I was up in Montana awhile back and got to hang with my friend Clay of Expedition Overland at the X Hangar. We had a good time, and though he has a whole fleet of incredible vehicles, I figured you guys would appreciate this humble old 4Runner more than others maybe. So in this video we do a walk around of the XOverland 3rd Gen 4Runner Overland build. Clay built it to overland - for real overland, like cross country, cross border, cross hemisphere travel. Hope you enjoy it.

Awesome looking rig and great daily driver. One of my favorite 90's nostalgia vehicle. Lots of memories in my 99 4Runner that I built up since 2005. Mine is a sleeper and looks stock (lifted 0.25 in to level the rear). Most wouldn't know that its got 2.5" coilovers, heavier springs, drivetrain upgrades (2nd gen supercharger with 2.2 pulley, 7th injector, DT header, xmsn valve body upgrade, xmsn cooler), Tundra brakes, extended sway bar endlinks with disconnects, and underbody armor. I brought it stock with ~60,000 mi and I have put over 150,000 mi on it with the supercharger. I have traveled multiple times from the East Coast to the West Coast with zero breakdowns. It started out carrying just myself after college and expanded to my family of 5 (soon to be 6). It is my daily driver, weekend off-roader, and travel rig (if it is just me). It is highly capable even in stock form (4.30 gear and rear locker) and I often off-road with friends with modified Jeeps, Nissans, Toyotas, and Dodge. Weight is the enemy on these lighter off-road rigs compared to the Land Cruiser platform so I keep my modifications to a minimal. Additionally, I also have a similarly modified GX470 and LX570 for the family overland trips but I prefer to drive this little 4Runner daily because of its simplicity.

Ok, firstly absolutely beautiful rig. I love those 3rd gen 4runners and this is a great example of a well done rig, and while a bit over the top for it's intended use it looks and I'm sure works amazing.
That said, the comment about the synthetic winch rope had me in stitches. "Save the weight where we can", I mean come one, there has to be over 1k payload over factory on that rig, does the 25lb of difference between synthetic and steel winch really matter? The goosegear kitchen setup alone without the stove or fridge weighs 80lbs. There are plenty of reasons to go with a synthetic rope, but by god did that answer get me.
Cool looking rig, hope you guys hang onto it for years to come.

You could go faster! Check out the speed record. But! Most people who set off to travel the full road take many months to years to explore it. That’s the build spec for this. To limit the amount you would need to do hopefully in another country and give you the total confidence to explore. This truck comes in less than a brand new Tacoma at around 30K.

So I put in the 7th injector. I did help a little but still had a little hiccup. I just recently added the K&N cold air intake and now the hiccup is gone. The motor runs smooth.

My other one only has 150,000 miles on her and she runs in the Peach Pass lane of Atlanta at least one a week. Both 4 Runners are like new and sweet rides. The new 2022 retro Land Cruisers LC70s are just like these old third generations in so many ways. Toyota got it right when they made these.

Awesome rig. One better for the snorkel tho. Can't remember the manu but they are out Aussie Land. Much tighter to Qtr panel and much less wind resistance and hence less impact on MPG, super low profile and not sticking up and out like most. A snorkel such as this...easily 1.0 to 2 MPG loss.

That’s a unicorn in Colorado, most of them are clapped out 250-300k mile rust buckets on dry rotted BFG’s and a homemade bull bar that are listed for $12000 in ads ending with “I know what I got”.

Really? I see some pretty clean ones around 200k for $5000-6000 on the reg.

@@Ratchetanium I'm exaggerating a little but people are very proud of their old toyota trucks/suv in this state. Don't get me started on the current market for FJ Cruisers.

Would be nice to see the non "hooked-up" price this would actually cost to build. I imagine It's pretty ridiculous.

This truck is so beautiful. This channel inspired me to build a truck, I just can’t decide between a taco or the 4Runner. 😮‍💨 it would be my first build ever, I’m super excited. I just want something I can travel out of just like this with my dog

this is basically the direction I'm taking my e-locked 5 speed 3rd gen. one thing I cant figure out is where they got the rest of the goose gear sleeper platform from. they only sell the back part not the part that goes over the seats.
