You know, the _"it's old, I'm not gonna give it a chance, it's probably bad/worse than the new stuff"._ However the opposite happens constantly and you you see that every other day with "modern gaming is bad" videos. Not everyone is like that, but they definitely exist. But it is important to realize that not all old things are good. Likewise not all new things are bad. Far from it. Good and bad things always exist, then and now; sometimes one more than the other I suppose. Maybe someone does think that modern things are worse. Fair enough, I guess, we all like different things. In regards to video games, I think that there are tons of new amazing games. Maybe they don't agree, but that doesn't matter, because I like what I like and so do they. @Joey Bizinger 16:00 WHAT I'M SAYING! Thank you ! I've been saying for awhile now, that we need more sci-fi/cyberpunk Anime and Manga today. We haven't gotten a dark gritty sci-fi Anime in a long long time. One of my favorites genre's in the medium honestly. 😭
I fell asleep when I watched Akira about 10 years ago. I thought maybe I just wasn't mature enough to understand back then or whatever, so I went to the cinema when it was re-released recently. I dozed off at around the same point as before lmao As much as I appreciate Akira's visuals and the atmosphere of the first half, I don't think GITS or Edgerunners are even in the same universe
Wow that's a hot take! For me personally I saw Akira when I was about 16 years old and I was mostly bored out of my mind and didn't see what the hype was about, then I watched not too long ago I'm 26 now, and I loved it, I could understand and follow the plot much more I don't think it's because I'm just wiser now but also because I'm more open minded then I ever was as a dumbass kid so I started watching Ghost in The Shell Standalone Complex and wow it feels great to go back to these things and experience them as an adult
@@lazkraft7917 Yeah the second time I watched it I was definitely able to follow the plot better than the first time. I just didn't find it very interesting haha It reminded me of 20th Century boys and Monster. Stories with a strong hook at the start, muddy+unfocused second half that feels dragged out and a convoluted ending that's unsatisfying/doesn't feel right.
Wow, I thought I was basically alone in this regard. I've heard a handful of people say it's "overrated" or typical hater stuff, but that's not quite how I felt. I tried to watch it several times, but half way through I'm either falling asleep or trying my best to stay awake. It's not hard to follow, I just get so bored for some reason.
There's a low-budget sci-fi thriller from 2013 called 'Coherence' that would be amazing as an anime film, or series of OVAs. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend.
A director *was* actually attached to the Akira live-action, that being Taika Waititi, he wanted to make an adaptation that was closer to the original manga. The reason that it apparently fell apart was because he wanted to cast a Japanese actor in the lead role whereas the studio wanted to cast a big name like Leonardo DiCaprio and they butted heads on that.
I never take people seriously when they start debating with the nostalgia argument. Basically you’re saying you’re mad that people aren’t dick riding what is popular right now, and your favorite show or media is out of date after it hit the 15 to 20 year mark and it has no value whatsoever today.. I’m the kind of person that believes if the creator knew what he was doing during that time, his work can hold up for many decades. 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
So here is the thing. Older content is a spectrum just like newer content is a spectrum. And yes there are some really good older stuff and bad older stuff. But it is also true that nostalgia and familiarity affect our appreciation of the content. This is a well-studied phenomenon and denying it is delusional.
Well said. There's no reason to deny that you like something because it's what you're familiar with. It's not a bad thing and doesn't invalidate your feelings. That being said your feelings, whether from nostalgia or personal preference or w/e also don't mean you're right and your preference is above someone else's. NGL I've never had someone tell me "you only like that cz of nostalgia" or make it into a bad thing, it makes me think the person is a "back in my day things were better" type and complains that people disagree. I'm not saying it can't happen, but if you're minding your own business enjoying the things you like there won't be zoomers spawning next to you telling you you're only enjoying it cz of nostalgia.
20:22 I can’t stand shonen fans. Who literally get surprised when there’s a new series from their company that similar to something else their stories are never original, and they never will be. Even if something starts out different it will still go into the category of things you’ve already seen before and honestly instead of complaining that every creator is ripping off each other. Have you ever thought about the fact that shonen jump as a company does not care about it being original or not? They care about what sells. When I found out that Kishimoto was told to make a rival character for Naruto. The Dragon Ball fans said he was ripping off Toriyama. Sasuke was not even part of his original vision for the story. It worked out well, but imagine being called out by a fanbase for a character you never intended to be in your story to begin with, but that’s what the company wanted.. 😕
2:50 This is not true. FGO does not explain the whole fate franchise. It's simply a different story. That's like saying Persona 5 is enough to understand Persona 4. But I agree with the comment saying it's not that complicated. It really isn't. Outsiders just see 100 different titles and get scared. The fate anime alone are enough to understand 90% of fate lore. Or even better, read the VN instead of watching the anime. Sidenote, I love how Joey knows everything about the KH timeline despite never playing it. Thank you Aki.
I don't know. I'm not a Oshi no Ko superfan, but I would say that the second half of the first season was as good as the first half. But then I don't think the opening episode was the best first episode of anime. It was kind of just fine.
To that nostalgia person nah it actually is nostalgia. Going back and playing older games is really hard if you didn't play them in the past. Like i know Torment would be one if my favorite games of all time if I grew up with it but every time I've tried playing it it's impossible to get into.
I think the only way to prove it is not nostalgia is if you never experienced the old thing until you are an adult and that thing is already old. Like I am 24, and my favorite musician is Eric Clapton. He inspired me to learn guitar. My mom is probably the worlds oldest Swiftie and never listens to rock music, and my dad was not in my life much as a kid and mostly listens to country music. I have no bias at all towards classic rock music from the 60s and 70s and purely like it for its own merits. Even someone like Joey, assuming he likes Clapton and Hendrix and such too, would have nostalgia for listening to it as a kid with his dad. I didn't get into Clapton until about 5 years ago and got my first guitar in 2020 when I was 20 years old. So I can, without a doubt, say it is not nostalgia.
Hello, Joey! I’m a huge fan of Ari Aster, myself. You probably have watched this, but in 2011 he made a short film called “the strange thing about the Johnsons.” It’s 30 minutes long and available on TH-cam if you haven’t checked it out already. It’s really well written and directed.
I guess I should read Devilman now. Also, I am quite fond of shonen anime and manga because I grew up with action movies and superhero comics. There's a familiarity there. Sure, I do like manga and anime of other demographics and genres, but, Shonen Jump and shonen in general is a comfort based anime and manga for me ❤
Joey talk About ANIME NO WAY!! Ohh it's on 2nd channel make sense (at this point patreon is the only way to make Joey talk about anime even on the main channel). Atleast it's a progress 🎉
As a isekai lover i feel like most animes dont show the true love one gets from the mangas, and many mangas they choose as anime are the middle/low once, there are some really amazing isekai mangas
Alright, since Joey talked about Devilman ending, I'm going to defend Erased's thirds to ending. I think the ending is pretty good. It's literally the title, "Boku dake ga Inai Machi", "The Town Where Only I'm Erased". If you're getting annoyed by the ending and disregarding the whole journey it took because of it, then the author had already accomplished his goal because that's the consequences for changing the past, someone had to take others place.
The fate timeline isnt complicated at all, it makes sense, if you accept that most of the universe ,. yes has good basics and that, but it also kinda is mostly fanfic by th ecreator loosely held together , with a good story at the core and branching out from there. That somehow still is somewhat coherent together. So no fate isnt complicated, you just have to let go its some hard magic everything is logical thing when a lot is like in universe fanfic stuff thats just integrated.. Good fanfic, that still has themes, but still.
15:58 esp in this AI moment we need more cyberpunk anime. To this day I ask younger and newer fans if they had ever seen GITS and I get blank stares. Its kinda shoxking how slept on it is
With Tenjo it Adapted all the material that was available in 2004 and the Manga ended in 2012 which was monthly Air Gear is the same deal where the Manga started in 2004 and the anime came out in 06
I get that kingdom hearts is confusing to some people but saying things are cannon when they are not just confuses people even more. The world ends with you game does not have to be played to understand the characters appearing in kingdom hearts.
The point about nostalgia is that some people romanticize the past when in reality they only remember the good parts. There were plenty of bad games, films, shows, songs etc. in the past. Obviously when you are actively playing and enjoying an old game and someone says it’s ‘just nostalgia’ they’re dumb, but when someone claims a general ‘they’re not making them like they used to’ statements, that’s nostalgia.
The take on oshi no ko I think the issue was the fact that the first episode was that long and with that plot twist, and then there was not drama in the anime tbh, later on in the manga it gets better and better with like 2 plot twists that I really liked I caught up to it when the anime was coming out, don't know about like the last 3 months, but still the manga got better and the anime made a mistake of starting off strong and then slowing down.
25:29 this commen is our hero who literally destroy and expose the german anime community who praise elfen lied as an master piece but its just 12 episode of mindless bloodbath same for brunhildr in the darkness
I just read the plot summary for Aku no Hana on wikipedia. Why is this so depressing? Seems kinda nice. Also extremely crazy. I guess the sad part is the crazy girl ends up alone? Like nobody died. It would have been depressing if they succeeded in lighting themselves on fire but they didnt and everyone is safe and fine at the end.
the original Gundam show from tthe 70s blew me away, it was very revolutionary in storytelling went against the robot shows airing at the time, i recommend it especially the three part movie cutting out filler. japanese dub only though the English dub makes it feel campy.
I think the thing that frustrated me the most about Devilman Crybaby was the reveal that everything that happened in the the anime was basically All According To Keikaku for the demons. That would have been fine if it didn't feel so unbelievably like a stretch. Upon rewatching it, I do agree I was way too harsh on it because it was honestly a super gripping show. But I still do not think it was the best anime of that year. 😁
Somewhere near 17:15 to help the random comment out about fillers in anime he should watch this one specific scene in Gintama that kinda basically explains fillers and if you are still upset even after learning about fillers then that’s a U problem buddy. (This goes for everyone else who has a problem with fillers)
NUJABES is 💋👌any music he took part in or wrote was so good if you haven't already give his music a listen I recommend 'lady Brown' it's such a passionately written/ good song.
Coming with a contradicting opinion to yours about mirai nikki. Yes it's edgy I was 14 and I thought it was deep BUT I rewatched 2 times in the spam of 9 years and its holds to its wicked romance story. It's one of the most realistic ones out there. Spoiler alert: yuno states that she could have loved anyone that came to her perception at the right timing. And that's what I uavent seen in any romance story. The harsh truth of how we fall in love with someone or even not love but satisfy our needs. Being at the right moment with the right person is what it takes to fall in love. It really holds a dear place in my heart and every time I rewatched it I found out something new. Other than that it's an OK show, pretty funny at times and it has great character development that it could be expanded on.
@@shyguy5473 But the story really hammers home how red flag yuno is, its a good dark romance, because how unhealthy it is. the ending should be her letting go. to let healthiret yuno live her life, thou But its a good twisted romance drama. And i have no idea why she is so liked unironic when the anime goes so hard showing how bad she is. Through her trauma is done well to show she is hella traumatized.
@marocat4749 I think she is liked 1st for how badass they made her look from the start with being able to assassin someone and 2nd because if someone would be in yukis situation they would just accept it more and be happy to have a girl around them all the time. It does sound good in theory. If you have any other dark romance anime pls recommend. I can only think of 1 or 2 that give of this vibe, not yandere or killing just dark romance.
Even as an unironic enjoyer of some real edgy stuff now and again, I definitely agree that Elfen Lied was not nearly as deep and quality as it was hyped up to be at the time. I will, however, die on the hill that the opening sequence with Lucy escaping the facility is an absolute masterpiece of sci-fi horror (and was the main reason why I and many others continued watching the rest of the series despite it never reaching that level of quality again). Also the OP/main theme is great.
My first exposure to Aku no Hana was the anime, and damn did that artstyle and rotoscoping dial the atmosphere up hundreds more. I moved on to the manga because I wanted to read the rest that was never adapted, but the manga’s artstyle killed the whole uncanny vibe, it almost turned itself into a sort of black comedy for me.

Go Nagai has always been one of my favorites, but hey I’m old and he’s one of the few manga writers that I like that’s still alive.
I fell asleep when I watched Akira about 10 years ago. I thought maybe I just wasn't mature enough to understand back then or whatever, so I went to the cinema when it was re-released recently. I dozed off at around the same point as before lmao
As much as I appreciate Akira's visuals and the atmosphere of the first half, I don't think GITS or Edgerunners are even in the same universe
I just didn't find it very interesting haha
It reminded me of 20th Century boys and Monster.
It re-released recently?!
There's a low-budget sci-fi thriller from 2013 called 'Coherence' that would be amazing as an anime film, or series of OVAs. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend.
17:45 Also included with Tengo Tenje is Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple Season 2
( although I hear a rumor that they might actually finish it ... )
Dang he seems to know a lot about Manga and anime. He should make an anime channel
Man this series is a dose of nostalgia. Please keep this going.
Joey that last anime you watch was back in 2010 😂
he watched hunter x hunter so was 2011
I never take people seriously when they start debating with the nostalgia argument. 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Amazing video Joey,fantastic job.
How to get people into Type-Moon:
1. Make them watch Fate/Zero and Fate/UBW
2. Let them fell down the rabbit hole by themselves
Keep up the awesome work and videos Joey love the video
Looking great joey ❤❤
More like looking tired. Nonsense must be on that grind currently.
Well I think he looks great
LETS GOOOO NEW LETS FIGHT
Monster and Now and then, Here and There: "Are we a joke to you?"
Glad to see the LETS FIGHT series has been migrated to this channel
Hello, Joey! I’m a huge fan of Ari Aster, myself. You probably have watched this, but in 2011 he made a short film called “the strange thing about the Johnsons.” It’s 30 minutes long and available on TH-cam if you haven’t checked it out already. It’s really well written and directed.
I’m the commenter. Are you saying it’s also anime material?
Joey you should do a nonsense/house of ninjas hoodie collab. That would be sick. Just putting it out there
I FUCKIN' agree, Joey! CY-BER-PUNK! CY-BER-PUNK! More, please??? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I guess I should read Devilman now. Also, I am quite fond of shonen anime and manga because I grew up with action movies and superhero comics. There's a familiarity there. Sure, I do like manga and anime of other demographics and genres, but, Shonen Jump and shonen in general is a comfort based anime and manga for me ❤
Feeling extremely validated after listening to Joey talk about the Aku no Hana anime. Agree 100%
If you're getting annoyed by the ending and disregarding the whole journey it took because of it, then the author had already accomplished his goal because that's the consequences for changing the past, someone had to take others place.
i'm unreasonably happy that someone else knows Sakamichi no Apollon
Love these vids
The fate timeline isnt complicated at all, it makes sense, if you accept that most of the universe ,. yes has good basics and that, but it also kinda is mostly fanfic by th ecreator loosely held together , with a good story at the core and branching out from there. That somehow still is somewhat coherent together.
So no fate isnt complicated, you just have to let go its some hard magic everything is logical thing when a lot is like in universe fanfic stuff thats just integrated.. Good fanfic, that still has themes, but still.
Oshi No Ko season 1 was consistent and episode 6 was easily its best episode
6 is the Akane suicide attempt episode right ... Thats even better in the manga , those comments she gets hurt even the readers reading them .
Let's fight Electric Boogaloo 2. I'm all for another one lets go
the goat is back
The Anime Man is back!
thanks joey for the new watch list
15:58 esp in this AI moment we need more cyberpunk anime. To this day I ask younger and newer fans if they had ever seen GITS and I get blank stares. Its kinda shoxking how slept on it is
Technically GitS is post-human rather than cyberpunk, and to be fair the anime went downhill after SAC 2nd Gig.
@@markwatson8714 I'll give you that the movies post SAC aren't great. I actually somewhat enjoyed SAC 2045 and how topical it was when it was released
20:36 - it doesn't help that many of the shounen titles are the ones that get imported to other countries first.
Junji itos take on Frankenstein was great, it'd be good to have that art applied to classic horror movies
Tenjou Tenge anime did pretty much the same as Air Gear anime. Anime ends right before series actually goes crazy. And both made by same author.
With Tenjo it Adapted all the material that was available in 2004 and the Manga ended in 2012 which was monthly
Air Gear is the same deal where the Manga started in 2004 and the anime came out in 06
I get that kingdom hearts is confusing to some people but saying things are cannon when they are not just confuses people even more. The world ends with you game does not have to be played to understand the characters appearing in kingdom hearts.
Metallic rouge, while not completely Cyberpunk, definitely gives the vibes
yay i was wrong about devilman crybaby, now i can watch it knowing that it was an og and have a better thoughts about it.
Nah dawg! Parasite ost is the god. That dubstep is so good and was so hype. I felt 'locked in' everytime it played.
Toriko man I miss it so much I hope they rerelease it again some day so I can collect the manga
I’m the remake subject commenter. Many franchises of anime and non anime are also due for original stories in their universes also
I just wanna hug
15:50 meanwhile joey wears arasaka sweater from cyberpunk, no way you didnt planned it!
the original Gundam show from tthe 70s blew me away, it was very revolutionary in storytelling went against the robot shows airing at the time, i recommend it especially the three part movie cutting out filler. japanese dub only though the English dub makes it feel campy.
2:33 when you get done. 🛌
Nothing we love is edgy, we are
And the game Hatred
The "romance" in Mirai Nikki only works because of Yuno's personality and Yuki being submissive. It's not a good romance though.
@@shyguy5473 But the story really hammers home how red flag yuno is, its a good dark romance, because how unhealthy it is. the ending should be her letting go. to let healthiret yuno live her life, thou
But its a good twisted romance drama. And i have no idea why she is so liked unironic when the anime goes so hard showing how bad she is. Through her trauma is done well to show she is hella traumatized.
@shyguy5473 it is a dark romance and covers more the obsessive side of it. And yes it is more interesting when you show a girl killing people.
A lot of anime seem to love to tackle some incredibly sensitive subjects, with extreme confidence, while having absolutely no tact whatsoever.
The 2nd half of ONK s1 wasn't up to par with the 1st half, what? That is a wild take from Joey
Joey, who should I listen to now that The Peggies have broken up after stealing my heart?
My only problem is that although samurai champloo ost is good I’d argue the keikai kaisen/ blood blockade battlefront’s ost is way better
Blood blockade battlefront, also good anime, through i love shamploo more
I've said it many times before & I'll say it again.
Just because something can be something. Doesn't mean it is that something.
Hmph, well just because you're correct doesn't mean you're right!
