by the Royal Family, who are canonized saints (martyrs). Though I still enjoy it for what it is, this movie certainly did him dirty.
I was and still am obsessed with this movie! I would even watch the extra features on the DVD and sing the songs in other languages. My hubby was able to take me to see the Broadway musical when they came to New Orleans a few months ago and it was such an amazing event! Obviously some things were changed in the storyline and some additional songs, but most of my favorites were still there.
the disrespect for poor Bartok! if he annoyed Welchy in his brief appearances in this movie, wait til he finds out there's a whole direct-to-video "sequel" that stars Bartok and no on else from this movie lmao
This movie is inspired by the rumor which started after the Russian Revolution in 1917. The Czars of Russia, The Romanov family were massacred (in Yekaterinburg) after the Czar abdicated that year and rumors started to spread of Anastasia and her younger brother Alexei about they scaping and being alive (which later bringed a lot of girls to say they were Anastasia) then in the 90s when the bodys of the Russian family were found they discovered that it was not Anastasia but her sister Maria and Alexei's bodies that were separated from the others but everyone died in 1917 that night. It was a tragedy. (The movie is inspired by those girls who tried to make the Empress (the Czars Mother who was still alive) believe Anastasia was alive and it was them.
16:20 This drawing in the movie is really based on an actual drawing the real-life Anastasia made. The rest of the movie isn't very accurate at all, but that drawing's real. Also, unrelated, Josephine Baker and her pet cheetah, Chiquita, both show up together during the "Paris is the Key" song number! Josephine is even wearing her banana skirt, but it's with a sparkly unitard and therefore much more PG than her real-life outfits which didn't have much else other than the skirt and some jewels.
This is a movie that, as a child, gave me genuine nightmares. I was so afraid of Rasputin I couldn't watch the scene of his song without crying for years.
6:54 The "depths of hell" you're referring to is actually purgatory, or limbo. Basically it's a type of place where souls go in some religions in order to finish some business before moving on, whether to Heaven or Hell. I remember learning in Sunday school that sometimes churches would ask for a donation, usually money, in order to get someone who has died out of purgatory and into Heaven. Unfortunately this was common for a long time in the Catholic Church, my religion.
The point of Bartok (the bat) was to sell toys and to be the comic relief. Fox Animation Studios had great success in selling toys of Batty Koda (the bat; voiced by the late Robin Williams) from FernGully: The Last Rainforest animated film (1992) and they wanted to repeat that success with Bartok. 🦇💰🤑
A film that just randomly popped into my head today which I forgot about for a while is the animated film, 'Igor' which is basically Frankenstein's assistant Igor but he gets his own story, and creates his own monster and everything. Since Halloween is coming up it might be a good one to watch and I'm sure that a lot of us remember seeing it as children, you may even have seen it already. Also, John Cusack who voices Dimitri provides the voice for the character of Igor.
Rasputin actually died from drowning. He was poisoned and shot about six times but didn't die. Before he was welcomed by Queen Alexandria to help with Alexei's hemophilia (an inherited disease where your blood can't clot), and he was thought to have supernatural powers. The musical on Broadway is a bit more realistic bc it doesn't include Rasputin and instead has post-Bolshevik revolution military officials.
I love this movie. This was Don Bluth’s second to last theatrical animated film (the last being Titan A.E.). I definitely recommend seeing more of his films; The Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and All Dogs Go To Heaven.
I myself am a 28 yr old male adult, and this movie has been in my top 10 favorite animated movies since I was a kid. So, no, there is no shame in being an adult male who loves this movie lol

Love your personality, you aren’t crazy loud, you make silly jokes but they are great, you point out the useless characters lol great job! 👏 😊. Also, I know this vid was 3 months ago, but I hope you are having a great day today.
While the movie very well wouldn't be much different without Bartok the albino bat hanging around, I am, and have always been, quite fond of the thing. 😂
I have literally watched this commentary five times in the last 24hrs. Anastasia is an incredible movie and Welchy, you bring the humour and freshness into what would be a pretty dark film. THANK YOU WELCHY!
Fun fact: this movie was set in 1917 during the Russian Revolution and the villain was Gregory Rasputin (a so-called holy man who could apparently heal others with magical powers). However he went mad with power and he began influencing the Russian royal family so he got assassinated by a bunch of army officers
This was based on grand duchess Anastasia from Russia she was 17 when she died (1918). She didn’t get buried till 1998 though. In reality she was killed with her family by a group of bolsheviks.
This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid. I remember it very fondly. Different smells are actually a great way to unearth buried memories. For instance, whenever I smell a particular flower, I'm transported back to my babysitter's house from when I was 2ish years old and my favorite little red mailbox toy with a plastic letter. A deep sense of calm falls over me. A similar thing happens whenever I start to smell the dead leaves scent when Fall is approaching. My memory is garbage otherwise.
Oh I LOVE this Don Bluth movie!!!!! I grew up watching it and I memorized the songs. Two of my favorite songs are Journey To The Past and Once Upon A December.
"IN THE DARK OF THE NIIIIGHT..." My favorite Villain song, absolutely! Jonathan Young did the best rendition of it, in my mind, but the original is still awesome.
Aloha Welchy! I've been a fan of yours for such a long time! If you want to watch a fun spooky movie, now is a great time for the 91s Addam's family because Wednesday is coming out in November! Aloha from Hawaii!
Just a quick question…Welchy does know that this movie is tangentially related to an actual historical event right??? Like the Romanovs were real and so was Rasputin, 🤣 I believe Rasputin was known for being a holy man and healer as well as the rumor he was doinking Anastasia‘s mother which is part of why Royal Loyalists killed him….where as the common people are who killed the Romanov Family
My high school history class was studying the Russian revolution when this movie came out so my teacher took us all to see it, and then we went to Burger King afterwards and I got a Dmitri figurine that sat on top of my computer for years afterwards. Good times. (And no, my teacher didn't imply that this was at all historically accurate, but we had fun dissecting it and comparing it to what was actually known in history.)
Yes, that’s Angela Lansbury, she’s actually in another Disney movie called Bedknobs and Broomsticks which is one of my personal favourites. Also, the dog’s name is Pooka and he’s a boy. Whenever I see this movie, I automatically hear At the Beginning by Donna Lewis and Richard Marx because it used to play before the movie started on my VHS tape. 😂 It’s still banging. I used to belt out the lyrics when I was alone as a kid.
Goodness I loved this movie when I was younger. The memory-dancing scene in the old palace still gives me all the CHILLS! Truly gorgeous animation 💜✨ (Also I think I may have had a crush on Dimitri too at one point 🤣)
Your insight on the pedophiles liking more milk in their tea seems to track at least in another movie. In "The little girl who lives down the lane" featuring Jodie foster when she's 13 yrs old, Martin sheen plays a man who has an affinity for underage girls and the final scene of the movie shows Jodies character serving them tea and she apparently puts more milk in her tea than his and he says he wants her cuppa because he prefers more milk in his tea. Very long winded thought - but this just reminded me of thus film tidbit lol
Ahh Anastasia. I loved this movie as a child, and watched it so many times on my VHS. And at a time I had memorized the entire lyrics to Once Upon a Dream. Great reaction though. Commentary wise and you singing with the a few of the songs 😆 And aww your dog is cute.

I firmly believe the vilain's sidekick thing was only added to make this more of a kids movie because it got too dark at times
A sidekick also provides someone for the villain to have dialogue with
He also has his own movie, called Bartok the magnificent.
"Is this going into an animated Titanic?"
Oh, dear god, you don't know, do you?
LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL MANS RIGHT HERE
STOP YOU
You both should react to pocohantis
The fact that Welchy got through who knows how much of the movie not realizing the dog did have a name cracks me up (It's Pooka btw)
Aww that was sweet of him ^^
the disrespect for poor Bartok! if he annoyed Welchy in his brief appearances in this movie, wait til he finds out there's a whole direct-to-video "sequel" that stars Bartok and no on else from this movie lmao
This is my favourite animated film ever, glad you watched and liked it. It's so amazing because of the voice acting, music and sweet storyline
This and the prince of Egypt for me. I couldn’t choose between the two
This is a movie that, as a child, gave me genuine nightmares. I was so afraid of Rasputin I couldn't watch the scene of his song without crying for years.
"He's either a gold digger or he thinks she's really pretty."
........... honestly, both 😂
6:54 The "depths of hell" you're referring to is actually purgatory, or limbo.
In the dark of the night song is such a villainy underrated masterpiece.
I'm glad this movie has been getting more attention. It's so criminally underrated.
She doesn't remember because she hit her head.
The puppy is called Pooka! He's also the playable character in the Anastasia PC game. I still have the disc somewhere, after 20-odd years or so.
....there is a PC game!!!???
@@hazbinotakusimp2182 Yeah! _Anastasia: Adventures with Pooka and Bartok_ came out in 1997; same year as the movie, I believe
Ooooh!
Your ears are in fact very good, the Dowager Empress _is_ played by Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast!
I agree 1000% this movie has been one of my favs for AWHILE now 😢deserves so much more credit tbh
I myself am a 28 yr old male adult, and this movie has been in my top 10 favorite animated movies since I was a kid. So, no, there is no shame in being an adult male who loves this movie lol
I always thought she lost her memory from stress and trauma, as well as the head injury. It happens sometimes
Lol your face was the most red when you were talking about them loving each other, you could see it happening as you kept going. Love your personality, you aren’t crazy loud, you make silly jokes but they are great, you point out the useless characters lol great job! 👏 😊. Also, I know this vid was 3 months ago, but I hope you are having a great day today.
Aww thank you! 😊
While the movie very well wouldn't be much different without Bartok the albino bat hanging around, I am, and have always been, quite fond of the thing. 😂
How does bro have a twin sister, heterochromia and is Scottish? He's just too interesting it ain't fair.
🤣🤣
Thank you for making my great day a bit more terri...wait, what am i supposed to say?
😂😂
this movie was a MASTERPIECE. im glad you watched it✨️
One of my favorites growing up 💜💜💜
I’d love a series about Rasputin. In real life they shot him, poisoned him, drowned him and he still didn’t die
woah, how did he survive all that? No wonder they had inspo for him not dying in this movie
Rasputin was built differently.
We Stan our man's Rasputin
I have literally watched this commentary five times in the last 24hrs. Anastasia is an incredible movie and Welchy, you bring the humour and freshness into what would be a pretty dark film. THANK YOU WELCHY!
Bro, I love(d) this movie. Mad respect to your sister for also liking Anastasia!
Fun fact: this movie was set in 1917 during the Russian Revolution and the villain was Gregory Rasputin (a so-called holy man who could apparently heal others with magical powers). However he went mad with power and he began influencing the Russian royal family so he got assassinated by a bunch of army officers
7:21 Bro, you keep missing so much information as its presented to you 😂
I’m so glad you watched Anastasia!!!! It’s definitely my favorite animated movie and I was so excited for your opinion on it.
Fun fact! The little bat in this movie, Bartok, has a movie spinoff of his own, called "Bartok the Magnificent". XD
It was this movie and quest for Camelot that got me into animated musicals
This was based on grand duchess Anastasia from Russia she was 17 when she died (1918). She didn’t get buried till 1998 though. In reality she was killed with her family by a group of bolsheviks.
Still my favorite princess movie of all time ( beside Esmeralda and others) and I can still hear the melody to once upon a December.
your sister has impeccable taste
This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid. I remember it very fondly. Different smells are actually a great way to unearth buried memories. For instance, whenever I smell a particular flower, I'm transported back to my babysitter's house from when I was 2ish years old and my favorite little red mailbox toy with a plastic letter. A deep sense of calm falls over me. A similar thing happens whenever I start to smell the dead leaves scent when Fall is approaching. My memory is garbage otherwise.
Remember that she fell and hit her head after the grandmother lost her grip on Anastasia's hand
The dream scene in the musical is sooo intense and dark and creepy.
I L-O-V-E THIS MOVIE
I remember seeing this film on video tape. Best childhood movie! 🤩😍 Also I’m 100% Dimitri simp
SAME IM IN LOVE W DIMITRIII
Oh I LOVE this Don Bluth movie!!!!! I grew up watching it and I memorized the songs. Two of my favorite songs are Journey To The Past and Once Upon A December.
This is a fun animated romantic comedy. I am so glad u reacted and enjoyed it
I love the dance scene. Ana is the only one who has a reflection, and it's a nice touch.
"IN THE DARK OF THE NIIIIGHT..."
My favorite Villain song, absolutely! Jonathan Young did the best rendition of it, in my mind, but the original is still awesome.
My friend this movie is based on the mystery of Anastasia. She existed in real life same with Rasputin and the whole royal family.
one of my favorite moviessss, glad you watched it! also, if you havent watched perks of being a wallflower, u better watch it! it's such a good movie
12:51 Vlad is THE man. You see what he did there? 👌 Oh my god 😆
Aloha Welchy! I've been a fan of yours for such a long time! If you want to watch a fun spooky movie, now is a great time for the 91s Addam's family because Wednesday is coming out in November! Aloha from Hawaii!
11:38 Your reaction to this scene had me on the floor 😂😂😂😂😂
Truly gorgeous animation 💜✨
(Also I think I may have had a crush on Dimitri too at one point 🤣)
Bartok actually got his own spinoff movie
"This is more like it: No beating around the bush - DEATH!" XD
Anastasia and Dmitri have better chemistry than rose and Jack in titanic
i’m glad to inform you that one of your subscribers (me) is called Anastasia and bonus, my dad’s name is Dimitri
it's one of the best movies ever tbh still love it to this day~ been wanting someone to react to it and finally! lol
i think you’re the first person i know who didn’t love bartock 😂😂 i love that little bat
the "princess" in OLd Rusia were called GrandDutcheses
Your insight on the pedophiles liking more milk in their tea seems to track at least in another movie. In "The little girl who lives down the lane" featuring Jodie foster when she's 13 yrs old, Martin sheen plays a man who has an affinity for underage girls and the final scene of the movie shows Jodies character serving them tea and she apparently puts more milk in her tea than his and he says he wants her cuppa because he prefers more milk in his tea.
Very long winded thought - but this just reminded me of thus film tidbit lol
*this
Love Welchy so much
Ahh Anastasia. I loved this movie as a child, and watched it so many times on my VHS. And at a time I had memorized the entire lyrics to Once Upon a Dream.
Great reaction though. Commentary wise and you singing with the a few of the songs 😆
And aww your dog is cute.
This music is epic written by Steve Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens who wrote the musicals, Seusical, Once on this Island, Ragtime, My Favorite Year, Dessa Rose, The Glorious Ones, and Rocky and of course their most recent stage musical of Anastasia.... They are brilliant.
I watch this movie every December because *once upon a December*
I loved this reaction, thanks for sharing!
Just wait til he finds out Bartok got his own movie
I've been waiting for this!!!
