Over 6000 negative reviews on steam, clearly this is terrible publicity for the game, I mean no one is ever going to buy this in the coming months if they check the steam reviews or thumbs. If only there was a way to get rid of these reviews, like removing the game from steam for a few days..... Got to love PR departments, re-launching the game with a clean slate, call me cynical but this is my take on the situation.

Someone described the Batmobile's handling to me in this game once: "It's like riding a unicycle over ice that's been coated in oil."
The game is definitely worth a buy. But the Batmobile gameplay, which makes up nearly 40% of forced gameplay, makes me want to burn my retinas. That and the terrible fps would be my only complaints.
The part with the bunny just killed me on the spot!
And to think all the big reviewers gave this game a close 10/10.

I personally love the first two games and origins was meh but I was anticipated for arkhum knight but I was dought full and gladly I was but my friend Chad preorder the co lector edition for $120 and I asked him why and he said cause he's a massive fan and I am to but it's not worth it and he said he spent nearly $300 on the entire series.
GTA games are about stealing cars and running over hookers with said cars.
Red Dead Redemption is about riding horses through the Wild West. (If your horse dies, just keep whistling till a new horse appears out of thin air.)
Arkham games are about zipping through the air as the psycho billionaire who dresses up in a latex Bat suit.
Skyrim was about getting attacked by villagers for killing a chicken.
*None* of these games require skill, but..it's OK because they're a lot of fun. Mindless fun, sure, but fun is fun. At least with the Arkham games, you're not changing between controller & K+M every few minutes like you do in GTA 5 (PC).
I'm not saying the game is bad, I just didn't enjoy the combat as much as everyone else seemed to. The feel of the game in general was good and I enjoyed the stealth side of the game and the gadgets. It just wasn't as good to me as the combat seemed childish. I personally like timing blocks based on watching the animations of the thing attacking you rather than a glowing beacon above the enemy. it is stupid and childish to me and I don't like it.
I could probably pick up the game again, play through the story and enjoy it but the only point I made was about the combat which sucked Imo.

Paradox Acres Yeah you're right. I mean, I could see mack hating TLOU because melee is just spam square until it hits an animation and it's more about the story and setting. The controls would be worse than witcher to him as it's slow and based on real life as in how your character moves and the speed etc.
I will admit my opinion is based on 1 play session at a friends house and I wasn't in the mood. could be that but I haven't played enough of the games to know enemy types later in games, tactics and all that other stuff. I'll see if I can pick it up for the ps3 or 360 and play it again some time as lots of people seem to like the story and I can overlook combat if the story and other things are good
I bought it yesterday and played it for hours. I finally beat the campaign and it is amazing. It couldn't be better. I fully put my vote to buying it.

Sorry but you're dead wrong about the combat. Yeah when the game starts you could just mash X and win, but it's not encouraged since you'll get a super small amount of XP, but around the midpoint of the game, go into a battle with a couple brutes, guys with shields or stun sticks, guys with electrified suits, or guys with guns, and see how long you last just by spamming the punch button.

Nice review! I completely agree that combat can be a bit spamtastic (especially with just a group of melee enemies), but with the more elaborate armed opponent encounters, spamming X usually doesn't work all that well. I found that stealth takedowns were extremely satisfying, especially if you clear an entire room undetected. Also for the ramp you could just scoot it back to where it touches the ledge your car is on so it's not dangling in the middle of the gap XD I'm sure you figured it out eventually though

Anyway,it's not that bad of a game. The Hard difficulty makes the game more challenging. The Batmobile sucks ass, though. Like, it looks cool, but I don't like driving in it. The missions related to using the Batmobile also suck. Because they're the same thing over and over. The combat is enjoyable and simplistic. There's nothing wrong with simple gameplay. You want something with more strategy, then I recommend a game like Fire Emblem or Tactics Ogre: LUCT. I like Arkham City much more.

I usually agree with Mack, but it's up to the player to how in depth you go with the combat there's lots of stuff to use in fights.
I'm not the biggest fan of the Arkham combat but it isn't THAT terrible. Sure you can spam the attack and counter buttons on a small group of enemies but if it's a large group and especially when there is multiple enemy types you are going to have to use different tactics.

Mack, the 770 is no longer state of the art, man. I here you mention this in a lot of videos, though I can't mention them of the top of my head.
I have a 980 and (even though the car was released almost 1 year ago), I also have to tune down settings! Be realistic and understand that technology is never going to be state of the art for longer than 5 seconds after release.
Ameer Mahmood I don't mention it to brag, I mention it so that people thinking about buying the game can see the performance on my PC. If they don't know my GPU and CPU how can they judge the performance. My rig is pretty mid range spec so it's perfect for gaming as most people have similar.

Abraham Lopez I like games where I feel like I am doing all the work, not stuff like this where you are along for the ride. FC3 is a great example, I loved it because I could do WTF I wanted, how I wanted, when I wanted and the game never held my hand or auto aimed for me or faced enemies for me. I love strategy games, space game FPS games, anything that requires some skill and immersion.

Some games, when ported to the PC, are ported with higher res textures, meshes and so on and hence tax a PC more than they tax their console counterpart. I haven't played this game, so I can't say if that's the case with this game or if this game has actually got horrible optimisation and is rendering objects the player can't see lol. Either case, I don't think I actually should have commented on this issue.

I really like how you kinda reviewd both sides of the game. The combat is not much fun but it intended to be an interactive story. I personally only like an interactive story if the combat is at least a little more than pressing 2 buttons, but there are people that do like that. Your reviews just keep getting better and better ;)
I do like the Rocksteady Batman games, for the very reason you point out Mack, being an interactive movie. The combat has never been great, but being able to roleplay as Batman is big for me. I do agree with you 100% by the way. My main issue with this game is the way the PC version has been treated. Bad optimization (or lack of), 30 fps lock, and various crashes. And asking so much freaking money for the season pass. How was this game even allowed to be released? Oh hang on, wanting to make huge amounts of cash at our expense.

It seems as though not only do the developers not care about the quality of the port to pc (re: the 30 fps lock), they don't even do the porting themselves. This is what one developer had to say.
"This is something that Rocksteady takes very seriously. We are working closely with our external PC development partner to make sure these issues get resolved as quickly as possible."
The fact that there is an "external PC development partner" makes me wonder how seriously any AAA developers take PC gaming. I'm envisioning a meeting in some board room in which some corporate types decide they are only going to target sales from consoles. So for the pc, they outsource the porting of the game to whomever will do it the cheapest, collect whatever side money they can from it and decide that's a good enough bonus.
Bottom line is I wouldn't look for a AAA developer to make a quality console port in the future if the PC gaming community continues getting marginalized like this.

I always saw this series as interactive movies because of the "spam x" tendency.
You can't spam X all the time and win the fight. If you played more of the game you would see that. There are shield guys you can't hit, there are stun stick guys you can't hit, there are brutes you can't hit. Come on Mack, a little patience, you make it sound like one can spam X and win every fight, you can't.
I know and I've never finished the 7th challenge of Riddler in Batman Arkham, it took me an hour and a half to give up on that shit after a thousand times of trying

I normally like and agree with most of your reviews, but I like this game. Game needs a patch for sure, but it's an Arkham game. It's going to play similar to the other Arkham games. I still love you Mack, it's ok if we disagree from time to time. :)

Combat in Asylum and City were pretty good so if its anything like them it's probably fine. I mean, on the hardest difficulty it was fun and challenging in many parts as to get higher scores you have to use multiple gadgets and keep the chain of attacks going without pause. On hardest difficulty they do so much damage, even regular grunts, and it gets tricky with people who have shields, armor, different weak points, guns, and thrown weapons all being put in the mix at the same time. If the combat is made easier then I'll definately be disapointed, but if it's the same then it's hard for me to quite understand how this is really just a tap-1-button-to-win-game. The counters can't just be ignored and the timing needs to be spot on to survive in hardest difficulty in the first 2 games.

Sydney Clarysse I lowered it about 1 more inch and it worked like a dream, can't believe you thought that it would not work, it's so obvious that you can drive off the ledge, hit the ramp and clear the jump, worked like a charm second time.

You won't win the combat in these games by mashing the x button. Not every mob can be hit that way, for starters.
You also ignored the most important aspect of combat which is to chain hits in an unbroken combo which means using the counter button as well as knowing what attack to use.
To argue that batman's system is simple is to misunderstand it completely. Not liking it is entirely fine, that's your prerogative and i agree the Batmobile stuff looks like bollocks, but if it's at all like the other games (not Origins which was shit) then it does require skill and an understanding of how each mob works. Some fire guns, some can't be punched, etc.
Also he's Batman, he's supposed to be able to deal with attackers while his back is turned. Why that would be a problem I/m not sure. if you don't like the flashing icons that appear above the heads of mobs (used to time counters, representing batman's skill at combat) then turn them off.
G. Whistler How about 7:57 when Batman picks up the box and throws it at a guy even though I did not want it to happen, then a few seconds later Batman rushes a guy who is not even visible on my screen, the game does it all for you, total bullshit for children imo
Are you saying that Batman, the character you control, just picks up stuff and throws it without your input?
Either that's a weird bug on the pc version, or you mashing buttons so much meant you picked it up without thinking.
You're the player, the character isn't going to do anything without you pressing the button.
Or perhaps the Joker lives inside your computer and is secretly controlling him. I don't know. What i do know is that you really don't get how the combat system works. The inputs are meant to be simple, what's wrong with that? You want a different button for every limb and gadget or something? You have yet to progress beyond 4 hours so you probably haven't unlocked all the gadgets and upgrades that he can use.
G. Whistler What am saying is that "Attack" button is just a fast track way to a whole load of attacks that you don't even control, such as a punch, kick, pick up a box, throw box etc Gaming for children. If this were a proper game punch, kick, pick up object, throw object would all be different buttons and none of them would work unless you were in the correct position to execute the move, for example within punching distance while facing a bad guy.
You can't defend this watered down combat, it's like this by design to allow kids to play the game and look cool.
Best review you've done so far, you put my thoughts into words about how I feel of these games. This genre of game should be renamed into "interactive AAA movie".

I think you're wrong about the combat. It become progressively more complex when different enemies are introduced. As well as this you neglected to mention the predator gameplay, one of the best aspects of the game

I respect your opinions and all, but you did get some really big facts wrong:
Spoiler warning about the enemy classes that you'll meet later in the game by the way.
About the combat and spamming "X" to win every fight: that does not work at all when fighting groups with other enemies than the normal unarmed ones while playing on hard mode. I'm not sure if it even works when I'm actually only fighting those enemies, I haven't tried. To me, the combat was far from a spamfest. Really, nothing of what you said about the combat was true to me, except that I didn't have to face the enemies to counter them. But that's just good game design/common sense (in my opinion), since countering more than one enemy at the same time would have been insanely difficult in huge fights with like 20 enemies, and there are in fact harder enemies with knives that you have to push your left stick away from to dodge.
And again: "Spamfest"? What? As I said, the game was to me not a spamfest at all. There was A LOT of different enemies are defeated in multiple ways, including electrified guys that I had to flee from and I think use the batclaw to somehow take away their electricity (not to sure about that one), other guys with electrified staffs or something that I had to shoot with an electrified charge to neutralize their weapons, huge guys I had to stun too damage, people with shields I had to stun and jump on, medics that could revive fallen enemies and many more. I guess it was unnecessary to give these many examples, but whatever.
And all these examples were just the things that was necessary to even beat the enemies. There was also moves that could make the combat easier, or I must admit - most of the time just cooler. Like pressing "B" three times to launch them in the air and then kick them away. That didn't even KO them, it just looked cool.
And at 8:46... How much of this game did you play!? And at what difficulty? According to 2:08 you consider yourself a player that likes experiences that requires skill. That must mean you played it on the highest possible difficulty, right? Since if you didn't to begin it, you must have set it to that after you found it to easy. Then, if you played on the highest difficulty, just to be clear, you even found that to easy? 'Cause that's pretty MLG-hardcore-sponsoredbydoritos-whatever-pro.
And about this part: 11:26. I don't know, but I felt like pretty much every one that was close enough to me attacked me, and there was definitely never just one guy attacking, if there wasn't - well - just one guy left.
This is a very small thing, but you said that you saw a lot of half-naked women? Either you've really got an eye for that stuff or I'm blind to it, because the only one I saw was Poison Ivy. Not really anything that matters too much, or at least shouldn't to non-perverted gamers.
Okay, these things above were mostly facts. Here's some opinions I don't agree with and other stuff:
You complained about the game being to easy, but I see you getting hit by charging guys and miss counters even when the game is in slow motion (7:47 until 8:25).
I know it's often stupid and irrelevant to complain about a critics skill at a game, but I find it very ironic that you - at least seem to - not be very good at it yourself when you call the combat system "catered for 3-year olds". You may have had a reason for these things, but I just felt like it was worth mentioning.
And how the fuck can you call this an "interactive movie"... Just... What the fuck?
It's like 95% pure gameplay, and 5% cutscenes. That's just a guess btw, don't quote me on that. Anyway, if this is an interactive movie, pretty much every game ever even close to being partly cinematic and relying on story that moves forward due to cutscenes and dialog must be considered an "interactive movie". The CoD-franchise (singleplayer), the Battlefield-franchise (singleplayer), the Gears of War-trilogy (and Judgement, I guess), the Witcher-trilogy , Wolfenstein: The New Order, and many many more. Can you please explain that part? I really, really don't get what you mean.
About these so-called "mini games" you complained about, I personally thought they added some variety and kind of enjoyed them. I don't really see the problem with them anyway.
And about "everybody could play it". Again, what difficulty did you actually play on? Because to me it was fairly hard on the "Hard" difficulty, and it does also have a New Game + mode which should make it even harder. I'd also like to know how far you got. Did you play through the whole game, or at least half of it?
SOME PRETTY SLIGHT SPOILERS ABOUT GAMPLAY-RELATED STUFF IN THE END AHEAD:
The last fight with the Batmobile was pretty hard, and the enemies I fought on the roof was also fairly difficult, when like every class was present. And I don't really consider myself bad at these kind of games. To me, this game was harder than Batman: Arkham City. The stealth sections did also require quite a bit of skill.
SPOILERS ENDED
I just want to mention that I'm not focusing on defending this game. I'm just correcting you and asking things. And well, I guess I'm partly defending it because I think you're very, very unfair to it, but I did not like it that much personally. I bought it to PC, and the city was impossible to drive/glide around in due to the framerate that sometimes dropped down to like 5FPS and the stuttering. I have a R9 290 and should really be able to run it. But I think the gameplay was pretty decent and I kinda enjoyed the story, but the game didn't work properly.
I'm also not to sure if it's right to call this a review. It's more like a first look or something, considering your playtime. I guess there's no real definition of either, but to me this feels like first look.
About your performance issues - I guess you already know this but just in case - the game's recommended GPU is, according to the Steam page a "Nvidia Geforce GTX 760, 3gb Recommended". 3gb sounds completely unreasonable, especially since this game's textures aren't even that good. Seems really poorly optimized. According to your "About"-page on TH-cam you have a GTX 770 with 2gb VRAM, so I guess the VRAM is the problem. The fact that you can't run this game any higher than on the lower settings on 30FPS is just ridiculous. I hope it will get fixed and better optimization in the upcoming patches.
Also, another interesting thing is how different your audience is to Gamespot's. When someone there gave it a 7/10 because the Batmobile was used to much, many people kinda threated to kill him/rape his mom/whatever there. Here, when you completely crush it on many invalid arguments and false accusations, you're audience is fine with it. I guess that's a good thing compared to Gamespot's.

I'm a long time subscriber of your channel and love your style of review and find myself agreeing with the majority of them. I feel that for this game however you missed the mark. I'll start of by saying that I played this game on PS4 and therefore I can't relate to all the optimization issues you had on PC. I can talk about my experience with gameplay, story and soundtrack. (Graphics are fine to me, unreal engine made this game look great in my opinion and it runs pretty smoothly on my PS4, I only encountered 1 bug). Overall I'd say I've put 14-16 hours of gameplay in.
With regards to the gameplay I would disagree entirely with you on the "press x and press y and have a wank with the other hand". In the first few missions it's true that you can easily fight an enemy like this, (albeit it's not a fun way to play) but quickly the game introduces many different enemy subtypes, brutes, shock stick enemies, medics, gunners, blade wielders, electrified grunts and shield wielders. It's not possible to just "press X and press Y" anymore. You legitimately have to aim your attacks, use your surroundings (environmental take downs) plan your combos, and use your gadgets properly during a fight. Hell before a fight it's highly rewarding to plan what you're going to do ahead of time (such as using a disruptor gun to jam gunners). I played the entire game on normal difficulty and I straight up died when I ran in to fight crowds of enemies by just mashing the X button. (there were times I wanted to because i wanted to rush!) So in that regard I think arkham knight has a very satisfying combat system.
Other gameplay elements: too much batmobile IMO, combat got sickening for me I feel like it was forced. Loved the little puzzles and detective mode aspects of the game. Felt very batmanesque also.
Stealth in this game is incredibly fun, sneaking around dispatching enemies one by one, all to a fucking awesome soundtrack (it dynamically changes as you're playing, becomes more intense as the enemies get more scared). Their AI is so interesting, with regular role-call and one guy said "where are you?" and the other guy said "I'm on the second floor, next tot he elevator, we have a man down". It's little things like that you know? The stealth is really enjoyable it's like a puzzle and an action scene all in one, it's really my favourite part of the game, combined with the score during this section.
The story is very satisfying and the voice-acting is so good. It's very nostalgic for me. It's definitely worth a buy on the PS4 in my opinion.
I've written way too much as a youtube comment but this is all just my opinion and I won't disagree on the entire review but honestly I feel you were very biased about certain elements of the game after the game wouldn't run properly on your PC, which I can understand and totally see how it's a waste of money in that regard and not worth a buy but for everything else it offers I think it's definitely worth checking out.

Mad Max was fucking repetitive and the combat was weak. Batman Arkham Knight is 1000000 times better than Mad Max. I have both of them, and at first try, I tough that Mad Max was going to be epic, but is not.

I concur aswell, Asylum was ok i guess but City was just boring since it was more of the same, combat wise.

SeriouslyMikey I love the combat it gets challenging when new enemy types are introduced. At least in the previous ones (haven't played this one). But Mack is entitled to his opinion. I don't agree this time though. The business practices on games nowadays bug me as much as he does. And the general consensus is that it is poorly optimized as well. Pardon my bad English.
SeriouslyMikey Macks example was quiet shitty. 6 of the easiest enemies without weapons are obviously no challenge. But in the past games the game introduced varied enemy types which can hold different weapons and then you actually had to aim where you want to strike, otherwise the guy with the MG in the back will kill you or you'll keep getting hit with a shockstick.
***** I completed the entire first game and I didn't like it because of the combat. I found it boring and very repetitive. Irrelevant of whether I was bad or not, in my opinion, I don't think it's good and shouldn't be praised. I don't see why it's so hard to grasp that it's my personal thoughts.

I wish developers see your videos. You tell what a lot of us think. I'm tired of games that say that you're going to need a new PC to handle it and then it comes lock at 30FPS (WTF). Then you start playing and get bored after three hours. Anyway I been having the same feeling with all the batman titles. I thought this was going to be different. Keep it up Mac!

You do realize that this is the fourth game in the Arkham series, right?
While I haven't played this game, I find the combat in the series to be very good, and don't agree with your assessment of it at all. It completely destroys The Witcher's combat. You can only spam the attack button for so long, before the game forces you to use another button to counter or contend with a certain enemy's attacks. It's true that the movement is automated, but I still don't think it's as basic as basic as you make out. You must hate God of War's combat. That's a game where you can endlessly spam the attack button, regardless of how many combos the game gives you. Most games don't handle melee combat well, but I'd sa the Arkham games feature some of the best.
Never review a game before playing the whole thing! This video should have been called "first impressions" instead

I'm usually not one to go for exclamatory remarks, but your review is absolute shit. You're clearly bullshitting about the combat as there is literally no way you can get by by only using two buttons, since the game gradually adds more types of enemies that force you to use different techniques and forces you to multi-task. You can bumble your way through easily, which is what you did from the gameplay you showed, but the point is to go through the combat with as high of a streak and as little damage taken as possible. Its easy to learn, hard to master.
As far as the game being a "playable movie", yeah, you're just flat out wrong there too. This game tells you exactly what you need to with no fluff. The most extensive cutscenes are mostly used to bookend certain segments, the way they should be used, otherwise it's a huge amount of gameplay.
