What's sad about the jjk side of it, leaks are glorified in the community (twitter). I had to quit the bird app to avoid spoilers but still get recommended screenshots even on youtube 💀

The JJK spoiling is so insane that a term related to Fate, a completely different IP, recently trended on Twitter that contained instant spoilers for the latest JJK chapter. I couldn't avoid getting spoiled even though I was *actively* trying to. Same with Boruto, and I'm sure it happens with a bunch of other series I don't even read. I find it so maddening that people legit would rather get CRUMBS of story as early as possible instead of experiencing them within the story as intended, and on top of that give *zero* fucks about spoiling other people who don't want to be. They say "don't read the spoilers" and legitimately don't acknowledge that they're actively making it so that I absolutely cannot.

    • @hido...
      @hido... 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

I think the spoiling was pretty bad but it was a pretty interesting experience as long as you weren’t the one being spoiled. Only in JJK you can be spoiled while being caught up to the manga. Even the anime has spoilers and edits not even 30 min after the episode released.

One of the "defenses" of spoiling stuff I hate seeing, is when people say to block words, or get off the Internet. Like a) sometimes it's hard to know every spoiler termonology, like some people will block letters or use different terms to avoid the censors etc. and b) did a global pandemic not teach you everything? This isn't 2001 where people aren't online 24/7. People have jobs, or school, or just want to relax and use the Internet. Like man people just suck.

Not defending people who spoil stuff because yeah. But in terms of people who like being spoiled I don't think it's anything bad. Liking being fed bread crumbs and details on events in the story before actually getting into it is just another way of experiencing the story and just because it may not be the intended way doesn't mean it's a bad way. It's not like they're hurting anyone else that way.

I am subscribed to the Shonen Jump App and one thing that always bothers me is that leaked chapters are usually online 3-4 days before they show up in the app. soo Social media, including youtube is packed with video reactions, spoilers, etc that mess up the whole experience.

Just a correction, the chapters on the Shonen Jump App or MangaPLUS are getting released simultaneously , that is midnight japan time, one the same day as the physical release in stores. We aren't receiving the chapters a few days later than japan, as said in the tweet in the video, leaks are photos or scans made by bookstore employees before the official release. It's those who partake in leak culture that are ruining it for all of us.

We essentially had access to the movies/games for the weekend before the general public. We did sign contracts everytime but still we were first. I just want to say, a big reason atleast for me and many others for reading the Fan Translations and Scans of Manga, is the sole reason that Shueishas official scans are of much lower quality, and the English translations, ESPECIALLY for JJK, are REALLY bad. Fan translations are so much better. You would think that someone who's getting paid to translate would do a good job, but sometimes the translations are so off, the whole story gets misunderstood, JJK being a phenomenal example of this.

Japan seems more concerned about leaks which some people think mean fan translation which while very similar wasn't the point of the article. They are concerned that Japanese people will not buy the magazine which actually costs them money. Books being sold early is actually extremely common worldwide. I personally bought the chainsaw man volume 11 English volume a week before its release. Theoretically anyone could read shonen jump early if they hunted around bookstores enough. Only issue here is the fact that the leakers are pirating the books by photographing and uploading them.

  • @Bradmagus

Buy the paperback copies sure, but how much money do you think really goes to the authors when you pay the app subscription or buy the shonen jump magazine. Yes leaking hurts the authors too but it’s the corporations coming after the leakers for the corporations money, not the authors.

Yeah, I think better accessibility and releasing manga digitally in all countries and languages simultaneously would really help with the leaking issue. Sticking to the print format requires there to be publishers and book shops to stock shelves-creating an opportunity for there to be a man in the middle to leak chapters early.
(Currently, they print copies and send it to be distributed, then all shops and digital versions are released to the public at the same time, so the digital versions are essentially just waiting for the paper copies to be distributed.)
I think Japan is too attached to physical media to ever make that transition, but if they did, it would really help, since having 1 department of translators (Japanese to whatever other language) is easier to keep track of than translators, publishers, shore workers, shipping workers, etc.

the thing is the other WSJ series are just totally fine. No one is leaking the latest chapters of Blue Box or MamaYuyu because, well, theres no demand for it. Only like 4 or 5 WSJ titles out of 20 get consistent leaks now-- one piece, jjk, mha, now even sakamoto days and sometimes kagurabachi. i wouldve honestly agree that this is a service issue if we did not get the chapters for free but we do get it for free. i think the community issue is just bigger than it is a service one. Action/Battle shonen fans are just too impatient nowadays, leakers are glorified and are clout chasing, and scanlators are incentivized to post chapters as fast as possible because they earn money through ad revenue on their site.

I think a lot of the times the stores selling the books early doesn't do it out of malice, but out of lack of knowledge of the release date. At least that's the impression I've had when similar situations happen with games. Don't really buy physical copies of games that much these days, but when I was younger I often went around to stores before the game was released and it wasn't impossible to get your hand on the game before it was released.
Even if they hadn't put the game on display, if it was a larger department store, just grabbing an employee and asking them about the game, they'd often notice that they had the game in storage and if you were lucky, the employee you grabbed didn't know about the release date so they'd go and get you a copy of the game.
These days, even if I did buy a physical copy of a game rather than just stick to digital, I wouldn't really dare play it early with all the online registrations going on, so not really worth running around trying to get the games before they're released anymore😀

i fully stand behind the notion that piracy(not leaking) is a failure of supply/distribution rather than "crime is rampant".
most people would just naturally go for the cheapest and most convenient option out there. if a piracy site give me a chapter for free and 3 days before the official release that cost money, well guess which one people are going to check and then obviously not bother to also check the other a few days later. so the official is being beaten on both fronts, not just one. so what chance does it have to be the natural go-to for fans?

Here's an idea, don't be so impatient that you can't wait a couple days for the official release, and don't even check the pirate sites.

So let me dumb down the process of how they got manga magazines since Japan is known for their physical copy in manga pretty much all stores purchased and stored before they were released then the seller can sell the manga for a up charge if the consumer demands a early access for the product just like gaming.
Example- let say a manga worth $10 dollars on released but if you want to buy said manga early access the store can use this method by charging the manga let say $40 dollars before it released to the public in which the stores make more profit using said demands basically insider trading.

this is almost all true except the markup price. its substantially higher than that its essentially a bribe. there are only a handful of copies which are being "sold" to leakers, otherwise they will get caught pretty easily, so they dont really profit off of markup prices. instead they are just given essentially a bribe. the scanlation groups will pay the raws provider, then the raws provider will pay someone that works at the store.

I think the appeal of leaks is that it sucks letting companies drip feed us content at their own pace. The leak contains info they didn't want us to see, and therefore it feels more genuine. I'm a comic artist in the US. I think the increase in accessibility of media in general is a double edged sword. On the one hand, I love that more people around the world are able to access movies, comics, music, what have you from another country that they never would have been able to 15 years ago. On the other, I think it's created a sort of sense of entitlement. Like when you can easily binge an entire season of a show in one weekend, you're immediately left there going "Okay, well now I want more, and I want it immediately." Without taking into account the hours of labor making that thing took. So people go searching for more, and sometimes it leads them to pressuring creators into releasing things faster or looking for leaks. Media already seems to be coming out at the speed of light, often in an unsustainable way (looking at the anime industry), but for a lot of folks it's just never going to be enough. Which sucks.

I’m so glad this is being talked about and honestly I hope leaks stop being as prevalent as they are. I hate leaks and I hate the mindset that’s formed around twitter and especially TikTok. I’ve seen more people upset they won’t have daily leaks than people who are against leaks and it’s just so upsetting. I do agree with the fact that like yes not everyone can afford all these streaming services especially young people and that for English speakers we get chapters quite a few days later so we still have a chance to be spoiled. I know how it was back when anime was not as mainstream as it is today and it was nearly impossible to find shows officially in English. However I view anime and manga as art because it quite literally is art and I want to support my favorite artists so that way they can continue to create these shows and manga that I enjoy so much. I also think by avoiding for paying for these services the correct way, it feeds into the starving artist and negative connotations in the artistic world. We already are having issues where people don’t want to hire artists or pay them what they deserve and have resorted to AI stealing art. It’s so disheartening to see. Artists deserve to have their works recognized and be compensated fairly for them as well. Please don’t support leaks and think of the people who don’t want to be bombarded with leaks and spoilers every time they open twitter. I’ve had so much of jjk ruined for me because of the leaks. I know a lot of people don’t agree and don’t see the problem with leaks and I agree there are still things that these companies could do to make their series more accessible to overseas audiences but leaking shit on twitter is not the way to go about it.

unfortunately thats not the case really for the top mangas anymore
i am with joey on the part that i dont really care about spoilers since it doesnt affect most of the things i read anyways but its just so annoying
ever since people figured out they can earn cash from scanlations through ad revenues on their sites speed scanning have always been a thing. they are incentivized to get early raws of chapters and scanlate it as fast as possible so that they can get more clicks.
it is both a community problem and a service problem in my eyes, because people just want to get things early, even though they can already get it (FOR FREE btw) if they just waited just a couple more days. I can symphatize a bit with JJK because their official translations are subpar (they dont read and flow as neatly for some reason) but One Piece fans? Stephen Paul has done an amazing job on it and has been a pillar of the One Piece community waaaaaaay back before he became an official translator, yet they still want it much earlier, so its definitely not just a service problem.

Leaks will ALWAYS be bad because there is always a group of persons who will get out of the way to spoil it without consent.
One Piece has a huge spoiler scene and i think it has the best example of how leaks can be great. Every week i read them and they are always controlled in a certain way (sometimes there is chapter pages leaks but that may be from other sources).
It comes in 2 waves and always in text, first wave tells the major events of the chapter, the second wave goes on detail on whats really happening. But what i think is really cool, is that the leakers don't spoil to much, they refuse to spoiler some major appearances and surprises until the second wave. Top of the cake is how One Piece reddit tries to control spoilers outside of the main spoiler thread, i never found a chapter spoiler outside of the thread (i dont scroll much but yea and i don't go to twitter).
Spoilers are subjetive but i do love one piece spoilers. In my mind it looks like i have 3 chapters per week cause of the 1st and 2nd wave and then the release.

Who cares. If I get to read a manga early then I like to read it early. Leeks don't bother me. One piece is leaked every week for YEARS

They'll never stop leakers 'cause there's a certain crowd that craves them. The Kingdom subreddit for example is obsessed with early leaks.

I don't really mind the leaks cuz john werry manages to fuck up every single chapter man. Like his translations are so off and dialogues start meshing into borderline booger talk. This is why there are leakers for jjk. The other series are understandable because its usually just ppl needing to know the chap content faster. But when it comes to jjk its an exception cuz john werry makes us lose braincells. " Authentic mutual love " ahh 😭

I like how Joey looks like one of the old german dudes living in Berlin or Hamburg with the sweater and the hat in this video. :D

Honestly, the problem with leak is "too early access" where official is not even out yet. You basically won't have problem if the official is out.
Even illegal manhwa reader like me and many scanlators out there at least wait until the official release.

Wait these people run quite a large online store selling Japanese products (at least I think so because that company has the same name). They sell anime figures, manga and clothes from Japan to people in the West. Knowing their size I can't imagine these people don't have contacts and build up relations with people at stores in Tokyo, so I can see how they would get access before release date.
But man you have to be a really special kind of stupid to leak unreleased manga images when you run a big online store selling figures and manga! How do such people even run a company to begin with? 😂

i hate the current leak culture, because this specific case with jjk happened to me, several key moments got spoiled to me against my will and without any way to avoid every time I opened twitter. its one thing where some niche comment board online leaks something and that ripples through as rumours, but if the actual chapter leaks a whole week or two ahead of schedule, and that ruins the hype in that series for EVERYONE, even people who wanted to wait, just is bad period. There's definitely a part about piracy and accessibility, and I dont have anything against that, (i may or maynot occasionally raise the jolly roger myself) but i think its just bad business to outpace the actual serialization, especially with incomplete or partial leaks on purpose. by getting ahead of the official sources.
I for one welcome the punishment, it doesnt matter their circumstance, its blatantly obvious that their actions were illegal and super douchey anyway. If they get off light i hope they at least learn their lesson and never leak shit again.
now if japan could figure out how to destroy the scalping economy and tenbaiya- culture next, I'd be even happier! actually, not just japan, lets as a species eliminate the parasitic behaviors of scalping and price gouging!

In this case, the spoilers are easily avoidable, just don't open twitter lmao. If you get spoiled every time you open it why do you keep going back for more 😂
